Acting President, Rupiah Banda, has assured the Chinese government that the Zambia will continue working on all projects embarked on by the late President, Levy Mwanawasa and his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao.
Mr. Banda said government will continue working in corporation with the Chinese government in fulfilling all economic development activities as per the late President Mwanawasa’s plans.
Mr. Banda said this in Lusaka today when the Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister, Yang Jiechi, paid a courtesy call on him.
Mr. Jiechi is in the country as a special envoy to President Jintao to mourn and deliver a message of condolences to the acting President, the First Family and the people of Zambia.
Mr. Banda pointed out that Zambians appreciate the late President Mwanawasa’s cooperation with the Chinese President, saying the two leaders’ relationship is beneficial to the people of the two countries.
He said Dr. Mwanawasa and President Jintao’s relationship is a clear testimony of what two friends can do for their countries.
“China is not a new person to us. We are extremely happy you came to mourn with us. We have lost a great son of Africa and Zambia. You will see tomorrow how much the late President is appreciated,” Mr. Banda said.
He further noted that Zambia will remember Dr. Mwanawasa for what he did and for all linkages he made in the world for the benefit of the country.
And speaking later, Mr. Jiechi said the late Dr. Mwanawasa is a distinguished leader who will be remembered for his efforts to unite and develop the country.
Mr. Jiechi said Zambians should transform their sorrows into strength so that they steer the economic development which the late President believed in.
“As a prominent leader, Dr. Mwanawasa played a role in regional integration. In passing away, China has lost a true friend. During this time of mourning the Chinese people stand firm with the Zambian people,” he said.
Mr. Jiechi said the China/Zambia relation has set a role model in Africa, saying in the recent years, the two countries have enjoyed fast growing relations due to the efforts of the late President Mwanawasa.
He noted that the political and economic development relationship between the two countries is in good shape, adding that China will always value and support Zambia.
“The late President Mwanawasa followed the One China policy and promoted economic trade. The China-Zambia economic and trade zone is the first of its kind in Africa and is progressing well,” the Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister said.

And if gov is Sata after nov then what will happen??/
chinese investiment and other things associated to china are no good
sorry RB you will just be killing with fake chinese commodities. they make things for quick money.
‘Zambians appreciate the late president M’s cooperation with the chinese government..’! SPEAK FOR YOURSELF RB
What deal is there between MMD and china? Why is it that only the chinese investers are shaking? This is a very big indicator for fake inversters. Zambians will can only know the relationship between these guys when we bring in change. Change must come this time around.
shikulu rupiah i was just thinking we should give you a chance but then again there you go we do realise that there are some real investors but some of them do not even follow work ethics and do not care about our welfare.do not forget the poor safety records at bigrim that killed our people, the counterfeit goods at kamwala, selling of vegetables, dumping of third grade clothes and goods in the zambian market.the whole investor term needs to be revisited at least i know HH would do something but then he is considerd regional but i know he would rise anove that one day
Leaders should not put their personal preferences at the expense of the nation’s.Whether its china or India or America,it should be at the nation’s interests
Did you people know that even developed country are in a hurry to do business with china when all economies seem to be going down hill there is growing so dont blame them if our own policies encourage them to take advantage of us.
Ifwe mu PFwe are ready 2 wrk with them but bafwile baishiba ati mwikala patalala mwine apatalalika.mr sata this is a crucial fight we have 2 win make calculated moves, no care less talk this is a clear penalty we just need little effort to score.
chinese investment, chinese investment, do you RB know what the term investment means? A group of chinese fellows selling vegetables and icecream on the streets? You pipo in gov must open your big eyes or else you will lead us into a big gorge. no wonder pipo are saying RB is a wrong chap to vie for the top job. Iwe ka M’membe naiwe you really think you are a small god ayii? you think Magande is HOLY HOLY of the HOLIES. can you tell us something about the alleged transfer of USD900,000.00 by Magande from the min. of fin to Sisala’s mismanaged ZESCO meant for appeasing party (NEC) officials. why can you take a neutral position and analyze all the other applicants on level terms?
