POLICE in Lusaka have arrested former cabinet minister in the MMD Government Newstead Zimba for allegedly assaulting his wife, Naomi.

Lusaka Province police commissioner Joyce Kasosa confirmed Mr Zimba’s arrest, which took place last Friday.

Mr Zimba was released on police bond on Saturday and is expected to appear in court this Thursday.

Ms Kasosa said the former cabinet minister allegedly assaulted his wife after a marital dispute.

She, however, declined to divulge further details on the matter as it will soon be in court.

“Yes, I want to confirm that Mr Zimba was arrested on Friday and he was released on Saturday after interrogations. He will be appearing in court soon,” Ms Kasosa said.

Mr Zimba, who is also a former trade union movement leader, was reported to have assaulted his wife on April 30 at their home in Lusaka after a marital dispute whose nature still remains private.

Ms Kasosa told the Sunday Mail that Naomi reported the assault case to the police and a docket had been opened to pave way for further investigations.

Mr Zimba’s wife also presented a medical report she obtained from the University Teaching Hospital, where she received treatment.
Naomi was reported to have left the family home for fear of possible further abuse at the hands of the former Home Affairs minister.

Mr Zimba divorced his wife of many decades shortly after he was appointed minister to marry Naomi just after the return to multi-party politics.

The Zambian Government has since stepped up its fight against gender-based violence with President Sata and First Lady Christine Kaseba herself strongly voicing against the vice.

    • UPND strongman Hakainde Hichilema has charged that President Michael Sata has failed to run the country and has asked Zambians not to lose hope but seek a democratic way to replace him when time comes.

Speaking on Let The People Talk programme on Radio Phoenix Tuesday morning, May 14, 2013, Hichilema said the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) duped the people and continue deceiving them. He told the people that the country had better leadership to stir the country to prosperity.

“Our hearts are with you, please under stand people don’t lose hope,” pleaded Hachilema.

He said the 90 days slogan was a fallacy but said he was happy that Sata and PF had been given chance to governor so that people can see their failures.

More details later as HH is still on Phoenix

    • My friend a police bond does not go with any amount of money 4 u to be released nt even a one ngwee n u cn b released on any day of da wik da law does nt restrict that i think u shud also differentiate btwn police bond and bail in a nutshell police bond z issued at a police station nd bail at court.

    • Domestic violence and drink driving are two major vices that common practice in Zambia. The police tend to turn a blind eye to these vices. Am pretty sure the Police, friends and relatives strongly advised Naomi to not to press charges. We’ve seen all this before time and time again eg GMB case where he battered his wife to a pulp but it was all swept under the carpet in plain view of the whole nation. Its a twisted world pa Zed

  1. Oh Please where does an old man like him even find energy to beat up a wife. Just lock him up for a month and send a judge hearing his bail application to europe for a three months vacation

    • Those who have low physical strength resort to auxiliary weaponry. He could have used a sjambok or something extra to his “limited” physical capacity.

  2. Why refer to Mrs. Zimba simply as Naomi and yet you refer to him as Mr. Zimba? You are promoting perceptions.

This story makes sad reading. Surely, this man is a grandfather and being former minister should be the one advising young people against violence.

    • poverty has cripped in,, thats why we tell these madalas to stick to the older wives and go back to the village or ku farm when retired..
Now these are the side effects of recycling madalas!!
AZimba go back to first wife of many year and go kumuzi or ku farm… na fwaka ya chingoli muchefyeko!

  3. I reckon things are tough for the old man , no longer at ease , with no ministerial job , no answer even after kneeling to presidentol , with a young porch wife ………………………

  4. it was going to happen at some point- an old madala marrying a young girl -it was only for his little money and not his looks.Sooner or later problems were bound to arise as the monies evaporate and his strength wanes- unless of course he had thousand of Viagra pills to keep him going

  5. IF THIS IS TRUE, AS NEWSPAPER ARTICLES CAN SOMETIMES BE MISLEADING, THIS IS SAD WHEN IT COMES FROM OUR LEADERSHIP. WHAT SORT OF EXAMPLE IS THIS SHOWING TO OUR YOUNG PEOPLE?

