2. The PF regime should have left Zamtel in private hands…. it has failed yet again as a parastatal,while the other two competitors Airtel and MTN are thriving….. why???? There is NO money now for endless bailouts for loss making parastatals.It sounds like a no brainer to me,just privatise the damn thing….

   • Everything was sold when PF borrowed money the country could not repay. That is the whole point of saddling a country like Zambia with US 30 billion in debt. Now the IMF owns us. UPND is just being made to the inevitable

7. Privatizing Zamtel is not a bad idea. I mean, what strategic importance does this company have after setting up ZICTA?

   • It is a terrible idea. This is a key asset, like the roads of the country, that must be operated as a service and not as for profit corporation. This is company which must provide telecommunications services in areas where it may not be profitable because this is necessary for the development of the country.

   • It’s sad that the countries that encourage us to privatize our assets still hold onto theirs… it’s a pity we appear to be incapable of anything.

   • This has nothing to do with patriotism as it is a practical problem. The notion that Zambians cannot run anything is baseless because Zambians are running foreign companies anyway. That said, Zamtel is a genuine underperformer and has used taxpayer funds for recapitalization more than once. Privatizing Zamtel is a smart idea, but it has to be orderly and should allow for part listing on the LuSE for citizens to participate as well as getting an equity partner that will own the controlling stake (Local or Otherwise)

   • The problem is that UPND inherited a US $30 billion debt trap. The whole purpose of giving Zambian loans it could not repay was so that in order to get relief from that debt, it would be forced to sell its assets. This is how the game is played the problem here is what PF did not what UPND is doing. UPND is powerless, and to get money from the IMF, these are conditions it must accept

WE HAVE BEEN CRUCIFYING OUR VERY OWN ZAMBIAN CITIZEN FOR BUYING ASSETS DURING THE MMD PRIVATISATION AND LEBELLED HIM NAMES WORSE THAN THE DEVIL. PRIVATISATION DOES NOT MEAN FOR FOREINERS ONLY, STEP UP YOU ZAMBIAN PEOPLE AND TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR OWN ASSETS RATHER THAN HOPING GOVT WHICH IS LIMITED WILL DO EVERYTHING FOR YOU.     • The assets belong to all Zambians. The Zambian people should control their own key industries. What we do not need is the continued sharing of our resources among a few people. The fact that YOU ARE a Zambian does not give you the right to appropriate to yourself something that belongs to everyone.
