Zambia is losing revenue from illegal cutting of trees. Mongu district forestry department confiscating timber from unlicensed dealers at Mongu central market during a market inspection exercise in Mongu

Over 50 timber employees and merchants today marched to the office of the District Commissioner, Joster Manjolo to express their displeasure with government on the abrupt suspension of timber harvesting in the country.

A group representative, Peter Yuvwenu from Han Tang Timber Company in Kaoma district complained that the sudden suspension of timber in the district will throw out many youths in the streets.

Mr Yuvwenu said that over 2,000 families are affected by the abrupt closure and requested the Patriotic Front government to consider lifting the suspension so that those who have already finished cutting should be allowed to transport their timber to various markets.

And Kaoma district Timber Association Chairperson Evans Muzala said that the suspension of timber operations has not come at a right time adding that in a democratic state like Zambia timber players were supposed to be consulted.

Mr Muzala said the PF government should serve the interests of all Zambians as it promised during the just ended tripartite elections as it was given the mandated to serve the majority poor Zambians.

He complained that considering the high unemployment rates in the country many people that were employed by timber companies would be injected in the streets with nothing to do as the closure is not intended at putting money in people’s pockets.

Mr Muzala said ways and means should be sought in order to have a permanent solution to the matter.

And addressing the timber employees and merchants from Sikale wood and Han Tang companies, Kaoma District Administrative Officer Siachibuye Mwanangombe requested them to remain calm as government was still seriously looking into their plight.

Mr Mwanangombe said government will come up with an amicable solution in order to resolve and protect them.

Last week government through the Minister of Lands and Natural resources suspended the cutting of timber in the country.

  1. This is no time for protest! It is time to be innovative! Start recycling the broken furniture and castaway wood back into usable and saleable stuff!  Why do we look at obstacles with fists!??

  2. If only Sata,Kabimba,GBM and Sakeni used malasha to prepare their nshima then maybe they’d have a heart for the poor zambian. But as things stand they’ve never used malasha in their life or known how it is to work in a timber yard so they care less about this abrupt ban.

  3. Dear commenter (2). We need to give credit to GRZ for this move and not all that Government does is wrong. Consider this, the country losses about 300,000 hactares of forests through deforestation annually and yet not efforts are being done to restock these forests. Mind that we might face serious consequences of desertification 100 years from now if we do not regulate timber harvesting. GRZ simply wants to put in modalities that will ensure sustainable timber harvesting and in the long run ensure that natural timber stands remain viable. Further, there is too much corruption in the way timber is harvested thereby rendering the forest sector unappreciated in contributing towards the national treasury. Let GRZ clean this system of timber selling period!!!!

  4. This is the difference between MMD and PF, MMD are a ”every thing is for sale ” in Zambia while PF even if they lose revenues, have the long term interest of the country at heart.
Now what will those loggers do who bribed MMD to cut down trees for export do ??

  6. One of the biggest mistakes people make when buying blood pressure monitors is buying the wrong instrument. That’s why a lot of people get frustrated and annoyed in just a matter of weeks of use.

  7. Hello, My name is George, and I’m presenting a wood importer looking for a supplier for kosso wood / Guibourtia spp from your country. Kindly advise if you can supply the woods we need. Initially we are going to import 2 or 4 containers. If prices and quality are good, we will buy regularly more than 30 containers every month.

If you need any further information, please feel free to let me know.

    best regards
    George
