FORMER Patriotic Front (PF) secretary general Edward Mumbi and Committee of Citizens executive director Gregory Chifire have challenged PF leader Michael Sata to produce evidence that he has been remitting tax to the Zambia Revenue Authority(ZRA) from consultancy works he claims to have been providing.

They said in separate interviews in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Sata, who had been claiming that the US$27,000 confiscated in South Africa, was money paid to him after some consultancy work he did was allegedly evading tax and should be prosecuted.

Mr Mumbi said according to the laws of Zambia, those providing consultancy services were supposed to remit tax to ZRA and that Mr Sata should produce evidence that he had been doing so, failure to which he should be prosecuted for evading tax.

He said it was sad that Mr Sata was now trying to intimidate journalists by threatening them with law suits so that they stop exposing his wrong deeds.

“Mr Sata’s new stance of threatening to sue journalists in their own capacity is an act of childish and irresponsible behaviour,” he said.
He said Mr Sata should not rush into challenging him and Mr Phiri to produce the list of Lebanese and Greek nationals he had been borrowing money from.
Mr Mumbi said the PF president should first clear his name on several matters that had already exposed his misdeeds such as the dividing of Northern Province into two, selling of a piece of land in Luapula Province, and the issues surrounding his dealings which are currently before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

But when contacted, Mr Sata said the issue of the $27,000 had been overtaken by events and that he would rather not talk about it.

“How many times am I going to talk about the $27,000? That money has even been overtaken by events and by now it may even have gone to $100,000. What do Mumbi and Chifire know about ZRA?” Mr Sata said.

He also maintained that he would continue suing journalists in their own capacity as the country heads towards the 2011 elections.

“Where have you seen a driver knowing his boss’ debts? Yes, a driver can know about his boss’ girlfriend but not the debts his boss owes the people,” he said.

He also said he would ensure his former bodyguard and driver, Kelvin Phiri was prosecuted for what he called criminal defamation.

And Mr Chifire said Zambians should be wary of people like Mr Sata who would engage in shoddy deals with the aim of paying his creditors in an unlikely event that he was elected president.

He also said Mr Sata’s tendency of leaking confidential correspondence between him and President Rupiah Banda showed that the PF leader had no confidentiality and should not be trusted.

Meanwhile, the labour commissioner is today expected to meet Mr Sata’s former body guard Kelvin Phiri over a report submitted to his office concerning the opposition leader’s failure to pay K12 million terminal benefits.

Labour Commissioner Noah Siansimuna confirmed this in an interview.

  1. this is rubbish, I’m so fed up of this witch hunting on Sata. its always Sata this Sata that! these guys would have wasted too much energy by the time MMD is done using them. funny that they are fathers, family men who will end up bringing shame on their families. no amount of negative talk can influence a mind that is already made up, its change that Zambians want, whether from Sata or HH, its still change.

  2. Tax evasion is criminal and those found wanting are not qualified to aspire for public offices which are rolled by tax payers’s remittances. Sata should consult his compatriots in the bestiality agenda what happens to tax evaders. For evading tax one carries a criminal office disqualifying him from public office. There for Sata is not only a public moral harzard, criminal, fraudster but unethical and untrustworth to be a custodian of tax payers’ money.

  3. Naimwe ba LT now we are fed up of your propaganda. So you think it will change our mind? we will vote for SATA. I can see that you ba LT you are damn scared of the old man. Unfortunately we love him. we will never love your rotten stinking Mad Dogs.

  4. ba mumbi kapolokanu, mulibe nzelu mudala imwe, do you even have children.
even a young boy like me can see that you have no brains….kantole ubunono.

  5. Is it for Sata to prove? why not take a walk to ZRA and check records, otherwise call ZRA and find out if he hasnt been remitting tax.Wesley Snipes is in chooks, because the tax office proved that he never submitted his tax.
    These two are quiet thick

  6. mr Mumbi you are fighting a losing batter, why do you have to embarassy yourself and your family at large like this, no man grow up and find something sensible to do….the people have already made up their minds they are voting Sata.

  7. Sata, It is important you pay your taxes. This is your civic responsibility, which must be guarded judiciously. Tax evasion is unpatriotic, an economic sabotage. This is an age long responsibility recognised by law and enforced by successive governments. In 1789, a United State statesman, Benjamin Franklin observed: “In this world, nothing is certain but death and taxes.”

