Nonde’s sentiments on Maureen anger some women

Share

Scores of women today staged a protest in Lusaka over Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) president, Joyce Nonde’s remarks over the former First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa’s rejection of a house that the government offered to rent for her.

The visibly angry women expressed their displeasure over Nonde’s sentiments that the former First Lady should not reject the house because government was only following the law.

The women added that it was too early to criticize the former First Lady, noting that she was still mourning her husband’s death.

Mrs Edith Mataka Nkoma, who was representing the women, noted that Ms Nonde should stop frustrating the former First Lady and her family as they were still in grief.

Ms Nkoma, who is also a widow, noted that death is something that is painful, hence there is need for Ms Nonde to respect Mrs Mwanawasa, saying that if she had any problem with Maureen, she could have approached her instead of attacking her through the papers which she said was sending a bad picture to the children.

Ms Nkoma noted that Mrs Mwananwasa is a Zambian and has the right to express herself, as her children were brought up in a different environment and she needs to keep her children in a better environment.

She further urged all Zambians to look back and reflect on Mrs Mwanawasa as still the mother for the nation, hence the need to respect her as she did not choose for her husband to die.

And Ms Carolyn Chanda urged Ms Nonde to mind her own business and not to criticize Mrs Mwanawasa in the papers.

Ms Chanda noted that Ms Nonde is also a married woman and she will also face some challenges in a home.

The women’s protest follows a comment that was made by Ms Nonde in today’s The Post News papers, saying that the former First Lady should not reject a house that government offered to rent for her in Roma township because government was following the law.

  1. I can not expect to live in a democracy l am not prepared to do the work of being a citizen-keep it up Nonde

  2. I can not expect to live in a democracy if l am not prepared to do the work of being a citizen

  3. This is just a battle of Lusaka women’s egos at play here. I will not get involved and comment. I expect Nonde to also organise her group to match in solidarity with her. Guys just stay out of this one.

  4. These women probably expect some sympathy themselves from Maureen with a chance of some brown envelopes. The Govt obviously thought the house was condusive for Maureen prior to proposing that they rent it for her.
If Maureen is truly generous as she was purporting to be when she was still in State House, the best she could have done is not even accept that the govt rents a house for her and instead use the funds meant for the rentals on some valnerable homeless children currently roming our streets.
Who doesnt know she has some modern houses for herself (with her late husband-MHSRIP) all over Lusaka???
Nonde, forget what these women are saying – you’re doing a great job!

  5. Maureen has the right to reject the house that was offered to her if she didn’t find it suitable especially that it was

  6. thats being greedy she expected a diplomatic post RB doesnt owe her anything her husband was just like any other worker who upon death he gets his dues moreover they have several modern houses in lusaka especially that one at the corner of KUDU ROAD thatz just interimbut too much ego

  7. Maureen has the right to reject the house that was offered to her if she didn’t find it suitable especially that it was occupied by someone else before her & it was renovated in a rush.I believe it’s the house formerly occupied by the Late Ugandan leader Milton Obote.
Maureen & her late husband own & have always occupied proper houses even before going to State House but most of them are now occupied by tenants who have paid rentals in advance & i believe it’s on long lease so she is is right to be concerned about where she will be accomodated after all it takes our govt more than 10 yrs to rehouse former Presidents. How long has it taken govt to finally hand over Kaunda’s house?

  8. #7 I totally agree with you. This is a very private matter & civic leaders in Zambia try to be vocal for nothing. The Post too is becoming a pain in the backside,it’s seems it’s not just credibility they have lost this year, they have lost direction, they think they are a hot gossip paper.

  9. who are these women hope they are not mmd supporters Nonde is jst express her views thats why these apamwambas take us for granted coz they think the public will protest any time they air their grivancesmeanwhile the same women protesting live in kanyama

  10. Come on you ladies. You boost of being democractic and yet when someone speaks their mind you rush to blame them. I know you want some ngwee from the former first lady. let us not protest for nothing, there are many of our children who need proper care and educaton but end up in the streets. let democracy prevail. Or do you believe too that poverty is our way of life…. wake up

  11. Who is Jotce Nonde’s husband? I Joyce Nonde’s remarks are off target and she should concentrate on what she voted for. Why attacking an individual who is not even a memebr of her organisation? I am sure Maureen wll one day answer her back. Maureen has publicly said that she would not accept any diplomatic job so there is no need for someone to say Maureen thought Nyama Soya was to give her a diplomatic post.

  12. #10 civic leaders are just alttlebit more informed and by the way Nonde knows and understands the law better than those women who just talk from without.its tax payers money when her husband was in power they deprived others now its her time, we should not complain when it suits us but make zambia a happy country for not selective individauls. thats how this country will develop,im sure all her bululus who moved to plot one have to find somewhere to go now.He is not the first to die their so many who have died and have not been given benefits the same aplys to all politicians.they should not wait until they are in the situiation to fight to change it.thats hypocricy

  13. bana mayo imwe, you don’t have anything to do??? Seems so to me. Are you Maureen’s “sympatheizers” or “disciples”??? Shoo!!! this is really a boring story. I really don’t even think if these bana mayo demonstrating in the streets are going to read this article. I can’t really make sense of this story- is it political, rhetorical, cultural, or what??? What is this? I guess BBC or CNN aren’t there to take pictures of these people- they might embaras us mwe!!!