PEOPLE IN LEADERSHIP MUST BE CAUTIOUS OF THE ROLE THEY PLAY IN SOCIETY. WIVES OF OUR LEADERSHIP SHOULD ALSO BE CAUTIOUS THAT THEIR DIFFERENCES CAN EASILY AFFECT THE WHOLE COUNTRY. IT IS BETTER TO BE CAREFUL BANE.

MR. ZIMBA MUST RESOLVE HIS DIFFERENCES WITH HIS WIFE AND INFORM THE WHOLE NATION THAT HE HAS RESOLVED THEM.

  6. What happened to anyinaMuzipasi? Bakinkhu baoli bako bakale nganya? Tipenja kubatola ‘na!

    • Banyina Musipasi is late, she passed away 1month ago, and she died a very sad woman, because of that same Naomi, she hasnt seen anything yet, and as for Mr. Zimba he left a woman who used to respect him, for the Gold digger he choose for a wife, she will finish you and u will remember bana Musipasi

  7. What happened to anyinaMuzipasi? Balinkhu baoli bako bakale nganya? Tipenja kubatola ‘na!

  8. GBV nabukote??? mudala mukose! thats what comes with leaving the wife of your youth, riding off into the sunset with some gold digging floozy who I hope has found someone her age or younger ‘ukumyafwako’!!!! You not only lost your wife, family and moral compass but your dignity too when you decided to put wisdom aside and go with the thoughts from the lower realms! so mukose mudala, your new belle hasnt even started rinsing you!!

  9. @ Ku Masangalatoni–Lekeni HH ateke, I like your tumbuka, mwayowoya chitumbuka chenecho abwezi, ka imwe aolibinu balinkhu apa mukhumba kutola banyinu?

  10. Is it not the same Naomi who was complaining in the newspapers that her husband Newstead had changed for the worse since he became a minister?

  11. SAD indeed. Money ! Money ! Money ! is evil and misleading he forgot that his fortune was a result of the Gods blessings with his first wife. Once she left she went with the key. All what you Zimba has been going through is just the beginning, the worst is yet to come.

  12. Our public figures (especially politicians) need a “fixer” of their ineptude behaviours. Im game if you really need one…

  13. Its too early to judge Mr. Zimba. Its possible the lady may have thrown the first punch along with a lot of unprintables. So Mr Zimba was supposed to give the biblical left cheek too? There are women that have a hidden agenda especially when it comes to property, by tactfully and deceitfully causing an assault, to use the same as a bargaining chip to receiving a lion’s share of the estate. Very common in SA and infact there, they hire thugs to kill their spouses, especially to gain insurance benefits. I receive the above news with a pinch of salt folks.

  14. Ha! I didn’t know that I would live to witness this. Naomi you got married your father’s friend. Your friend Kate’s father. Now this! Whatever goes up. Comes down! I still remember a picture of you in the post newspaper fighting with Kate’s mother for this man. Ha! Karma is very much alive! You were such a beautiful girl, you could have done better than this!

  15. I thought Mr. Zimba was not around as we have not heard of him in a long time. If I recall there was a fight when he divorced his first wife to marry Naomi. It was an ugly scene as it appeared on ZNBC and all the print media. I thought this old man had grown up!!!! That’s the consequence of going out with an under-five wife. You must face the consequences.

  16. yeah! I remember how crazy this man went over this ka girl in 1991 when we voted in mmd and the man became minister of home affairs.he showered this ka thing with a sorts of gifts.incliding a house in lagos road rhodes park.bmw’s and all sorts of luxuries.shoppings at then crossland import and export. The man now has run out of finances when the girl has heat peak.she can’t sustain and now resorts to brutalising to keep her under wraps. Sorry mr 4×4

    • @ jar cob zoomer. Walasa boyi. Umuzuulu nga wavana abaiche bala butuka. I bet you even those houses are on some uncleared mortgage about to be called by some bank. watch this space! So guys stick to your mamas, in poverty and in wealth.