  8. In the USA, an ‘Awake’ magazine once reported that on the Internal Revenue Service building, in Washington, D.C bears an inscription: “Taxes are what we pay for a civilised society.” Taxes are compulsory levies which serve as key financiers of public utilities. Today, the system is a global phenomenon albeit amount, time and scope may vary from country to country. Tax payment is scriptural as the Great Teacher, Jesus Christ himself paid tax and advocated same for his faithful as a mark of obedience to civil authority.

  9. Dear Sata and your Kaponyas,

Kindly know that; Tax is indispensable in the running of any government, military or civilian, democracy or autocracy. Admittedly, government is the biggest employer of labour in developing economies. Unarguably, it is the highest spender, therefore needs money to provide essential services for her citizens.

  10. Rupiah has farm workers at his farm in Chipata, they have worked for him for years. Rupiah does not pay PAYE for them nor NAPSA. Edward Mumbi you have started a war that will catch RB. learn from the age clause MMD wanted to bring about, it quickly caught up with them over RB.
Why cant Mumbi if he is a moralist condemn RB for marrying a toddler akachibelo 3 times younger than him.

  11. Ati ba Lusaka Times……………….ala mwalipwa!!!!!! tamwakwata ilyashi…lyonse ma rubbish….twanaka…elo kale twanaka……PROPAGANDA !!!!!! maybe try to erode those who don`t use the net…unfortunately for you those who don`t use the net are the majority voters and us who use the internet we are the minority and we can see that you are just another PROPAGADA mouth piece….wish you all the best…coz when your reporting starts being compromised its the beginning of your downfall

  12. Ooh am tired of Sata this Sata that. Edward Mumbi and the rest grow up. Find work at any of the chinese run companies. Anyway we will go the Tunisia way if someone gets their usual village votes.

  13. #4
Senior Citizen- Dont behave like an illitrate villager. If Sata has not been paying tax what has ZRA been doing? You have run out of ideas.

  14. Sata’s culture of tax evasion and money laundering are recipe for national economic hemorrhage. Fraudsters such as Sata all over the world tend to carry out economic scams, launder illicit monies, use stolen loot and evade tax authorities.

  15. Sata should learn from US’s former Senate Leader Daschle who lost his Nomination for the DHS under Obama and now jailed for Tax Cheaters Hall of Fame

No country honors and rewards with the national coffer tax evaders, fraudsters and money launderers.

  16. In the US we have learnt that Prominent Democrat Tom Daschle, the former Senate leader and no doubt a lover of all tax hikes, had his nomination by Obama for a Cabinet post torpedoed by the discovery that he was a tax cheat. Most other Obama tax evading nominees suffered a similar fate.

  17. But ba movement for mad dog.s (mmd) fipuba eeeh. No matter what you will say about our beloved Micheal Sata, We will vote for him. We love Sata. He is the only voice of reason who speaks for the poor in this country. Bwezani is not concerned about the poor people of Zambia. Bwezani is more concerned about his family, foreigners especially the chinese, those are RB’s friends. I am telling you the general feeling on the ground is that people are fed up of these crooks in the likes of RB, kafupi (the midget), chi vj (rigger skeleto), ka mulongoti, Big nose shikapoli, dolar yasila, the list is endless. So mulekeni fye Sata umwine, wesu. The next presido. VIVA PF, VIVA SATA.

  18. For these PF kaponyas, paying taxes is for MMD and none partisan Zambians only, spending taxes is for the same kaponyas.

  19. viva HH,young clean presidential material who has never been in any government before and has never passed through any recycling bin or machine like ………………..Don’t Kubeba

  20. mmd, you just impose yourselves on the people of Zambia, they hate you. All these elections you been winning since 1996, mmd you have been rigging, like what Dr. Roger Chongwe said. You have stealing elections. In fact it will be extremely difficult for you to rig this year’s elections. If you do, eeeh, remember Kenya, Tunisia, Egypt, and now it may trickle down. People are angry. Dont be cheated.

  21. # 30 PF kaponya cum Idependent Kaponya,

You are at liberty to travel to Zed and waste your vote on Sata. It remains inconsequential to the aggregate national verdict. You have no marginal utility value whatsoever.

