The Zambia Institute of Marketing has written to Toyota Zambia expressing displeasure over the company’s intentions to recruit a foreigner to head its Sales and Marketing Department.
Toyota Zambia recently ran some adverts in South African newspapers inviting applications to fill the position of National Sales and Marketing Manager in Zambia.
But Institute President David Kombe said recruiting foreign marketing professionals for jobs that could be done by Zambians is unacceptable.
Mr. Kombe said the institute wrote to Toyota to air its position over the matter in line with its powers under an Act of Parliament establishing the institute.
“We will not allow these foreigners who are not even our members to come in and get jobs that can ordinarily be done by Zambians. If Toyota advertised for those jobs locally, they will find the talent they need locally,” he said.
“Under an Act of Parliament establishing ZIM, we have powers to influence the issuance of work permits to foreigners coming to work here as marketing professionals and we will consider those options if Toyota fails to respond adequately.
He said the institute will use all channels to ensure that the matter is amicably resolved.
For the first time a professional Body speaks out. I wish we could have as many people and professional bodies as bold as this. I have seen LAZ dragging it fee on matters that impinge on national interests, I m glad you have taken this bold step if Totyota wishes can take back their vehicles and sell from South Africa, but I know that would not be in the interests of the shareholders as they are making a killing here fo a vehicle that cost less but here it would fetch triple the amount.
it also calls for ZICA to change its thinking allowing most local companies employing accountants demanding acca/cima qualifications and yet we ve more suitable qualifications such as ZDA,ZICA, Ba Acc. In this global village and accountancy being the most streamlined, dont see why zambia should be losing forex to pursue a myth that once u ve acca u a sorcerer that can do divinal things. Its a fallacy coz accounting stardards are the same.
Professional bodies like Zica have falled us in this area. Just go to firms like KCM, LCM, Mopani, Lumwana, most banks/lending institutions, even government ministries and see how many are practicing has accountants when they are not even fit to be accounts clecks. Just because their brothers own the firms. Well professional bodies are just busy making plans on how they will make students fall exams so that they make more cash from students rewriting.
Excellent i don’t think Toyota south Africa can ever advertise such a position in Zambia so why should we advertise in south Africa when we have competent Zambians?? I believe they wanted to give the job to some friend in SA
VIVA David and ZIM committee for this bold step…. I hope other companies will follow suit
Visit Lafarge cement also. The commercial Manager is souhtAfrican.
stiopet company, immigration officers go in and investigate how many zambians are employed there.
KCM has just declared some Zambia professionals redundant meanwhile Indians are plenty. Shouldn’t PF only accept a Zambian to be pruned on after all Indians are gone?
spot on…lets demostrate
What is happening at KCM is sad. How can you retrench competent Zambians who have worked so hard for that mine to be were it is and replace them with incompetent Indians? Where is the government, can the minister of labour show leadership on this matter?
Corruption has weakened the whole system, take a survey to check how many foreigners have flooded zed in the name of engineers while UNZA vommits graduates every year(ministry of home affairs>immigration dpt should be overhauled). thumbs up D.K + ZIM.
It is not a matter of vomiting graduates every year,it is the quality of graduates.Graduates who concentrate on bashing peoples vehicles are not worth being called graduates.UNZA graduates are below the required standard.I would prefer a graduate from ZCAS,CBU or Evelyn to a UNZA graduate.
Honestly speaking, we can’t find a competent Marketer in Zambia, remember, we need to SALE our toyota’s beyond Zambia too, so the company needs someone who probably has PhD and can speak english, and such a person can only be found in the diaspora.
I see nothing wrong with the advert i saw in the Sunday Times dated 17th February 2013, i actually was interested and a lot of my Zambian colleagues residing and working in South Africa and personally feel i will be happy if one of us got the Job. In fact advertising in the media here gives us an opportunity to see what is on offer in our own country, hence lets not make judgements that those jobs are for foreigners.
The big question is, why didn’t they advertise the job in a Zambian newspaper coz there are so many competent and qualified locals to do the job?
Sorry my dear, I am not criticising your point and I do not stand for that but just informing you, especially all politicians. They never employee citizens who are already in foreign countries because they fear that these are enlightened with their salary structures and will cause a lot of havoc in negotiating the package and other working conditions. When they are convinced that they need a local, they will pick a citizen who is based in the country where the post exists and this only happens when they are establishing the new company to use him to set it up because he knows the laws and all corners. Up on fullfilling one order or more, they will now send his foreign boss from outside the country to report to him, if he is lucky, if not, flimsy grounds will be sought and gets fired. MAFIA
Good for a Start. Now go round these companies like Airtel, MTN, Zambia Sugar, Chilanga Cement and hound out the foreigners please!!
