UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema-Accused of being undemocratic

Five parliamentary candidates have resigned from the opposition UPND and have since filled in their nominations as independent candidates following the party’s decision to leave them out of adoption.

The five candidates have accused party president Hakainde Hichilema of adopting unpopular candidates he has close relation with.

One of the five candidates Joshua Ng’andu who claims to have been assured by Mr. Hichilema of a possible adoption has charged that the UPND leader will pay the price for imposing unpopular candidates.

Mr. Ng’andu says it is wrong for Mr. Hichilema to accuse the Patriotic Front of being undemocratic when his party has been engaging in under-hand methods to adopt candidates.

He has therefore challenged Mr. Hichilema to tell the nation why in nearly all the 19 constituencies in the province, the party has independents adding that in Mazabuka district alone has four UPND aspiring candidates who are contesting as independents.

Mr. Ng’andu says UPND will this year be buried because its leader has lost direction and preferred to support his old friends whom he says are unpopular.

Other candidates have charged that Mr. Hichilema can no longer be trusted because he has betrayed the provincial executive committee which had earlier recommended candidates according to the desire of the grass roots in their particular constituencies.

Those contesting as independents include, Eugene Munyama and Keith Chemu for Magoye constituency, Shadereck Mwiinga for Mazabuka central and a Mr. Nakanga for Chikankata constituency.

Efforts to get a comment from UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma and his deputy Cornelius Mweetwa proved futile as both their mobile phones were unreachable by broadcast time.

  1. Most of these chaps are just after the benefits of being in Parlia, forget about Party allegiance and serving the people!!

  2. I knew that this was going to happen. And it is not just 5. Check filings in other constuencies. More than five have file as independents. The party is full of corruption. You can bribe your way to being an adopted candidate. Wait for more news!!! Peoples choices were not respected by the leadership. They will pay a heavy price by losing to independents.

  3. This thing of adoptions, most parties have messed up RB too! In Nakonde MMD changed a popular candidate for a stranger. Imagine Makamache had the highest Votes for the President and the Biggest Difference with his opponents for thoz wo won on MMD in the Northern all in the name of listening to the ‘grassroots’. The opposition has already stated celebrating, even UNIP decided to field a candidate this time imagine!
And the waste part, the new candidate has 40 dayz to find resources, print campaign materials and sell himself in that big constituency……..Politics!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. The problem with most of these chaps just want to be MP’s to gain cash this is trying to hold a party at ransom.

  5. They are being paid by the party which specialises in bribing-mmd, to splint votes in Southern. Few days before voting day, you will hear these same chaps withdrawing their candidature to support the mmd candidate. VJ has already started playing his cards!!

  6. So the guy claims he was assured of being adopted and because he wasnt HH has lost direction. Assuming he had been chosen it would have meant HH had direction…what nonsense!! If he is the popular one let him go ahead and stand as Independent the people will vote for him! Capt Austin Chewe did that once. MMD never picked him preference for Paul Tembo who was FTJ’s favourite. He stood as independent and won by land slide. Lets see you do that as well.

  7. I hate to say say it…… but i am doing the told you so dance right now (ala Friends). More rats jumping the sinking SS Hakaivotela Heka luxury tour boat! I think Kakoma said the reseason for the delay in announcing candidates was to avoid defections! Shit how do hope to run the country when you can’t even run a banch of *****s who agree with and idolize you. A country is a little bit more complex than running a cattle farm dude!

  8. HH isnt a politician let pf consider him for position of MD in tazara or somthing wen they take office next month

  9. Ala wait and see when we People’s Favorite (PF) take over next month na hen hen wenu yo takalanda akalapela fye umuchinshi ku ba Sata the president. Let them stand as indezzz, but PF is taking all the chairs, lol, in the Country.

  10. Basa, makani a bija ku Mazabuka where did you take all those founder members of the party? This circus must stop.

  11. we told u that UPND is lost.HH is not a leader but a manager and gud business man.People of Zambia let us vote PF.Mwamukoloooooooo.Viva Sata

  12. Stop all these talks about HH. PF if you think, all those who are standing as an independent will win, you must be dreaming. HH will win all the seats in southern province. some of these MPs, want to take their seats as personal to holders and felt by joining HH and UPND will have easier way of winning.

    • Kizito, yes HH will win seats in Southern Province, but lets not forget that Southern Province is not Zambia. Peoples Favorite (PF) will win in Lusaka, Copperbelt, Luapula and Northern. HH will get less votes than he got in 2008, because now, people know that he is a joker

  13. UPNDs strategy of waiting till the very last minute was to avoid the disgruntled jumping ship into PF and thereafter be adopted by PF. Remember, PF was expecting mass defections from MMD and UPND in order for them to get candidates who are already strong on the ground, wh o would then help PF get more presidential votes in their weak provinces. That the defections are only to the extent that the digruntled can only stand as independents is of less concern. UPND is banking on having a reasonable number of MP’s in order to have a bargaining chip for a possible coalition post elections with MMD. MMD is most likely to win the presidency but will lose more seatsh and therefore have less control of parliament. They will need an ally in UPND..

