Zambia could be heading back to Libreville soon just weeks after winning the Africa Cup.
According to Faz, Zambia is courting Gabon over the prospect of playing them in a friendly match on February 29.
“We want to go back t say thank you to the people of Gabon,” Faz communications offer Erick Mwanza said.
“They looked after us very well during the Africa Cup and they were always supporting the Chipolopolo and to show our appreciation we have to give them a game.”
Libreville is home of Zambia’s greatest football triumph where on February 12 they beat Cote d’Ivoire on post-match penalties to win their debut Africa Cup title.

This excitement is now taking ridiculous dimensions, go back to Gabon to thank them for what? Never heard of winners of a major tournament return to host country to say thank you. Is the over-taxed Zambian expected to foot the bill for travel and lodging expenses?
Ba Distant Drums keep your ignorance to yourself. Gabon put up a very good performance during the Cup of Nations. It is about international friendlies and Zambia needs them asap. Remember they are meeting Ghana and Sudan in June and we have less than four months to prepare. Ala limo ngatamukwete ifyakulanda, keep your mouth closed.
Gabon is a good side, we should play them in the friendly Games, more over we have our souls there, we lost our Heroes in Gabon and won the AFCON in there with Gabonese people really supported Zambia in Masses. Learn to be Humble, we will earn more. There is nothing wrong with us saying thank you to them as they would have supported Ivory Coast their fellow French speaking country. Good Move FAZ. VIVA Chipolopolo and may the Lord Bless our team.
#2 Senior Citizen,
Unfortunately I can’t respond to your outbbursts because you chose to include a language I do not understand.

Or in England we say, If you have nothing good to say, “Shut Yer Gob” or “Zip It”.

It is important we keep the team thinking, playing and equally important, facing hostile a crowds…we need to get that mental power growing…Gabon is way better than Sudan and we have our first for the World Cup qualifier against the dark horses in June-then Ghana comes to Ndola a week later..this move is very much appreciated…we need this game…FAZ should take these opportunities…as African Champs everyone would want to play us (beat us) and have that feel good moment…the bastards!
Excuse my constructions…its bed time!
@ number 8 dojo hahahahahaha.
It’s fact now every African country will want a shot at us. Faz should request at least two north African teams as well, to prepare Zambia for future encounters with the norths love of lobbed balls :) plus run on crosses.
IYEEEEE Chipolopolo ! I am emotional again. Every time I read Chipolopolo now I sing. Am I the only one still watching the matches on you-tube and singing to himself. Thumbs up if you still pinch yourself to realize we really won the AFCON.
# 4?
Just shut your mouth! You are an embarrassment to bloggers.
Awe mwandi we need these friendlies to maintain our shine, june is around the corner 4 the world cup matches so thumbs up ba FAZ .By the way howz Jacob Mulenga doing? keep us informed kaili.
I have a problem with this. Us going to Gabon to play a Game and to say thank u to them. Thanking them for what? The Gabon disaster has two strong rumours. 1. That we used an aged military plane and the pilot did not have enough rest. hence the accident. Also that the Pilot had trouble with engine at take off and made a fatal error
2. That the plane was not cleared to take off and was brought down by a missile fired by the Gabonese.
Unless the Gabon Air Disaster report is released, to put to rest this incident, we cant go and Play Gabon a friendly Game to thank them. For what? The AFCON tounament was organised by CAF hence we went to play and honour our perished Players.
conspiracy theories.
I totally agree with this and with everyone saying we need these games. Chipolopolo has a very challenging year up ahead. Gabon is a good side and besides that, Libreville will always be our “2nd Home Ground” because of the Gabon air crash. Great way to say thank you as it’s evident that the Gabonese looked after the team well.
but y Gabon, yet there are other good teams on the continent. It’s for the wrong motive.
In the first place (qouted on ZNBC 19hrs news on the 19th feb) it was said that Zambia had to play Gabon to honour the fallen heroes but some FAZ chap. How was it thought of and on whose behalf?
Are you creating other ways of honouring the fallen heroes? The honour was done in style by winning the cup in libreville few km from the crash site.
If you say to ‘play and beat Gabon’ in order to honour the heroes you are simply saying “Gabon shot down the plane’ so I have to ‘revenge.'”
wake up! I think thez reason we dint even meet Gabon coz nature somewhat did not allow the ‘revenge’ kind of honouring. it was a truimph to let by-gones be by-gones & was not a mere coincidence. was it?
Good thinking comment #13.
This is not about playing freindlies to keep the team running. Its something confused going on the the head of the organiser(s) of this friendly.
They can choose other teams. (Hope you also listened to that post on ZNBC news)
But why you want to back in the bush if you dont know what killed your friends ?
meant: But why do you want to go back to the bush if you dont know what killed your friends ?
just another way of stealing the little that was won,and the little that has been pledged to them by the corporate world. believe you me, after this trip, these fools will come back bloke and will start all over again, WITH A BEGGING BOWL. can someone somewhere take a keen interest in these faz financial scandals. first its hiring a bus from sa, and now this. kalusha, your ending will be very, very, sad mark my word.
playing gabon for reasons of football preps is ok not because its our 2nd home or thank them for what? they never played a role for the team to win the cup. the team came all the way from eq. guinea and ended up in gabon for the final nothing to do with gabon. spain has not gone back to south africa to thank i don’t know who..?? they should thank anyway…maybe the hotel manager where the team was camped…
