Prolonged dry spell worries Government

THE Government will institute a crop assessment exercise in view of the prolonged dry spell in some parts of the country, Vice-President Guy Scott has said.

Dr Scott, who inspected some maize fields in Chongwe yesterday, said the Government would establish if there would be any deficit after the assessment.

He said the exercise would be done by his office, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU).

Dr Scott, however, assured that the country had enough maize stocks from the previous farming seasons for consumption even if this year’s crop failed.

He observed that there were some parts of the country where the crop was not doing well.

The vice-president also said he was not happy with the performance of the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

He said some of the maize had not been stored properly.

Agriculture Minister, Emmanuel Chenda said technical experts would be dispatched next week to carry out an assessment.

And Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo said the Government should consider suspending maize exports in view of the dry spells being experienced in some parts of the country.

    • It is Mwanawasa’s invention that RB inherited. RB was just completing Mwanawasa’s term and since he abandoned the fight against corruption, RB failed to secure his own mandate. Any good thing he did can be attributed to Levy’s policies and initiatives. Even what Michael is being recommended-for such as the appointments of credible people in key legal institutions is, equally, Mwanawasa’s legacy.

  1. Why cant we conduct a commissioner of inquiry too even on this case? we wil summon God and the angells to explain! lol! u r in deep shit ba Pf, wen RB took ofice, there was a more economic stability threatening crisis, it was the global recession, he managed to get Zambia out of recession! so even u ba Pf, u shud manage to get Zambia out of drought!
The prblem is that u r spending 2 much on COIs thts y u cant manage to mantain food security!

  2. this is so intresting, i saw the ugly bitch Masebo escorting this muzugu VP,

    • The editors’ please make it a point that your site is not a forum for trading insults and any antisocial comments. how can you allow someone to use you site with those words @vox populi #2. delee such without fail coz you cant call your wife or mother such derogatory terms .

  3. “Dr Scott, however, assured that the country had enough maize stocks from the previous farming seasons for consumption even if this year’s crop failed”. So finally PF admits that RB is a hero and NOT a villain after all? To see Sylvia Masebo, Emmanuel Chenda and Guy Scott swallow their pride tail between legs is bemusing, made my day!

  4. How can there be enough maize when PF’s first Agriculture sector ‘action’ was to order the FRA to export 1m tonnes of maize?. Lol; welcome to Governance 101! You thought it was all about COIs and fighting only ‘previous’ corruption of the past govts! I think the Gods are punishing you. Better change your ways!

  5. Greetings to all in the name of Jesus. Prophet TB Joshua prophecied about the drought. We pray that we will reserve our maize at FRA.

    • What a silly statement. Profit-making Tubercolosis Joshua is over-rated. And some of us are not christians, so when we debate we want to deal with the issue at hand, so you can hold on to your superstitions but do not rub them in our faces.

  6. God hates PF he voted MMD. So first it’s drought next it’s locusts.
Serves Zambia right for voting for Satanists and ignorant corrupt and power hungry members of society.

  7. Please leave God out of your petty political squabbles He is above all this. God does not depend on politicians to do His will. He says if my people which are called by my name will humble themselves and seek my face AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS the will I hear from heaven, I will forgive their sin and heal their land.

  8. Some zambians are very stupid indeed, like @sharp shooter,do you mean to tell us that when zambia had good rainful the previous farming season it was because of RB’s policies?some are saying that God hates the PF,really that country cant develop were people even politicise nature, some times i wonder,if people who are educated can write such trash ,how about the uneducated? Its like some of you have never gotten off the shock that PF won the elections, mazafa agalu imwe nachifukushi..!!! REALLY DIGUSTING MATHER FACKERS..!!

  9. You MMD imbeciles should resign yourselves to gleaning silly misperceptions of events to  ‘make your days’ Yeah that’s as near as you will get to the satisfaction of ruling the country. Chizamibaba Chizamibaba as Masebo and the PF are spotted by the limelight while your leaders rot in jail

  10. Zambian abroad – we were to sophisticated to land in jail. Just that dick head Liato got caught. But to spite you none of us will be touched. Keep wishing you excretion of a fish smelling c u n t.

Am Back go back to your sisters s h I t hole where you belong and don’t insult your masters in MMD as very soon we will hunt you down

  11. when elijah prayed there was no rain for 3 years.it will not rain until restoration off BA64.Do u knowthat it never rained until our men were released in mumbwa.the skies will be dry?.do u know the only guy who wears the white baret, barotse custodian of royal lands, that is his job mwana.she can send the very rains to sweep you off the feet.

  12. So PF Agric success depends on the rain… If it rains, PF GRZ will declare bumper harvest due to ‘good’ agric policies. Now that we have a ‘drought’, a commission enqury has to be constituted so we know who to blame. PF GRZ never a dull comment.

  13. more dry spell to come until BA64 is restored.you remember that mumbwa had the dry spell until barotse detainees were released.

  14. PF is confusing alot of things, endless commissioner of inquiry, harrassing of MMD leaders who produced a continuous bapper harvests, the move which seems to exposes Pf of been not appreciative, the intention of removing Zambia as a Christian Nation clause from the constitution and many more could be the cause of all this………. So i cant see any reason why this Briton is wandering.

  15. #14 Am back
Read this:”Dr Scott, however, assured that the country had enough maize stocks from the previous farming seasons for consumption even if this year’s crop failed.”

Imagine if RB had no visionary or rather good deliberate agricultural policies (cos the word visionary seems to rankle you) what would have happened with the impending crop failure in our country.PF seems to be envious of all the good things RB did and they are at pains accepting them.I do respect Alexander Chikwanda who openly acknowledged.I don’t share your philosophy of insulting other people cos it was not part of my childhood.Stay well in Russia and enjoy your New Year and hope this time you will get your BC on time.

  16. Am Back. you must be slaving yourself screwing a Russian woman so you can remain under her visa. So you are having sex by instructions. You jigoloo. No wonder you are so frustrated. Don’t worry I’ll comfort the girls in your family with my Tonga spear but I will skip your mother till she shaves.

  17. Drought wouldn’t be a worrisome if there were $1.4 billion in mining taxes and dividends available for irrigation projects.

For instance the many rivers could be used to store water for irrigation, either underground in aquifers, or with small dams and ponds.

That would generate more jobs than there are in the entire mining industry.

  18. Pliz don’t insult. Make it your new year resolution. If you are REALLY UPSET/ANGRY, before you blog write a draft in word and ask a 12 year old or your parent to read it out to you. If you can honestly let a 12 year old/ parent read those insults then you need your head to be examined. Don’t subject us to your sick heads, we read these blogs to get info and have a constructive discussion. Pliz don’t deny us that beautiful chance. Be different in 2012!:x

  19. I hope we dont get the yellow maize as was the case nearly 20 years ago when MMD came to power. It seems this drought has a return period of twenty years which coincides with change of government.
