President Michael Sata has increased the Chief’s subsidies. The President has reviewed upwards, the Chief’s subsidies as per campaign promise. This is according to a press statement released by his special assistance for press, Mr George Chellah.
President Sata stressed the need for the country to respect tradition and culture by ensuring that traditional leaders live in a dignified and respectful manner.
“A nation without regard for its traditions and customs is a lost one. Therefore, as a government, we have seen it prudent and obligatory that we safeguard the interests of our traditional leadership,” the President said.
“It has always disturbed me to see our well-regarded Royal Highnesses subjected to all sorts of abuse, ridicule and contempt due to the poor circumstances under which we have allowed this noble and decorous institution to function.”
The President said that traditional leaders were an essential component in the governance system hence his administration is resolute to ensure that this institution is preserved and looked with pride and honour.

I am going to be come a chief! Chief MB of Kaponya Kingdom!
Why oh why does State House always release these statements why can’t the respective ministries release this news, this special assistance for press must be a very busy chap!!
You are very right – This statement should have released by the appropriate minister who deals with traditional leaders to demonstrate decentralised decision making
more more money in their pockets)))))))anyway this is good for the chiefs.pliz bloggers tell me,are these chiefs going to pay tax out of this money?do they even pay tax?
I don’t think you can tax a subsidy… in my opinion though!!
Its more money in your pockets kekekekekekekeke.living up to campaign promises lol
D MMD shud b ashamed of der bloody-selves.hw on earth wer dey payn our chiefs such smo salaries..& then u wonda wat’s wrong wit som chiefs lik Chitimukulu;y n hell wer dey campaignin 4 d MMD??..I jst hop dat dey wil oso b payn tax,tho..
Cheap politicking from Sata PF creating an impression that our traditional leaders have not been looked after by previous govts. Sata was once minister of local govnt and he did nothing and this move wont add up. What informs him that the level of allowances he has pegged on chiefs is appropriate and adquate? He doesn’t just get it.
The move is good and you need to appreciate that, by the way the last increase in chief’s subsidies was done when MLGH was under Sata.
Increasing allowamces before the budget is debated?? interesting. which basket is the money coming from?
A very gud observation
what is “chief susidy” kanshi? is it monthly allowance/salary or what? And do we really need these chiefs? what role(s) do they play in this morden society of ours?
Mr Sata seems to hav misplaced his priorities, the major problem we hav in zambia is the majority of unemployed youths in our streets. And making (good-for nothing) chiefs richer does not solve this problem, obviously! make jobs for the youths and they will take care of their parents (including your lazy chiefs)! ine cilankalipa ifya so!!
Listen doing this will help win next election.
I know that Chitimukulu has been a supporter of MMD in the past but I hope that he gets a higher allowance than all the other paramount chiefs seeing that he is the leader of the owners of the country. If it was up to me, I would get rid of all the other chiefs and make the Bemba royal family the royal family for the whole of the country. I am sure that if Sata wins a second term, that is what he will do.
Du pratar dumheter. Vi gillar Bembafolk. Var inte en skitstövel.
This is a good strategic move by Sata and sadly long overdue given that chiefs were fed hand-outs by chi RB and especially in MMD and HH strongholds, the proof will surely be in the next by-election kekeke 200% increment!!
What the funk do we need chiefs for?Apart from bewitching each other and clinging on to power through their blood line like ntata pa imwbwa….

I am sick and tired of receiving pathetic and nonsensical texts from my aunt in Ndola asking for my money,Probably, because her texts lack capitalization and/or punctuation, are very difficult to read, or looked like they were typed by an 8-year old.
As though that were not enough, I wonder if she and a lot of people here consult the following (incomplete) list of unacceptable nuisance words:
1. *coz
2. * u
3. * ur
4. * lol
5. * lyke
6. * plz
7. * m8
8. * thx
9. * sry
10. * sxy
11. * imo
12. * btw
13. * tho Thanks
14.* k
nothing sinister on these. May I simplify afew > k = can, btw = between, m8 = might, u = you, ur = your, thx= thank you, thanks, plz= please.. take it easy they help you brain exercise as you might have left Zed long ago hence left behind on the changing back there… b4 = before :)

Why should tax payers pay people for doing nothing? The powers of President should be checked. There is no way one person can just work up and misdirect tax payers money. Parliament must sanction who benefits from peoples money. Chiefs should be engaged in productive ventures and earn their money. That is the only way dignity will be restored to the chiefdom. Respect is earned! Chiefs should not be seen as hero worshipping politicians for their survival.
Ha,with Her Majesty’s relevance questioned more and more each year, the UK’s budget crunch forcing the Queen to do every little cutback to not appear a burden on UK taxpayers, here comes a much poorer zed with increases in allowances for chiefs.Even other african countries have no place for traditional chiefs and the few that do its all off their subjects not from national coffers.