  14. Hey Ms Nonde I like your looks. You appear to be a firm lady.Maureen shouldn’t be funny she has houses in Lusaka & other towns. If she is not greedy she could have said no thats to govt’s offer but bcoz she feels more Zambian than the 12million Zambians she can even have guts to choose when just a few Kilometers away people in Mazyopa are sleeping in tents. This is why we are poor, coz we have misplaced priolities. & greedy people like Maureen. Those woman supporting her are a danger to our development. This is why we needed a firm leader like Sata.Ba RB is still behaving as if he owes her anything

  15. Ba Nonde plz educate those women- yourself you sound educated and reasonable. Bana mayo imwe twapapata, think and stop those funny things of yours. Awe mwandini!!! iyeh!

  16. there is lack on Entertainment for women. thats shows you the degree of ignorance, they should start night school like KK time. so those older pipo ashamed to go to school with their children can go in the nihgt

  17. What i know is that Joyce Nonde is not married. 2)dont insult Maureen over the house. even you if you make enough money during your working life it does not mean that your company will not pay you your benefits.

  18. What do you mean when you say that this is a private matter? That house which wil be occupied by Maureen, the rentals wil be paid by the govornment. And where does the government get the money?is it not my tax and yours? So what do you mean by saying private matter? Is Roma a shant place like chaisa or kanyama for her to say the environment is not good.Nonde is right, can we be seriousy plz.

  19. #14 Civic leaders are more informed about what & more informed than who? The protesters

You are right about this ”He is not the first to die their so many who have died and have not been given benefits the same aplys to all politicians.they should not wait until they are in the situiation to fight to change it.thats hypocricy” but this is crap (its tax payers money when her husband was in power they deprived others now its her time)
Which many bululus were at plot one apart from the few she already stayed with before moving to State House. Most of those were trusted workers who have been with the Mwanawasa’s for years apart from one who was fired shortly b4 moving to Plot 1 in 2001.

  20. imwe ba Kamunga (Comment #19)sometimes mule bako serious. I mean, you really sound ignorant- Nonde’s status isn’t the issue of discussion here- its all about ba Maureen and the house. That’s why you fail exams- you answer what is not asked. Read the story again- are you one of those women??? You seem to flow in their arguments (Oh sorry!- “argument” sounds more academic- I meant “quarrels”- full of ignorance). Ms Nonde good job- fix them. You’re one of the people we need in gov’t. Congrats.

  23. Ba Ofbah nabeve awe mwe! the second last para in the story quotes one of the women as saying Nonde has a husband. i was clarifying that. LT should not mislead people. Have you seen Kashimani’s comment? part of it is based on that premise so? i was just correcting sir! needless to mention that it is difficult to react to a husbands death if you dont have one.

  24. this is petty handbags and heels argument can LT please bring some interesting political news i.e whats the story with the new constitution anything but this! maybe u can even just put a photo of Joyce Nonde’s secret hubby (SATA) and then we can debate about how ugly he is.

  25. u can t force a goat to drink amenshi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!let her go back to the farm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. thats sheer greed and insensitivity i dont expect to get that from a self respecting woman of her caliber ,i think as zambians let us learn to cultivate a culture of support .

  27. Imwe ba kamunga (Comment 26), you’re quoting ba Ms Chanda- do you know her??? better you don’t. Don’t follow her, you’ll be lost. Anyway, I’m not a Sata Fan- just clarify myself. These politics of ours are boring- just to be honest with you.

  28. These women are totally at the verge of insanity to wade the streets of LSK chanting inane slogans. The most part of the population do not even have decent housing, and Snobbish Maureen has the audacity to handpick plush houses…Goodness Gracious, I’m at pains when I see those women in blissful ignorance…BRAVO NONDE!! The women shud shut up abt the grief and not vilify Nonde…She’s got better brain than all of them put together…

  29. Imwe ba Joyce Nonde (#24, 25), are you okay upstairs??? how can you give us such a long… Whatever! Plz we don’t have time to read such- I really don’t know if there’re poems or what- plz spare your poems and give us the facts.

  30. Ofbah iwe taumfwa ayai? i am not qouting i am correcting what has been written! its in the story! my point is that journalists have a duty to verify simple facts as that. Joyce has had profiles done about her and these are in public domain.A reporter must know this. If its not a fact and you still want it in the story as a journalist you can even use the word ‘ALLEGED or CLAIMED e.g she ALLEGED or CLAIMED that Joyce has a husband.

  31. The post is what people call the Gutter press and they practice what is called yellow journalism. They think running a newspaper is the same as selling fritters or tomatoes. they have lost the class. we need another newspaper that is going to be neutral .

  32. Ok ba Kamunga (#37), we’ve heard thanks for the illustration- you’ve really made yourself clear, I was just more than bored to read the whole story. Thanks and God bless. We can now become a tag-team. ideal???

  33. Just wait you are going to see Morin’s true colors! May be she should just hitch-up with VJ and move to VJ’s digs if he has any!

  34. maureen! awee mwee! Roma is supposed to be one of the best places in Lusaka. As a Zambian i feel insultd that she can say she needs mordern accomodation beta than that in Roma. what more does she want? A mansion? Back to the farm indeed!!!!!

I wish Sata was presido, he wud have given her what a regular Zambian wud consider ‘lavish’ accomodation in George compound, and a pit latrine to make her MORE comfortable.

  35. #39, running a newspaper is business and no public service . The post has to report stories that attract and sell to the pipo otherwise all newspapers will be boring and useless like daily and times!

  36. she thinks those those staying mu ma compounds are happy??? okay!!! go on nu ku meka kwenu. Kuya fye ku farm and stop confusing people in the city.

