ENERGY, Mines and Water Development Minister Chris Yaluma yesterday flagged off five tankers carrying fuel to Malawi as contributions towards the funeral of the late Dr Bingu Wa Mutharika.
Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia David Bandawe who witnessed the flagging off, said the burial for the late president remains Monday
April 23 at his farm, Ndanda in Blantyre.
“This flagging off being witnessed today is a mere donation towards the funeral arrangements of the deceased president. Yesterday 15
fuel tankers left and would reach Malawi by today morning,” Mr Yaluma said.
The minister said the exercise would take about a week to complete and would involve 50 tankers.
He said the Government would take full responsibility of all logistics and payments which would be incurred in the process.
“The Government is paying US$150 per tonne per kilometre, we have managed to clinch this cheaper source,” Mr Yaluma said.
Mr Bandawe thanked the Zambian Government for the donation, saying his country was faced with a serious shortage of fuel.
He said the donation symbolised the cordial relationship Zambia had with Malawi.

Malawi has a fuel shortage not money shortage. Zambia would have instead sold malawi the fuel rather than donating. Will malawi in turn donate this fuel to its citizens or will they sell it??? If they sell it, they will have more than 100% profit(despite there being no capital invested)

I think $150 per tonne per Kilometer is not right. it would be too expensive. those trucks are 30 tonnes each. so you tell me that to move one truck just for a kilometer you would pay $4,500? at the current rate, that is ZMK 23,400,000 !!!! reporters please verify. What is the distance to Malawi from Lusaka? if it is a 1000KM are you telling me that we are going to pay 23 Billion per truck on transportation? multiply by 50 tankers? that is ZMK1 trillion. This petrol has not been donated. These criminals have stolen it from Zambians. It is going to be sold in Malawi. Michael and his friends will pocket the money.
