The Ministry of Energy and Water Development has signed a 650 million dollars project agreement with Lunzua Power Authority (LPA) to carry out the development of hydro-power projects in the country.

The project will involve the construction of a 93 Mega Watts Power plant at Kabwelume, a 151 Mega watts Power plant at Kundabwika and the construction of a 330 KV High voltage transmission line from the two power plants in Kasama.

Under the agreement, a 66 KV line will be constructed from Kundabwika and Kabwelume power plants to join the existing national grid at ZESCO’s Kawambwa Substation in Luapula Province.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Lusaka this morning, Energy Permanent Secretary Teddy Kasonso said the project is another milestone in government’s efforts to provide the much needed electric energy locally and in the Southern region.

Mr. Kasonso has also noted that the Kalungwishi river project is in the Northern part of the country which does not experience droughts will contribute to stabilizing the national grid.

He says the development will also unlock the potential for mining industries to be set up in the Northern parts of the country.

The project is expected to create about 1,000 employment opportunities at Construction stage.

And speaking earlier, Lunzua Power Authority chairperson Lloyd Chingambu said the project that will take 48 months to be completed is deemed to make a positive impact in Zambia’s social and economic sectors.

Professor Chingambu says the project is an initiative of Zambians adding that it is an indication that Zambians have the capacity to invest in huge projects if they are supported.

  1. This should have been done well back in the past but our leaders were dosing. This is a work up call for more developmental activities. We want to see Zambia without people who are poverty sticken in a country with uncountable resources. When is the Luena sugar starting and the Tea Estate going to be revamped. Let alone Mununshi banana Scheme and the Mansa Batteries. Awe Kwena pa Zed. We hope these are not mere promises to make us vote blindly because the power station was planned along time ago and this is just from achaive materials.

  2. Western province and North Western still use fuel power have you heard being mentioned as urgent thing to have hydro power you people from these provinces wake up let your Mps influence the Govt. if some people say you are behind you make it a big thing that you have been insulted.

  3. # 5 Openess For your information, CEC is puting up an Hydro power station in Kabompo and also, ZESCO is putting up a line from Kasempa turn off to connect the districts up to Chavuma to the national grid. It is happening baba, come back home and contribute to national development. There is more action now than ever before.

  4. Good example of Zambians waking up to take charge of their own country projects & industries. We need more Zambians to take up the challenges. For too long, Zambians have just sat there blaming & thinking the government must do things for them.

  5. We are supposed to see these developments everyday and not during pre election period. The projects are good what I hate most are the motives behind these so called politicians who are ever cunning and seeking opportunities. i am suprised that bloggers cant see this and that some of these projects may never even take off.

  6. #13 – The question you need to ask yourself is where has $650M conviniently appeared from? Is this a loan that has been debated in Parliament? or is this purely Zambian cash that has been lying idle? In the last six months I have seen developmental projects worth $6 billion and going at that rate we will commit $12 billion in the next six months without parliamentary accountability. Development is in the long term careful planning and knee jerk reactions are a recipe for disaster. RB commissioned a railway line in Chipata with a hyped ceremony but reports suggest that no train has ever used that line since. can we call that money well spent? Lets plan things the way it should be done

  7. This is another good news, but am afraid we still have arm chair critics who by nature can only criticize. When you ask them “what would they have done?” they say we can’t tell you because you will steal our idea. This is what comes from primary school pupils who wants to hide the 1+ 1 answer from his colleague. If our friends who are forever criticizing can acknowledge some obvious good work they will stop being irrelevant.

  8. # 14 Amayama GRZ is developing this project through PPP. Private company has sourced the USD 650 million. Get your facts right! It is a medium term project, it will take about 5 years and it can’t be a campaign issue.
