Wife to Zambia’s gallant freedom fighter, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe says the death of Mama Betty Kaunda is a lesson to all the couples that there is need to persevere in marriage.

Speaking in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today, Mrs Chilufya Kapwepwe said people should learn something from the Kaundas how they lived as a wife and a husband.

Mrs Kapwepwe said Mama Betty Kaunda passed through difficult times especially during the liberation time but managed to put together the family and loved her husband even more.

She said Mama Betty Kaunda contributed greatly to Zambia’s struggle for independence adding that this is the reason why she was known by many people as Mama Betty Kaunda, the mother of the nation.

“Mama Betty Kaunda persevered during the liberation time and after independence because she was a committed woman and mother with a heart for her family and mankind in general” said Mrs Kapwepwe.

Mrs Kapwepwe said the services of Mama Betty Kaunda will be missed by many people because she did touched many lives.

Mrs Kapwepwe prayed to God to give the Kaunda family comfort during this trying moment.

And Dr Kenneth Kaunda’ s nephew, David Kaunda said the decision to burry Betty Kaunda at Lubwa mission is a welcome move because that is what the family back home wanted.

Mr Kaunda told ZANIS at Shambalakale farm today that the Kaunda family wants to be buried in Chinsali, their native place.

He also wished the first republican president quick recovery so that his wife can finally be put to rest.

The burial of Mama Betty Kaunda who died on Wednesday last week in Harare, Zimbabwe whilst visting her daughter has been postponed because of the poor health of the first republican President Dr Kaunda.

The burial of Mama Betty Kaunda, 84, is expected to take place at Lubwa mission in Chinsali district of Muchinga Province on a date to be announced soon.

In confirming the postponement of the burial of Mama Betty Kaunda, Muchinga Province Minister Malozo Sichone advised all the mourners who were planning to travel to Chinsali to wait until Cabinet Office advises on the new burial date.

Mr Sichone also advised the mourners to ensure that they carry enough stocks of fuel because there is no filling station in Chinsali and that the area has also inadequate lodges and guests houses and the mourners should either spend their night in Mpika or Isoka.

Mama Betty Kaunda leaves behind 8 children, 30 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

    • With all the education you claim to have u have shown a part of you that is deeply rooted with ignorance. You also have no respect. Ever heard the expression money can’t buy you class. No matter how much you study, you will always remain to be a common ignorant girl.  You have nothing nice to say about Zambia and you have just insulted and ridiculed a very respectful woman. Your blogs are boastful and self conceited. You are nothing special or unique. You have a lot to learn about life. Humble yourself

    • Mushota, just when we commended you that you were growing up by your past immediate comments, marginally albeit you disappoint us by being uncouth towards elders. How can, at your age, insult mama Kapwepwe. Kanshi where is your uncle who blasted you on the net last time? Your parents should make arrangements to take you to alangizi. Wali kwata ichiwa! You are possessed you ingrate! You are a waste of sp…… I am sorry forgive me! i am stammering

  4. personally i think cremation is more pragmatic, graveyards take up too much space that can be usefull for people still alive and those yet to be born.

  5. What is wrong with the zambia of today.Henostly how can u allow offsprings like @senda 2 speak ill of Great women like mama kapwepwe.Iam appealing 2 the pipo in the education sector 2 start teaching abt freedom fighters all thoz that fought 4 our independence. Can u imagine,Christopher colombus is mo famous than Mama Julia Chikamonaka.I say, this is brain wash education. Its tym we start appreciating our own history.

  6. Sometimes if you don’t have anything to say or write its better to keep quiet coz wisdom resides with those who have learnt to discern what is right & wrong.

  7. This is history being given the headlines instead of the usual party (petty) politics!
This is a time for the young generation to learn more about the Kaunda family, the pre-independence struggles, the post independence family and KK’s good friends, comrades and associates in the struggle like Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe.
Wonderful to bring in Kapwepwe’s name.
I can picture KK and Kapwepwe in those wonderful colourful chitenges wrapped round their shoulders. May the great names not be forgotten!
May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
Lusaka Times on this one I give you 100%. No I give you 99% as we are told that it is not possible to get 100% when marking exam papers.

  9. Some marriages need to be ended especially if there is abuse na bucilalelale. Too many innocent women have died from AIDS.

Mama Betty persevered because she had a good man.

    • I don’t blame you for not publishing your wehgit for the world to see. Some of us can’t even be honest to ourselves about our wehgit. It’s brave enough to list the wehgit lost.Congratulations on the 15 pounds so far. We are about at the same level. I’ve been dieting and exercising like crazy but seem to fall off the wagon every weekend. It’s getting a little better with each attempt. Brian D. Hawkins s last blog ..

  10. we have lost the mother of zambia, jokes and politics aside.Let’s mourn her in harmony.mam RIP .I wish the Kaunda family God’s guidance during this dark moment.

  11. I didn’t know Mrs. Kapwepwe was around. Please let these freedom fighters give us some flashbacks. It is sad that we never regularly used to hear from Mama Betty and the Mama Kankasas of this world! Come on journalists please do your jobs instead of covering some political circus going on now!

  12. Yes KK should consider remarrying mama Kapwepwe if he is still in marriage mood just as i am in love with Mulenga Kapwepwe . Given a chance i would not hesitate , the only problem is i’m as wealth as she would fathom believe that girl like her mother will age and die beautiful in fact ka Mushota cannot be compared to either of them hence the rotten utterances from her. Waiting to here from Mulenga about my proposal or shall i say my wish .