#7 you are wrong. that was called Chiluba administartion and there there is mwanawasa and Ruphia admin. This is called Sata Lead adminstration. You cant just work as a minister and start anouncing increaments without the HE. What Sata will do is what He dreant Zambia to be.
these chiefs should be made to work for their money, development must be seen, they should also keep registry of their chiefdom, it is pathetic that people being born or dying in villages have no birth/death certificates, it must be a responsibility of these chiefs to give birth notices for parents to take to their bomas for issuance of birth certificates, population census is so poor no wonder politicians take advantage, all of a sudden Ndola became more populus than kitwe when LPM was in office, and eastern province grew over 3 years!
This Press Release is inadequate. It does not explain whether the subsidies are monthly allowances or annual allowances. Can someone who knows kindly enlighten the bloggers. Meanwhile, how much will the Litunga get after the Barotse Agreement comes into effect?
Instead of waiting for election time to bribe them, the gov has taken the strategy of bribing them in perpetuity, hoping they would in turn reciprocate by influencing their subjects during election time. If the Lazy, unproductive chiefs can receive such exponential increments, it will be interesting to se how much the gov comes up with as the minimum wage for the productive labor force
Give 300% increament to all miners because they voted for you PF. You can not give such bog increament to chiefs who are un productive and leave somebody who is always underground producing to feed the whale country. Shi maini feeds ba chicha, kabu diraiva, ba docota, tu nashi, shi mafamo, ba muntu, shi mabekari, bonse aba they look to shi maini. Shilya ishi fuma mwi libwe. Give him 300% or else 2016 PF will be voted out, mwilatu settinga ba politician twalibomba sana ba shi maini.
Sata should also look into the plight of teachers and nurses. Its a shame for this country to pay a teacher, who spent four years at the university, less than $400.00 when accommodation itself is more than that. During Kaunda time, teachers, nurses were and doctors where the most respected workers in the country. That had also contributed to the good service delivery. The standard of education has drastically come to nothing in the public sector because teacher spend more time worrying of how what they are going to eat and how they are going to pay rentals. Even the issue leakage during exams has become part of their survival instincts. Pliz lets bring back the dignity that these civil servants had by taking care of them.

I detest watching urgly people who think they are pretty and for one, Prof. Nkandu Luo I find higly neauseating. The way she likes dreasing up scantly in outfits so tightly glued to her body always induces such revulsionin my stomach, but then, she’s a true living example of the adage that “if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is ugliness. How Dr Manda could for years poke such a monstrocity of urgliness still deeply vexes me.
Iam coming back to take my thrown as chief, iam chief Mwanjawanthu of the nsenga people in petauke now in the states and my mother is acting chief, now that SATA has increased the salaries iam coming soon. Thanks
Mushota, those are normal abbreviations when texting messages especially if one is using an old phone like your untie’s. Buy her a samusang galaxy ace or Iphone 4S and the nonsense will stop. I can make sense of the abbreviations…
This is good move by GRZ (Sata)..I just also think this allowances must be the baseline. Besides, Chiefs must be the primary beneficiaries of mine and other natural resources royalties..if we go this way, Chief Nkana on CB and Chikupili of Mkushi copper mines could generate enough income for develpmental projects for their communities…
it always beat me but what does ‘lol’ stand for in txt abbreviation?
Lots of love
It’s a shame token our chiefs received all this while. Well done PF for realising the power of tradition in our country. Am greatly puzzled for disgrace and shame given to our chiefs with such a small amount of money!!!!
WELL DONE , MR PRESIDENT, SIR!
imwe bafikala, i asked a question. what does ‘Lol’ in txt abbreviation stand for?
Lots of love. that is what the letters stand for.
so who is paying who? is it the government? is it the citizens through the tax payers money? I think we the citizens are paying the chiefs and have increased their salaries. Still chiefs are in villages where people do not pay tax as compared to people who stay in towns. So why should I be forced to pay the chiefs whom I do not know what they are doing. Before the government thought of increasing the salary of the chiefs they could have first embarked on sensitising people on the role of the chiefs in this modern society. Otherwise the young generation who are employed do not know their role.
@19 HH SUCKER, Read comments by bloggers on this article to educate and elucidate your inteligence, Sata PF doesn’t just get it. If he was tidy and smart he could have influenced the president then and increased chief’s allowances. What ever is said Sata is as usual politiking, pandering to the public. He who seeks justice and publicity must do the right thing with equity.
Fellow zambians, certain things should not be critisized just for the sake of that.Even if one is your enemy and does something good, let us learn to appreciate.Am not saying so becoz I belong to a royal family but becoz Our traditional Leaders just deserve that.Thumbs up for PF Gvt.This is really working.God Bless our President.
Pepole don’t be fooled this is not the real Mushota we know on this blog. Just wait for the real Mushota to make his/her comments. I am equally waiting. Thanks! I end here!
