THOUSANDS of Zambians working in Gaborone and beyond had a bitter-sweet taste of President Sata’s venom when they made requests ranging from access to land, water and money during a meeting for Zambians living in Botswana.
Mr Sata thought this was tantamount to seeking a ‘special’ kind of treatment Zambians back home do not get.
The event held at a Zambian property not far away from the River Walk Mall, started on a shaky note on Tuesday evening when Tobias Mweendo started complaining about what he called “by-standers” in Zambia and finally cited a non-existent walk out of Parliament recently which he said had been conducted by the Patriotic Front to press for some legislation.
Mr Mweendo’s speech, which often digressed, had to be reduced to just about half an hour, before President Sata decided that talking down to the Zambians, would not be such a good idea after all and asked the more than 2,000 Zambians to ask questions in an impromptu and unprecedented Town Hall-style meeting.
The questions from the Zambians ranged from access to land back home, access to money from the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission and the crucial usual politics of employment.
But after the barrage of questions, President Sata stood up to address the Zambians and told them to get up, pack their bags and return to Zambia and help build the nation, if they felt they were getting a raw deal in Botswana.
[pullquote]“You are saving the lives of Botswana children when your children in Zambia are dying,” Mr Sata said. “You are teaching Botswana children when your children back home have no teachers…you ought to be ashamed of yourselves for having obtained a good Zambian education for free, to come and benefit a country that can afford, you must be ashamed.”[/pullquote]
“Why do you want to be given special treatment if you have something to offer? Come back home and offer it,” President Sata said. “It’s clear you have decided to work here in Botswana for an extra kwacha when your people are suffering back home.”
President Sata said it was a shame the “Zambians living abroad chose to moan and complain about doing all sorts of jobs; some good, some bad, when they were needed the most at home and they chose to complain about decisions back home.
“You are saving the lives of Botswana children when your children in Zambia are dying,” Mr Sata said. “You are teaching Botswana children when your children back home have no teachers…you ought to be ashamed of yourselves for having obtained a good Zambian education for free, to come and benefit a country that can afford, you must be ashamed.”
President Sata described as a ‘shame’ the fact that Botswana roads are being designed by Zambian engineers, hospitals run by Zambian doctors and schools taught by Zambian teachers while Zambia lacked in all sectors he mentioned.
“Don’t be surprised if you come home and find the children you left in Grade One are now ministers,” Mr Sata said. “I will make them ministers because they are available and you are not…things are tough everywhere but you have to work hard to make things work. I was in opposition for 10 years and I think you can come back home and make things work if you like, but you chose to work for an extra Kwacha and then complain.”
Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Given Lubinda challenged Zambians in Botswana to state for the record how many relatives they have taken to live with them in Botswana, in order to improve their lives. Responses to this question were elusive.
The Zambians, who were initially full of anticipation of promises of money and goodies, appeared disillusioned as President Sata reminded them that job creation and economic development in Zambia can only be achieved through hard work at home and not rhetoric abroad.
[Report filed in by ANTHONY MUKWITA in Gaborone Zambia Daily Mail]
Same thing as the one deleted.sad that the whole lot of the president can talk to his people like this.let us pray for him.he is not alone
I like his frank talk. Indeed, why should they be treated as special items, when we have remained here to endure the suffering. What have they brought home anyway, most of them only come back very sick or just to be burried while putting the expense on the poor ones whom they had abondomed back home. Tell them Mr. Prez!
Pray for what? Are you crazy?Which part of his words do you find offensive or untrue.I was abroad for a while as well and I asked the same question the president asked. Why stay and make another country better when my own home is in a mess? Why would they expect handouts as though they make any actual impact to the state of our nation save for the dominance of intellectual malnutrition caused by all these migrations.Get real Zambia needs an image too.
Pray for what?? He told Zambians the truth, we Zambians like condemning with little to offer?? Good he told them the truth. We as Zambians are the only people that develop Zambia. Well Done Mr president
We would like to come home Mr Prez if we have opportunities. We would like to come if we know we would be employed. Why should you hire grade one ministers when there are thousands of people graduating every year in Zambia. You know , I don’t know one person that left home and is not sad of leaving mother Zambia behind. We live outside but we love our country. We worked hard to go to school but in return we are wondering on the streets of Lusaka selling tomatoes and kapenta.
Try to use diplomacy Mr Prez, sometimes tough talk does not solve problems. It is people like you who have caused such a brain drain in Zambia. Frankly am very dissapointed with your langauge sir.
The Cobra said ,“Don’t be surprised if you come home and find the children you left in Grade One are now ministers,”
Please read between lines…people at the meeting did not engage the president with genuine issues! All they were asking were favours from the government!
Sata uli chaume, thumbs up sir! Tell them. Chaps. Tafisa nga ameno yamukwa! naya mukwa kulaba uku polomya!
wow, i am glad that Perfecto sees some sense in what president sata was saying
nonsense as usual
Is it difficult for you to understand that when one zambian goes to work abroad he has created employment back home!!!
Mr President,
How embarrassing you not only insulted your “children” the multitude of Zambians who support you but the very people you went to visit. Don’t they have diplomacy lessons for people like you.
I have a dream, Dual Citizenship will come one day and until then am happy to pop in and out of my motherland Zambia.
Shame on you!!!
No… shame on you @Proud Diasporan! Shame on you!!!!! what he said makes perfect sense….granted he could have been diplomatic about it (but i like pipo who call a spade a spade). you don’t even pay taxes in zambia and you call yourself proud……your country needs you to improve and develop it….dual citizenship; are crazy???? I live abroad and feel very ashamed becos i did receive free education yet i haven’t paid enough taxes or contributed enough to the development of my beloved zambia. on second thot, a stinking atitude like that, maybe zambia is beta off without you!!!!!
We all hav to agree to one thing here that the so called king cobra or mad cobra watever he is called has lost it. How in the world will he want us back home when we hav thousands of unemployed ones with the same qualifications we hav. What is he up to, does he want to the number of unemployed people in terms of statistics? Is it the stress because he has failed to deliver on his 90 days promise? Or has he grown to old to think things properly?……..
Countries like S.korea, Indonesia etc have developed because their citizens got free education and chose work in their countries for little pay. The problem with you is that you are proud and greedy and cant accept a job in the civil service or in a rural town. Vacancies in the civil service are abundant but they are not being filled because of visionless cowards like you who have chosen to invest your government sponsored education in another country. Sata is very correct to have said what he said – infact he was even being diplomatic.
@Patriotic Citizen i couldn’t have said beta myself
100% WITH HIS EXCELLENCE, FACT IS MOST OF THESE PPL ABROAD ARE EXPERIENCING AN “APHIRI ANABWELA” SITUATION FORGETTING THAT MORE THAN MONEY THEIR HOMES IS MORE VALUABLE.
Its true this is a stave version of events in Botswana! Unfortunately, Mukwita whose writings I always enjoy, has changed his prose of writing from supporting the right thinking to support stateside! Practically coming back to Zambia wont solve the other unemployed numbers that have escalated to the highest in the world (per capita)! Zambia needs
..” get up, pack their bags and return to Zambia and help build the nation, if they felt they were getting a raw deal…”
Yes quit complaining, have an Exit Strategy, do not expect Zambian government to lay it out for you just because you are abroad or overseas. The money most people make in the diaspora is good enough to secure your lives once you are in Zambia. All you need is an effective Entrepreneur Exit Business Strategy.Quit using partners or relatives who do not share your dreams but your money! Deal with real business strategic planners that can transform your ideas into business ventures as you transition in your resettlement to Zambia,,,STOP nagging the Cobra!
Spot Unit Matrix. Maybe U shud change yo alias 2 complete matrix, coz what U r saying is the truth. We dont always ave to depend on handouts etc.. Its all about planning, planning n strategy.. Props 2u. We need minds like yoz..
thank you Sobelenge. My take is that we need an Investment bridge between diaspora and Zambia that is very very trustworthy(not government) that can execute people’s ideas by engaging business institutions and entrepreneur experts so that your investments are guaranteed. And such an entity is in the working and very soon will be unfolded to the ‘diasporans.’
U want more clients!! Wrong approach baba.
I find your entrepreneurial mindset amusing contrary to the reasoning of many out there. Zambia is not for PF and HE Sata therefore Development must take conscious effort from all of us. keep it up!
No baba I do not need any clients….especially you daddy. I know where I can get real social entrepreneurs. This is a forum to discuss constructive ideas. Do not just be an arm chair analyst and gunslinger! Hold on to your gun, know you target before you shot!
