Zambia has been conferred with the 2008 Water Cup Gold and Silver Medals for having one of the world’s highest percentage of protected areas for conservation of natural resources which are key to economic development and improvement of people’s livelihoods.
The award is from WATERS SOCIETY, a leading international conservation organization based in the United States of America.
In a letter to Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Michael Kaingu, Waters society President, John McCrystal, extolled Zambia for making significant contribution to the creation of protected areas for conservation of natural resources.
Mr McCrystal commended Zambia for attaching great political-will to conservation of nature in the country, to better the lives of the people.
He pledged to work with the Zambian government in supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing conservation of natural resources in protected areas.
And Mr. Kaingu said the award would be dedicated to the late President Mwanawasa for his commitment to sound environmental management which was backed by appropriate environmental laws.
Mr. Kaingu said the late President demonstrated real commitment to environmental management and tourism development as reflected in the 2030 vision which spells out Zambia’s development roadmap.
One third of Zambia’s land mass consisting of 19 National Parks, 34 Game Management Areas and Wetland Areas of international significance are also under protection. National forests are also under protection by law.
The country also boasts of 3,600 protected Heritage sites which include Aetiological sites, geological sites and geo-physical sites which are tourist attractions.

All well and good but all this environmental conservatism should somehow translate into tangible economic value which Zambians or atleast the indigenous inhabitants of these areas can benefit from. For example the proceeds from tourism from these areas can be used to provide basic necessities like health care and clean water supply from boreholes.
congratulatons Zambia.
we have all these resources and yet water bills are terribly high. what a shame!
Once upon a time, I used to game-view at Tuta Bridge. After Chiluba, I can see none. Were all animals poached?
Zambia is surely blessed. While at it, what happened tom the story of Legarcy in the Mosi o tunya national park in Livingstone. The debate was heated if i remember correctly with rumour that the late LPM, MHSRIP, had some stake in it. Someone shade more light on it.
#4, there are now trying to restock the area with animals but there is resistance from the locals who’ve moved there. Imagine people making pit latrins on the embankment of the approaches of the tuta bridge. thank God for Levy, who was trying to restore order. the people were told to vacate and some animals have been brought to site.
That’s wonderful for Zambia. However, there so many people who are still drinking unsafe water in other parts of the country. We have utilized these wonderful and abundant water resources in the country.
take for instance the people in kanyama, chunga kabanana and shanty compound who do not have access to clean water.
Wah rubbish dis? Me fully grown now and me never hear ’bout such foolish medals yet! Babylon mental slavery tricks again…dem can’t fool I man Dread!
#8 not funny at all
Did this organisation get to the rural parts of the country before arriving at that decision to award a country with less than 50% of its population accessing clean and safe drinking water?? Aba bazungu ine bani dabwitsa kwambiri; what are they up to?? Fooling us??Emm.
We should not be complacent ati we ve been awrded Gold and whatever medals, we still have a long way to go bwanas!! Wake up from slumber, Zambia, Mother Zambia.
these bazungus are funny also. Maybe its a sympathy award, who knows!
I watched a documentary on a Germany channel showing the Zambezi river. The areas in parts of nwestern and western provinces looked so underdeveloped and the commentator said this was one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world. One could only see grass thatched houses and it was reported that was a typical Zambian house. Nothing was said on conservation and they should not cheat us. They live in those areas. When a Zambian goes hunting he is a porcher but when a musyungu does the same he is a hunter!!!
Is that the only thing zambia can win?
Respec Bun Dem Dread..True ting man..white man dem ah bring nu slavery tricks dem cuh dey move with time…nex ting zedian bredren ah gwan ear is dat white man dem wanna cum elp black man dem run deh water ting pon deh zedian land..trust me bredren and sistren …lets watch slave drivers dem wit a sharp eye..eagles eye mi say..
12. German Zambian..i agree with you about the title u get with color..white man always gets the best title and yet its the same act.they are vey stupid chaps…Vote for me..
#12, true…remember how the media potrayed African-Americans after Hurricane Katrina in the US. For African-Americans it was looters; while for the whites it was…they have found food! This will continue as long as we continue to roll out red carpets whenever whites visit our country. They almost never want you to visit theirs.
Thank you but we can do better than this.
Does it mean that everything now will be named Mwanawasa. Give Mwanawasa a break!
Zambia wake up! You failed to win genuine gold and silver medals in China not so long ago and you are now happy with given ones!! Do not even publish these things you are given for free. Learn to work for them.
I also agreee with the Dreads and others, who greet this report with sceptism. If you read between the lines, you will find that such awards are actually a refined form of bribery. Just like slavery and colonialism arrived via Christian missionaries, this time it environmental laws which are being used to protect Western interests in African resources.
The underdevelopment of our rich continent is the best evidence of the unscrupulous white world, that will always seek to dominate and plunder Africa. It is time we realised their ulterior motives and said NO to their belittling tactics. Africa is not for sale! We must protect and rule our own destiny!
Zambia is already up for grabs? Our land rates have been increased and yet the pensions have not. they simply want to grab the land and sell to brief case investors…! Lord help us.
