MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya says the United Party for National Development (UPND) president HakaindeHichilema should consider contesting as a member of Parliament to gain experience on governance issues.
Meanwhile, Mr Hichilema has maintained that Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata is to blame for the demise of the pact between the two parties.
“It is good that Mr Hichilema has learnt a lesson, and should now consider running for a parliamentary seat,” Ms Siliya said.
She said at a press briefing in Lusaka on March 9 there have been MPs who were presidents and presidents who are now MPs.
Ms Siliya said it is for this reason MMD is encouraging Mr Hichilema to re-channel his energy.
She said the pact between the UPND and the PF died a long time ago.
Ms Siliya condemned PF president Michael Sata and his party members’ attacks on the media.
“You cannot have a leader who is violent, and he has started inciting his members to be attacking journalists,” she said.
Ms Siliya said it is for this reason that Mr Sata should stop using youths for his fight for the presidency.
She said youths have a right to say no to a wrong thing because leaders like Mr Sata are not building the nation, but destroying it.
She said even when the MMD has lost about four by-elections, it has increased President Banda’s popularity since 2008.
“This is so because we don’t work with emotions, but strive for national development,” Ms Siliya said.

Running a government could be the same as running a corporate organisation. Having experience as an MP doesnt mean one becomes presidential material. Leadership is leadership, a natural can lead any organisation to success without having experience in that field. The South African Minister of Finance is a damn good finance minister, who also transformed their Revenue Services to high productive norms (SARS) and yet the guy is a phamarcist. I feel HH has got what it takes, he listens to the people, very prudent financially, rich, young, bold and wise in decision making, close to the people and educated. Check your advice carefully. If HH contests a parliamentary seat most likely PF will be victorious over MMD considering that elections are arround the corner and it takes time for information to filter to rural populations. Rural Zambia will still believe that the Pact is still on and HH will be Vice President of Pact. MMD needs to respect HH and talk to UPND as an equal force not a minor partner. Should HH convince Milupi to be his Vice take Southern, N/Western, Western and some votes arround the line of rail then MMD will have to sweat. I would rather you respect UPND at this stage because it has equal potential to win this year’s elections too.

Mama Dora, just admit that HH is a political genius. By going into a pact with PF, HH has managed to attract a lot of publicity from both MMD and PF supporters who fear lossing out if UPND goes into partnership with either of them. In politics or marketing there is no good or bad publicity, the most important think is to sell your candidate. Unlike the likes of Miyanda, Nawakwi, Milupi etc who hav gone into political oblivion, HH has managed to get himself in the political limelight and established himself as a household name in Zambian politics. He continues to receive free publicity from foes as they desperately try to curb his ever increasing political influence
Some will wonder how this publicity translates into votes? Well, the core UPND supporters who voted for HH in 2008 will remain royal to him and will still vote for him come rain or sunshine. In joining a pact with Sata, HH has endeared himself with most city voters who predominately voted PF in 2006( at that time they were sure who HH was). Following a well cordinated strategy, the HH team has managed to convince a good number of these Lusaka and C/B voters to blame Sata for the collapse of the pact and a good number of them will switch to HH, so he will be chewing into Sata’s support base.
The Post newspaper realised that HH was receiving free publicity hence their decision to stop covering UPND but this was a little bit too late because the HH tidal wave had already gained momentum & it keeps flowing using alternative media like QFM to reach these urban voters.
On the other hand the MMD are worried about the HH factor because most pro Mwanawasa voters who are angered by RB’s prostitution with Chiluba and his abandoning of the Levy legacy are more likely to back HH. Sata has tried to endear himself with such voters by rebranding himself as a champion of Levy’s legacy through the Post Newspaper. Unfortunately this won’t wash because most pro Mwanawasa voters in Central, C/B rural, Western, N/W and Lusaka rural know who Sata is and are very unlikely to support him. It’s no coincidence, therefore, that UPND has been performing well in these areas in recent bye elections.
With these factors in mind it would be f.oolish for anyone to think that HH can not win the forth comming elections. HH can win but the margin of his win will not be large enough due to regional politics in Zambia and this will encourage MMD to rig the elections as they did in 2001. To those who might have misunderstood his statement that on his own he can’t win this is exactly what he meant. The same will apply to PF if by some miracle they emerge victorious.

After breaking the Pact, the strategy of MMD now is to break UPND. MMD is very clever. I am sure OP has told them that there biggest threat in this coming election is UPND and not PF. Asked in what sense Siliya should improve her morality, Mulongoti started his response with a laugh.

If you have nothing to say about HH being your challenger as he has already grabed 3 seats from your MMD, then you better keep silent. Success in Zambia is very rare. That is why people like dora think that being an mp or minister is the ultimate success. Am Zambian by birth and living in my parents country of origin. May i register concerns over gullibility growing among fellow Zambian youths with regard to political stances they take to support old and recycled politicians. in my opinion real change would only be achieved by the your generation and HH is the Closest option to represent our interests and match the present times. For real success starts from private life.
