Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has reiterated that her late husband Levy had wanted Ngandu Magande to succeed him as Republican President.

“That was his wish before he died and he had shared it with some of us that were close to him. He believed Magande firmly represented his vision for the party MMD and the nation at large,” Dr Mwanawasa said.

She added, “Even though Magande had gotten my late husband’s endorsement, it was not going to be automatic that he was going to win the elections, not at all.”

Dr Mwanawasa said the late President was highly impressed with Mr Magande’s stewardship of the economy.

“The truth is that, even if my late husband believed in Magande, I know for sure that there were others interested in challenging for the same position so it was not going to be automatic that Magande was going to succeed him,” she said.

“When he died, we had a duty to support what he had wished for. I believe those of us that he had confided in over his choice of Magande had a responsibility to ensure that his wish was honoured.”

Dr Mwanawasa advised opposition leaders to respect the government of the day.

“As a Christian nation, we have a duty to respect our leaders and the government of the day, let’s pray for them and guide them,” she said.

Dr Mwanawasa was speaking Sunday evening when she featured on a live Muvi TV programme called the Assignment ahead of her late husband’s memorial set for September 01, 2013.

    • well spoken,, it just goes to confirm what have always known, man`s ways are not God`s ways. No one must feel like a small god when they are leadership,, God the almight has his own ways and plans. Even those that are positioning themselves now within PF must be aware,, they might not end up leadering the country

This is the man who kept the national purse when copper was at its highest but has nothing to show forth in terms of infrastructure built-this is the man who sold zanaco for a song and gave kcm to the Indians -so what stewardship is she talking about.The debt cancellations were the work of jubilee 2000-this is the man who introduced fuel subsidies and maize subsidies that have drained the national coffers-l personally wold not cross the road to listen to him until he apologises for squandering the copper boom during his watch as finace minister

    • Whether picked or voted into office by the masses, Magande would have served this country in a more diligent and progressive manner than both RB and Sata – truth be told!

    • @Ndobo my brother, today’s presidency requires not only political but some sound knowledge of financial, developmental and legal matters, as well as a willingness to account and respect for others. Magande has all of this. Sata scores Zero in MOST of these attributes whereas RB has no respect for accountability.

I cant point at anything that Mwanawasa did except picking up money from state house in big envelops and running the country from the courts. At least Rupia did something as can be witnessed from the town ship roads he did. Please Mrs. Mwanawasa let your husband rest in peace. Magande is old enough to marshal support to become president on his own. Did Sata need the endorsement from anyone to become President?

  20. Zambia is a Democracy. It does not belong to the Mwanawasa family. Magande went to the elections and lost to RB and the Zambian people voted for RB. Presidency cannot be manufactured in the bedroom

  25. I believe Magande is the most suitable as president of this republic. If Mwanawasa’s wish was to have him as successor why then didn’t he place him in a strategic position as vice-president? It could have been easier for him to sail through election. But instead he went hunting in wrong place to pick a president, Eastern province of all places? And picking on RB for goodness sakes!? What was he thinking? Had Magande been president Zambia would have been solidly on the path to prosperity by now.

He did a lot for the country in the three short years he was president and are comforted by the fact that he is eligible to run for the presidency again.   30. Its not only Levy, but most progressive Zambians wanted Mugande to take over. And if MMD had not been so short-sighted and made that rational decision, MMD would still be in power today. And though seemingly against all odds, Magande is still a factor in terms of possible presidential candidates

    Again this man, Levy will never cease to amaze me. Even the passage of time cannot minimize how progressive his vision for this country was. What a a president Zambia lost!!

  31. Let’s forget and move on. RB had his own ups and downs like any body else. RB, honestly, did his best. He grew our strategic reserve account by 160% from US$1 Billion to US$2.6 Billion. For this I give him A+++ save for the allegations of corruptions against him now in the courts of law …..but let’s wait and see how these will end.

    Magande is still with us and has formed his own party. He is free to contest the presidency in 2016, after all he is far much younger than our next door Bob.

  34. Crown Prince needs to take bold steps to pave way for normal succession. This, Magande did not do. If Levy was responsible for that, then the two were wrong to play hide and seek. If VP succeeded by default, then at MMD National Conference, Magande needed to be introduced as first nominee. The likelyhood of acceptance would have been very high in the Party. However, perhaps the voters country wide would have picked an opposition party candidate for president.

  39. Mwanawasa was a lawyer, and he knew what was written in the constitution of Zambia. He should have made Magande Vice-President if he (Magande) was to succeed him. Maureen is getting her knickers in a twist by dwelling on her personal opinion. Besides she is very lucky not to have dragged to court for corruption and abuse of government resources perpetuated by her and the corrupt husband.

  42. Maureen’s lamentations are typical of the usual kitchen gossip. Does this former 1st-Lady know that there is a civilised system of electing leaders called DEMOCRACY? The MMD did not stop Magande from contesting for the party’s Presidential post. Democratic processes opted for RB. Thereafter, rather than congratulate the winner, Magande opted to mount the devilish campaign of demonising the victor – RB.

    Magande’s quest for leadership of the MMD at all costs revealed his cryptic (hidden) dictatorship genes.

    At this stage in time, what is Maureen trying to achieve? The best she can do is for her to join forces with Kabimba and Masebo to form a complete Sala/Soli/Lenje tribal party. Or else her lamentations at this hour are typical of the usual kitchen gossip. The truth will soon…
