TWO people have died, while eleven others sustained injuries after a ZAMPOST bus they were in over turned along the Great East road.
The accident occurred Tuesday morning around Chinyunyu area in Chongwe district.
The ZAMPOST bus was enroute to Chipata.
Some accident victims, attributed the accident to lack of concentration by the driver.
They told a ZNBC News crew at the scene that the driver was allegedly trying to Change a CD when the bus overturned.
The casualties were earlier rushed to Chongwe district hospital before being rushed to University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.
And ZAMPOST Head of Security and Investigations Gilbert Mupeta dismissed allegations of negligence on the part of the driver.
Mr Mupeta however said that the company will take care of the needs of all the injured victims.

This Mupeta, was he in the bus to dismiss the allegations. That is what the passengers saw and you can not dispute.
The bus over ‘tuned’?
ba distant,no it dint overturn,it capsized or sunk…2 dead,11 pending, seriously wat do u think happened.
Condolences to those who have lost loved ones. Our Phd students are researching on the need to sue these bus companies heavily in an event of an accident that results in injuries and death of life. Mupeta should be sued. Zambian drivers drive over speed limits on poor roads. the music they play in the buses is too loud that concentration is sometimes difficult. Changing CDs by the driver other than the conductor while driving should be prohibited. Offenders should be fined heavily.
This is unforgiveable. While we are arguing over who was doing what when the bus overturned, someone is going to wake up tomorrow suddenly without their beloved relatives! These accidents have to stop. ZAMPOST should be penalised for this if they want to take the heat on behalf of their driver! We can’t be losing people every year to a totally preventable cause. It is silly!
Gilbert Mupeta you were not there when the accident happened. Neither were you a passenger nor near the accident scene. How can you refute the comment from the passenger who is also a witness. There is a tendency for drivers of changing CDs or trying to do other things which can distract them from their noble duty of driving. It is true what the passenger said. This is true of most drivers who don’t have conductors. Sometimes even when a conductor is there, the driver still wants to operate the musical system just to show off. Imagine, just at Chinyungu, which is not hilly like Luangwa. I have driven on that road for 14 years and have a very good idea of the meanderings and up and downs of the road.
Thank God for those who have survived and i wish a quick recovery to those injured and my condolences to the families of the two lost loved ones. It is sad that Mupeta who is neither a passenger nor a conductor is defending the driver and the bus so much, let the driver speak for him self what happened!
The police wont admit Mupeta’s statement. So, the driver is in shit!
Sick driver …changing CD ? Oh crap
All Mupeta was supposed to say was that they would investigate the issue and not outrightly dismissing the allegations when he was not on the bus at the time the bus got involved in the accident.
I lost a sista through an accident caused by a silly driver!!My condolences to all those who lost there loved ones.
Condolences to the families of the departed and quick recovery to the injured. This was a fairly new luxury HIGER bus. This bus has a TV screen right next to the dash board which in my opinion is a distraction. The named driver (MUVI/ZNBC), is one of the most experienced. This bus is fitted with seat belts but passengers do not wear them. Safety rehearsals like what airlines do should be undertaken by all long distance buses that are fitted with such safety gadgets.
My heart goes to those who have lost their beloved ones. I had such an experience on Xmas eve when I lost a son and daughter still recovering from serious injuries she sustained in a road accident. Its terrible. When is Zampost going to improve its road safety record. Its last year when its bus claimed lives on the Lusaka-Chipata road. Mr. Mupeta as head of security should not play public relation when lives have been lost no amount of financial assistance will amount to the lost lives. The pipo on the bus were witness to the event so why should this man play cheap PR. Pasopo Have respect When a beloved one dies as a result of illness your mind gets prepared as you assess the situation that at this stage anything can go wrong but not in an RTA. Its terrible.
This guy is MMD silly Mupeta
Should have left the job of changing CD to conductor, senseless loss of precious lives! Imagine how long it takes for a person to grow only to be killed in a split second by a careless chap!
