Elias Mpondela resigns from his National Housing Authority position

National Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer, Elias Mpondela has resigned. National Housing Authority Chairman Mundia Muya announced that Mr Mpondela has left the institution to pursue other interests. Dr Muya said this in a statement issued to ZNBC news in Lusaka.

He said that although National Housing Authority regretted Mr Mponde’s resignation, the board appreciated the valuable contribution that he rendered to the institution.

Mr Mpondela was appointed Chief Executive Officer of National Housing Authority in August 2009.

Last month, workers at National Housing Authority (NHA) in Lusaka downed tools demanding, among other things, the dissolution of the board and removal of top management officials for allegedly “bringing problems” to the organisation.

According to NHA union branch chairperson, Oscar Mwananyanda, the main cause of the work-stoppage was to push management to pay the workers their commutation of leave days. This was to enable them attend to some of their children’s school requirements as the current education allowance was inadequate.

The workers were demanding that Mr Mpondela, human resources manager and director of finance, among other senior staff, be investigated for allegedly “bringing problems at the organisation”.

Mr Mwananyanda cited, among other problems, the alleged unnecessary trips abroad by senior management staff using company funds.

Their other complaint was that employees were being denied salary advances when faced with problems.The workers accused management of non-remittance of Pay-As-You-Earn to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) as well as contributions to the National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA) even after making deductions from workers salaries.

  1. The man has just chickened out because he new his job is on the line. Long over due to be fired. Anyway your misdeeds will be exposed even if you have left.

  2. I have no issues with someone who decides to resign his position, just as I would have no issues if the reason is that Mr Mpondela has not run the organisation well. But this: Denied commutation of leave days? Denied salary advances when faced with problems? as reasons for work stoppage pisses me off. If the union thinks that NHA is a cash cow to be milked every January for school fees then we can forget about the real mandate of NHA. Workers should learn the discipline of saving even from their “meagre” pay for personal expenses, otherwise employees will milk themselves out of employment if NHA collapses. These are the things that lead to privatisation like Zamtel.

  3. His entire management should resign including the financial manager. He knew the PF is coming for him, better to escape but too late will follow you, whereever, you will be to explain
    certain things.

  5. Please Ba SATA, put these people at NHA on hourly-wage so that when they decide to stop-working because of no salary advances, they will be losing their pay by the number of hours they have this work-stoppage. NONSENSE.
    As for Mpondela, investigate, him, let him explain where he found those UNMARKED ballot papers he was caught with in katondo st. during the 2006 elections. We have not forgotten

  9. YOU DONT STOP WORK to push management to pay commutation of leave days and salary advances. You go on leave annually so that you rest and perform better . It is called an advance because the norm is to get it after you have worked.
    These are just economic indicators of what is happening at nha on the ground whether you remove mpodela or not.
    I hear nha is even failing to build prepaid houses.
    Replace mpondela and see what changes

  11. What? workers downing tools because no salary advance. NHA is not financial institution or microfinance co. Such funds are available form microfinance companies guys…get a life. Pondela u should not have resigned, U should have fired these *****s.

  13. Good riddance of bad rubbish! This chap was a corrupt and sleazy for whom the anti corruption axe kept missing and we wondered why. Did he come from the previledged tribe or was it because he has been bonking someone well connected? No sacred cow in the fight against corruption? My foot!! If the powers that be are serious, they must move in to investigate what this chap has been up to at NHA.

  14. It’s long over due this chap has not made any progress with regard to NHA. He just uses these institutions for his own gain! Look @ how he messed up Phonix Contractors! ZAAA issue is another thing which he needs to let go!

  15. Mpondela messes where ever he goes . Union Bank , Zambia National Clearing and Foprwarding , Mutende , Briefly Commerce Bank and Avolone Motors , Duly Motor, Pheonix , ZAAA and NHA . Election issues in Katondo St. I can keep on and on . meesed man . Probe the guy.

Mpondela thanx for heading our calls to resign and we a waiting for your bootlickers to follows suit.coming to the issue at hand is the man is monouvering to go with the vehicle he has been using but that should not be the case,he has not used the vehicle for more than 3yrs to warrant him buy the car,and interms of hand over,hw do u allow some one who has resigned to be alone in the office as in handing over?He can destroy vital info for his wrong doings ,and this has been our concern as workers and the Chief Human resources and administration manager is buys defending Mpondela that we workers should not meddle in these affairs,but one thing that this Mrs TJ Mulenga should undastand is that,the vehicle was bought using tax payers money.,More than K460,000,000.00 was spent on that in 2010