He is right, i agree with him…The truth hurts, don’t it
You obviously are jealous of the people working outside Zambia and have made it. not everyone can be a thief you know. People have used their brains to leave the poverty.
@ ohh yess, i totally agree with you. If they want to remain abroad, let them forget about the benefits from Zambia. They can as well get land from Botswana, if they will be allowed. Why should they be given land on a silver platter when the majority of Zambians back home are struggling to get a small plot just to put up a two roomed hut? How special.
hahaha!!!!! the truth hurts, dont it? …..boyi read aloud what you have written, walaiseka!!!!
@uBUNTUNSE, Zambia needs you more that whatever rat trap you are in. cos face it, if you used those so- called brains here effectively you’d probably be a don in Zed. One more thing is we need the innovation people experienced outside the country. How are people here supposed to know of it if all of it stays in your stories and letters rather than you coming here and building a your own version?
lets just call a spade a spade what he said was true.those Zambuans were asking about land and getting money from cec instead of asking proper questions like that of dual citizenship… Why shud someone in botswana come get land easily than me who livs in zambia and expiriences all the good and bad realities of living here?.atlist he didnt coat em with lies. He told it as it is.
Her, could you at least check your spelling?
Ukwa is a full and will remain so provided he breaths in CO2. Well done Tobias ulimulombwana as usual. Thumbs up musankwa. At least you made ukwa to have another heart attach. Straight from Botswana he had to be flown to India under unknown circumstances. He thot being a president was a joke. He is yet to feel people’s wait. Taninga pe ucilikule.
This tobias is the biggest fool and a bad crop to represent ideas from the diaspora. He was supposed to ask issues pertaining to dual citizenship, speeding up government procedures to start ventures in Zambia, streamline land quantization for Zambians abroad or investment licenses or opportunities. But what does he do? Starts begging the government for favours. The cobra was nice…If I was the president I would have said sit down stupid *****!….I think someone used to say that!! who could it be?..kk ya kk
As much as this is a certified Chainama confinement room speech with every trademark of a mind characterized by indignation, ZACOBO should have known this.
Look now Ukwa has been rashed to India for cardiac treatment after some tantrums and hyperventilation in Botswana that triggered a cardiac arrest.
Please lets pray for this man every life matters. Throughout human history man has learnt that God has a way of dealing with Pharaohs. Every trait manifests a replica of old day Pharaoh.
king cobra! waht king cobra? this guy is mad. This is not 1960’s when he could threaten pipo and even kill others with machetes. Ukwa boy is feeling da heat. It won’t be long b4 time catches up with him. He was busy promising 90 days this 90 days that where is he now. Game on
Useless chap, what venom has this old snake still got. People have to take care of their families, do you think people enjoy being outside their country for the fun of it? Mad president Ukwa!
I do not blame him for saying what he said. We are always complaining about how Zambia is so backward and none of us want to be the change we want to see in others or let alone set an example of how to better things back home.
I have always believed that if I ever have to contribute to zambia’s development agenda, I should be a player on the pitch and not on the terrace. While people could be out there for different reasons, we need to make meaningful contribution to mother land before asking for land, money and other issues. I know of friends in the diaspora who have bought land here and they have built houses. Surely these guys expect govt to one day say oh ZOCOBO, please now travel to lusaka we are giving out plots in chazanga or kafue? Hell no, guys learn to come back once a year, work on projects, go and earn more
Speak for yourself. Some of us in diaspora have huge hopes for Zambia and Zambians. I in no way look down at any Zambians. Stop theorizing about being the change we want to see. There are different ways of being that. Every nation on earth has a diaspora. However, vilifying “diasporans” is almost uniquely Zambian.
Its sad to hear some of your comments you people who dint attend the meeting, the writer of this comment is definately a supporter of Sata, if you encourage how the president handles matters then its you people bringing our country down…Not only did he insult the people of zambia he went on to down talk the country Botswana, (dont laugh at the crocodile while yo bum is still in the water). The president said a lot of rubbish, i wondered if i was listening to a president or some village headman, even a village headman would be more diplomatic, its sad that anyone can encourage such behaviour from a head of state.
Thank you! A lot of people abroad celebrated PF’s election success last year. Now you understand what a disaster that has befallen Zambia. It is not what you say but how you say it. Sata has no sense of propriety nor occasion. To insult Batswana like that is profound idocy. If the school he was opening was less than St Mary’s, why did he accept to go to Botswana? If Zambians are not allowed to implement their ideas in Zambia why should they hang around? No citizen can fund a road. Zambian engineers can design as many roads as they want but if govt is misdirecting money somewhere else, what do you expect but for these engineers to go where their talents are utilised.
Just like the writer of the over version is Anti-PF; so we have balanced the equation. As an immigrant, we get no respect at all, thats why Sata had to use hard language which you call insults. grow up
Now I understand GRZ’s appointments and disappointments – it is meant to show that the president is the sole rewarder and punisher of civil servants. If you don’t perform, he will replace you with an even less competent person.
All joking aside, this is a sad development that should not happen again! It is likely that ZACOBO did not open the meeting a good note, and may have been asking GRZ for favours, but I’d like to imagine they did so because the Botswana government provides these very basic services to its citizens and wanted to know if GRZ did the same.
However, it seems this is not the message that was received. That said, the president should have been the bigger man and handled the issues raised with diplomacy.
If Bots was a war nation, we’d be in battle right now.
its clear to me that this man is a 24 carat crown who hijacked our country with fake election promises i wonder if he has a plan or direction as to where our country is heading, i guess its what zambians wanted after all.
Hell no, guys learn to come back once a year, work on projects, go and earn more
UKWA will soon stop having audiences with diasporans to save face.Ever wondered why he has not held a single press conference 2×90 days in office?Fear of embarrasment from incompetence
The president said his rubbish but he was also told the truth that you chaps back home fail to do. He even got confused and start insulting the host nation shame…ati ba kateka rubbish. Who doesnt know that Botswana is better than Zambia. Sata even saw for himself what his friend id doing here. Thats why he was mad.
I agree with you.Chaps back home hero-worship him and always backslapping him for doing things wrongly. You guys(Bots) rock!
The President is right let those peole come back here if they want to be given that they want. They are not special in fact they will get land prove that they will stay here and develop it. Well done Mr President this is leadership!! bakapoke land uko kwine baikala.
Just how would a whole nation of civilized individuals choose a man like Ukwa as president! Who, in effect is crazy?
Sata is not a Statesman or national leader. Even headman position does not fit him. He is there to serve his tribe and bootlickers. I blame MMD for this mess because their corruption and greed drove Zambians to vote for a poor alternative. Out of the frying pan, into the fire! For those trying to defend the indefensible, denying that this guy is not leadership material will not protect Zambians from the impending disastrous mismanagement. This man can not work with sound minded individuals or a team. He wants to make decisions alone like he is dealing with personal property. In my opinion, impeachment is the only suitable remedy. There is no point giving somebody that is untrainable and can not learn, time to learn the job. He also missed an opportunity to learn from Botswana
I think the short end to this tale is that we should, as Zambians, learn to walk the talk. Look at the countless laws (both corporate and civil) that are broken with impunity. Look at the allocations that are diverted. Look at how many people are living way beyond their means and not even bothering to work for the little that they claim they are being paid. It is this, and not being in diaspora, that must be examined first. There are nations that have benefited from a reverse brain drain from the West because they still have sanity where they came from. The government must establish water-tight observance of law and order first before hurling desperate statements at its diasporans…
This is more or less same as what the other media reported. Point is that the people should contribute meaningfully to mother Zambia’s development. Ba SATA you are right thats the way to go. Thumbs Up!!!
Powerful stance from a president who really means bussiness. He called a pade a spade. Who are these people in despora, are they so special. Atfer all they asked for it by starting with stupid questions, them thought it was a president like nyamasoya.
Well done Mr. President, these cowards they thought they are angles, let them rot in Botswana. Why complaining you *****s, come back if you are zambian but if not stop talking about zambia you fools.
Usual zambian jelaousy baba!
Spot on Mr President!
“Ask not what the country can do for you but what you can do for your country”
JFK
U don’t know that sending forex back home is a way of helping build zambia also! Very short sighted. Jealousy does not pay.
@Daddy, are you for real?? Forex??? how about paying some taxes to zambia…..how bout actually doing some ground work that will contribute to the development of zambia???? Jealous, who are you kidding??? we both know its not all rosy living abroad and pipo actually reminding you everyday that you are a foreigner… deep down u know where am heading with this!!!!!
