Irate electorate burns Kitwe’s Nakadoli market

Police in Kitwe in full riot gear fought running battles with residents of the city who trooped to the city center to protest against the move by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ ) to seek court injunction restraining media houses from announcing the September 20 tripartite elections results.

ZANIS reports from Kitwe that the protests started from Wusakili township this morning at around 08:00 hours. By press time the protests have spread to Chimwemwe and Chamboli township.

The Town center and Chisokone market have not been spared in the fracas causing most shops to close down prematurely. Many of the unsuspecting shoppers were forced to return home for safety.

Efforts to get Provincial Police Command for a comment on the matter failed by press time.

Meanwhile, Old Nakadoli market in Chimwemwe Township has been gutted by unknown people for unexplained reasons.

Police sources found at the scene and marketers , alike, could not out rightly say the reasons for the gutting of the market nor connect it to the protests.

By press time, the police district command had ordered its officers to comb the affected areas to maintain peace.

Several vehicles on the Ndola- Kitwe dual carriage way have been damaged by the stone throwing protestors.

  11. Umm, we need more, bigger and better organised protests than this… we need something that’s going to shake them a little and garner international coverage. All this delay is being orchestrated to test the ‘water’ and gauge the mood of people to see how they would react. They are hoping ‘docile’ Zambians after all the whigeing and complaining in their own houses they will retreat in their slumber and tomorrow will be business as usual. How about you head for the mines and all businesses run by foreigners and burn a few of them… this will rouse their attention a little and start paying attention and eventually stir them to action.

    The ECZ throw its inefficiency has allowed the situation to degenerate into what we are now witnessing.
    We will hold all those that are responsible for this to account.

One thing I wish it has was A/C seats, but it doesn’t matter. Great buy and I do give 2 thumbs up to Ford for making the Edge. You can make an argument that not paying a debt is a dishonorable thing and in many cases I would agree that you are right. However, wouldn’t you also consider it dishonorable for some company to buy a bunch of debt for $.02 on the dollar and then start calling people demanding payment when they have no real proof these people actually owe anything?

    Zambia’s Sata holds lead as vote count progresses

    LUSAKA, Sept 22 (Reuters) – Zambian opposition leader Michael Sata was holding on to his lead over incumbent Rupiah Banda as counting moved beyond a halfway point in the race to become the next president of Africa’s biggest copper producer, the Election Commission said.

    According to the latest tally read out at the Commission’s headquarters, Sata had 639,787 votes compared with 542,362 for Banda. The figures were based on results from 85 of the country’s 150 constituencies. (Reporting by Chris Mfula; Editing by Ed Cropley)

  36. Ba mmd mulimbe bamambala-in the first 33 count by ecz the difference between Sata and RB was 72,877. (MC:265843-RB:192,966). And now, the latest with 85 constiences counted, the difference is 97,425 votes (MC:639,787-RB:542,362). As can be seen, MC is actually improving.Anyway lets wait and see………………….

I racked up a bunch of debt in college and didn’t settle but paid it back in full. I actually went hungry and set the thermostat lower than I would have liked in order to do so. I know some deadbeats that settled for less than what they owed but not me!But I’m the kind of guy who paid for my own college, even thought a family member offered to pay it. Sadly, I don’t think there are many people like that.

  39. I’m skeptical about these numbers and where they are headed. 85 out of 150 is more than half of the constituencies (~ 57%) but the vote count is still around ~ 600k for the highest. Now we were told we had 5million registered voters. Assunming 60% turn out (that should be around 3k votes). I mean where are the rest of the votes? I know the rest of the candidates are sharing around 1% spoils, may be with HH sitting at around 16%. And the votes counted so far are urban ones where there should be many more number of voters registered. Now don’t tell me the remaining 65 constituencies hold the rest of the votes and thus when they start trickling in Sata will be overtaken… note that I’m neither PF nor MMD, but an interested citizen sick of status-quo with the future of the country at stake

Let’s work on the constitution; it only pains the tax payer to see what is happening in Zambia today.   69. #39 Jigga, you are very right. I am also skeptical about the numbers. As you have pointed out the number for 65 constituencies should be lower than that of 85 constituencies. The ECZ is likely to come up with a lie that there were more voters in the 65 constituencies than in the 85. Fair play please.
