The United Party for National Development (UPND) has declared that it has sufficient ground to win this year’s elections even without its PACT partners, the Patriotic Front.
UPND Secretary General Winston Chibwe says the UPND was formed as a political party with an intention to form government and that it has remained focused to its objective.
Mr. Chibwe explained in an interview with QFM that the party has continued to gain popularity.
He was reacting to UPND Luapula province Chairman Chishimba Chilufya’s Statement that the two opposition leaders Michael Sata and Hakainde Hichilema should resolve the issue of the pact presidency as the pact is the only solution to remove the MMD from government.
Mr. Chibwe maintained that UPND will only agree on the presidential candidate of the pact with the PF after the two parties meet to draw a national development plan.
He has since appealed to UPND members across the country to remain calm and continue campaigning for the party ahead of this year’s elections.

Thats is the reason why Mazoka(mhsrip) had two vice presidents Bob Sichinga(north) and Sakwiba Sikota( western). HH at first had Patrick Chisanga (north) and Charles Kakoma( n/western)..and now they have this other one after they chased Chisanga.

The PF-UPND Pact – A shadow in darkness
IT was a storm in a tea cup. The die hards did not see it that way however. They called all and sundry who had a divergent view on the future of this marriage of convenience as either deluded or demagogues.
The followers, willy-nilly, led the unsure and unprepared couple to the alter claiming that the marriage was made for Zambia’s political heights. I mean the PACT between Patriotic Front (PF) Party and the United Party for National Development (UPND) flattered to deceive the white-mattered supporters and members.
UPND are behaving like someone who has Malaria or HIV/AIDS and continue to insist that hes okay even when all symptoms and signs and tests indicate that they are sick but remain in denial and refuse to seek any medical attention. Tell me what the consequences would be for such a person?
In life you have to accept your status if you are short, Tall, educated, rich,poor, popular or unpopular just accept that. If you dont accept it will be very difficult to change circumstances and emprove.
If UPND feel they are very educated,wise and all that please let them get their degrees,PHDs and all their wisdom and go and win elections alone.

The happenstance looked so real that even the leaders of the respective political formations began living in the reverie as a given.
With the benefit of hindsight, one wonders how a terribly intelligent man like Mr Hakainde Hichilema would be taken for a ride from Mbala to Monze without realising he was dealing with a driver with a well known record of flipping his steering wheel when it suits him!
When a renowned tabloid made right observations alerting the brace in the so-called Pact that there was no real pact between them, arguing gullibly that a true pact is based on a set of principles, the UPND was first off the blocks blaming the messenger for heralding the truth.
They called the editor of the publication all sorts of names albeit in veiled language.
They convinced the members of the UPND that the chronicler was a prophet of doom. They went so far as to call him an enemy of the UPND! In return, the celebrated tabloid bid the UPND bye from its pages.
No sane person draws happiness and joy from the misfortunes of another but if the fellow at the receiving end is as closed to advice as a sheep, then it may be fair to state that the right service has been given to that man.
It is true that the tendency among human beings world-over is to despise advice from sources perceived to be Government supported or leaning.
This is not without merit in many instances but there is a place at times to muse over advice for whatever it is worth.
Hakainde Hichilema is a man many Zambians believed brought freshness and even sanity to the old game called politics.
Many believed that HH, as he is popularly known by friend and foe alike, would as it were, help substantially change the way of conducting political business in Zambia.
After all, here was a Young Turk, unsoiled by the trappings of youth, a successful businessman, adept, with a head between his shoulders imbued with wisdom that is light years beyond his age.
With this nonsense going on in the Pact we might as well brace ourselves for another 20years of MMD rule.
The name HH sent shivers and hopes in almost equal amounts down the spines of his nemesis and the hearts of his admirers- well that was before he met one Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front fame.
King Cobra, as Sata is fondly known, is an ancient and cunning politician. He is a man full of scheming.
An asset when on one’s side but a deadly finisher when he is rattled the wrong way.
Mr Sata knows he is a nimble-footed political player. He is astute as any in the game.
He never ceases to impress. A populist of populists and a doyen of the man in the street.
Here is a man who one dares to ignore at his or her own political peril.
Ah how he manages to re-invent himself just when everyone thinks he is down and out!
The foundation of the PF-UNDP was on terra firma or so the agitators claimed.
The vaulted skies seemed to have taken on a deeper hue when shouts of “MMD Kuyabebele” reverberated the birth of this alliance.
It appeared as the Third Force that Zambians, so the founders of the PACT said, yearned for.
It was hailed as the political panacea to the humiliating defeats that the opposition political parties have thrice-suffered at the hands of the MMD since the advent of plural politics in Zambia in 1990.
The common chorus has been that the opposition political parties needed a common front to defeat the indomitable MMD.
A PACT of so called opposition giants in the names of PF and UPND was branded as the juggernaut that would definitively deal a death knell on the MMD once and for all.
How boisterous the supporters of the PF-UPND PACT were in those days!
Many readers will recall how the PF-UPND PACT pundits frowned upon all those who called for sobriety over the preliminaries.
Many wondered how two political parties, that were poles apart in policy persuasions and character would co-exist and share the same political bed in government.
The leaders of the PF-UPND Pact were quick to dismiss such sentiments as an MMD ploy to divert the PACT from their central mission vis-à-vis to wrestle political power from the MMD!
Granted the PACT charges were perhaps sincere, but plausibly it cannot be said that they were oblivious of the fact that a PACT build on shifting sands of deceit, manipulation, opportunism and craftiness would only last the length of a dream when one wakes up in the morning.
It is also arguable that Sata, that great political dealer, was not alive to the fact that a true PACT needed a unity of purpose.
Is not Sata on record as having variously and uncharitably painted HH as an underdog, a junior partner and even a political green horn?
That notwithstanding, HH seems to have been hoodwinked into believing that his partner was a sincere virgin in the deal.
How naivety can blackmail even rich and well fertilised minds like HH’s!
It should not take a rocket scientist to see through the whole hoax today.
The diversions, evasions, political stunting seen when it comes to core questions respecting the future of the PACT are all there as clear indicators for those with eyes to see that there are no principles governing this PACT.
It is, as one tabloid rightly observed, a PACT without a pact! It is a mirage meant to occupy the naïve among us.
HH clearly believes in one thing and Sata another.
HH in his heart of hearts believes for instance that Zambians will not see a Sata Presidency as a change they would believe in!
He secretly sees no difference between the status quo and a Sata administration. HH would rather have a fresh pair of legs than a Sata-led government.
He is just shy of saying he is the man for the hour!
HH nostalgically dreams that, he and not Sata and certainly not RB should assume Zambia’s topmost job