Ok let me call out some of you Zambians in Zed also. For all the calls for people in diaspora to “make a difference in zed”, a lot of you are making incomes that are comparable in magnitude to what western firms pay. Yet how many UNZA alumni have said lets set up a fund to just paint one block or fix some showers or sinks. Not everyone in diaspora earns $100,000 a year. Those that are big earners in some cases have built homes and bought cars for their families. Those that do not earn that much have at the very least paid rents for their folks, paid tuition for their siblings, and funded the odd project (some even while working their way through school). So do you expect even students that are working their way through school and saving up some money to come to Zed every year?
You are right on! because that is exactly what most of us are doing!!!! Trying to help the people at home…. and that is the reason why we are where we are now!
Sreet kid you must know that Botswana is good because botswanas made it so, why are we failing to make zambian good as well so that the same people can come and work here? why only making other countries better but when you die they bring the dead body to zambia to come an rot here? NO MAN AIKONA WENA!
The message is clear, in short our president has said Dont complain if you dont contribute anything to Zambia after running away from zambian poverty and you are helping diaspora economy to grow, sata has told us the truth take it or leave. How do you get a land when you are not physically present to apply for a land? Honestly sata spoke his mind straight up and i think ZACOBO questions to sata ,some of them were stupid and lacked respect to our president, they deserve what they got from him for not being rational.
Mr. Sata is right. All Zambians are equal and no one is superior than the other. So all those who have capacity should contribute to the Nation
This President is so wise. This is exactly what we need to unite all Zambians and develop our country. This is the calibre of a president I always told you will lead us into the modern age. He has such strategic thinking. Just look how stable our economy is after he took over. Let us not be like india that has wasted its time using funds and skills from diapora to develop its country. For all you Zambians in diaspora, we do not need the half a billion dollars that you send in remittances to your relatives.
Stupid utterances!!The same Sata and his MMD crooks then closed UNZA for almost a year in 1997,barely a year later another closure for about 5 months.During these periods, some of our friends got dipressed and died, others just stopped school and many trekked out of the country.Worse after we got our degrees, hard earned, there were no jobs. So,tell me you *****s supporting Sata on this score….did you expect us to become jerabos or hard core criminals.Ba swine if you shallow on issues please don’t comment.Sata and his MMD made us and our parents go through hell.Companies were closed and people died!!!..bafikala mulimbwa sana bambi!!Panyo pano bagalu imwe!!
Iwe ulibe panyo thats the reason you resort to insults… and then if you do not have a panyo then you are not normal.. You are just a dull chap, how about others who have made in thru hard work with much endurance. You tailess lazy dog!
Ndiwe dull dog,kolokombwa…..you are the lazy one chikala walinjishiba.Fooosek galu wakantu.slooo nyoko!!
for your info swine iwe,i have made it big time through endurance and hardwork.I don’t have to prove to you musata wanoko how intelligent i am!…waba akanyo mwitobo!!…you are a completely dysfunctional human being.
To say that Zambians abroad are not contributing is total nonsense. This tendency to criticize people in the diaspora “as shown by our presido” is totally uncalled for. I have seen numerous comments saying “you went with nothing, will come back with nothing.” That is what the people that we went to school with wish for people in diaspora just because we are outside Zed. While for us when we hear that you have prospered in Zed we rejoice. The Zambian diaspora is mix of very different individuals. Some are intellectuals that went to UNZA then left. Some never went to UNZA or CBU but left right after highschool and in the motions of life married a foreign husband/wife and started a life.
Not sure why people have complexes regarding Zambians abroad.Every Zambian abroad I know sends money home. Some Zambian doctors have teamed up with some missionaries and send medicines and supplies to health centres in their villages.Others are funding business in Zambia. We don’t all have to be in Zambia to develop Zambia, this isn’t 1950.
He mentioned already on youth day that Government is not an employer its Employment Federation of Zambia. So all of you who want employment you are going to a wrong person. It is then sometimes better to serve others more especially when they appreciate you. For those who are abroad you ve not done something wrong when you are trying to survive. Zambia has got harsh conditions such that when you find employment else where you can not hasitate to leave. We all love Zambia but due to selfishness which lies with the top most its better we stay here where they can treat us as their own.
Instead of just ranting,Sata should ask his finance ministers how much remmitances get into Zed from overseas. It’s simple and this is part of the gross national income,GNI.It has a percentage and once he knows this amount, let him come and engage with people in the diaspora.Even the US takes stock of how much Americans overseas contribute to the GNI.It’s very disheartening to see an elderly man like Sata portraying such childish tendencies. No one is asking for favours.Land in Zambia is a commodity which is readily available on the free market,it’s always advertised in the papers, people don’t need Sata’s ‘holy’ intervention. We have educated our sibblings,we have brought some of them with us and they have a life, tabasakala iyo.Sata himself was a cleaner in the UK.kupusa bati!!!
There are people as I speak that are working on multi-million dollar projects that will benefit Zambia and all you have to say come back and make Zambia better. Whenever those projects kick off, you may not even attribute to the efforts of Zambians in diaspora. Just last year, Zambians in diaspora facilitated business deals between Zambian companies and US firms and investors. No one talks about that. There are different ways of helping make Zambia better. Building houses is not the only way Zedians can make things better. I think it comes down to this. As a country we are less traveled than our friends in Kenya and Nigeria and so we have growing to do with regards to how we treat people in diaspora.
Excellent! We are too backward as a nation to appreciate how other nations have benefited from sending their nationals to work or even play football outside their countries. Plus jealousy plays a major part.
When I worked in UTH I would hear an ambulances as they brought serious patients and my heart would sink because I knew if they were serious nothing could be done for them.Once we were 4 doctors on call.A man came in with internal bleeding.I prepared him best I knew how for threatre but when we took him there my senior just looked at me and said what do you want us do?Nothing can be done.So its not the numbers of doctors sometimes its what tools do they have to work with.I would see babies die because the ventilators in D block (then) were about 30yrs old and delivery of oxygen could not be guaranteed. You can only work in such pathetic conditions for so long. There hasn’t been political will to support health care in Zambia since President Kaunda ruled.
I concur with Dr,Jungular, the environment is very harsh for anyone who is looking at starting a business because the cost of doing business is very high for indigenous people whilst foreigners get tax relief, for somepone looking for employment becvause the ruling parties are busy putting their unqualified relatives and cadres in employment or even for someone who wants to make an honest living.People have 2 choices now, either to start stealing like evryone else or to look for greener pastures in countries where they will recogniose what you have to offer without looking at which party you belong to,which tribe or who you know.
4 years ago,i was enthusiatically encouraging my friends who are in the diaspora to come back because they environment was suitable for one to b e enterprising.I came definitely tell you now that i have changed my stance because i have stuck it out but am unable to make ends meet because we do not have the tools to succeed.I myself am looking for the next chance to find greener pastures to be able to be paid according to the work i do and be able to look after my family without worrying about the ever increasing bills.
The truth really hurts! Bashikulu had a point here, please before you go into diaspora leave something to come back to here in zed otherwise mukalalilafye lyonse because you are scared of returning when there is nothing to start with here you start living on the streets for a starters. Sart investing into Zed now you might just want to come back in future and you will be happy!
Instead of Sata venting off his failure to run the country on Zambians in the diaspora, let him create jobs for the many graduates who don’t have jobs.We did not tell you to promise manna in 90 days,it was your own illusion and now it’s back honting you.Ba Sata ubukaka mwamiletelela, you wanted to be president, now your plate is full and you are busy vomitting. In Bemba they say, ifyakulila mubushiku bafimwena kumalushi,si apa manje,in the dark you sneaked in and at the dawn of light, your nakedness and lies have been fully exposed. To borrow from your own saying, mwaliloba ilya uma.Ala shikulu mwebakalamba nimwe, mwa chefyako bwasabwasa pa kanwa!!
Another thing. No one said people in diaspora are better than people in Zed. The people in Zed are Zambia’s primary resource. No one has asked for Sata to take resources from resident Zambians and give them to people abroad (except maybe the guy referred to in the article). that is not the united stance of all diasporans. All we asked for is the logistics to make the greatest possible contribution via dual nationality. If I have a foreign passport and decide to relocate to Zambia with my American wife for 5 years to set up a company, I would have to go through hoops with immigration. On the other hand if I am a permanent resident here in America I can not be outside the country for more than 6 months. So you see it does not work. As you all well know, business by emissaries does not work.