It appears LPM,MMD and the Chinese had some hidden agendas. We just hope one day we shall know what agreements Levy and the Chinese had.Anyway, we hope all will go well.
If china had hidden agendas with MMD then we shall not allow them to jump on the boat. Let them sink together with RB.
Only Chinese and European investors can put up investments in African countries. As for the Americans just forget. They have a very low opinion of Africans. It is easier to find a positive news article in a European publication than an American one. In America the only news about Africa is disease, pverty and how American charities and their govt are helping Africa. The Chinese have put up Africa’s largest copper smelter in Zambia. This will add value to the concentrate that is been exported out of the country. The problem with you Zambians is that you do not know what is good for you. Americans can never put up such a facility in Zambia.
#14 well said true to every word
Banda go and occupy the office at State House iwe, you don’t have to sleep there. You can sleep at government house of course but it is not meant for a head of state or receiving dignitories. Also State house has more security for the acting head of state. You don’t have to go to Mwanawasa’s residence, I know your ka wife is insecure that you may frolick with Maureen. But please work out of State house and use the staff and facilities…
iwe dark knight explain yourself niwe shu shu shu if the man moves into office right now how would it look “very politically incorrect”
About Americans just forget them. They are proud and boastful war-mongers. They can only build something in Zambia if they are going to gain more from you. Copper is nothing to them, but one drop of oil and they’ll smell it. Look at the situation in Iraq.
Let us focus on the South Africans and the Europeans as trading partners.
It is not surprising. even the preparation of LPM’s grave has been contracted to a Chinese firm. How ironic!
PONYAX is right , why are the chinese panicking if they have fair investments benificial to Zambia ?.
I think the chinses are bankrolling MMD for the investments in zambia.
i will definetly vote for HH.
But why did those chinese at NFC – Chambishi call an emergency meeting immediately they heard that levy had a stroke and was in an Egyptian hospital? When there was the earlier rumour that LPM had died, they started flocking Stanbic with empty suitcases. Thanx to BOZ rules that you can’t draw more than $5,000 per day. A demand of $3m from a bank counter only shows how desperate a Sino investor can be to escape from the memories of King Cobra.
Off topic bane…i clicked on the ad to meet some Zed gals online…atase, i regret.
PF /UPND For the sake of mother Zambia, MERGE and bury these Mad Muwelewele’s Devils, MMD. They are not fit to rule even monkeys in trees. Enough of their plundering and rubbish. Let us UNITE. We have had enough of them. They have the machinery to rig but we shall have the masses to prove otherwise.
PF /UPND UNITE,UNITE,UNITE AND SAVE MOTHER ZAMBIA
Spot on brother – sick and tired of these MMD fools – all they want is to perpetuate their wealth – non of them has a service mentality. They want to get rich off poor Zambians. Its pathetic – no wonder foreigners laugh at us!! We even employ bus boys as experts!! Zambians lets learn from Levy’s mistakes – chinese?? Please…
It’s MaCain Vs Barack RB vs HH things will start heating after the president has been put to rest. Watch the space
WHY assure china and not other investors from o ther countries. Is it only china which has developed punku with the death of levy? What deal did he make which Zambians are yet to know?
Zambia is the largest exporter of copper in africa but then the one of the poorest countries in the world. Australia is not even the largest export of steal. But china imports most of its steal for construction etc, but Australia is growing (or improving) with china.
Death is natural. You don’t need to appologize to china 4 the death of an individual. By the way china build the state of the art stadium in ndola.
Ati rupiah Banda is a shameless judas who has betrayed levy imwe sure what has become of the post? And I thought DDay is Friday for the MMD are they working for mmd anyway let’s wait and see because after this if rb goes thru we shall see another party called ULP or something along those lines
Thank you for that RB. I have got a few kwachas to give to those villagers to vote for you so we can continue exploiting your people. I have started buying shake shake for those who will be organising. I have got a few meters of Chitenge material for their wives also.
