Director of the Catholic run Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection Fr Leonard Chiti says US President Barack Obama’s call on African countries to decriminalize homosexuality will not in Zambia.
Fr Chiti said Zambians have out rightly rejected demands to include laws that allow same sex relationships in the constitution.
“When you look at the draft constitution, you will see that Zambians have been categorical about their rejection of clauses that seem to allow rights for people of such orientations and I don’t see any change in that regard,” Fr Chiti said.
He added, “Moreover if Africans or Zambians in particular were to embrace same sex relationships, I believe it would be Africans themselves to make a choice and not anybody else telling them what to do.”
Fr Chiti said pushing for decriminalisation of homosexuality is a non-starter in Zambia.
“This is one thing I don’t see happening in Zambia because the people themselves have made it clear that they don’t want such lifestyles,” Fr Chiti said.
During his trip to Senegal as part of his three leg tour of Africa, US President Barack Obama hit out at discrimination against gays in Africa.

There are homosexuals in every society. The reason why the British colonial government introduced anti gay laws in Northern Rhodesia is testament to the existence of homosexuals then and now.
It is therefore very daft of you to say that Obama and Bush want to ‘introduce’ homosexuality to Africa. You do not introduce something that is already in existence. We the civilised people of this world are simply telling you to stop discriminating against people on grounds of their sexual orientation!

@Ndobo, the fact is the British introduced the law to cope with an existing ‘problem’! Nobody draws up legislation to deal with a problem that does not exist! They may have been influenced by their Bible myths but homosexual people were and are indeed present in our society. Is it possible for Zambia to introduce legislation to stop the killing of Tigers or sperm whales? I don’t think so; for we have neither sperm whales nor tigers in Zambia!

Is homosexuality a disease, a syndrome, a conditioning, a disability or something that the homos cannot do anything about? Are homos as they are out of personal desire or is it a cursed affliction? Someone needs to answer these questions before we subject these people to judgement. Are mad people happy to be mad?
Interesting questions Mukomwa. What ever philosophical position you choose ultimately they are sane an not mad and are therefore accountable for their actions like others. Genetics, religion, human rights, etc It can all be debated to a satisfactory point for some and not for others all with differing conclusions. The important points Fr Chiti made cover the fact that the majority reject it’s legality in Africa, it is not accepted as one of our customs and if ever Africans were ready to accept it then that will be their they choice, not because Obama orders us to. This really goes beyond just the gay issue but questions African sovereignty. If Americans decide tomorrow that fathers can marry their daughters who consent, will we then have to entertain and accept that also?

The Ugandan president gave a good response on hard talk to this threat of the West in tying aid to acceptance of gays. Saying that Africans are tolerant people and have not gone out attacking gays in the past though gays have always been around. Privacy of the home should be respected but today gays supported by the West want to ‘come out’ to the public and teach our children that being ‘gay’ is an acceptable way of life.