Disgraceful! This reflects a lot on the kind of education and civiliation the first expatriate to UK has. Quite frankly, he had something to say but did not know how to say it. His mental capacity is equivalent to his education, that is why even during the campaigns he kept changing positions; could retain what he had said at an earlier occasion. As a truly Zambian with everything but clothes in Zambia, I was embarrased thouroughly by Sata. No Diplomacy at all. He was accorded all the respect and protocal in this world, but he decided to insult the Batswanas. Khama and Batswanas will never hold Sata in such esteem again! He is written off, as a close ally. Does he mean he didnt know he was going to open a school here – what did he think a school in Botswana is? Shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this really what the president said.It pains me that they have not reported what he really said.To me its like he is still behaving like an man in the opposition. There is no way he can talk to us like that.It was embarrassing and worse of very intimidating.Somebody has to advice him that he is the president of Zambia and hence president for every citizen.I watched the assignment on Muvi TV which hosted Rupiah Banda. What he said touched me.Sata must know that time for politicking is over and he has to work and that he has to be very careful of the people that advice him.He must tone down on arrogance and bullying. These are nothing but cheap politics.
Sata leave the diasporas alone and do your expected job which is developing zambian by attracting investiment, etc, which will create jobs and which in turn will bring the diasporas back. Period!
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing“. If we fill the president is a problem let`s keep on hammering until we correct the situation. Pressure groups from within the country and the diaspora. At the same time you don`t sit in Botswana for years watching bushmen dancing makirikiri and expect to find land and a house for you in Zed. There are always land/property adverts and financing institutions you can access. The president may fall short of diplomacy but he was right on a number of issues.
Fellow Zambians out there, you have no idea what Value you have left in this our Beautiful Country. There is Nothing wrong with what our Dear president Said, he simply was telling you how much he cares about you and your Families. Can anyone amongest you who are accusing the President for Insulting Stand up and say what ever he said was not true.
Can you say that Zambia doesnt need any of the People out of Zambia to come and help duild Zambia with all their Expertise.
Shame on all those Accusing Sata for Doing anything wrong. He just has courage to do what others Failed to do. This is your Country and has lots of Potential. Mr. President Big up for calling a spade a spade.
Long Live Zambia.
I shall return when this generation of frail politicians finally retires or answers the Lord’s call.I pray Zambia like an eagle rises above this challenge and produce a King David who will win every battle to place the nation where it belongs.Come 2016 Zambia will be re-birthed.
i leave in UAE, Dubai and things here are done differently. its policy that any foreign investor must partner with locals or that investiment wont be licensed. two, they make it mandatory for that company to employ locals and pay them a minimum wage. here locals earn more than foreigners doing the same job. now in zambia foreigners come and are given freedom to do all they want and on top of that given tax holidays and the zambians are made to pay for roads damaged by these investors transporting resources away from zambia. i worked for Gourock and zambians were made to eat from dirt canteen while indians enjoyed good food in cleaner canteen. now mr President clean up the house and then ask the diaspora to come back
DO NOT ENCOURAGE RUBBISH, The people dint say we want lannd – They asked how possible it was to aquire it from here…..
The people dint run away – personally i left coz i couldnt find employment, even upto now, graduates are roaming the streets, how dare he say go back home as if he’l find me a job and those many zambians looking for jobs, the amount of experience that my country will benifit from wen i go is massive, all thanks to this country.
People offered to go home and help and explained how they tried but were let down by government hence asking him how they cud go about…
important questions were asked and he chose to ignore them. and to think i can vote for that cloun, Never
am glad some people see sense in what Sata said. and i agree with him, it is this same diplomacy which has made Zambia what it is today…..poverty stricken. why do people fail to call a thing for what it is. Sata answered based on the question not issues of unemployment etc.
grow up yout hink because you are abroad we should feel sorry for you ati you miss home…atabane
Ninshi, balikutana visa. Why the hate!
For those of you who want to go back to Zambia good luck….
I will continue enjoying my Victoria Bitter and read about you on LT.
didnt read speak in botswana, bt LT Should publish speak for positive contributions.Even in zim you form company with locals, it empowers locals, here even maize trading is open for all foreighners, zambia should learn from mugabes style of empowerment. Those working abroad just have projects here at home and continue working there to make cash.We have alot of labour here to do the job.
Im not politically affiliated to no party. But on this one Im agreable with the President. What we diasporians have is a cancer that needs immediate treatment. If you have not noticed, the questions raised in Bots are are similar by Zambians from other countries. The Question is How monotonous can we get and what are we doing about it? I think anyone would be frastrated hearing the same thing over and over regardless of their status
(President or not). Crying one Zambia but different communities in diaspora is nonsensical if you ask me. We all want a piece of Zambia and if so, why cant we be one voice outside the country calling for a common cause?
President Kagame did it and those with brains responded. Look where Rwanda is?????
The message was hard hitting but its true. In other countries, the citizens in the diaspora contribute so much to national development back home. A good example is the Philippines where its citizens working outside the country contribute about 10 percent to the GDP of the country. I travel extensively and each time you meet fellow zambians they are usually a complaining type. Zambians think its a blessing to work outside even if it means sweeping streets in Europe. I have meet Zambian professionals in Europe doing jobs for the uneducated in Zambia. I think people need to be proud to invest back home and compete with others back home. This is the only way to contribute to the development of the country
What makes you think we are not investing home. I live in the UK but I have just set up a company in Zambia whicch will be employing 100 people. Get your facts man!
Proud of you but fight for something that will recognise this kind of investment by state.
He is right and all you fulls who voted for him will vote wisely next time.Stop complaining!!!!!
This is the same man who fired these guys in Botswana. Who is patriotic? The man that fires his countrymen or someone who is simply trying to earn a living for his family? I say let Sata work with foreign expertise (Pakis) for now until Zambians learn to value their own people. That behaviour is unbecoming of a head of state. Very soon he will have no friends in the region as he already aggravated our Malawian brothers and sisters. I think Kambwili can do a better job as he will just be pointing fingers at people instead of insulting them. I hope the good people of Botswana recognise that it was just one misguided individual insulting them and do not hold the whole nation responsible. I am sad that some bloggers think it is acceptable for a person to conduct himself like that. Shameful
All Zambians are equal although the Zambian diaporans feel they are more equal than those at home since they have achieved more by working in a foreign country far better than zambia.
Sata has said great things. Keep reading his comments, you will see more as days go by. This is something he has always kept close to his heart for years but that day in bots, he offloaded it.
#7 Well written, Zambian intellectuals are not risk takers they are more manual/procedure oriented type of skilled worker instead of being risk entrepreneur intellectuals….wake up guys stop buying expensive cars and invest back home, for the first time lets enjoy realism talk from a States man, this stupid diplomatic conservative approach and sweet talking intellectuals would like to hear should come to a STOP, poor majority need help they can’t even travel like we do so stop listening to motivational speakers and develop mother Zambia….
The President told you guys in Bots what no body dares do. Very few of you guys have added value to the lives of your families back home. Zambians are not like West Africans and Asians who offer real help to their kith and kin coz of being self centred. You pissed off the Cobra and u’ve pissed me off too!
LOLest
keep quiet u fool
Truth hurts. At least you know what you good 4 nothing suckers are! Cobra says he was one of the 1st expatriates up Engie. Came back and with a vision hes now prez. Most of you a-phiris got only vibe to show when you get back here. Stitch in time though. Hate it if you like, ts your bone to chew.
Aint coming back sorry atleast not now,by the way Mr President,i have built some modern flats in Lilayi area because of my hard work here.Yes am working here of course not cleaning toilets or a porter like you were in the UK.I have a job that requires me to wear a suit everyday thanks.
Its not what your country can do for you, it’s what you can do for your country…
always complaining, and waiting free things,my foot.remain there in die spoils.while yu complain about this and that pipo frm where yu are come here and make it.this country is on its path to serious development,yu will even cry more very soon when we start reaping the rewards.we need you when things are tough and not when all is plain sailing.remain where you are if that is what you feel is good for you chaps in die spoils.well said MCS presido.
The tone was very different when Ukwa came to the UK during his campaign. Those who were at the london meeting will be surprised by the sudden change of heart about the people in diaspora. He was happy to receive capmaign donanations then. What has happened?
He is now President. He does not need your money nor votes. That is what the real “Donchi kubeba” message was about. You were not told what he really wanted from you.
Dont get angry. You have the answers to your questions, go to plan B already…….