Once they vote for you, we are done! Good deal there RB. I am just keeping my fingers crossed. Please please my friend RB, we have have just shiped some more vegetables destined for Zambia. I do not know what we would do with them if by the time they get to Zed MMD is not in power.
#9 BA-CIA, developed countries are using china’s cheap labour for goods and services-there is a difference of what you think. China is exploiting Zambia to create jobs, produce services, and goods in china. eg, most american and british (etc) companies have relocated their production plant to china to go and take advantage of cheap labour there to even make more profits back home on manufactured goods in china. The question is, “what is zambia take advantage of out of china?” The answer is nill. Mind u western countries have economist, scientist, and tecnologist who plan for even a century ahead. So they know whaT they r doing in china. Whereas we dont know what the chinese r doing in zambia
RB, WHAT ZAMBIA NEEDS ARE PROPER INVESTORS – WHETHER THEY ARE CHINESE OR NOT !! INVESTORS SHOULD NOT FLOOD THE ZAMBIAN MARKET WITH CHEAP PRODUCTS AND SELL THINGS AT KAMWALA THEREBY ROBBING THE STRUGGLING ZAMBIAN BUSINESS PERSON HIS LIVELIHOOD. WHY DON’T THEY GET INTO MANUFACTURING SECTOR WHICH IS WHAT THEY ARE GOOD SO JOBS CAN BE CREATED INSTEAD OF JUST BRINGING FINISHED PRODUCTS AND LIVING IN CHAISA COMPOUND. INVESTORS INDEED!!
#27 – DO NOT BELIEVE ALL YOU READ IN THE POST ! THEY HAVE AN AGENDA – TO SUPPORT MAGANDE AND MAUREEN MWANAWASA AT ALL COSTS !! THE QUESTION FELLOW ZAMBIANS SHOULD BE ASKING IS WHY ???
#10, Yes, PF never said they will chase the chinese. But they have always said the chinese have to respect the rule of law on which other opposition parties have remained mute whilst they see the pewople of zambia being exploited. They have chosen to be politically correct. Service to the pipo is not about being young. Its about being practical in whatever you preach. SATA fights for the pipo thats why they love him. And mind you politics (service to the people) is not a fashion parade.
guys mwamvela at na bena dora siliya bafuno chitako contest.
RB does not even know what “investment” is. investment and exploitation are two different things. exploitation and keeping a blind eye is not acceptable what is the policy on foreign investors when they come into Zambia. can someone please explain to us?
let’s wait and see. Mr Banda seems to be sure of contituing, hence promising….I don’t mind the Chinese as long as a few things conditions are put in place. I will propose them later. Congrats LT, getting better all the time.
I meant “continuing”.
#29,32 Peter,
Your analysis is quite good. What i do not accept is to blame the Chinese for the low quality goods and exploitation of the Zambian people. The bureu of standards is NOT functioning in Zambia hence anything produced anywhere, not even from China is dumped on us. May be these low quality goods are allowed in our country because thats what an average Zambian can afford. Elsewhere like Europe, America or Japan, Chinese products are of high quality and moderately expensive. Mind you even South Africans and Europeans exploit us because we allow them to do so. It all boils to one word REGULATION
This is interesting. How can RB assure the chinese as if he is winning the bye election. PF is strategising be careful RB.
#38 Senior Cop
RB was assuring the Chinese in his capacity as Acting President. He addressed the Chinese because their foreign affairs minister called on him according to the LT article.
#Aha thas funny!
#28 Aha that`s funny!
it seems to me that some of u really dont know they real communist china! all i can say is be very aware of those little guys.. be very carefull!!!!!they have black mailed our dull government and zambians think that we are moving forwad..bane open yo eyes……
First of all anybody that imports substandard goods should be punished, but again our leaders are just so ignorant and the divided opposition enables them to act foolishly at the expense of the people and the nation.