  37. iwe joyce numba 33. wat support does she need from us?her hubby was presido not her! moreover his govt owayz delayd paying off beneficiaries, so she needs to be taught a lesson too

  38. Hi, I’m Ofbah, so which story are you reading??? I want to join you in with regards to comments- you’ve impressed me

  39. #44 you are wrong newspapers are much more than just about the bottom lines! much more than the profit. you can sell a newspaper by being factual and not being sensational or childish or worse still pornographic. Get a copy of a post newspaper during the days of the Robby Makai’s Jowie Mwiinga’s, Bright Mwape Mukalya nampito and others tell me if you can compare that to todays post.

  40. you pipo this woman has many houses she is insulting thoses that dont have find out how many she has just in PHI and that is supoes to help zambians have decent housing but those who already have want everythinhg to themselves, and the standard she wants is not available in lusaka.Roma is a good place even the rich bazungu of lusaka live there so where does she want to go. JUST PLAYING HARD

  41. My mother is a widow, my father serve government for 30 years as a lecturer in most of the trades training institutes in the country. A man with a BA from Canada, when he died my mum was give K2, 000, 000 in 1994, her income from government is K60, 000 today per month. My mum got something at least other have died without getting a ngwee. Were is justice in this world, others can even refuse a house in Roma residential area? I am a bit emotional, but cant say much now.

  42. Suppergal . i suspect she wants ku mayadi.. where Kaunda and his friend Chiluba were accommodated. MMCI paliba standard ka! and even if we insult her we should bear in mind that when time comes for Government to build her a house – SHE WILL PICK HER MODERN PLAN! ha..ha.. she will still have the last laugh anyway. wayigwira?

  43. What you call gutter journalism is big business! it’s a money maker! just like sex, gossip etc. bring out the dirt and you will smiling all the way to the bank! thats while your daily or times depend on tax payers money!

  44. # 45 are you calling me “dummy”??? Ukusamwa, ichibeleshi. You think this is a website for songs??? Doesn’t that person have money to go through a normal procedure to produce his/her album- you are a dummy as #24, and 25

  45. #56 Daily and Times are not the ideal newspapers or standards you can measure any paper by. They are weighed down sometimes by factors which you and me know. but read papers like washington post, new york times sorry i dont have an example of a local newspaper doing well. or compare the Post of today and the post of 1995. maybe it will ring a bell. You can be rich by being immoral but that does not take away the fact that you are immoral or unethical!

  46. Can somone define what a modern house to me please. Where did Maureen live before she went to State House?? Why does she not go to the family house before the so-called modern house is found for her. She is being greedy for nothing. Nonde is right the house is not an issue now. Is she really mourning??? After all we are aware that she contributed to Mwanawassa’s death, the man wanted to resign when he had a stroke this we know. Maureen don’t give Zambia unnecessary budgets and don’t be a burden. Go to your family house or is it on rent??? For those that protested, please lets wake-up Maureen is now a simple citizen, life is not about what you were before but what you are now.

  47. hahahahaha!!! I got that one. I mean you’re absolutely right. We can take her kwa George compund. In fact, she wasn’t a president- at least if it was ba Mwanawasa we could have said they take him kumayadi. Awe mwandini ba Maureen bashupa mwe!

  48. Black women all over the world are shaving their pubic hairs today in support of OBAMA’s election. Their message to the world:”READ OUR LIPS:-NO MORE BUSH”!

  49. If you can’t hang with the big dogs stay on the porch!! blogging is not for the faint hearted! i might have sounded a bit personal but don’t bring your personal issues to the forum, otherwise you risk being bruised!

  50. Ok back to Maureen Insider i think Maureen as a lawyer has read the constitution and she knows as long as she does not join politics she is entitled to a house and she picks her own plan. maybe thats where she is basing her rejection. Or maybe we need to see the house maybe its not up to state house standards?

  51. mmmhhh!!! ba #65 (African Queen) iyo mwa bika- isn’t this no under 75??? This is now porno.. whatever- we’re chatting about Nonde and Maureeen, iyee!!! My heart is now pumping fast. Awe chinjeni mwe!!!

  52. what does Obama’s election got to do with your/womens pubic hair? if you dont shave yours then you definately have a smelly coucheeeee

  53. #28,chi pankoloko can you leave my president mr Sata alone.you are stinking feaces just go and take a bath.Look at your big beak, you empty tin.we chipuba!

  54. On what grounds should Maureen reject any house the government offers her, whether be it for rent or otherwise?
My mother never got anything from the government when father died after serving a long, long, long time as a civil servant – not even pension money! Utter NONSENSE!
Zambians die in hundreds everyday. Death is part of life.

  55. Anonymous i agree with you . but are you aware that Chiluba rejected some place where Government wanted to build him a house and insisted on his prefered choice. Life is never fair . maybe we should remove the former presidents benefits clause from the constitution. I personally do not understand that a President who is well paid has to get all those free things after ruling. Kaya mwandi….

  56. zambian women fipuba. they are amenable to being used in political battles in which other people benefit. nonde was right.

  57. To Mourinho (Maureen), did you want to live in state house forever???? Selfish woman, look at the so many zambians who are homeless, do you feel for them kwena????

  58. #80 i am interested also in knowing whether your mum is Zambian and whether you are married. if so i would also want to know whether your wife is a Zambian woman.

  59. Allow me to comment on the Maureen saga about rejecting a property that has been identified suitable for her and her family. Some people are saying it’s a private matter.
Zambians please let’s wake up from a deep slumber of ignorance.
Question: Who do you think is paying for Maureen’s up keep? If your answer to this question is Maureen, then it’s a private matter, period. But if this is coming from the Treasury, boy every citizen has to scream if the demand is unreasonable. We Zambians are so much swayed by emotions. A vast majority of people are starving in Zambia as we speak, please be serious with national treasure, its 4 all. How many women ‘ve lost hubbys & no roof over their heads?