  14. ANOTHER MP DITCHES UPND

Former MP for Kalabo Central-Queen Kakoma- was not adopted and had a colorful filing in as independent. More Vote spliting. MMD might carry the day

  15. I have always advised these small brains in Choma party not to spread themselves too much trying to conquere other provinces instead of concerntrating all their energies and resources cementing and holding on to their massive share of votes in Southern Province. They are getting a bit ahead of themselves leaving their huts burning behind.
Am loving seeing this Choma cikocikala crumbling like them bloody cookies.

  16. Yes you are bitter, but remember Tongas say, never you insult where you are coming from, so that in case your bitterness goes down and feel like getting back, you will not be ashamed. In 2006 Edigar Sing’ombe was not adopted by UPND as Dundumwezi member of parliament, but he never complained and stood as independent to which he won the seat, he also campaigned for HH despite being left out . Now the guy has been adopted on UPND ticket in the same constituency. If you are popular stand as independent, but never you insult anybody. Edigar new that UPND needed to gain confidence in him before adopting him in futrue. Those who were not adopted should remember that some members like Mwimbu have helped a lot in the party in terms of legal services, hence leaving them can be blow.

  17. People who mean well for the party never insult even when they are not adopted, but those standing on two legs, or rather those who join politics to make ends meet will always blame others. There are so many areas where a person can work and contribute to the party, not only as an MP. Certain MMD members have never been MPs but are 100% royal to the party, such as Mr kachingwe.

  18. What is obtaining in UPND reinforces my earlier analysis which received heavy criticism from die hard UPND carders on this forum. Time will tell and you will remember my timely analysis. I have nothing against UPND and its leader. I am merely pointing out the possible outcome and shortcomings. I have equally criticized PF for taking too much of its time with court cases. Such actions are a reflection of  “crying babies.” PF likes so much public attention even on matters that are straightforward. While I respect their decision to seek RB’s parentage in the courts of law, the timing was very awkward and politically misplaced. Sakwiba Sikota who is an experienced constitutional lawyer will agree with me that PF acted childishly.

  19. Bona Mundia! This is the worst from UPND. More is coming in term of resigning. VIVA MWAMUKOLO. UPND will lose bigtime. More seats will be won by PF. Watch the space.

  20. Thats why we need a fresh start as a country .We need people who have a heart for the people not for money .All these who have left after being left out were never genuine members of the party .They were just interested in 400m gratuity .UPND Vice President Kapita has not been adopted but has not left .He and others have given space to young candidates to represent the party .Politics is not all about being MP.Politics is about service to others .I believe UPND will still do well in Lusaka,Coperbelt rural,Western ,Southern,Central and North Western provinces .Anything is possible in this election .

    • You are allowed to dream mate, tonga tribal party has the right to keep dreaming, but we shall not allow HH  in plot 1, not in this life time mate

  21. This year’s elections are so exiciting becoz there will be alot of surprises after September. Zambians surely we should have tried a young man for once to see how young men can rule and see their ideas.Personally Iam just tired of seeing the same faces for the past 15years.Actually it is the same faces since independece. Are we saying there are no othr pipo sure, Zambians lets love our country. There is still alot of poverty in Zambia and I feel so sad. Some thing is wrong somewhere. We mst ask God for guidance and its only HIM tht can save us.

  22. Hakainde has always thought that he is indespensible due to a few million [rands] worth of assets that he posesses, he is wrong. He’s propensity of being arrogant and his imense imaturity will cost him. severely and will haunt him many years to come.

  23. All these problems of tribe are as a result of poverty because the cake is very small for many of us to share, hence we resort to demeaning and destroying each other for just bread and butter. No wonder I say let us have HH a man full of success to push development, and you will realise that everyone will be busy making money with little room for talking and condeming others for what they are and what God has made them to be. Wake up guys let us choose HH for development, political manipulation of Sata and Banda is the cause of all the confusion.

  24. Under 5 UPND thot their Leader is more democratic than others…..we know the nature of this musamkwa(HH). UPND is in for more chaos…..why is it that UPND & MMD are having “unprecedented defections” of members than PF?

  25. when are u going to start using primaries instead of adoptions? Foolish Zambians, that is why our man is ruling you.

    • How can anyone be proud to be Zimbabwean where Ministers and MPs from both parties are raping & infecting 15 year old girls with aids, one 56 year old MP has just made a 15 year old girl pregnant
      Please log on to newzimbabwe.com

  26. @13,wishful thinking indeed! these elections ahead of us will be total different from all these years and the voting parten is all strange,so dont compare these elections to any year you think of…. it will be historical,SATA will win with a difference of 131000 votes or more, watch for the space

  27. Number 34, can you please elaborate more on your preferred system of primaries and tell us how they can be conducted in Zambia which is not a federal country. Base your explanation on the criteria and threshold. I am sure you are taking a leaf from the American politics. The presidential primaries are currently hot in USA for the GOP for 2012 elections.