Twafweniko please, RB does not know a thing, the least we need is Chinese presence in Zambia. These people are terrible and just flood our country with fake and sub standard products. I would like see this guy (RB) being being interviewed on a live program, so we see what kind of president he can make and we scrutinze him. This man is old and has no vision for the country. Don’t we have intelligent and visionary people to lead the country surely. I can see my country going 20 years backwards with RB as president!
Ba LT next time do not say this way:
“Mr. Jiechi is in the country as a special envoy to President Jintao…”
In Chinese culture, just like anywhere else,Hu, the family name is what you write in the context given here. Take note that the chinese family name comes before the other names. So the correct rendering should be “…President Hu..”I noted this misnomer in nearly all the papers in Z when Hu Jintao was there. You gain points when you are a step ahead of the pack, mind you. That’s free consultancy.
# 44 please substantiate your statements when you write like that.Such blanket ‘misrepresentation’ of facts is what we do not need in Zambia. Just becoz the West is saying that about China doesnt make them better. Remember people buy goods on the basis of what fits their budgets (all things considered), and if the chinese goods fit the bill then naturally people buy, nobody is forced (thats the way of markets). There is also public regulation of what goods are purchased/admitted from outside (as someone has noted above), but regulation is not merely based on assumptions of standards – these must be clearly stipulated and enforced to!
# 46 ending correction “…stipulated and enforced!”
Maureen, M’membe, Magande and other minnions in the magande camp, we are watching you under huge magnifying glass. why have you conttineued to mislead the masses you fools! It apperars that Magande’s quest for the top job is a matter of life and death for you pipo. you are making him bad yourselves by your foolish and very unethical practices. I dont support RB myself but i’m disgusted by your actions such that i’m slowly falling for RB but GOD FORBID!, i shouldnt. I m very sure alot other people are disguted too. Zambia is not synonymous with the post. Mark my words, the post is destined for the fall. Pride comes before a fall. Watching you..
#31. Good point. How does Banda all of a sudden become Judas. There is no concrete evidence to support Maureens words . She could have her own agenda with Magande and getting back at Teta for telling the pipo to ommmit her. Something stinks with the post on this!
As for China products, pipo seem to forget that most of the population can afford these products and not the SA’s and Europe. Start paying the common man well they won’t buy these cheap products. Right now this is the only option. Half a loaf of bread is better than nothing!!
#46 Please read widely. #44 is very right about the Chinese. Do you know why Mugabe resisted to handover over power ? It is because of the Chinese. China has built Mr Mugabe a house worth 4.5 million British pounds in Harare fitted with latest electronic security systems including anti-aircraft missiles. This follows the deal struck in 2005 where mugabe handed over to china his country’s mineral rights, including the worlds second largest reserve of Platinum worth 250 billion pounds.
Furthermore, look at the deals the Chinese have clinched with the tyranical government of Sudan for Oil and that of “Minerals for infrastructure” deal in the DRC. Watch RB and the Chinese. He will sale ZED..
can RB please tell us what he has don for this nation so that we gain confidence in him, otherwise he is not better than magade except that he is a tongabull ba moureen balandako that brings alot of suspiciuse to the continuity of the farmily tree.
CONTD
The chinese are so cunning that they come in softly and by the time you realise what they are upto it will be very late. RB is not the right person to handle the chinese. Sorry iam not a politician but this is vital advice to my fellow country men…
Only time will tell if R.B is full of intergrity. Tuletamba no kumfwa all that is said and done. Ba late may not have been perfect but he did raise the bar. R.B MUST make sure the CITIZENS in the outskirts of Zambia are EQUALLY empowered. Zambia is for Zambians!!!
Some one tell me please, does this mean that because RB being endorsed by the MMD , NEC makes him the president of the MMD party . if so then it realy makes no point in being a hard cor Die hard suporter of MMD if an outsider …nominated can just WALTZ into the parties #1 spot without breaking a sweat.