People who are outside Zambia always think they are the cream of Zambian society that’s why they ask for favors because they want to be treated as special case. Look at Botswana which is using our best teachers. Now they are growing faster than we because suddenly, all the teachers wanted to teach in Botswana where there is extra money. If they are getting extra money, why should they seek for favors? I applaud the president for using hard language on them. We Zambians are used to politicians who are soft spoken and want to treat us like babies. This is Michael’s time and we should wake up. Its too much. If they want land, let them come back to Zambia and apply for land the same way we are struggling. After all, they abandoned our country and land for greener pastures.
Its called tough love…..ever heard of it. First it makes you angry, then it knocks you off your comfort zone, just then you realise you are on the brink of making a costly decision. A rebound is in order for most of us living in pretence and hoping that GRZ will provide answers for all our needs. I suggeest we make use of the “go to guys” in different aspects of personal development.
As a matter of fact there are very few if any Zambian teachers left in Botswana government secondary schools where preference (as in other government sectors ) is given to citizens. By 2002 the government had trained enough citizen teachers in most subjects. Expatriate teachers are employed mainly in private schools. In the late 1980s the government of Botswana embarked on among others, the implementation of the 9 years of basic education plan. ie 7 years of primary school and 2 years(now 3) of junior secondary school for every child. Schools were built and teachers had to be found. Basically that is how teachers from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Carribeans etc were sought. We now have a 90% plus enrollment level in primary and junior secondary schools.
Mr Sata is right but the problem is lack of diplomacy and the hostile manner he puts his points across. I can tell you that the Tswanas are not impressed at all, my cousin in Serowe has told me. My mother is Tswana and my dad is Zambian and must say be careful how you deal with Ian Khama, ask Mugabe. This could be the beginning of strained foreign relations between the two neighbours and could have a negative impact on Zambians in that land of milk and honey. By the way how many Tswanas live and work in Zambia? Maybe none!
Shame on that Man. We work outside and send a sum of money every year to our home land. If we come back will he pay us. Some of us we paid dearly for our education and he can not say we enjoyed free education.
If this is the true version of what happened, there is nothing wrong with the President’s address.
As I said on the other version of his speech yesterday, the biggest problem Michael Sata has is communicating in English. Even if I’m not Bemba but I remember that in the past he usually appeared to be more articulate when speaking in Bemba – like I said yesterday that is like most Bembas I know. There is a lot of sense in what Sata has said, it’s just that it doesn’t sound polite and sensitive in the way he said it in English . There is an English way to say the things he said in a more powerful and positive way: RB used to say the same things, Levy used to say the same thing, Chiluba used to say the same thing, but because these guys were articulate in English they sounded positive and supportive. Still, I wish Sata could now give serious attention to the economy and stop comedy
What sata said was full of BS, it shows that the man is out of touch with reality. About 80% of Zambia’s diplomatic personnel are either relatives of the president or his close associates. The system is rotten. The president should not fool himself that Zambia can develop without an input from the diaspora and we the people in diaspora should not cooperate with the PF government until dual nationality is granted. How can Zambia eradicate ignorance, illiteracy and poverty when the best teachers and lecturers are teaching abroad because Zambia does not care? How can Zambia fight disease and high infant mortality rate when highly skilled Zambian heart surgeons, consultant pediatricians, nurses have abandoned Zambia for better pay and recognition?
Going to Zambia next month for Gud …finished by course, waiting for position nd fed up seeing Zambians suffering in the UK.
Vivi President SATA
People hate those who tell the truth. The president just told these cowards the truth. The reason why he won is because he told people what they where able to see.
Sata should not have sunk so low as to insult people. His job is to unite all Zambians and not driving a wedge between countrymen. There is no doubt that many people living in the diaspora are highly qualified and the country could use their services. Some people on this blog fail to recognise this little fact, something other nationals value. We need leaders that can bring together Zambians from all walks of life and work together. It does not help to accuse one another of lack of patriotism, after all our corrupt politicians are the most unpatriotic. If Sata continues on this path he will divide the country further. After all he is the one who fired these same people and now he has an opportunity to correct his mistakes
The president is right. The truth hurts. Some of you were going to have property if you were here. I know people who have come back home with nothing and to nothing.
His speech was excellent and touching. The President wants serous people to come and develop with us. He is not sympathizing with anyone but encouraging all of us. After all he is the right man who can turn tables for food and batter at the moment. Go ahead HEMCS
SATA IS MENTALLY SICK AND I AM SURE HE IS GONE TO INDIA FOR PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT. WHAT PRIVATE VISIT CAN A PRESIDENT MAKE THAT SHOULD NOT BE ANNOUNCED TO THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA? I REMEMBER THAT UKWA MADE A LOT OF NOISE WHEN RB WENT TO LIBYA FOR A PRIVATE VISIT AND NOW HE IS DOING THE SAME THINGS HE WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT WHEN HE WAS IN OPPOSITION. ONLY TIME WILL TELL WHERE THIS COUNTRY IS HEADING TO. I ALSO WANT TO REMIND THOSE WHO ARE IN DIASPORA THAT THE MESSAGE HE PRESENTED TO ZAMBIANS IN BOTSWANA APPLIES TO YOU ALL. DO NOT PRETEND THAT YOU HAVE NOT HEARD. HE SPOKE TO ALL ZAMBIANS IN DIASPORA.
How many Chinses or Nigerians are in the diaspora? The money that is sent home is re-invested in their economy.Do I have to go FINDECO house to shout how much am sending to my aging parents in Chinsali or school fees for my niece. The land we are asking is not for free.We want to build factories and thereby create employment for the youths which the PF has failed to do.Ask the Livingstone District Council how Zambians especially teachers contributed to the development of the tourist town long before there was any tourism boom. The diasporans are exposed and would like to come back to share their expertise & invest while working abroad. However, with the “kaponya and tuntemba” type of mentality ,the country will not develop.Thank you for the insults your excellency.I regret voting for you
Sata left Botswana hastly because President Khama observed that Zambia was slowly losing its democratic trend and told Sata to never follow Mugabe’s path. It upset him so much that his BP rose upon hearing the truth. When he went for dinner later in the evening where he was invited by the Zambians living in Gaborone, he couldnt concentrate. He was still shocked by Khama’s advise and how Matswana view him. Worse still, the Zambians asked him simple questions which he found uncomfortable to deal with. Instead he went balistic attacking Botswana, Zambians living in the diaspora, ranting like a grade zero. He couldnt stay longer and refused to dine. The following morning he left. When he got to Lusaka his BP rose further. His doctors recommended evacuation. Today he’s in India.
That’s sounds right!
This explanation makes sense. The problem is that many Zambians keep quiet when they see something wrong, that the so-called leaders are not aware that they are wrong. That is why for him to realize he is wrong, somebody else, in this case a fellow president and a brave ZACOBO guy had to spell it out for the cobra. I blame the people that he surrounds himself with for licking his as$ and not advising. The same thing happened with Kaunda and Chiluba. Too many yesmen and few advisors. The King (Cobra) had to go to Gabarone to realise he had no clothes!!
kachepa?
I lived “abroad” once and when you come back, you expect people to roll a red carpet for them. Sata’s tough response actually makes a lot of sense. Those guys in Botswana want to make us feel as if we are begging them to come back that’s why they are making these demands. Sata was even softer on them otherwise he should have refused to speak to these traitors. Zambians living in diaspora want to be treated with kid gloves. They want a president who is down on his knees begging them to come back to Zambia. Why should they ask for favors from the Zambian government when they ran away from the country? Let them ask the government of Botswana, which they are contributing a lot to, secure land in that country. What do they contribute to Zambia anyway? We who are in Zambia pay taxes!
Your thinking is tunneled ! Need to think better and broader than this. I know you can do better Zedian!
The trueth hurts, Mr SaTA has said the right things….
Zambians living in the so called diaspora are very stupid & want to bring us down, home sweet home ba kembo mukabwela by the time u will come to chula here back home.
Come back & develop your contry, nice lecture Mr president!!!!
No need to call stupid… I miss Rupiah.