  28. Luck of people demanding forparties clearly defining their economic IDEOLOGIES they intend to persue promoteds indispline and opens Zambia tocoruption.CAPITALISTS in our economic status only serves few pockets. We have raw materials without finished products forexports hencetoevaluate the effective pricing anddfarely distribute the earnings by investing in industrialisation.

  29. UPND focus should be on 2016 not this election. For now its better they have a loose alliance with MMD and burry Pa Fyaka for good. The independent candidates are only serving to dilute Pa Fyaka chances in Southern Province. This is politics and strategy my friends chwee chwee chweee chweee-kimwa lizoho feela. RB bounces back- HH for 2016- Zambia foward

  30. These are just political non entities sponsored by MMD to cause confusion and will have zero impact on HH’s or UPND’s popularity.

  31. Politics is now heightening, elephants are at war and the grass is drying while signs of rainfall materialises. Poverty has led to many defections soon after not being adopted. In any election very few loosers go quietly and accept defeat. The story is true that alot of whether PF, MMD or UPND defectors after being left out are just fake members of those parties, or wanted to personalise the part leadership in that area. Shame, I can predict that the defections wont affect the respective part, Again, Zambia need polical cleansing, its haulted and dirty with tribalising. You can see these tribal attacks emanating from tribal political parties. We have failed to unit as a country, watch the pace….we all need to work on this issue as Zambians not as tribes

  40. Seems more like a JOKE looking at the adopted Candidates that a serious party. I know UPND has no intentions of winning but merely want to participate but I expected them to be abit more serious than this.

  41. These illiterates dont actually follow the correct procedures.HH tries to do the best by fielding credible candidates but zambia as it is is always ruled by mistakes.Every fool can take a chance and even end up in stae house just like RB,Chiluba. This is what is giving people hope even grade 4 old man Sata believes Zambians are blind enough to put him in poor in his near death years

  42. This shows democracy is not all roses.it has its own negatives and disadvantages-How on earth can we have 17 suitable candidates spending hard earned money on losing elections. It shows we are notgoig anywhere as a nation

  43. Tonga tribal party is dead, about time you admitted this fact..
    One Zambia one nation
The best trick the devil ever played was to to convience people he didn’t exist, so us to make sin more.
The best trick HH ( under5) is for ever playing is trying to convience people in southern province that only he can Serve their interests…..but alas a lot of People in southern province don’t buy his C.R.A.P
One Zambia One nation……Meaning Nafuti Nafuti

  44. Zimbabwean Born @34″
LT readers please go to new Zimbabwe.com & see for yourselves, how ministers and MPs are raping 15 year old girls, giving the children H.I.V and one old mp being remanded in custody after raping a 15 year old child making her pregnant? And about the one with a 12 day hard on after raping a 14 year old child  doctors cannot help, he is currently trying black medicine
How can any sane person praise the Zimbabwean political set up ? If your are so good why do you have so many failed refugees in this country than any African country.

  45. No part can afford to commit political bluders of such magnitude as were committed by UPND after the death of Anderson Mazoka and expect to survive the political up-heavals of the future. The party needs a complete over-haul and a new leader. HH is certainly not the man for such a task! He already has his money and can afford to retire comfortably and honourablly from politics. May his political career rest in peace!

  46. UPND where is the list of your parliamtary candidates. The nominations were last friday. Your favoured rich candidates you adopted will face a tough fight with independents who were you members. Your strategy failed as word leaked and they filed as independents. I hope they win and teach UPND a lesson. HH is a businessman and UPND need another leader to survive. Mazoka is turning in his grave disgusted at his party is doing.

  47. #61 Umuntu: “HH is a businessman…” I could not concur more. The man is a businessman and not a politician. He will serve his country better as a businessman. Let him leave politics to the politicians.

  48. UPND has adapted women in Consituencies Away from their Stronghold of Southern Province. It is very strange. UPND is sending their own ladies for slaughter. I they were serious, they should have adapted more women in Southern province to give then a bigger chance of winning Not Copperbelt.

  49. It’s very stupid of them to quit. While they have the democratic right to do so, they have just demonstrated that they’re in the party for wrong reasons. Besisdes only one candidate is required for a constituency. Why should one leave the party because you’re not adopted. Join, PF a party for frustrated Zambians with ambitions to rule at all cost. Frankly, i wish you losses…if you’re popular, then go for it and the people will decide. Remember that for most electorate, your faces won’t matter but the party symbol will…..Time wasters!!!

  51. breakings news the aspiring candidate who was not adopted on the upnd ticket in lufwanyama has resigned to join mmd citing hh has stingy, undemocratic, selfish.pompus,,useless, dull and foolish.he has believed that hh his truly an under chap who puts on 49 to 61kg daipers.

  52. These chaps Knew that they could only be elected into office under the UPND ticket. I dont understand why people get so excited when they are voted into office, is it the money they are interested in or it is about serving the people of Zambia. There is no need of being excited when most Zambians are impoverished, we only need to start celebrating after providing the services to the electorate not immediately you are declared councillor, MP or President.