You MMD chaps are Fools if you going to take this kind of Crap ..realy.
I thought MMD had a constitution inplace to for such reasons . You would have had to prove yourself and have an air tight CV to run for the top spot . .
what all ya all MMD fools have failed to grasp ,is that RB is a Political prostitute .
Questions
who realy is RB ?
Who realy will be in Control will it be RB?
Power is sweet like one short man said in the not so distant past . be warned all you MMD clowns pushing for RB as your president .
If your plan is executed , dont be alarmed when the same RB turns round and tells you all to F@#$ yourselves and starts to appoint his own relatives and trusties from time way back to secure his line of defence , and starts dropng you all like its hot . what do you think you would be ablse to do to him ….NOTHING .RB will sooner that later come to realize how much power he truly commands. and when the day does come . Dont cry foul. You created a monster now deal with it.
Mr Chinese envoy go back and tell your president that Sata is about to enter state house so that nonsense of Zambia supports one china policy is about to finish. Sata has made it clear he supports Taiwan.Taiwan is a much serious investor than China
# 55 well said, we may all be thinking RB is down to earth but this man has never been tested in a position of power. It is possible he may taste power and change like a chameleon. He will bring his own adviser from Chipata, some old school mates from Malawi, a couple of UNIP clowns, before you know it the whole legacy of LPM is down the drain.
Our politics are so backwards we are 1000 years behind the states or even RSA. RB has not even indicated what his policies are, how he intend to fight corruption, he has nt even assured the nation that he will continue where LPM left off. Yet from nowhere we think he is the best person for the country.
Honest investment is welcome from all corners of the earth, neocolonialism and exploitation are to abhorred and resisted with all our strength.
pipo what is this i hear that Cynthia Kanema has gone crazy
sleeping with other pipo’s hubbies and that one FURIOUS wife is
spreading her (cynthia details) on the net…
Big names have been mentioned here and its really scary if it is
true. But i would urge y’all to take this with a pinch of salt as it
could be very damaging if it’s not true.
# 55 & 57
I like your observation but this can be the same for all that aspire for power you give them a chance and that is the only way you know there true colour. Remember FTJ we thougt will change our lives what we didnt know was if it will be positive or negative.
#58 Brrrrr
Just to update you there is a funeral a period of moaning and as acting president he is supposed to focus on maintaining the peace and not making campaign speeches before they even bury his boss. Its a shame that there is only 2 days for the MMD to choose a candidate to stand we could have liked to have a week or 2 to see who says what on development policies.
I have a copy of the Cynthia STORY but first lets bury and mind you,
this is just a rumour.
Editorial Comment
Rupiah, a shameless Judas Iscariot. ?????
Who has the details? Please, enlighten us!
NO 29, How do you expect Zambia to have big planners when our Universities remain closed half their semester. Look at UNZA, then CBU, -to finish a four degree in Zambia takes you seven years- and not to mention secondary schools where strikes and go slows plus poor teaching and learning conditions are the order of the day. If our education system is supper, probably we would not have some of these foolish things happening.
PF + UPND = ZAMBIAN GOVT
There’s nothing wrong with the Chinese or other foreign investors. The trick lies in recognising that there are no permanent friends; just permanent interests. All investors are out to get the highest return on their investments and it is up to the government to protect our interests.
mwata # 65. you are a true zambian with zambia @ heart. fakila bonse just heed to his advise. sata 4get about yo stubborness, hh just agree or disagree in order to agree with the big man.
we are sick of the mmd (Mwalya Mweka Daddy)
we want change !!!!! we want change !!!! we want change !!!!

Mr Banda.
The issue is safegaurding our natural resources to work for zambia and her people. our copper is going very fast without any development in our country.
please make sure ifibusa fyakwa Lunshi TEFYO IYOO>!!!
Forgive us we are as equaly corrupt as those we condem and point our dirty finger at.
