A SENIOR United Party for National Development (UPND) official has said the Patriotic Front (PF) has up to the end of next month to decide whether the pact between the two parties should continue or they pursue separate interests.
UPND policy and research director Cholwe Beyani said in Chipata on Monday that UPND had been persuading the PF to agree on certain issues, among them harmonisation of their manifestos, but that the pact partners had responded negatively.
“We have given them up to the month end of February to decide whether the pact should continue or not,” Dr Beyani said during a meeting with Anti-Voter Apathy Project information officer, Moses Phiri.
He said there were a number of problems in the pact because the two political parties had different opinions, directions and level of education.
He, however, assured the public that the pact would work towards resolving the misunderstandings soon.
And Mr Phiri said Zambians should be told whether the pact was still standing or it had collapsed.
He said that was because people had been asking a lot of questions about the future of the UPND/PF pact.
But when contacted, PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba said Dr Beyani did not know what he was talking about.
He said PF had never received any correspondence from UPND asking them either to continue as a pact or go separate ways.
“He doesn’t know what he is talking about and we have not received any correspondence asking us to decide whether we should continue as a pact or not,” Mr Kabimba said.

People, let us analyse Rupiah, Sata and HH. Who among the three would take Zambia Forward? What has Rupiah in offer for Zambia in terms of his experience, profession, age and social life? Both Rupiah and Sata have served in the First and Second Republics and rigged elections when the frog won. Their age is in the afternoon, quite old for the job, they have divorced several times. Like it or not RB will rule zed to 2016. This is simple to tell because apart from chiluba’s acquittals and the like, he has contnued where LPM left. he is tried and tested. Dr Beyani is not an ordinary UPND member but Director of policy and research! As I’ve mentioned before, my man HH is living in a f-ool’s paradise if he thinks he can sit down and reason with kaponya goons. So the PACT has not only stolen time for HH to have penetrated Lusaka and CB on his own, it has also robbed him of being future President of Zambia. In the event that HH is appointed vice the UPND will not agree they will go for it on their own and the other side of the coin will not be and can never happen SATA cant deputise HH. I feel sorry for PACT supports esp UPND. SATA can win these elections.
My anaylsis
Since 2006 the gap between SATA and Levy was less than 50,000 votes and guess what it was western province that helped levy to win , in the same vain in 2008 RB won because of the votes in western province. Remeber RB said he did not solicite for votes in western province??? with the issues in Mongu i dont see RB getting votes in the west the gap of 20,000 will not b there.
So given the same the people of the west may end up voting Milupi, SATA will get Lusaka, CB, Northern and Luapula….RB Eastern only the rest 2 nd say Lusaka and CB southern goes to HH . Actually for now i can tell SATA to break up with the UPND to allow HH win southern province. This helps SATA coz RB doesnt get the southern vote.
Came end of 2011 shikulu SATA will be in State house dont worry about N/W the miners have migrated from CB so SATA will do better there.
UPND I will give it you, that is a very clever way of saving face to pull out of the Pact by throwing the ball in Sata’s court. Indeed smart, Kabimba has fallen into the trap already. But whatever is said from now on, the bottom line is that the death of the Pact has now been declared and announced.

Dr. Choolwe Beyani claims that “there were a number of problems in the pact because the two political parties had different opinions, directions and LEVEL OF EDUCATION”. Clearly, Dr. Beyani’s cynical insinuation is that the UPND comprises more educated people than the PF. This is not factually correct. An analysis of figures of the current parliamentary representation of the PF (excluding the rebels) and the UPND based on the Parliamentary Handbook reveals that out of the 28 non – rebel PF MPs, 16 (or 57.1%) of them have no university degrees. Out of the 22 UPND MPs, 13 (or 59.1%) of them have no university degrees. The PF has 12 MPs (or 42.9%) with degrees while the UPND has 9 MPs (or 40.9%) with degrees. So what is basis of Dr. Beyani’s claims?
I hope this Dr. has the intelligence of a Doctor.
Has he conducted a census to know the different levels of “education” between the supporters of UPND and PF, respectively?

MMD leaders ve been saying that Wynter Kabimba is Sata’s nephew. Can some one lay the facts bear so that the public know th truth and shame Kunda and other MMD leaders. As for the Pact yes time is running out in fact end of February is too far. If it has broken up or failed then let the pipo concerned own up. Black Politics and PACTs dont work. With the on going situation in Western Province MMD riging ground has been exposed and the PACT was going to have a field day in capuring MMD votes but they are disarray.
