PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Lusaka youths have called on the Lusaka City Council (LCC) to employ young people in bus stations.
Recently, LCC revealed that it is now collecting K600 million per month from Intercity Bus Terminus after MMD cadres, who were allegedly interfering in operations of the station, vacated the premises.
PF Lusaka Province youth chairman Kennedy Kamba said the council is now operating freely in bus stations because PF youths have heeded the directive by party secretary general Wynter Kabimba for them not to interfere in such operations.
“My concern is that not long ago, the council did not manage to collect this huge amount of money. But with the coming of PF into government, the council is managing to collect this money.
“Therefore, I am urging the Lusaka City Council to consider employing the same youths who are helping to control the situation in different bus stations. These youths have contributed to creating sanity at bus stations, which the commuters are appreciating,” Mr Kamba said.
He said the local authority should reward the youths for their efforts by employing them.
Meanwhile, Mr Kamba has appealed to Minister of Lands, Energy and Water Development Christopher Yaluma to give back the agency of issuing offer letters for land to LCC.
The local authority’s land agency was revoked by then Minister of Lands Gladys Nyirongo following controversies over land allocation in the city.
But in a dramatic turn of events, Reverend Nyirongo, who spoke tough on corruption in land allocation, was later jailed for abusing her authority of office.
Mr Kamba said giving back the agency to LCC will help reduce land wrangles in Lusaka.
“The move will bring about transparency and accuracy and will help curb corruption in the allocation of land in the city,” he said.
And Mr Kamba has joined calls for the lifting of former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity from prosecution so that he can clear his name over several corruption allegations.
He advised former leaders who served in the MMD government not to cry foul over the PF government’s stance on corruption.
Mr Kamba said the PF government’s intention is to ensure stolen public resources are given back to the people.

I thought PF had rid Party Cadres from from Embassies and Ministries to stop political interference? Is Zambia making one step forward and ten steps back? If that has been the turnover you mean you cannot construct a modern terminus.
Intercity is a wrong word for that structure and its facilities.
Get a loan against that and build something modern . The contrast is even worse now with the coming up of levy park. Imagine a tourist jumping off from “intercity” and shopping from levy park.

Matter of fact even the Central Police station must be revamped to add uniformity and structure to what Levy Junction has introduced. I vaguely remember reading something about the InterCity being revamped. I wonder when that will be – hopefully not in the last year of the first term of PF!
This is why those who are saying the PF is wrong on spending too much time on corruption.are completely wrong. Imagine what this money could do to the development of the city if this money does not go corruptly into people’s pockets.

I support that call. Infact the youths will be very good at revenue collection and keeping sanity at the terminus. Employ them also to sweep roads instead of outsourcing that function.
That money will still end in the pockets of individuals at higher level.

Remember that there are people on the street who are trained revenue collectors, accountants, etc. Why should people without qualifications get council jobs when we have plenty of educated Zambians without jobs? Those who are not well educated or skilled should do something for themselves or go to farms to look for manual labour. Better still, simply go back to the land as KK planned it.