We want a person who can protect us and our interests eg Zambian Airways, Plunder Cases (we are also plundering via our HIGH LEGAL FEES from as “MNB Legal practioners), and some other deals which we are hidden under.
Ifwe ba POST tukondema balya abatuchinga.
So Magange is our choice and that is why we have descided to BE HIGHLY UNETHICAL by openly and shamelessly and without fear to OPENLY campaign for MAGANDE.
AH!Now i see and understand why the Post Paper have tried by all means to campaign for magande, and decampaign RB. The language they have used in today’s editorial speak volumes, sure how do you use such tone and words on a fellow human being? This is language of desperate and defeated person, its clear that the person they wanted wont win.Southern province again have rejected him in preference to RB.cilemoneka balimwishiba bwino sana.
The POST hate RB…their candidate is Magenda. You can just tell from the way they have been writing. They preaching ONLY bad new about RB..I’m not a supportor of RB or Mangenda. Anyone with good health, leadership qualities can rule our country. LPM will never be replaced, he outnumbered all of them.
I meant hates
#56. This is Jelita,
Silly girl, go home and cook nshima for Mulenga. In case you’re not aware, Sata’s friend Chen Shuibian lost elections to Maying Zhou who recognises Taiwan and China as one country. Your Satan has therefore no business selling Zambia to a province of China that does not want to buy anymore anyway. So before you come to a site like this one to puke sterile news, please verify your facts first.
The Post is disgracing itself!
Ba #6 ba ponyax naimwe its investors not inversters. Ukulanda landa mwakulalufyanya.
mwana wandi #44 wasosa. U are wise thats why you are my child.
No one can ignore the Chinese!! Some of their products for exports are not so bad and their price is competitive!! Yu can buy Chinese goods even in the US and Japan. Japanese and Americans buy Chinese products, who are we Zambians to look down on their products. We dont even have fatctories to talk about!! C
I think most Zambians are not aware of whats happening in the world and can easily be cheated by politician such as SATA!! Only vi Fontinis can be cheated!! I have attended exhibitions and seen big contracys between Chinese and American comanies. Even seminars orgamized by Chinese attract a lot of people. Zambian stop Kulibonesha. USA Or US wont serve you alone, yu need the chines
China now is the largest trading partners for Japan. So why questioning the quality!!If yu are able to pay the market price yu get quality products!! Ngati ulibe Ndarama yu buy rejects, which easily get torn or worn out !!
Beloved brothers and sisters of Zambia, let’s not forget that we do not have oil fields in Zambia. We can say the Chinese are terrible investors, of which I agree, but better we have investors rather than nothing at all. At this stage our government needs to revise the terms and conditions of the contract we have with Chinese investors in favour of our Zambian people. Copper prices have gone high on the world market and that’s a good thing for our country. However, telling the Chinese to leave right away will not solve anything, but will just leave us in a desperate situation.
#77 We are not refuting the developmental projects or their trade relations with Zambia nor are we rejecting thier products but we are worried with the person controlling the steering wheel right now. Even during Kaunda’s error, the Chinese were here and did alot of projects for Zambia e.g TAZARA, TAZAMA Pipe line, Kafue hook bridge, roads and many more. We appreciate their works and its bcoz Kaunda was firm.
RB has kid gloves for investors and if we are not careful, a Zimbabwe situation will spill over here. All mineral rights will be surrendered to these so called investors. ZED be careful crooks are coming back through RB’s incompetences……..
The various responses from PF supporters on China are not suprising! This is typical of M Sata’s supporters; they simply lack the ability to understand world economics. I really sypathise with them! Right now even big powers like USA can not afford not to trade with China, i will not waste time to explain anything here! What i wish to state though is that PF is much more weak this time around than they were during the last election. It is important to note the following: 1) to a PF MP, it is more of an advantage to continue with this leadership as they will earmn more money with the proposed salary increaments which their leader is opposed to 2) The MP have nothing to loses so why bother?