  22. surely ba LT u ev also become an mmd vuvuzela, pliz try to find some tym going into the communities en bring us crdible news, how many stories r u going to copy from znbc, zanis en times+daily. talema plizzzzzzzz nichani kansi? ndipo ndimwe vipuba vakanku, nzelu mulibe everyday mumbi, chifire said Sata this en that.ha ndimwe bo pusa ba LT.mu vale chi online ichi nga mulibe ba kamutola nkani, look at ur friends at watchdog online knasako beve bali balance…matako yanu kuyipa bonse mu team ya nu..fuseki

  23. According to Edward Mumbi Sata is the only evil doer in Zambia. How come Mumbi has suddenly become ‘cleaner than Sata when not so long ago they shared a bed together?

  24. imwe bafikala shut up… blah blah blah… if sata had any case to answer he would have been in chooks (prison) or finished right now. he doesnt have any case to answer thats why the old man is always talking loudly… dont you know politics is a dirty game, there tryin to finish him cause his a threat honestly. am not a PF supporter but its true someone in govt today is having sleepless nights cause of King Cobra… it would have made sense if ZRA was in the forefront to prove him wrong, but they know that his files are all in order. bafikala nakabili

  25. Senoir citizen am sure u am a government official who has nothing to but show your ignorance and low level of thinking on the blog. u cant even influence you maid at home coz the wind of change is over zambia, just like it was in1991. which court has convicted sata of tax evasion? u are just at the same level as thoz running mmd NGOs and that broke a-ss edward mumbi.

  26. #36 here is yo answer:-
    am amazed too…
the truth is SATA is always on ZNBC news, Post newspaper and other government newspapers everyday than our PRESIDENT…. check Lusaka Times whose on the headline SATA, tune to the radio its SATA…. i think the old man needs an achievement award for ever shaking the GOVERNMENT.

  27. #38 Chanda musyakile. And how come sata has become so clean when not so long ago he shared a bed with chiluba? Surely 2007 isnt so long ago!

  28. This is exactly why the pact isnt going anywhere, most of you supporting it are not even in the country. How many of the so called supporters of the pact that turn up in masses at rallies are registered to vote. The average sensible zambian is more content with the devil they know than the one they dont. Sata is a loose canon, voting him into power would be a huge gamble.

  29. This people they are doing a good job to make Sata very popular. What they don’t know is that the more they talk about him the more he get popular which can also turn into a sympathy vote.

  30. Senior Citizen

Please read the headlines of mining total revunue of taxes of 2%.

YES TWO PERCENT OF THE NATIONAL BUDGET.

WHO IS NOT ACTING MORALLY HERE?
COULD IT NOT BE YOUR PARTY OF THIEVES?

WE ALL KNOW WHO THE REAL KAPONYAS ARE AROUND HERE AND YOU EVEN GOT NAMED KAPONYA OF THE YEAR HERE ON L.T
OH SORRY THAT WAS MOST ANNOYING B.UTT LICKER WASN’T IT?

  31. MMD you are really scared down to the bone marrow. Its like every day you have a cold chill that runs down your spine at the mention of the name sata. Your targeted strategy of a degree holder for presidency post could not work after you were disillusioned that the man has a degree. I will not be suprised when next time you start establishing the citizenship of sata. Please be aware that each time you pounce on sata you are indirectly compaining for him and especially that most of people mind set is for change. Sure naimwe gentlemen/ladies 20 years is enough let your friends also try their best. You just want to cling to power until God intervenes and get rid of you (read Daniel 2 vs 44)

  32. Why is it that it is always the opposition who have to prove themselves.

We know most politicians have workers, please ask them to prove they have been paying Tax and Superannuation for their workers. it will be a good battle to fight. Even Chiluba can be asked to prove he paid Capital Gains tax on the millions he put in Zamtrop account. But for SATA, by Tax law , the money is taxable only when he has brought it on Zambian ground. .Ask him after he has got his money in Zambia. But again you don’t pay tax on individual transactions, but on the Gross of a certain Tax period. Sata has accountants who prepare his Tax return each year, so you cant catch him on this one transaction because he is only obliged to do Tax per stipulated period as he is not a PAYE employee