  60. Even if its coming from the treasury box ,she(her late husband) deserves the respect, this is not just some ordinary person we are talking about here its our late head of state,so what are you trying to put across.we Africans are so petty!

  61. Ex presidents fleece the nation while in power and continue to do so long after their tenure. How many ordinary workers continue to be supported by their employers after retiring on miserable pensions? The real fathers of Zambia were and are the ordinary people eking out a living in harsh environments to keep Zambia going. The only time they are paid any attention is during elections.

  62. #80, though you are right that women allow themselves to be used (unknowingly – ignorance is no defence) by other people, you should use the statistics right. Your in this sense includes your mum, grandmum, sisters if you have any. A wise person uses phrases such as a few, some and if you have solid evidence then you are at liberty to use an all inclusive phrase all women. Just practical advice.

  63. #86, just to exchange opinions, when you stand for public office, you sacrifice, what can you do for your country rather than what can the country do for you. A President is a servant of the people and not someone to be worshiped (cult of personality). It’s high time we started to account for public funds. I’m sure you are not employed and not paying any taxes because if you are, you will want your money to be spent prudently. Let’s looks at the national needs 1st b4 we can accommodate former servants. No one is above the country, so do not trivialize the money issue from the treasury. Do you know how many miners die to earn us foreign currency? What happens to their wives and children?

  64. #92 the solution to this problem lies in changing the constitution. from the debates i have heard i dont think anyone is talking about that and i dont think its even part of the NCC. otherwise the way things stand the past President is entitled to a house in his preffered location, 80 percent salary of the incumbent, a body guard, two trips abroad a year, two cars one for himself and one for his wife and an office etc. as for Maureen she is also entitled to a house and i think fifty percent of the incumbents salary i stand to be corrected on the last part.

  65. Tell those Tansinta women to respect the laws. Maureen is not the first person to lose her hubby. After all she turned his body into a show. They have homes. Let her get housing allowance befitting her status. The husband died, he did not finish his term. She cannot get full benefits as if he finished his term. Zambia is rated one of the poorest countries in the world were 85% of its citizens survive on less than $1.00 per day. What nonsense is this that you want to give her a mansion? They have bought houses in Europe and if she wants that life, let her move.

  66. Constituuutiiiooon! she is entitled to a house whether she built 70 or 100 houses in Italy or bahamas… What i am not sure of is whether she is entitled to reject some.

  67. A lot of widows are grieving the loss of their husbands.Prof.Chanda’s widow who died of the so called road traffic accident.Mazoka’s widow. What is so special about Maureen Mwanawasa.Let her be married to the corrupt RB if she wants to remain in state house

  68. #86, this is not personal, I just want to share with you. I was born and raised, educated on the CB but I escaped being a miner. I was privileged to visit the underground in a group of other managers from my company in 1986. I weeped open when we reached 900m below the ground, tunnels that had been dug out by my grandfather, his sons, cousins, close relatives and friends who worked for the mines. They retired poor and within 10 years of retirement, they passed on. No one recognises that contribution, do you? No one should take advantage of others, especially Maureen. She can even do without state sponsorship. Empathy, empathy, emptahy. It makes u understan someone’s world. Be ojective.

  69. kaunda lived in a ramshackle house owned by one chanda near unza for a long time. maureen has a house near lusaka city airport. she should forgo the rent she is getting from it and live there. wafwa kasai, ku zaire mulandu…

  70. I THINK SHEZ REALISED THAT HER DREAMS OF BEING GIVEN A DIPLOMATIC POST IS JUST AN ILLUSSION NOW GET A GRIP MADAM IFWE KUNO TULE BAZA MUMA OLD PPLS HOME SO THAT WE SEND MONEY TO BUILD HOUSS AND YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY OF REFUSED WHAT I WOULD CALL A DREAM HOME TO MY STANDARD BUT IAM A GRADUATE TOILING IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY NOT BECOZ I LIKE IT BUT CIRCUMSTANCES

  71. #102 I hear you. thats why am saying the constitution must be amended. why should all of us spend sleepless nights fighting for plots and later raising funds while others have multi billion kwacha houses built for them? Kaunda 7 billion kwacha, chiluba it will be beyond seven, Maureen i dont know how much then RB we are talking over 50 billion kwacha! we could build another public university!

  72. THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICAN POLITICS IS WHAT THE GOVT CAN DO FOR YOU NOT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE NATION THATS WHY WE ARE IN PERPETUAL PORVETY HOW MUCH DID THE LATE ALLOCATE HIMSELF FOR HIS MEDICAL EXPENSES ALOT OF BILLONS COZ HE KNEW HE WA S SICKILY AND HOW MUCH HAS BEEN SPENT ON THE FUNERAL TAKE A QUESS EUROPEAN CUNTRIES FUNDRAISE FOR THEIR PARTIES BUT IN AFRICA THEY USEGOVT COFFERS

  73. 53. suppergal
Stop your pathetic lies,Maureen does not have any house in PHI.U seem to be so mixed up & trying to pretend you know her & her family well but u actually know nothing at all.
Maureen has not rejected the house because of the area where it is located,it is the state of the house that she found unnacceptable. For once let’s learn to accept that some people have set standards coz of their hard work.Maureen & her children have always enjoyed & lived in big beautiful houses so why should they be taken to an inferior one after working tirelessly for the country.Learn to respect people’s choices & standards. She’s former second & first lady not a former Kaponya.

