The Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has observed that Zambia may not meet the domestic demand in terms of food crops.

JCTR Director Leonard Chiti said this trend will be attributed to inadequate rainfall that the country has experienced this farming season.

Speaking in an interview with Qfm, Father Chiti says the current inadequacy of rains will greatly affect the bumper harvest which the country has been recording so far which will also affect food security.

He says the trend calls on government to put in place measures that will ensure that irrigation practices are encouraged as an alternative in drought conditions.

The JCTR Director has also called on government to improve storage facilities across the country to avoid crops going to waste

  1. Great words Jesuit Barley, as we give thanks to Jesus for the Chipolopolo win, I am even smarter. Get the money from Liatos underground farm vault, buy irrigation pipes; sell the bicycles at musokotwanes farm and package the soya and other grains like Joseph did in Egypt. Get rice from Chama and from my cousins Kusilozi western province. Have Chin give us machinery for they too are now Chipolopolo. Build green houses in Avondale and kwachazanga. Do I need to be agricultural minister please :) don’t forget to pray repent and give thanks to Jesus.

    • You must be a city dweller. well its time for you to work up and smell the coffee, theres no bumper harvest this. wt the man is saying is a fact. even if he went to farm there’s inadequate rain same effect

  2. PF and Catholic Church will now blame God for poor yield in all major crops forgetting that as of today farmers in Msazala where there is a Bye election have not yet been paid. The Farmer support Programme has been more chaotic that needy farmers have had no inputs or had their inputs delivered in late January 2012.With all this in mind why put the blame on poor rainfall in some very few places which normally do not account much for say maize production.

  3. Under RB and the MMD Zambian farmers received the inputs and they produced bumper harvests. Whilst only God can control the rain, what this PF government can do is make ready the +4 million tons of surplus grain. Zambians should not go hungry and there should be no need to see a rise in nshima prices.