HH, from the look of things, believes that he is Zambia’s messiah and that the time for the gray-horned politicians to exit Zambia’s political dais has come.
The messages coming from the PF and UPND rumour mills are filled with hunches that the hour has come, for HH and Sata to come out of the falsehood and state clearly, that the PACT has died a natural death.
The two leaders must also put the tempestuous hearts of their followers to rest by being categorically clear that they have been insincere from base to summit.
To continue playing hide and seek will not do.It is time also for the PF-UPND PACT co-spokespersons to stop living in a cocoon. As a sage of a better age famously said (and I paraphrase) “claim no easy victories, hide neither difficulties nor the truth from the masses of our people…”
There is no shame in HH owning up because after all he, and not Sata, stands to gain from being sincere.
It may be easier to ask a leopard to change his spots than to expect the King Cobra to shed his political skin. HH must surely know this truism.In memoriam, may all former believers in the PF-UPND PACT accept this intimation that the PACT died a lonely and miserable still-birth blamed squarely on the poor maternal efforts of the uncaring midwives.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I was in Zed during the Christmas break and what I witnessed nearly broke my back from sobbing. Do you know that load shedding has become part of Zambia now?. You can stay up to 4 straight days without power. Roads in the townships are impassable. I went to Nakonde and the road has transformed back to the hell run.
There will be too much to fix on the table when a new Government comes in. To Delay the PACT on the basis of a Development Agenda is pure wickedness on the part of Politicians. Zambians now need a Government that cares for its citizen regardless of political inclination, tribe or color. Corruption and Disease will triple next 5 yrs if HH and Sata do not seal a deal to rid UNIP/MMD from Power.

April fools day has come early this year. I think it’s election syndrome hitting UPND. I am no MMD nor PF but they have to be realistic that it can’t happen especialy with the machinery of Government that MMD enjoys. But I’m sure they’ll do well this year though in my opinion it’s better they go it alone and fight Gov of the day in parliament.

TO FAIL TO PLAN IS TO PLAN TO FAIL. This is not rocket science, Winning elections is not and should not be seen as an end in itself. Its not the final goal, no. As a Zambian, I am interested in what happens to my Country AFTER the winning of the elections. Where is the plan for the pact on national development which I will use to assess whether or not we are making progress? Without the plan, how will I hold the pact to account? This is the question every interested Zambian should be asking. Once the plan is laid out, then and only then should we talk about WHO should lead. Its called choosing a man equal to the task. The mighty UPND won the 2001 elections according to the Independent organisation that tallied the 2001 elections according to the media reports and the UPND will do it again probably this 2011 presidential elections to form GRZ Administration. The said 2001 win by the UPND was done without PF and/or the Post Fudge (PF) Magazine in a PACT just like UPND won the 2010 Chilanga MP by-election without the coverage of the PF Magazine, POST.
What UPND needs to do now is to rekindle the spirit of those Zambians that promised that in 2011 elections, they will vote for HH to form the UPND GRZ Administration so that this year UPND makes both PF and MMD to remain as shells.
This is the time for us the young generation to rule Zambia without or with the old 70+ yrs men.

There is nothing new with what HH has said here. This is the same message HH has been hammering over and over that to defeat MMD we need a united opposition! In saying this HH is not implying in any way that he will be Sata’s vice nor is he suggesting that UPND is losing popularity.

I am glad that you are a keen follower of my blogs. Yes, I do believe that HH can win the next elections but, just like Mazoka in 2001 & Sata in 2008, MMD will not allow him to form govt. It will be difficult to remove MMD(or any other African govt) from power as long has the margin of their loss is small. As a ruling party they have the the means to manipulate the results in their favour. The current political setup were the major parties(MMD, PF & UPND) draw their support from regional bases can not produce an outright/comprehensive winner.