You Zambians in Botsawana pushed the President over the edge, now he is reported to be hospitalized in India
Life is tough in zambia. run run if you can
What Sata said is nonsensical and just emotional rantings. You do not make a decision to leave where you are based on emotions.KK gave us free education yes, which free education did Sata and his MMD cohorts give us?NONE!!How can you just tell people go back.Kagame of Rwanda, even Ghana has attracted back it’s people and they have set-up minimum salaries for those professionals in high demand. We can also tell Sata to go to the village and go do some farming coz frankly and honestly so,he is beyond the legal retirement age.Sata lichona ilyakamamo na menshi. So far the man has exhibited alarmingly high toxic levels of incompetence. It’s even the same Sata whoz children were educated abroad.Joe his son is a civil engineer yet he was never at CBU or UNZA,the boy was abroad,so why complain Mr.Sata
hey guyz,i have read pipo are complaining others are bitter about the 10,000 dollars Ba president gave to that school in Bots, for me that is just a seed he sowed in Botswana, there shall be better things happening in our schools here as well, what you need to complain about is the high school fees we are paying and not about the little ten thousand dollars he gave in bots, hey besides Zambians living in Bots may have the opportunity to learn at that School
Well said Mr President, clear and to the point. Sometimes truth pains. For example, Tswanas spends their weekends on farms developing their county whilst most Zambians spend weekends getting drunk and being lai.. and mourning at every opportunity. Why not visit Zambia at some point and apply or buy land, pay for sinking borehole(s) and also find time to apply for an investment licence which if approved can facilitate loan application for various funds. Why have we left investment licence application in the hands of for a better name ba choncholis?
King cobra was right, I had an opportunity to listern to one group of guys who are in diaspora in Botwswan u know these guys really talk heal about Zambia has if there are not Zambians themselves have u ever heard of an Indian talking heal about their country? The truths thats the bottom line……in the UK when you come back u come back with nothing u have to start from zero……..if u had cash u come back a poor man then ater some time u start looking like a mad man……..I remember King Cobras wise words ati Ubushilu bwaliwamapo ukuchila ubulofwa….What these guys need is proper planning when they are in diaspora invest back home use relatives if u cant trust them, come up with a savings plan with a zambian company there are so many from insurance company to banks save 4 a rainy day
India will design and Install Zesco substations and yet we have Zambians who think are more educated than others and now work out side Zambia. Wake up zambian engineers, why work out side the country jobs meant for uneducated in Zambia? Mind you, we never envy you any more because you are notb adding any value to this country where your brothers and sisters leave. Sanegalies are much more better than you zambians in diaspora.
Malema, you are stupid. Why are you saying things that did happen, stupid *****, so you are supproting these buggers with no respect who have run away from relatives beacuase of greediness.
Someone tell me. I live mu diaspora, earn $3250 a fortnight. Have a 9 -5pm job, work car, free medical etc. Tell me company that will employ me in Zambia, atleast match pay and am on the next SA airways. By the way I only have a degree in Social Work.
Pippa, you can rote out there, we will manage this country better and in few years time we will welcome you at the KK air port like a Phiri anabwela, with totally nothing but just good english which will be of no use to us.
the world around have called him very dull.how does he say the people of sesheke dont need a bridge across the zambezi.ata ati the president.heeee.the worst interview.he should start night school.but he looks like someone who can not pass an exam.was he a domestic servant or a splumber.every body is laughing at him and many are denying that he is their presdo.who can present such a man as his presdo.ahhhhhh, some people.
Diaspora bla bla bla Stop whining and come back home and help build this great country shya!!
I think people are free to decide to live wherever they want at anytime forcing pipo to come back home is not a solution especially that a good life in Zambia is not gauranteed. Though I live in Zambia I still feel that there are advantages to living in diaspora especially those in developed countries, ok let me compare like for like say one lives in Europe and can afford public housing and public education and another person back home also in a similar situ dont ask me who enjoys better amenities. There is always an issue of pipo saying that its difficult to own property out there especially real eastate but its not any easier here either, so the best thing is to make the most out of what we have regardless of where we are, by the end of the day we are just passersby on this earth
You have spoken like a true man of the soil. And believe me as someone already said we all miss home. Should we come back like aphiri so be it.
just stay in your so called tribalistic zambia.who wants to be in your dirty filthy country, who cant treat their own so called president when he is sickling.A country that has gone to the hands of thieves,liers,tribalists.ehhhhhhh.we just can live in zambia.those who cling to still work in zambia dont posess required qualifications to work in disphora beacusebtheir qualifications were from leaked exams.they even got to unza dubiously so they can only work in zed where they have a relative who can give them a job through nepotism, tribalism.in diasphora my friend you will be in top form.when you go to asia for treatment, you will find a lozi/tonga doctor treating you.we are not like you.bon chilubi island die chilubi island.no.berlin is great mwanna, you get things on merit.continue being in
your zambia where you have people giving you favours for being a relative.given stole the lime light,he was more a darling than the old thing.
People have the right to live wherever they want.
Internal migration also matters. Young people migrate from rural Zambia to Lusaka. may be Sata can lecture them too if he wants. It’s all about opportunities.
Excellent! I think President Sata’s policy(not PF)because he does not consult is that Bembas must work in Bembaland, Ngonis in Ngoniland, Tongas in Tongaland for development of their areas. What a backward policy!
Mule mwenako ba kandile my good president sata does not entertain ba kandile, u r used to mmds style iyakulishamo for making foolish statement like “people in the diaspora r happy with presido” mcs does not operate like that. Hammer them shi chilufya no more ba kandile, some families have been ba kandile 4 too long from their grannys to their fathers to them nomba sata aputula chain yaba kandile.
AFRICA??
where to with such arrogant leaders, SHAME,how many more years of Slavery. What type of people here can applaud a fool??People left because of Corrupt leaders like him in MMD.Hard working people who would love to come back home to their loved ones, if given a chance,but….Shame.Get out while u can.
I am shocked with the support ukwa is getting. Let us not look at this ityem in isolation. Form a pattern and you will understand what sort of a person is ukwa.he nEeds to exhibit wisdom, character, humility, good manners etc. He is suppose to show the difference btwn one in kalingalinga and himself. As things stand, I am sorry the man is untrainable.
If you are getting more money in diaspora, then why ask the government to secure a piece of land for you? Why ask for dual citizenship when you say you are comfortable where you are? Sata did well to shout at you. You are used to governments that think you are the elite just because you are in another country. Come and work hard for the land, you are not special. In fact, patriotic Zambians are those who have stayed in the country and suffered with us. Get rid of the MMD mentality. ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY AND NOT WHAT THE COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU.
very very very true boss
All u chaps in the diaspora are hurt coz King Cobra told the truth. I mean i leave in Abu Dhabi since this year. if the president came here, WHY SHUD I START MAKING DEMANDS? why do u make demands and where did u get the audacity to make demands? zambians especially in Botswana just DRINKS the hell out of themselves. I am taking a contigent of Investors to see opportunities once the ministry of Tourism approves. This is how we should think. what u chaps shud have told the presi is how many investors u are planning to take to Zed and what investments u yoselves have made, not making silly demands. i only have three years in Abu Dhabi then i go and develop tourism in zed coz i know i can help GRZ to create employment. STOP ukuilishanya kwati baiche and do somthing for Zed
The most dissapointing thing about us Zambians is we talk toomuch and we do not appreciate. You chose too and live abroad and you want to be treated differently and given priorities, for what for, for who and why. We have so many problems in zambia as it is.We want land, jobs and so on en then you who has gone to Botswana want land when i dont have? stay there and dont complain and aquire land that side. Tulekeni andleave the President alone, he has only been in power less than a year and its amazing how pipo are talking even those who messed up. Its true what they say if talking was development, Zambia would have been the most developed country in Africa! Shame on you diasporas
thats the king cobra spitting the truth. Zambians are a lazy people wanting to get everything on a silver plat, much talk and no work wont do us any good in the development of this nation. Let us all come back and work work work for mother zambia. My president i salut you, you are indeed a man of action.
Looking at the comments above it is clear this man Sata is a divider and not a uniting factor. This is not safe for the national stability. Good Lord our God please help change this man’s approach to national issues. He is dividing the house big time. By the end of the next two 90days period we are likely to stop seeing eye to eye with our own brothers and sisters. Are all leaders appointed and Anointed by him above…… I am lost with my little faith
I agree that Zambians like being treated with kid gloves. That’s why we are in a sad state of affairs now because we like handouts and patting from the government. I welcome President Sata’s new style of leadership. He just reminds me of Mwanawasa who we hated so badly because of the way he spoke to us. In the end, we discovered Mwanawasa was the best president Zambia has had since Independence because he did not make popular pronouncements just to please the crowds. Sata, too, speaks the truth and he is not afraid of anyone. I wish him a quick recovery so that he makes us wake up from our deep slumber. We are too much dependent on government favors. Yes, the government has the duty to help us but you can’t always be crying to the government.
I agree 100% with the President,as matter of fact we should change our attitude, instead we should think of what we can do for Zambia ,not what Zambia can do for us.