  17. Can someone please help this old man with a phone number to RB so that he can give him contacts to an image builder

  18. This fellow is a habitual wife batterer. Soon after being appointed cabinet minister in the Chiluba administration he bought two stoves one for his wife and the other for his mama nini and caused a fracas. Check your records

  19. What goes round………….

By Chama Nsabika, 17 June 2002

INFORMATION minister Newstead Zimba’s first wife, Helen, has sued his current wife, Naomi Mbewe, for marriage interference.

Helen has filed the suit in the Chilenje local court and it comes up for the first hearing tomorrow. She said she had endured great suffering for a long time and now wanted justice to be done.

  20. Yangu ! Ati uwakalema takaleka.Mudala uyu akakula lisa ? From ukupa upa manje chamutwala mukuma abakashi.Chabulanda sana.

    Thanks

  24. Karma at work indeed. Naomi what did you expect after destroying a family? I remember how your friend Kate and late Muzipasi suffered with their mother because of you. everything catches up. its your time now.

  25. It always comes round when you break a home. The family of the late are having the last laugh. I dont want any NGO to scream GBV they did nothing to help the first wife when Naomi was busy breaking this home.

  26. This, indeed, is a very sad development. That naomi chap is to blame. Obvisouly, she wants money but the man has no cash. so the gold digger is lookin to getting his assets once he is locked up. But she is mistaken coz zimba has friends in the PF government. Shamenda, save your friend. warning to men, especially old men, to avoid these small guys. They will eat your money and either run away or have you thrown in jail on flimsy ground.

  27. These are the last kicks of a sinking oldstead.u’ll surely reap what u sow!when u planted a gold digger Naomi,u could hv easily projected yr downfall.it has come 2 pass.nt too long it will be amudala abwezani’s time.

  28. Ah, cahenipa shuwa, balitileka anyinaMuzipasi? Ici cikacita adada aZimba cikaba ciheni ciuta wakubapanisya lino. That ka old dude wanted to be in Don Chichi’s league buthe went overboard. Lekani kasuzgyikepo danga.

  29. @Bupe.

Even if Sata can die today.Mr Bupe, HH can not make it to plot 1.God choose leaders.

Even in my dream i never find HH to be among would be presidents for this country.

A new leader will just emerge not even kabimba, chipimo,hh,nevers,or Magande is on that List of presidents Gazetted in the book of the CREATOR OF YOU AND ME.

Leaders come from humble background.Even you can be choosen by God.dont just blasphem, spill blood or agitate anarchy.God bless you!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. What goes around, comes around. Ba Newstead Zimba remember how you treated your wife and left her for that Naomi? You left your wife who bore you children for a young girl, now you see,YOU’VE TURNED HER INTO A PUNCHING BAG cause thats all she was from the begining a useless bag! Now that your money is finished she has started acting up, finding an excuse o leave. KABILI AMI CHENJESHA NAOMI, MWE CHILUKU ICHISHAKWATA AMANO. Zambian men learn from this useless man, never leave your wives for Gold diggers, NEVER!!!

  31. Naomi too young for bambo Zimba the man is too old to perform his duty in the private room its about jealous my advise to bambo zimba go back to your old wife and beg him to take you back its a good lesson to a lot of old people once you have money then you divorse your wife from kwacha township in kitwe..its time to avoid this kanieleles they just want your money…she was having an affaire because you are expired you dont have money and the battery is flat please bambo zimba the hour has come to go back to mai guru.

  32. Late Mazoka was presidential material. Plz look 4 someone to replace him Not some of thz we r seeing they ve never smiled Bushe tabanunka mukanwa.