I wonder if this is part of the 2012 budget. I end here!
Can someone please help me understand why they should be paid what work do they do apart from sitting on that chair the whole day.
The headline speaks 4 itself. Its Sata who hs increased the money 4 the chiefs. Its not a goverment decision. I see nothing wrong with increasing money 4 the chiefs. But when ths decision is made by one man, whoz desire is to gain more popularity, its a wrong decision. The budget hsnt bn aprovd yet.
Well we also need their role to be well defined
@ngombala muhapi wa maqwereqwere – please do not detest God’s creation. Prof. Nkandu Luo has the right to look good because she is God’s creation. What makes you see your mother or sister beautiful you Imbecile? Learn to respect people and stick to the topic *****! If you can’t stomach her looks, then do not look at her at all. You can’t believe it is the PF ruling, some of you used to say that SATA will never rule this country.
Ya ya ya yapasa abena Mpezeni.More castle kwisano.
Chiefs should now be independent and not to be used as puppets by selfish politicians. The increase in the chiefs’ subsidies is welcome. But those chiefs who were corrupted by MMD to fire salvo at Sata during campaigns should be ashamed. Notable among these were Mwata Kazembe, Chief Mushota, chief Mwanachingwala, chief Mukuni of Kazungula, paramount chitimukulu, chiefs of Mbala and Mpulungu who were paraded before TV cameras to renounce Sata, chief Mumpolokoso and many others whom MMD managed to bribe. Number 45, please pass on these assertions to the law enforcement officers about Nevers Mumba and Co. These are very serious.
#45 thanks for the inside infor…# 46 every mission has shushu and so Sata has all the infor… Nevers is scheduled to have a talk with Police on arrival…watch the space
Are you telling me you critics don’t know the role of our Chiefs in the Country nangu mungulu fye, whom do you think provide leadership to those grand parents you have neglected in your villages,The problem is that a lot of you cant even tress your roots no wonder why you can think Chiefs do nothing in this Country Sorry.
The chiefs in Zambia are just parasits – what do they contribute to the country? Chief Mpezeni is busy abusing young girls in Eastern province – giving him money for what?
shafula ishakushita ubwanga bane. Thanks Mr President abekala calo batusheko ukusoka amataba.
With the precedent set, people are waiting to see if the same gesture will be extended to the productive workforce
Oh pliz mr.president.this decision could precipitate unprecedented industrial unrest in the civil service.truth be told, chiefs do absolutely nothing.its only normal that civil servants earn more than chiefs bcoz the former work and the source of the emoluments the same treasury.i rest my case.
Oh Oh ! Chrismas is early for them
Well i think it is prudent to note that chiefdoms form zambia and had it not been for them there would be no zambia. They first formed their ifyalo by fighting their enemies and later were combined as one zambia one nation. It is these chiefs that we have a true identity of a real zambian. Lets respect the chiefs plz
@ 54, Oswell nsala.Throughout history, People have been paying chiefs through their harvest, manual labor etc.Correction- during migration and chiefdom establishments, subjects fought and shed blood. The world is changing and for how long do you expect chiefs to continue living on hand outs to the extent that they get such unjustified increases at the expenses of hard working Zambians? Let them innovate and earn their money by becoming entrepreneurs (can succeed with their subjects being a ready market); farmers (being custodians of massive traditional land and domesticating animals), etc. Freebies encourage laziness
Does this share include those chiefs who were paraded by the MMD goverment to declare their support for Rupiah on ZNBC.
Hope this is a genuine increment and that sata wont ask for favors in-return. the increment is just too much 300% he should have introduced things like allowances other than making that kind of adjustment. Sooner than later some chaps will demand increments using this as a reference. 300% increment
cmon pipo these chiefs play an important role in our African culture, sad we don’t understand because most of us have never been to our respective villages. Saying they do nothing therefore should not get a dime of our hard earned money (Tax payers) is like saying a former president shouldn’t get paid, because they too literally do nothing after office except for a few public appearances here and there.
Whats bad is that former presidents get so much regardless of how pathetic their rule was, i think chiefs should get paid for the work they perform in our villages, besides the highest is already less than K 5m, much less than most of the people commenting on this article, Former Presidents on the other hand???? am not so sure
best move mr president
This is too high, they should hv considered a K1,000,000 increament per annual. plus no free fueling
Come to think of it, how many paramount chiefs, senior chiefs, chiefs, and chief retainers do we have in Zambia times at least K1.4 million per motnth? Is this money budgeted for? Is this some form of UBs=unemployed benefits or social security for chiefs? At the expense of real development? Jokers…………….
Thanks a lot for sharing this with all people you actually realize what you’re talking approximately! Bookmarked. Please also talk over with my web site =). We can have a hyperlink exchange agreement between us