  74. Freedom fighter osa kamba pamalilo, tiyeni tikambe chabe nkani yama nyumba. Do you have any statistics showing how much Chiluba allocated to himself for health as compared to Levy or even KK? do you have statistics showing us how much is reserved for Presidents health in the states? unless we have these figures we cant not make sweeping conclusions that levy gave himself too much. The way i know the budget its done by technocrats at the ministry of Finance and not at state house. Of course i am not saying the President doesn’t look at it.

  75. most of the Zambian Official are criminals. They don’t buy houses directly but through their families and relatives.Maureen is over. she’s got houses through the Mwanawasa tree. Two years in state house but more richer than Vera

  76. 101. FREEDOM FIGHTER
The benefits former Presidents get including what the former first lady is getting surpass what diplomats get so it would be illogical for either former President(Chiluba & Kaunda) or the former first lady who is getting half what the incumbent President gets to accept a diplomatic role or go back into politics. For your own information,High Commissioners & Ambassadors are below Permanent Secretary level they don’t get much money as you think.

  77. #95, yes the constitution has to be followed in it’s present form but you must understand that it’s silent on the definition of what is appropriate accommodation for a widow of a serving president (who died in office). Everything is open to different interpretations if it’s not fully qualified in law like in this case. A rule of thumb, the govt has found her accommodation suitable for her needs and you must commend the govt for moving so fast in her case. We Zambians should be learning to not to be too emotional about issues. We need to think 1st, then act, plan, execute. NCC should also look at Obama. He was not born in the USA but he is now 44th US President.

  78. maureen has a chain of filling stations naimwe. be real mwebantu. she is just placing a burden on our poor mothers, sisters, nieces and granddaughters to parade themselves on her behalf. who imports fertilizer that banda will be selling at k50,000? be real mwebantu.

  79. 110. The Zambian constitution is very clear & it was clarified perfectly by the Attorney General & legal Minister. The former first lady gets almost all benefits the former Presidents get but the money she gets is slightly less since she’s only a widow to the former President who died whilst in office.
There is no rule of thumb here, the govt found her a house they thought is appropriate but unfortunately it’s not,is there anything wrong with someone complaining that it’s not appropriate, come on guys get serious.
#111 Your jokes ain’t worth it.We know it’s part of the fun but such lies are misplaced, maybe on forums not here.

  80. #100, the govt has made an effort in securing appropriate accommodation for the former 1st Lady and has met it’s present obligation in a short space of time. Do you remember what our 1st President went through when Kafupi took over? I was educated by Kaunda, free education, milk at break time, free books, shibukeni was under KK, what did Kafupi do for you? Here I’m in Europe ’cause of a good solid foundation from the KK era and I’m doing well in my job as an IT consultant. My point is let’s not take advantage of the docile zambians paying huge taxes to feed the already well off. To even have a roof over your head is a blessing. All zambians have contributed to building zambia not just LPM

  81. Chifumu Kingdom Banda, mudumbu, remove from the constitution the need for us, the prople, to continue paying for KK, Chiluba, Mwanawasa, Banda et al. It takes ages for our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, neighbours and all, to be paid their meagre pensions if they get it before they die. If a vice president, in Banda’s scheme of things, can get K35 million per month, what more should he ask for in retirement when a Shangombo teacher earns K12 million per month? Be real, I am not joking!

  82. #112, you and I may be miles from the truth but what I can say to you is that the nitty gritty of what is acceptable accommodation is a contentious issue. Question: Do you thing govt has just found her a rat hole without due care? Don’t you think they have had appropriate officers look at the temp living quarters and qualified the premises to befit Maureen and knowing the international community is looking at how we are looking at the window of our 3rd President? Sometimes you need to look at both sides of the coin. There is no doubt Maureen can live without state sponsorship but she is entitled to what the law says. But how far does the law go, doesn’t go into details about benefits.

  83. #92 Even if her benefits are from the state coffers, she deserves the privacy.. after all.. many Zambians eg students also get public funds and spend privately without even accounting for the loan…. Let her also get what she deserves with accordance to government standards

  84. #115 it does go into details. for instance while Kaunda and Chiluba get 80 percent of RB ‘s salary she will only get 50. and she is entitled to a house to be built by the state as long as she does not participate in active politics.

  85. I do not have the facts about the Maureen saga. But if indeed she
has behaved like a diva, I have only to point to No. 98’s contribution above. It is poignant. Time and again, we Zambians have
expressed the indoctrinated view that when you have held high office,
no eyebrows should be raised when you are rewarded with benefits that
are beyond and above the corresponding prevailing economic doldrums
of the country. Many, who have deserved just the threshold of rewards, in relation to their contribution to the country, have ended up in abject poverty and died as ignominiously as they have lived. Yet, we still turn a blind eye and ‘forget’.

  86. To whom it may concern, my sister Joyce got married just before the elections at inters in what is being called the wedding of the year. Please those with unfounded stories, stop it. Sorry if you were not invited. Good luck Ba Joyce and best wishes in your new life.

  87. We need similar ideologies- Sata
Patriotic Front (PF) President Michael Sata says political parties should only merge if they hold similar political ideologies.
Mr. Sata says there is no need for political parties that do not have a similar agenda to come together.
He was responding to a question on the need for the opposition parties to merge in a bid to oust the ruling MMD from government.
This was during a press briefing in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, Friday.
Mr. Sata questioned the credibility of the Zambian electoral system under the current legislation.
He also reiterated his party’s plans to petition President Rupiah Banda’s election.

  88. For all disappointed PF cadres, you have now got it from the Horse’s mouth so please stop blaming HH for Sata’s defeat

  89. LPM build a house in Kabulonga’s Kudu road. She can live there. This unfair that She is giving conditions. She (MM)is also intitled to 50% salary of the umcumbert President. Sure that is total greediness in the former 1st lady.