I appreciate the free education i benefited from grade 1 in 1976 to CBU IN 1995 and i want to pay back in a small way.First and foremost i plan to contribute to the development of forensic accounting in Zambia ,secondry my DBA research will be sole dedicated to Zambia, trying to find way we can improve management of corruption.
Many ways Zambians can contribute for example owning businesses.
You Zambians in Botswana should be ashamed of yourselves, in all honesty how do you elect such a useless chairman to represent you, who can’t even host a meeting properly, how do start introductions with demands. No wonder he was labelled a MMD cadre. What happened to making your guests feel welcome.
The calibre of questions is even more disgraceful from so called professionals, you have been infected by Tswana sleeping sickness it has made you very slow upstairs.
All of you supporting this are talking because you have jobs. How many graduates do we have who have no jobs and imagine the statistics of the unemployed if all those abroad came back home. All the jobs are being given to the old, older and oldest, the recycled MDs, Commissioners and so on while a fresh graduate stays home or roams the streets. “Pack your bags and come back home, “CAN’T NEVER”!
ZACOBO good job ! finally only 2000 of you managed to kill UKwa something 13 million Zambians failed to do in 6 months.
We don’t always get educated to be employed alone. We also get educated to become employers. What happens when you retire? Do you expect others to feed you? Wake up, there are a lot of oppotunities in Zambia. I never targeted to be employed from as early as grade nine.
To be Honest, I support my President on this point. Maybe the communication model, but it is true that Doctors, Nurses, Enginears are leaving Zambia for several reasonsnot only employment, some it was security in those days of one party state.etc,Qualified people aslo need to feed themselves with good governance, if they feel there is nothing coming on the plate, they live for better service in exchange for nshipa with nzoolo than all the time nsima with chisese
BRAVO, to fellow zambians in Botswana. Dispite the Coobra spitting vernom you stood up to its face and kept hammering it on the head. Muli baume sana! You told the Cobra what your concerns are. Now let him deal with that. I really believe your voices are still ringing in his ears wherever he is. Bravo brothers for standing your ground!
“Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Given Lubinda challenged Zambians in Botswana to state for the record how many relatives they have taken to live with them in Botswana, in order to improve their lives. Responses to this question were elusive”. Honestly Given Lubinda, what kind of Foreign Minister is this who does not know that you cannot take your relations to Botswana or any foreign land as if you are shifting from Lusaka to Mumbwa within Zambia. Don’t you know about Visas, Work Permits or Residence permits? But these comedian ministers, awe mwandini!
According to the president’s speech: “We have about 2000 Zambians in Botswana but tonight only 100 have attended the meeting”. And according to Anthony Mukwita alias state media: “Mr Mweendo’s speech, which often digressed………before President Sata decided that ………and asked the more than 2,000 Zambians to ask questions….”. Clearly, Mukwita is telling lies about the number of Zambians that attended the meeting, therefore we can conclude that the rest of his article are lies as usual. Therefore I prefer the earlier private version of the story.
Could we have the Africa cup of nations if some our players were not playing in other Countries? Interesting thought.
So much has been said about Sata and what he said, I have just been a video of what happened and it is the opposite of what has been written here. Lets get facts 1st guys before we post anything here.
Sata was right and he never insulted anyone.
The explanation that # 81 has given makes a lot of sense as to what transpired. Too many yesmen and too few advisors. The King (Cobra) had to go to Gabarone to realise he had no clothes!!
I have an MP4 of the recorded meeting: [email protected]
So create a new account and send me, I will forward you it, and you wull realise the truth.
Truth is that there is too much pomposity by some Zambians who go outside the country. I have also heard that during the Independence day, they ask for free drinks and food from the high commissions or embassies when at home there are a lot of Zambians suffering. I think its good that Sata pounced on them. Just because you have taken yourself abroad does not mean you are entitled to free things. I thought you went for greener pastures! What has happened to the greener pasture? Has it suddenly turned brown? Just come back we suffer together instead of asking for favors which you don’t deserve.
wed ba kateka, tell them more. we have all gone abroad for education but we are back to our mother zambia. shame guys
am now we are happy with the state media. its representing the people now. ha ha ha
I dont him after all he is not educated so he does not understand the agony of going to school and after all that he wants someone to be paid peanuts for what?
on second thought, i think he was not feeling well when he said all he said. Its a pity
Truth hurts indeed. get the sense frm HE. Most of you guys hurting now are even worried of buying a ticket home coz ‘it costs’. You do’nt own a home and worse you do’nt have ‘family’ back home coz hey there are so demanding. So when you hit the diminishing returns curve, you scared of home coz you just gonna be a ‘john solye ubwali’ over here. Take Micheals words with a pinch of sugar. You’ll c the wisdom, or else a-phili anabwela awaits you.
I meant i dont blame him. its not his fault
I for one will not come back. I am confronted and enjoying life. I would rather die in the old home for the aged then go back to Armagedon. Over my dead body:d
I must say that the president had a point but because of what he is said plainly.. The message is that citizens is diaspora can contribute hugely to their country.. example India… Diasporas are an important asset to their country of origin thus it is ideal to create an environment that encourages millions of dollars held abroad back home…. Bill gates said Africans abroad have millions of their dollars held abroad which money could contribute wisely to Africa.. However the president message is also just saying with patriotism there is still a lot you can do back home even in the current status.. I spent time abroad myself and managed to built houses back home though the maney I was getting was not that mush..THE PRESIDENT IS NOT SAYING LEAVE YO JOBS AND BACK… INDIA CHINA DOES NOT ASK
#118 Skype, donchi kubebas will claim that they have seen the video and know the truth of what happened, they duped us once and that is enough, never again.
What is the argument all about?
@ #10 I think you are one of those who cannot accept hitherto that Sata is the republican president. You prefer to call him Ukwa, well and good because at least Ukwa has a sence of humour to make us laugh while the leader of the party you support is ever sad and looks like a wizard and I doubt if he will ever rule Zambia. You are very petty, grow up!
#79 you condition is simple- schizophrenia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aside the lack of diplomacy on HE.. We need commitment from both Government of the day and Diaspora to contribute to our country’s development… Like the case with INDIA.. The president is not saying you quit jobs and rush back home!!!! Patriotism is key because otherwise why would one be thing of coming home if they are comfortable where they are? It is also a duty of the Gov to encourage Diasporas to invest back home not necessarily giving loans etc but by having implementable policies that would encourage investment of the so called Diaspora back home in Zambia.!!
Let discuss issues maturely and positively. Let us not be too emotional but rather be rational in our debates… Let us be realistic and educate one another, Agree to disagree at least in a dignified manner and not in the manner we castigating and calling names with fake identities….!!! We should not be cowards and say all sorts of things for the fan of it… Lets get serious folks and develop our country!!! We have everything here.. As a matter of fact Zambia is not as poor as people put it….. Move across Africa and you will tell me.!! I have been there!!! We are on the right track .. We should pick from where MMD left economically and we can get there!!!!. Politically we are also not bad….. We need UPND, MMD, and PF
If they are not special, why did he meet them? How often does he get Zambians back home in a hall to ask him questions? The fact that the whole President goes to these Zambians in the diaspora proves that there IS something special about them. But, I for one have never attended these silly meetings.
Asking for access to for poor Zambian CEEC money to set up business in rich Botswana. What some queer/lame thinking!!!
I agree it does not make so much make sense to ask CEEC money to be invested in Botswana because indirectly then you are empowering another country depending on the way you look at it.. However as a the Head of State.. He should have used best wisdom to answer. I, am saying this on the assumption that it really transpired as reported (Because the report on this electronic media can also be propaganda for the opposition) There is need to compare source.. However knowing HE ….no brake.. Question is ? is it the type of a person or given time he will improve in this area!!
