FDD wont contest presidential by-election

The Forum for Democracy and Development-FDD has resolved not to participate in the forth-coming presidential election.

During a meeting in Lusaka, Sunday, the party said it will instead take part in the other presidential election scheduled for 2011.

FDD President, Edith Nawakwi, said her party will contest the polls in 2011 under a new constitution, which will require that a presidential candidate wins by 50 plus one vote.

Zambia goes to the polls in November in a presidential by-election, following the death of president Mwanawasa on August 19.

A debate on whether or not Zambia should hold a presidential by election is gaining momentum.

The ruling MMD and other political players have suggested that the country foregoes the election because it is expensive.

However, the main opposition parties, the Patriotic Front and the United Party for National Development have strongly opposed the suggestion.

The say there is need for Zambia to respect the constitution as doing the contrary will be setting a bad precedent.

  5. Good news from Nawakwi. Pave way for more progressive leaders. MMD must go out. Zambians shall proceed with elections as earlier planned. The constitution is above all these useless suggestions to forego a by-election.

  99. It seems to me that nobody in Zambia pays attention to the stipulations of the constitution, or it could be that our constitution is a meaningless document. According to the constitution, a person born out side Zambia cannot be elected as president of the republic and cannot even act as president. That said, MR. Rupiah Banda was Born in Gwanda, Zimbabwe in 1937, that effectively disqialifies him to hold the hifhest office in Zambia. Now, it buffles me to see even lawyers like Saki suggesting that Rupiah Banda should assume the presidency without an election. This is also Levi’s fault (MHSRIP), he was selfish leader, he disregarded the constitution when he made the appointment.

It prevents him from being president of the country, Levy mentioned it to the selfish cabinte ministers that his preferred candidate was Ng’andu Magande but they decided not to head his advise. how I wish someone could challenge the candidacy of RB so that the selfish MMD is taught a lesson.     (d) he is a member of, or is sponsored by, a political party;
    (e) he is qualified to be elected as a member of the National
    Assembly; and
    (f) has been domiciled in Zambia for a period of at least twenty

  152. HH and Sata should not team up. These two disagree on so many issues like foreign policy and domestic policy. Parties should only join hands if they have same idiology. Sata and Banda are tired men. I had expected MMD to adopt Mutati but I think with Banda they have messed up big time.Which leaves HH with a real chance.