Hey bane i know this might be out of topic but i have a question i think you might help me, WHY are our justices, speaker of the house still wear those stupid white wigs on their heads? werent those wigs used by the british colonizers,i thought by wearing them they look rediculous the fact that zambia is independent i thought that our justice system would wear atleast traditional attire, what do you think baneeee, help me on this one
this is madness.RB wants those”investers” bringing products which cant even withstand the temperature let alone the zambian inviroment.chinese poor products are a shame and they should be ashamed.Lets paddle the Boat.PF Muncende twafika.
Abena China will not leave Zambia..no matter who becomes prezio…eactually they will get better deals with President Sata…and of they mistreat Zambians, Sata will stand up for zambians..
## 81 SEPT-24: You are bang-on right with your observations! Sata will be very disappointed to know that most of his supporters have dubious intellectual capacities. Every hooligan ran to PF because of Sata’s own ragged, rafian, cigar/weed-smoking, whiskey-swigging persona that he successfully built for himself over the past wasted years. He has no chance this time because his party is not a national party, like most of them: HH, Nawakwi, Saki, etc. And we all know about his talent for making tactless tribal outbursts like a child…He almost made northerners seem like they can’t think for themselves. Thank God, Bembas are more intelligent than his short memory. PF deserves a better leader!
ba rupiah dont start to assure nations of anything coz u not hold dat position for long
I am really a UNIPIST, what people call UNIPIST. So It’s very difficult for me perhaps at my age to join another political party. But let me say this that as of now, I am quite attracted to the leadership of President Mwanawasa for several reasons but most importantly his fight against corruption and his openness. his inclusiveness to other polilical parties and listening to other political parties. They may not feel that way but he does listen, we see it. Even people who are looking from a distance feel that he does listen much more than anybody else did hefore since the heginning of multipartism. And also, the rule of law in the country is taking route in the country. I am very attracted t
That’s RB in privacy.MMD shud wake up and know he doesn’t belong to them!!
About the Chinese – Remember that when Hu Jintao visited Zambia he signed 15 agreements with Levy which have never been publicised. One of these removed visa requirements for Chinese. So Banda may already be tied up through the agreements levy signed. Zambians, it is time for an audit of Levy’s so-called LEGACY. Remember too, five Chinese were arrested in Ndola for copper thefts but the case was suddenly dropped – why? Herein may lie reasons for Maureen’s desire to continue where her husband left off.
My opinion is that what ever the Chinese do in Zambia whether it is mining or selling vegetables, it is us Zambians who allow it.
China is the next superpower and our relations have to be strengthened BUT we also have to strengthen our labour laws, investment laws to benefit Zambians.Adequate Enforcement of the laws that are currently in place is also lacking.
While on the topic of fake products, have you seen the queues at the Chinese embassy for visas by Zambians. Our own brothers and sisters are bringing fake products from Guangzhou coz they know fellow Zambians go for cheap stuff. Let us not be guided by xenophobia.
i agree with number 14.westerners will never come and invest in zambia.no zambian has got enough money to invest in mines.if china goes back home and take there most expensive smelter thats when u will see real poverty.our government cant afford that smelter and no american and european come come and invest, they are proud people.its true zambians dont know what they want.the all world is trading with china including the us.a lot of goood now are made in china, cell phones, laptops tv’s etc.the timbaland 50 cent wears is chinese made.so lets try and think not just complaining.
#48. Its you who is a fool iwe nyamulenge. You can’t even spell CONTINUED. RB is ok
#41
I disagree with you my brother. I understand your point, but I dont trust the chinese. They are stealing from our people and supplying us with fake low quality goods. The chinese are taking our raw materials back to china. I do not want to see Mother Zambia getting dependent on another country again. The chinese are just doing that. We need to start manufacturing in our country. Thats when investment will be sustainable. Most chinese investments are not sustainable. Once the goodies are finish, the chinese will move on, dumping a million chinese on our soil. We need to diversify our investment partners.