You are a narrow minded person. Zambians have jobs in foreign countries why should we deny foreigners countries jobs here. They pay tax to our governements and encourage diversification. Get an education and join the global village.
Honestly we preach about empowering zambians but with such occurences how are we zambians being empowered if the so called established franchises in zambia are sourcing services from other foreign personels when we have competent professional markers in zambia. Its so disappointing
Fantastic; they do the same everywhere. A local has got to be given “first refusal”; olala, ZIM president Daniel Kombe”; weldone mate; very good. Its such a shambles that our own people are looked upon as useless yet they are the ones that prop the so called foreign managers. Now all institutions, take it personal and start taking surveys to see who is doing what in the country. Its pathetic. You Zambians like making things difficult for yourselves; see now! Kambwili came with passion to change things; what happened, you moved him and this Shamenda is not doing as well as he was supposed to.
I am working with south africans and they are not better than us in that field. We have capable people to do the job locally
its tough, you need a PHD in marketing to work for toyata
The person currently occupying the position – Neil David Stewart – is a Zimbabwean run-away who does not even have Grade 12 certification (talk less of a Diploma or a degree). Gilbert Mfuya & Bryan Mutakasha are very competent highly qualified Toyota Managers who could easily be upgraded to fill the position.
The chap currently occupying the position needs to be evicted and deported ASAP
Toyota Zambia is not owend by the Zambian government
it’s answerable to its share holders period. If they think they can get better value for money by employing a South African so be it
If you want the job just apply kwasila
The people of ZAMBIA voted for free enterprise in 1991 please don’t kill it now.
This is why I like uncle Bob. He has brought sanity there instead of depending on foreigners for every little job. What marketing can the South African do at Toyota Zambia which Zambians can fail to do? Zambians love the Toyota brand but they make them expensive forcing people to buy from Japan. Reduce the cost of these cars in Zambia and you won’t even need a marketing manager.
I m a Zambian based in Austra asia. I watched CNN ‘Market place Africa’ this evening and was moved to tears when I watched Zambian economist Dambisa Moyo being interviewed. She articulated her issues so intelligently, systematically and boldly leaving the interviewer have no choice but admire her candor, alertness and fluency.( The interviewer actually made remarks to that effect) It made me proud to be Zambian. Yes we have professionals that can run our country if we believed in the philosophy of Meritocracy than political affiliation, ethnicity, tribalism, regional background, sex, gender etc. Well done Dambisa!
Ok.
Now can South Africa also please deport the thousands of Zambians working in SA. I doubt the jobs they have is because they can’t find suitable South Africans.
Global village you useful *****s!
i wish james banda of laz was like his tribal cousin bemba kalulu kombe and all unprofessional rubber stamp bodies
This is excellent job Mr. President. For sometime now I have never seen such kind of boldness except that of the Late Timothy Walamba and the Late FTJ both while at ZCTU. Unfortunately, this is directed at an innocent party. Please, don’t spare the Ministry of Labour and PF Govt alhough the problem is inherited from the past and that is not an excuse. If the laws allow it or law enforcers are either corrupt or inefficient, why can’t Toyota Zambia take advantage of the loophole. They rightfully need control of their investments. Also diversity of staff is very important for Zambia and Zambians if necessary to co-exist and we are benefiting. Please, read all South African job boards and other countries and you will be schocked to find hundreds adverts which will never appear on our…
Good work guys. Too many South Africans in our country doing jobs that can be done by Zambians. Even simple fitters at the mines……….they are from South Africa. Do you know that not a single Zambian owns a restaurant at Manda Hill? They are ALL run by South Africans! Zambia is a province of South Africa! And Sata in the MP!!!!!
Good move by the marketing body. However, citizenship alone should not warrant one to be offered a position. They are a lot of things that companies look out for. Education, professionalism, work ethic, Innovation, dedication to the company to mention but a few. If members of the marketing body meet these qualifications, then can i support what they are saying. Other than that, let the company hire a competent person. Its their money afterall
ZIM is a professional body and hold a huge profile of members . let it be consulted when hiring high ranking marketing personnel. For sure one cant have dificulties to find a competent marketing manager in zambia. There are a lot of professional marketers around the country. One one hand ZIM take part in the interviews of high profile marketing jobs to scrutinise the candidates.
Yes can South Africans also please deport thousands of Zambians working in their country. surely does it mean those Zambians working there have jobs that can’t be done by south Africans? Can we please understand staff diversity! Get professional and don’t just talk anyhow! We have loads of Zambian working in other states Why can’t we give chance to them aswell! Professionalism is really a problem in zambia I think.
