The World Bank in Zambia has said that it is not aware of reports indicating that effective next year, it will stop offering budgetary support to the country following its graduation from lower income nation to a lower middle income country.
Finance Deputy Minister Miles Sampa is quoted in some sections of the media saying that the World Bank has indicated to stop offering budgetary support.
But World Bank Country Director Kundhavi Kadiresan has said that she is not aware of such developments stating that the bank will continue to be engaged in Zambia.
Ms. Kadiresan said that Zambia is still a low middle income country and is still eligible for concessional loans.
She told journalists in Lusaka today that her office is currently in talks with the Government to see how best it can help in financing the 2013 national budget.
Ms. Kadiresan said that once the talks are concluded, the World Bank will base its support on key policy priorities.

The Director is playing politics. “Being engaged” is not the same as “halting budgetary support”. Of course you can still stay engaged without the traditional base. Namibia has for a long time been battling to get into some of the poverty reduction facility ever since they were declared a low middle income country. Before we lambast Sampa, we can look to their (Namibia) experience despite still having World Bank and IMF “engagement”…
Anyway,Miles, you scored a headline as you wished Even a child knows that such nationak policy matters would have been pronounced by the Minister of Finance not a kaponya like miles Sampa.
Can the DPP please prosecute Sampa for making a more alarming statement than HH.
You guys Miles is telling the truth.He hit the nail on it’s head while the country director of IMF is being diplomatic.Zambians and Africans we need to wake up.IMF and world bank will only exist if there are poor countries to lend money and the fact that we can now go out there and borrow money through other sources is a concern to them because they are not going to dictate how we use the money like they used to do.Look at the maize subsidy issue,they want the country to stop the programme but the real issue is the way the programme has been managed.If it is managed well it can be very succefull.Developed countries used to do the same.