  90. PLEASE LEAVE THE POST ALONE….they are just merely reporting on what is transpiring…if you have a problem with them DONT READ their publicatons.PERIOD

  91. Lovely zambians,KK moved from the GRZ rented hse, let Maureen move into it and start waiting for her promised hse. Remember FTJ has to be next then maureen. It pays to be humble ba maureen wesu,we appreciate ur situ, thu I don’t believe spending 7 billion ZMK on presido’s hse in all this poverty. The greedy have made their cirlce while the poor go singing round it for envelopes. God forbid let’s have a simple standard housing plan for these guys the rest is up to them to afford.

  92. Walasa! not even a simple plan scrap the whole crap. why should we build houses for people we pay so well while they are in office? they should not tell us about how much they sacrifice. because if it was that bad none of them would want to stay for 27 years like KK or ask for a third term like Kafupi.

  93. Think a minute about the many women that are similar situation. Who is advocating for them? what is govt doing to help them/mitigate housing problm? Mureen should consider herself luck that our corrupt government has feelings for her. Some widows fein for themselves. What are her entitlements?

  94. Can someone inform this widow that she did not achieve anything for her to be in state house. It was not an achieved but ascribed status. They stayed a medium hoouse in olympia extension and i seen no reason for her to reject Roma house offered by government. She has to be productive for her to enjoy expensive living. I welcome her to the competitive zambian markets and looking forward to prove her worth as a real productive woman.

  95. #7&#10 may Iremind you that the issue is not private, co’s the money that will be paid to rent is tax payers money. I wonder what next! from maureen, especially when she will have to choose a design for the house she has to be built I can that house being another state house, remember she is also on half of the incumbent presido’s salary until she dies, chiluba and kk are at 80% and soon it will be banda! poor zambia every body will be working just to maintain these politicians that is why we deserve better from them in and out of office, widows included. no other zambian widow is looked after by the gvt when the bread winner dies so these people should show some appreciation .

  96. shall we have the govt start building houses for FTJ, Maureen and RB with plans and sites provided by themselves now. i dont want any noise after 6 months from Thandiwe (my swit heart)when RB dies. pipo seem so careful with expenditure wen in state house. they fear to over blow what kind of a house they would want after they are kicked out the system.

  97. I recomend Nonde ,she is courageous person and has always been fighting for the poor Zambians .
Our resources are just too scarce, when few selfish individuals like her demand for a large share and yet expect to run developmental projects across the country. No ways .

  98. we don’t owe them anything. they occupy that office by choice and therefore should not keep the nation at ransome. the women demonstrating have definetly nothing to do. if kk who in my opinion desrves better and more than all those who came after him for wrestling freedom from the colonial masters, was only handed the house 2,3 weeks ago, where has he been staying all these years? what muareen is saying, is that the house should be built here and now otherwise where does the gvt get a morden house from? because even most gvt executive houses
were built years ago, maureen please give us a break, you and your husband could not as much as combat cholera epidemics.

  99. Zambia I cry, why do few low headed people think Maureen’s rent is private matter? I do believe it is in public interest to know what is happening with Former first lady where accommodation is concerned. The people who will be paying are all Zambians regardless of their back ground. Surely as someone has just pointed out Levy had several properties that Maureen can use if not happy with the current offer. Secondly the rent it self can be more than the rent for 50 junior police officers. Zambia thats why poverty will never end for the majority as long as selfishness by those in power continues. If not careful, poor people will raise against those who are rich through selfishness. look at

  100. Cotd: Nairobi- Kenya, there are certain areas which are no go area. If you look smart people will come in numbers and demand to share money if not they will throw faeces and urine at you. This is not a lie true story. In Brazil just the same. So peace shouldnt be taken for granted. Secondly, wait for the report money used on the campaign by the ruling party. It will be massive and those projects needed to be done are out of equation at the moment.

  101. i see nowrong in Ms Nonde’s comment over Maureen’s refusal of a house provided by the goverment, Maureen should realise that she was the wife to the president and conditions differwhen one is president and one who was a dependant to the goverment official.
She should just move to the transit house that has been provided, more over she should be thankfull.
Its not MMD providing but the zambian goverment, there is nothing special about Maureen.

  102. I feel sorry for ba Maureen. She has endured a lot of suffering expesially that her husbands funeral and body was made public and the funeral ran on like fore-ever. This only brings the plight of the numerous Govt.workers that die in service and wait for so many years to get their dues. those in authority have even the power to reject what is even offered to them. Dan Pule, here is the former firts Lady not those Leah and the other one.

  103. maureen has not right to reject a hse paid by our own tax payer’s money, she shud consider herself luck that shes even gona be given a hse even after the perosn who was to benefit is no more, there are serious issues we need to address as nation such as housing for the pipo in mazyopa who are really suffering.

  104. We should not pretend – Nonde is right. The women supporting Maureen are not even paying tax. A lot of Zambians are starving because of selfishness – let us learn to distribute wealth equaly.

Sata said the money from the emerald mines should be enjoyed by all, but who enjoying this money decided to rig election results so that they continue their expensive lives.

  105. Iwe ka joyce. You need to slow down on cheap talk. You should lead by example by shifting to kalingalinga and aunt moreen will join you later. While you are at it you should try and talk less so that you give that hubby a baby as quickly as possible. Yapping will only scare that dude of yours. Leave maureen to enjoy her confort. Its her standards and noone should lower them.

  106. Please clarify. The article says that Maureen is used to staying in a ‘better environment’. Can someone explain what is the current state of the house that was offered. Is the house habitable? So many people are living on the streets and so many former civil servants have died before getting their benefits. We should be grateful for what we have.