@57, muzambia:
I just couldn’t resist saying something about you statement. You claim to be widely traveled, but you don’t seem to know the kind of jobs these same Filipinos do abroad for them to be able to send money back home. Filipinos, Mexicans, Chines, Indians, Russians, Guatemalans, etc, do just about the same jobs that Zambians, Nigerians, Ghanians, Kenyans, Zimbabweans, and so forth, do out here in the diaspora. But do you know what the difference between some of these Nationalities and Zambians abroad is?! Yes, the kind of support they get from their home governments compared to what we Zambians abroad get from our govt. These other govts work hard to facilitate meaningful entrepreneurship by their citizens living abroad to engage in back home. That’s the big difference!
cont..137 In Zambia, even getting your travel documents (renew your passport) is a hassle, talking to your foreign mission is almost an impossibility. And if you do, no one at these missions seem to have answers to even the simplest of questions. They will run you in circles, bumping you from one ***** to the next. Sometimes you even wonder how they ended up at these missions as ambassadors or proxies representing our country. And most of their wed sites are a joke. Even obtaining simple forms that can just be printed off the website, you have to contact some relative in Zambia to send you copies, and this is after bribing some lowly civil servant to get the damn forms—and I am speaking from experience. Now tell me what meaningful business can flow out of such an archaic system?!
cont…from 138:
This behavior of trying to milk Zambians by demanding ridiculously high fees/taxes and bribes have to be dealt with by our govt before any meaningful investments can be had from Zambians living abroad.
If you show up at the airport in Zambia with a handful of capital goods, you get taxed to your eye balls. Even goods that have nothing in the way of affecting the local market. For instance, last time I checked no company in Zambia produces computers, but show up with an extra computer or two and you will pay throw your nose in taxes. These are things, simple as they may seem, but hinder and discourage a lot of Zambians abroad to do business back home.
cont…from 139:
Sata as president should concentrate on improving the business environment for us not-so-rich Zambians abroad but want to start up small business ventures back home. Sure, multinational corporations can afford a bribe here and there, or pay a little more in taxes (which in most cases are waved), but such things are a big impediment to most individual Zambians working or living abroad and would love to start a small business that can employ 5, 7 or 10 people.
cont…from 140:
And there are business logistics unique to Zambian citizens living abroad when it comes to engaging in business ventures back home. The govt will do better to acknowledge this fact and sit down with relevant organizations or individuals who can help identify the mechanisms crucial to supporting this segment of the Zambian population to do even better than just sending money back to their relatives for school fees, food, medicines, rent, and so forth. Telling people to simply pack up their bags and head home when you have nothing ready for them to do is myopic and rediculous!
conti…from 141:
Countries that have gained so much from their citizens living and working abroad are those that have made some serious inroads in facilitating the easy movement/travel of their people in the diaspora. Starting with such basic things as improvements in the speed and manner passports, travel papers, and visas are processed will go a long way. Pretending that all is well, or assuming Zambians abroad are simply unpatriotic and deserves no or very little incentives to investment back home is counterproductive and benefits no one.
conti….from 142:
Take your time to keenly listen to what Zambians living abroad having been crying about for so long. Instead of looking at us with suspicion and a bit of scorn! We love Zambia just as much as our brothers and sisters who have remained in Zambia. Help us help our motherland. And starts with a simple clean up of how things are done at the govt level. Continuing to employ unqualified cadres for govt jobs they barely understand will never see Zambia progress. Surely, you do not expect anyone to engage in meaningful business ventures if they have to wait for their passport renewals (for instant) for a month, six months, a year (if you are lucky), and some cases several years! And your foreign missions out here are pathetic—to say the least!!!
Why is that Zambians at home have a huge problem with those in Diaspora? Shame arent we all Zambians? Thats is why Zambia is still underdeveloped. Zambians cant work together to develop the country. I will stay put. Die if you dont like my idea. The President is just trying to save his term
good reporting.
Last year zambians in Diaspora sent $ 500 milion, to families home. Same amount that the British govt donated to Zambia over three years. if we go back home thast money will not come. My kids have good eduCation and health care free of corruption. I belong here. As much as I love my country I would rather die here. I spent the first 22 yrs of life living in poverty with no future. I sat on woods in school, I worked hard to be where I am, amy my kids won’t have to go through what I went through.
Divergent views are always percived to be horboured by people in opposition we have a problem ,it is a human rights to stay anywere we want to and still bring development to our motherland as a father of the nation MCS needs to be impatial he is no longer in opposition to be uttering anything that cames to his head thier could have been lots of sense from the tswana base zedians but you can not just water everything like that.he needs to display mature leadership but i also think the guy that presented the speach was misplace
THE TRUTH PAINS, Well Done Mr President Tell them the Truth. I am sure most Zambians in Botswana were drizzled. that’s cobra for you. He tells it straight as it is. ZAMBIANS LIKE COMPAINING WITH NOTHING TO OFFER. Go back home get involved and don’t talk nonsense. Iam Zambian in Diaspora but help to develop my lovely country. Be part of the solution than just condemn. Together we can achieve a lot. WELL DONE MR PRESIDENT
Zambia has a leadership crisis not shortage of resources. Unfortunately this is a typical display of what our problem is. Asking about something does not mean you want it for free, in any case, for a country with 762,000sqr KM land and 12 M people, a clear plan to empower Zambians with land is not there. We want to catch the vision and pursue the price.
GOVERNMENT PROTECTS THE CRIMINALS THAT HAVE STOLEN WHAT MY FAMILY INCLUDING MYSELF SPENT OUR LIVES WORKING FOR ALL BECAUSE CERTAIN MINISTERS AND JUDGES DON’T WANT TO BE LABELLED THIEVES. WHAT LIFE DOES SATA THINK HE CAN OFFER PEOPLE? A LIFE OF SUFFERING LIKE HE AND HIS CORRUPT MINISTERS HAVE INFLICTED ON SO MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE? EVERY HUMAN BEING HAS A RIGHT TO A DECENT LIFE AND SATA IS IN A POSITION TO DELIVER JUSTICE TO MILLIONS BUT HE REFUSES – WHY? JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER REGARDLESS OF WHAT HE SAYS.
I advocated for change but not this change where the president has no scooby doo of how to run the country he is a novice, to qualify my state these are the things that have happened within a short period of his being in power;
1. He promised to turn things around in 90 days – that is not realistic only a fool can promise this
2. lack of communication between the president and his ministers- always conflicting statements 3. He claimed there was fake money in circulation- this has not been substantiated 4 Setting up commission of enquiry in an effort to sort out MMD 5 Commenting on petty issues- the president should be above all this. 6 Trying to eliminate the opposition. Sata needs to behave as a leader
Sata is in the diaspora himself right now seeking medical treatment. Why did he leave Zambian hospitals? Worse still the wife is a Zambian medical doctor. Why couldnt she attend to him? Shame!
SATA reminds me of Kaunda during his last days in state hse
I dont even think of coming back to Zambia. Iam now a citizen of this country after leaving Zambia some twenty years ago. When i read the article above i wondered what the president was aiming for. Iam mindful of countries that export knowledge in form of expertriates. These pipo send back money to their relatives and friends. I do the same now and again. But reading between the lines of all these articles i saw the problem. The presidential entourage was angered right from the word go and went all out to hit back. Mr. Sata said alot about proffessionals but Botswana being close to zambia i think the president should have rebuked those without papers , like , you thieves who are busy stealing from batwanas, you think zambians no longer have property for you to steal.
People should stop the dependency syndrome. These people were being selfish. They should look at what they can offer and not the other way round.
Even when opportunities are opening up here and there they still want spoon feeding.Work hard and do not just look at being employed by some organization.
He just described what most people are and they got hurt.
IT IS STUPID TO THINK THAT BEING IN DIASPORA IS SOMETHING SPECIAL.
TO THINK THAT YOU WILL BE TREATED SPECIAL.TO THINK THAT YOU ARE MORE CIVILIZED.
THESE PEOPLE FAILED TO BRING OUT REAL ISSUES BUT INSTEAD THEY LOOKED AT WHAT ONLY WILL BENEFIT THEMSELVES.THAT IS ALMOST THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SELFISHNESS.
I AM IN ZAMBIA DOING BETTER THAN MOST OF THESE PEOPLE BECAUSE I WORK HARD BOTH IN MY EMPLOYMENT AND IN MY BUSINESSES.
I LOVE MY PEOPLE AND MY COUNTRY.IF I LIVED ABROAD I WOULD INVEST BACK HOME BECAUSE OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE AND GROWING AND WOULD BENEFIT MY ZAMBIA.
Zambians in the diaspora are Zambians who are very hard-working and did not wait for failed political leaders to provide them with nothing to survive in their own country. The recycled political leaders have failed to provide basic services including such things like pension. How can such people provide employment when their option is to make begging to run the country an industry? Zambians in Zambia are made to seek solutions from leaders that do not even have a vision for the country and spend their time in corrupt practices. Selling salaula, street vending are the solutions? They even fail to provide mere water to their people!! Patrotism? Very laughable jokers! Hero-worshipping thieves and adulterous pea-brain failed leaders?

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found
a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.”
She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab
inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I
know this is totally off topic but I had to
tell someone!
