The articles in the Post and Zambia Daily Mail on 28 January concerning Zamtel did not accurately reflect the British High Commission’s position on the issue.
The British High Commission fully supports the efforts to tackle corruption in Zambia. Corruption is not only wrong in itself; it also impedes economic development. DFID is working with the Zambian Government in the fight against corruption.
It is important that any action, including the reversal of the sale of Zamtel, be carried out according to the law, and that this be seen to be the case.
Furthermore, it is in the interests of Zambia that the government acts in such a way as to ensure the continued confidence of investors in the country. The statement of David Pearce, Deputy High Commissioner, on 27 January was in line with the above.
The British High Commission has not said anything further about the reversal of the sale of Zamtel and does not, at this point at least, intend to do so.

@Mwanawakwitu: it’s not that the British are the first to comment nor is it about being our colonial masters but that the embassy feels to clarify fabricated statements attributed to them. The Canadians or the Russians would have done the same if the Post and Daily Mail were using their name to score points in justifying the wrongful acts of the PF Govt. The Govt should have followed due process in reversing the sale of Zamtel and the fact that they failed to do so, will ultimately cost Zambia dearly.

Hon. Sebastian Zulu is a lawyer and by appointing him as Minister of Justice, the President must have applied his mind on his suitability to administer the justice portfolio. As rational citizens we are entitled to know what precisely the state of mind of Mr Sata is. Great Britain has had the rule of law for the last 800 years so the High commissioner should have made his case a little stronger. The high commissioner should have categorically stated that successful countries like Great Britain are not manufactured rather they are a consequence of good ideas and that bad ideas such as expropriation will undermine Zambia’s future. DFID should go further and withhold aid to this despotic regime, otherwise this Sata criminality will go further to destroy the little Zambia has achieved.

I do not mind how the ‘mad’ PF govt go about giving back to zambia what belongs to them, who did R & B in to commit the barbaric act of selling off our property to foreigners? I do not understand this lack of confidence of many Zambians, why do u v to wait for the so called ‘colonial’ masters to decide for u? We r a sovereign nation and we do not v to depend on them to correct a corrupt act; it does not mind which party is in power. Did they not force us into colonialism?
