Igesund- Sandilands’ Bafana future in Mweene’s hands

Chipolopolo keeper Kennedy Mweene’s presence in the Mamelodi Sundowns team is a threat to his team mate Weyne Sandilands’ place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Mweene started ahead of Sandilands in Sundowns’ league opener on Sunday.

But South Africa coach Gordon Igesund has warned Sandilands that he risks losing his Bafana place if he continue warming the bench at his club.

He was Bafana’s first choice keeper and captain at the 2013 COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Zambia last month.

“He (Sandilands) knows to be in the national team you need to play more consistently,” Igesund told Kickoff.

“And if he continues not to make the team for Sundowns then he is going to be a problem because you got to be competitive. That will open doors for goalkeepers like Ronwen Williams and Darren Keet.

Besides, Mweene and Sandilands Sundowns have two goalkeepers a Belgian plus another South African.

Mweene joined Sundowns last June from Free State Stars.

  1. Icho…. Mweene tachangasha chapampula abene bachalo, not no muZambian tatwangasha nga apwalala kupoka…., Yaguwa!

  2. Mweene is a 2012 African Champion. That’s a pretty much heavy CV. Sandilandi can do it, but to overlap a ‘ripe wine’ champion is quite a tall order, isn’t it?

  3. That Mweene relegated Sandilands and the other two goal keepers to the bench in the first game is good news indeed. I wish him well and hope he remains consistent in between the sticks.
The other added distinction for Mweene is that he is as good in goal as he is as an outfield player. That explains his penalty taking expertise and confidence.

  4. Mweene is a straight team player. Its suicidal to put Mweene on any bench. Its like putting Messi on the bench just because he joined a new team..

  5. Ai bambo kungenesa ma penalty si u outfield player. Tinali naena ma goalkeeper amene anali ma outfield players like Abraham Nkole ndi Efford Chabala both from Mighty. They played as strikers and used to score goals at the same time they were national goalkeepers. Mweene is rock solid in goal.

Simunanvetse chizungu malume. I did not imply that by taking penelties then Mweeene changes to an outfield player. No.What I meant is that Mweene is not only good in goal but also when he plays as a striker. That, I added, gives him an added distinction to drip with confidence when taking penalties.
Wish the lad well though. Thank you.