  107. CONMAN
What standards are refering to,Let creat her own stuff to set the expensive standards .

Its unfortunate that it was a shortlived happiness and no more kulibonesha ,but she still enjoy moderate life style but not expensive life like the PF president and RB enjoys.

Nonde should recommended by all patriotic zed people who cares about the poor zambian

  108. LC

She was offered my fathers house in Roma, it is an executive house, 6 bedrooms, paque floor, Modern shelf divider, electric fence . 2 self contained bedrooms, washingroom,TV room, Modern Kitchen . It is a very good house going around 8-10 million Kwacha per month.

  109. Nonde is very right! Point of correction please, Moreen is mrs late Mwanawasa. Those women were benefisheries in Mwanawasa’s tree administration rule by Moreen. Moreen should by now realise that She is a former first lady period. Please leave Nonde alone, you danderheads, Alaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  110. joyce nonde simukoko is right. We cant afford to be losing millions of kwacha on one person whae thousands are wallowing in poverty.

  111. there is nothing wrong with nonde’s comments – she also pays tax besides moureen is not poor and portrays to be very kind person so whats the house for? she has more than enough at zambian standards – zambia is a poor country – HIPC

  112. Nonde is right. The law defines everything. This is not a private matter as public funds are involved.

The level of analysis among Zambians is really pitiful. MM cannot be demanding more than what the law says.

  113. Maureen naye nichani kansi. She should learn to appreciate. What kind of standards does she expect, another plot one? Malabishi!!!

My Farther died before he collected his pension, 8 years after retirement. When it was time for us to collect the cash, it couldnt help much because of the continued loss of value of kwacha. Now herself is very quickly being offered a house to be paid by the TAX THAT I PAY EVERY DAY eve ati iyayi. Whats the matter with her. Zambia does not owe her that much as she desires. Everyone only gets pension as stipulated by the organisation in control not by the pensioner or beneficiary.

  114. It is sad that this ex concubine of Sata , Joyce Nonde who only got married two weeks ago when she sensed Sata was losing has decided to attack her fellow woman in public.
Maureen and her husband led an affluent life even before he become president of Zambia. She like any Zambian has got the right to reject an unsuitable house due to it’s state.
We request Joyce Nonde to just concertrate on servicing her two weeks old husband Mr Simukoko.

  115. Ba Maureen what about those Blank Cheques …….am sure you know what am talking about. Just buy yourself a villa somewhere using those Blank Cheques and 4get about the Govt renting a house for you. OUCH it hurts….Tiulule

  116. Nonde is a Tribalist in sense that whenever a non-bemba is given something by government she is against. Why did she not protest when Chiluba refused to accept the plot that was given to him??
Nonde should just start enjoying her marriage. I think she is not getting enough sex.

  117. Joyce should tell us what conditions she enjoys at FFTUZ. dont just attack other women. Iyo marriage ya mu ma late forties mwenzo yopa chani kansi! Obviously munatamangako bad!

  118. We dont care about who Nonde is , but she issued a genuine and meaniful statement which can only be rejected by petty beneficiaries. They used to stay in a medium cost house in Olympia Extension of generally low standard. This widow should achieve something rather wish for manna to come from the poor government. Contesting for our scarce resources does not only show that she is a greed person but also arrogant enough to claim what she does posses.

  119. #156 Golyati, It appears you are extremely “icikopo” by birth. learn to follow the conversation or debate. Contribute maturely and not like a kid. How many years has your government taken to consider the plight of the so many poor families in Mazyopa company still living in tents. Is Maureen more of a Zambian than families living in tents? She shouldn’t have rejected the house in Roma.

  120. #65 blogging is not all about making childish coments.please expand your brain write sensible comment.I think you are a pupil from a brocken family.

  121. You Zedians, is this an issue to occupy your minds. I suggest you guys start trading on the internet for the sake of OUR ECONOMY. Forget these politicians. Thats their career (Self preservation).

    IFITALA FYEKA FYEKA

  122. leave maureen alone she wants to live in kabulonga where all former heads of state were rented from state house to acompound let her mantain her status bane

  123. Moreen should fill for the poor. She always helped widows and now she knows how it is to be one. However, she has the right under succession laws of zambia to decent accomodation.DO NOT POLITICISE DEATH ISSUES OR ELSE YOU ARE THE NEXT VICTIM JUST. MOREEN NEVER IMAGINED BEING ONE. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

  124. it is a very well known secret that Joyce Nonde got married last week at Pamodzi Hotel and we saw the pictures in the post

  125. What kind of house did Maureen live in before state house? Are these women really sure that she is still mourning, no! She showed us what she is meant off during Levy’s funeral. Dr. Kaunda lived in an old house in Kalundu and Kabulonga, Dr.Chiluba is in an old house in Kabulonga and these are former heads of state. Maureen was only a wife to the late president, nothing more. Her demanding spirit is worrying; I hope she wasn’t as demanding on her late husband. What Joyce said is correct.

  126. she should not protest coz 100% the Government can not let her stay in a bad house. The problem comes when she wants to stay in a mirror glass house beyond the Government badget.people be realistic pliz. For those women i think they just want some money. If you look at them closely they are uncivilised, uneducated and women kaponyas.A woman medical Doctor can never a sink low to protest for Maureen. No wonder i took year to marry because ‘some’ of our Zed women are very bad mannered. They do not reason.

  127. I support Joyce all the way.I do not believe Masureen deserves a house befitting a former president. She is only a former first lady.Yes the government will look after her but we do not owe her more than that.I say we because that money is coming from our paychecks every month. And its a huge chunk as it is!!

I wish those women would concentrate on looking after themselves because Maureen will definitely not do that for them.

