GOVERNMENT has finally issued a mining licence to Dangote Industries Limited, a Nigerian multinational investor which is constructing a US$500 million cement plant in Masaiti district,Copperbelt Province.
Once the company starts production, it is expected to produce 3,500 tonnes of cement per day.
Dangote Industries Limited general manager Vivek Heblikar says the company was issued a certificate last week for their economic activities in Zambia.
Mr Heblikar confirmed the development in an interview in Ndola yesterday.
“We have been issued with a certificate which will comprise a lot of licences, as well as for our mining activities at the cement plant under construction in Masaiti,” he said.
Mr Heblikar expressed happiness towards government’s gesture to issue the certificate to the Nigerian conglomerate company.
He said works at the site were going on well, adding that the plant is likely to be completed on schedule.
“I’m not a prophet, but If all goes well as per company programme, the cement plant will be completed on time,” he said.
The plant will be constructed in three phases with the first phase expected to be completed in 2013.
Mr Heblikar said Sinoma Engineering Company of China has been contracted to build a modern cement plant.
The construction company is also expected to construct houses for 30 families that have been relocated from the construction site to Lupiya area in Chief Chiwala’s chiefdom.
In the first phase, 18 families would be relocated to the named area and thereafter another 12 families would follow.
Earlier, Mr Heblikar said the company could not commence compensating the displaced 30 families due to lack of a mining licence.
Dangote Industries is the third cement plant to be established in Zambia, from Larfage and Zambezi Portland Cement, a local company that broke the monopoly in the cement manufacturing sector in Zambia.
Zambezi Portland Cement and Larfage cement plants are all located in Masaiti district on the Copperbelt.

It was necessary to ensure they are genuine investors. Some Nigerians can be very slippery crooks as the whole world knows.
Get yourn facts right. Lafarge plant is in Chilanga south of Lusaka while zambezi is in Ndola.
i hope those nigerians wont bring in crook business here in zambia especially in already crooked cement
For your information Mr Dangote is the richest black person in the world.With assets worth $11.2 billion ,he is the 76th richest person in the world.
We should be happy that a fellow African has invested half a billion dollars in our country.At least we don’t have to rely on westerners for FDI.
So what, if he is the richest black person in the world? We don’t know how he aquired his wealth. There’s need to be cautious. Nigeria is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. We don’t that spilling over to our country.

I was very critical of Billionaire Mr Dangota’s investing in this sector 12 months ago and I am still opposed to it…we already have Zambezi Portland Cement and Larfage cement (formerly Chilanga Cement Plc) plants in the selfsame locality producing cement and cement clinker. Larfage largest customer is the mining industry, KCM and MCM; it exports cement and cement clinker to nearby countries, including DRC, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. We have new mines and construction boom in the NW province.
Competition is good but not at the expense of local industry, what innovations is Dangote bringing apart from undercutting local business.