Beware of the ‘fake’ chinese people. Dont let them take over our beloved country.
I meant #91, sorry.
Ati ba magande bali namilandu ,ACC is on him. The guadian weekly has revealed in the story ” Why the family tree fears Banda” any comment. Read volume 87 of the guardian for details.
#94 Xenophobia and racism are just as bad as tribalism.
You just dont get it do you? For us to start serious manufacturing we need investment, transfer of technology and skills etc. Are you suggesting that money, equipment and skills are already in Zambia and all we need is to start manufacturing? If China had chased away the USA and Japan when they started investing heavily where would China be now?
Besides it is not the Chinese bringing fake goods into the country it is Zambain traders. As someone already pointed out REGULATION must be strengthened for enhanced consumer protection. It is not a Chinese problem it is a Zambian problem. They’ll sell to anyone willing to buy.
RB deserves the postion. PF cadres forget ever your tired Cobra ever entering into state house. He is finsished and may even be beaten by the comedian Ngondo
don’t underrate king cobra .ignore him at your own peril. i know the man very few can march him in terms of campaigning you educated people you think when you talk even villagers tow your line.remember its the villagers who influenced votes in 2006.watch out bane people will decide especially the rural folk
then you know that MMD will take that advantage for they are going to use that. forget about the Kanyama magnitude coz majority are in the villages who benefit the agriculture policy we are talking about as LPM’s sucess.
#96
I am not being xenophobic, i am protecting the interests of our country. China is not the only investing country in the world. We need to diversify our investment sources. Let us not forget that china’s government is very authoritarian. And on top of that there is oppression against the Tibetans, which China has occupied since the 1950’s. They are systematically destroying the Tibetan culture and people. China is about 90% Han, the dominating ethnic group. They have pushed aside the minorities of China. I would definitely be cautious of their actions in our country. Let me be clear, we need diversified investment sources. Being dependent on china will not take us anywhere.

I recognise what you are saying, however, other countries aren’t taking the bait that Zambia is laying. Remember Anglo American? Remember how they packed up overnight and left us high and dry. Despite us having a free market economy for nearly 20 years we have failed to attract the Americans and Europeans, they simply aren’t interested in us.
We can complain about the Chinese dumping sub standard products on us, but why do we continue to buy? It’s simple, if the product doesn’t perform to an adequate standard don’t buy it.
Btw, before the Chinese didn’t we say these same things about our South African friends?
#100 brother sitali, tell us please which investors u need in zambia?as #101 said, remember anglo american, south africans like smart center,hi-fi electric and supreme.what did they do?did they bring development to the nation?but go to the copperbelt and north western now, atleast u can see some activities. iam in russia now and most of the european union members and russia are trading with china and not the us.development takes time.
#26 Very good point Zedi largest exporter of copper in Africa but still under developed, bushe bane kanshi teti twimbe ichitofu naifwe kano ama investors baisa twimbila?? are we so inferior that we can’t mine on our own, why are there no local investors in the mining sector that way at least we can be assured of the money remaining and circulating in the country,Even Senegalise left west africa to come and exploit us.As for Ama chines, even Angola does not recognise them as investors (the boys at export board of Zambia know what am talking about) Have we so soon forgotten Bigrims eehhh.
Come to South Africa, here they understand what it means to have labour laws, the government has set a minimum wage even for maids, if a miner dies underground, they so called investors feel the heat, talk of Anglo America, Goldfields etc they feel the heat, We need the so called investors but the government should set up a more conducive environment for local businesses to prosper and grow, The South Africans have what is called BEE, yes it has it’s flaws but every company is score carded to see how many locals (blacks) they have employed, what social responsibility programs they have etc. The locals can even boast of Patrice Motsepe having been ranked by Fortune top 500 world billionaires
Great article. I’ve saved your site so I can revisit your future articles. Keep up the excellent work!