  128. for give me for my typing errors.I did not read through because i rushed for my burning food in my kitchen.Wish you a nice day.

  129. It’s evident that the house offered can not be compared to millions or trillions of Kwacha these people embezzled.
Don’t offer her anything she has infact, enough cash to build herself a mansion. We can just say thanks to her and give her a certificate for the gud work instead. Instead of renting Maureen a house alot of street kids and orphans can benefit from the money. Let’s concentrate on the under priveledged and not people who are already billionaires. awe!!!!!!! it’s too much.

  130. The level of debate on this blog leaves much to be desired. Even mere common sense seem to be lacking from the majority of bloggers!

  131. LT please this site is not site for exchanging insults. Please Advise people to post good, moral and matured coments. Am refering African Queen#65 and #72 insider. Please LT try to block some of this insults.

  132. ba nonde just seat, what were you doing all thses years, only getting married at 50 years..your children will look like your grand children..leave mama maureen alone, she deserves respect and she has to exercice her rights…just take care of your hubby and enjoy your old age marriage ala ba mayoooooooo plz!!!!!!!stay away from mrs mwanawasa you zambian mayo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  133. Guys, have you observed that women have a natural tendency to quarrel? At first I thought it was only Zambian women but after living with a German woman for years, I see that there’s no difference. Men have a less complicated way of dealing with problems, something like…’who dares the most wins’ and not ‘who talks the most wins’.
I hope I did not offend any ladies out there, just thinking aloud.

  134. ba Maureen ifya bupuba muleke! You should be shy of some things. Did u give those useless and uneducated women brown envelops? Your husband was fighting corrution (Formally and officially) plz stop corrupting those innocent women- Don’t misuse them coz of their poverty, give them some money to get along with life and stop those non-sensical attitudes you’ve enkindled in them.

  135. You guys, this has nothing to do with how modern the Roma house is. Maureen just didn’t want leave State House. She wants a place where there will be a lot of people serving her. Thats why she settled for a guest house. KK & FTJ were never given such a privilage. They had to find their own accomodation.

  136. Pa Zedi awe mwe! the whole country is now discussing one woman. No wonder others now want us to talk armpits whatever development there is more over our wives are not french.

  137. my worry is that firstly i have never seen maureen in such heavy grief ever since she lost her ‘darling’ and now this.and that is why i dont agree withh the ‘maureen is still mourning; propaganda.my deduction is that she is a gold digger and will stop at nothing in order to accumulate more.her ways are like the pits of hell which never fills up.

  138. # 202, this woman is wasting tax payer. She wants to be more expensive than former presidents when she’s just a former 1st lady.

  139. Well done Nonde teach the widow a lesson, who says she should be choosing where to hang her a#$@. She is no longer in command there is akazi a a Banda (Simufana uja imwe ?!)

  140. How are these fags given to the Contributers, i stay in zed & have been given a British Flag, whats up! never been to the U K

  141. Maureen pse come to Peace Gardens opposite Zamtel, church road. Uzanipeza namwa na mutototo. You will like the room

  142. plzz leave my wife to be alone she will be moving to my newly furnished modern house i guess thats the one she meant naiwe nonde indiwe wapakamwa i have won a loto guys i need viagra i know alina chilaka muzimai………………..

  143. The POST has lost ethics if at all it ever had any.
Anyway the POST editors dont see anything wrong with their way of reporting. This is how I realised there was a problem. Malupenga claimed they are the most balanced paper, and they have always been fair. Now if Malupenga meant what he said, then I had in fact underrated his problem. It is actually bigger than I thought. Malupenga cannot even improve because in the first place he cannot even see his problem. That is how serious his condition is. If it has not been like this, then it has now reached an advanced stage. His conscience may be irritrievable.

  144. Iwe #109, if you are still on the blog today, let me give you a bit of education,. you say diplomats and high commisionaers do not get a lot of money such that Maureen can not accept being appointed as one; Its not all about what they pay them my dear that people rush for such posts; its about the enabling envirnment. Pay is just a small reflection of what they get, there are other privileges that they enjoy by virtue of being diplomats which you and I cant. they are like presidents in that given country representing you and I. Widen up your horizon my brother even politician when they want you to vote for them, they will tell you that they want to serve you but when they get there, somethin

  145. COnt’d they want us to pay them, look after them when they retire and the list goes on and on. Do unto others as you want them do unto you. I know this might sound hard on our mother but all great truths started as blasphemy. We love you no ill feelings at all.

  146. May I be corrected if I am wrong, did Nonde just wake up from the blues and start commenting on Maureen or someone interviewed her? If the answer is that someone interviewed her, then what she said is in line with the law and a wise person will not twist facts to suite his theories. What did you want her to say? What she feels? No! but what the law says. Gentlemen the law has no feelings, so dont hate anyone who practices the law, hate the law and those who made it. For they should have thought about Maureens’ feelings and those like in her shoes.

  147. You are too smart for the majority of people in this forum, they think with their hearts. We are 100 years still from becoming part of the sophiscated and progressive world.

  148. Uyu moleen she’ partly from zimbabwe she also has houses there naleya ifyo aikalile pansaka nafipwa ala ayoko nao amano ububi

  149. You marchers what was in it for you, what were you really marching for.Don’t you have anything productive to do.How can we end poverty if valuable productive time is wasted by pipo meant to produce food like that.Moleen is rich what do u guys have/ you keep singing about poverty in zambian if you spent time cultivating instead of marching for no aparrent reason zambia would be a better place for your children.I pity your children nothing tangible to learn from mothers or useless women like you.moleen will not share whatever she has with you guys wake up.
