The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has retained the Mkaika Parliamentary seat.

MMD’s Peter Phiri has polled in 9 054 votes to beat his closest rival David Phiri of the Patriotic Front (PF,) who is in the second place with 1 712 votes.

In third place is Nigel Mpakateni of the National Restoration Party (NAREP) with 161 votes followed by Nelson Mwale of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) in the fourth position with 136 votes.

The Mkaika constituency had 33 polling stations in which 11, 295 votes were cast.

A total of 232 votes were rejected.

The Mkaika by-election came about after PF’s David Phiri, who was then an MMD member of parliament and deputy Minister in the PF government, defected to the ruling PF.

This is a very good victory.Us in PF concedes defeat, but note that us in PF don`t get sleepless nights when we lose seats which belonged to the opposition in the first place.If anything in a proper democracy the voting pattern of the voters tends to remain the same for sometime, and the two years that our government has been in power is too short to change that pattern.An example being in America where certain states are traditionally for republicans and others for democrats.Enjoy celebrating for claiming a seat which belonged to you in the first place.

    Too sad that we can’t even really celebrate as our members who suffered at the hands of PF Kaponyas are now hospitalised and we now have to focus on seeing that they get well soon.

    Thank you Mkaika people for sending a strong message to our Kaponya friends that Democracy brought back to Zambia by our great party MMD is still alive and well and we shall defend it at all cost and no amount of thuggish behaviour will ever make us go back to old days of one party system.

    • The truth of the matter is that the PF as a party has very few intellectuals. Just take a look at the cabinet and deputies. It’s very depressing to think as a country we are led by such a crop of politicians. They found themselves in power on the back of lies and the vast majority of PF followers are unemployed youths who believed the lies of more jobs and more money in the pockets. The intelligentia of Zambia wouldn’t associate themselves with the violence espoused by PF, the few that have gravitated their direction are there for personal gains. Good luck PF!

      Do you really follow politics.Wynter is not the reason,but GBM.Wynther is a very good organiser,though himself may not win an election.The moment GBM started accusing Wynter that he was “adopting”his stooges and started sidelining him in these by elections,PF started losing.PF is yet to lose more because of GBM’s interference.GBM is not a good organiser,he thinks in terms of money on anything.As long as Wynter sits back with GBM and Lung in the fore front,PF will never win an election,not even Mansa Central.

  26. Well, Mpombo warned PF that they should handle Rupiah with sensitivity. He cited an an example in Kaunda’s era where easterners cannot be taken for granted. Soon PF will remain a shell of the Party. People like Mangani has no influence in Eastern province. Perhaps its time to call for general elections. Such defeat by the ruling party calls not only soul searching but general elections. For once let PF do the right thing and admit things are not well with them. All those opposition MPs serving in PF government is another message. Serve at your own peril. PF is sinking.

    PF will and can manage to manipulate the POLICE and SUPREME court for their advantage BUT it is not as SIMPLE to manipulate ALL the Zambian citizens.
    People KNOW the negatives of removing SUBSIDIES i.e. FISP fertilizer is K100.00 from K50.00 during MMD, increases in fuel, m.meal and other commodities.
    Statistically, PF has lost one vote in parley because D Phiri used to vote with PF and not MMD though he belonged to it. PF is only winning Mansa central of the four coming by-elections and lose the rest. It is good that the NCHELELEBULAS will be taught a lesson of their lives.
    PF make partnership with people and not parley. Bring development not arrogance you are showing us. 2000 jobs were advertised for newly created 29 districts, what has happened upto now

Remember the president has not been even for traditional ceremonies. He instead invites Chiefs to State House to belittle them. only Mpezeni has been bought. Other Chiefs are fed up. Mansa will signify the death of the PF. The other seats are already in the bag for MMD and UPND……

Sadly for the ruling party, this loss will not only leave an odious after taste but also looks like a loud and clear warning shot of what lies ahead of them. I have no atom of sympathy for David Phiri former MP who has been rejected overwhelmingly by the same people that voted for him only two years ago.
    The man created this by election. Surely wouldn’t the money that was spent have gone to lift the people of Mkaika Constituency from their miserable circumstances by way of Health Posts, drugs and boreholes to mention but a few? What value has he added to PF if not to expose the party to yet another loss and leave it bruised and battered.This must provide a salutory lesson to other like-minded MPs.

    • There are lessons here for our MPs to take note of.In general,seats are won because of the popularity of a Political Party.David Phiri was an elected MP on MMD ticket and a Deputy Minister as appointed by PF.He was voting with PF in Parliament.This was in a way a loss to MMD.What more did either PF or David Phiri want to gain by his defection from MMD to PF?   59. There is a fundamental shift in the way people perceive the ruling PF party now. Mkaika and the other 4 last bye elections were a good litmus test. PF must realise that it is no longer a Dora issue. Even a frog can win that seat against the PF. They have Luapula, Northern, Copperbelt, Muchinga, Lusaka, Part of Central, Part of Southern especially after the fantastic UNWTO meeting, they have revamped Livingstone. They have Chongwe area. Where these by elections are being held are some of the areas they are not porpular and they are yet to penetrate. It is not surprising. PF will win by a landaslide in 2016.

  83. There’s one thing common to presidents of Zambia, they never learn from their predecessors’ mistakes. People rejected KK because he failed to develop the country in 27 years of experimental rulership. Kafupi was booted out of his 3rd term dream to stash more money in zamtrop accounts. Levy did his best in his short term as president, in my view, Zambia’s best president. Then came RB and his kids to completely drive the country in a bewildering downwards spiral of corruption involving Nigerian scam artists. He was booted out unceremoniously by the long-suffering masses. Their last hope was the man of action. This was their last resort. They believed that since he cleaned Lusaka in the 80’s and humiliated lazy bones who reported late for work, he was the messiah they had been waiting…

    If anything what’s happened in Ngoniland is a pointer to the fact PF is finished in Zambia. They might as well surrender and hand over power to HH. They have failed.   97. This is primarily a lesson to David Phiri. Mkaika is an MMD stronghold. David won last time because of his affiliation to MMD and not due to HIS popularity. His defection was a foolish (and selfish) move; the defeat serves him right.

    However, there are lessons here for PF and Michael Sata as well. There are a lot of self individuals in PF who do not add value to the party. You will know them by the nonsense that emanates from their mouths; so irritating whenever they speak. Keeping these individuals in key positions is spelling doom for PF

    4. PF is associating with crooks and corrupt people, but no medicine in Eastern hospitals

David Phiri’s character- he got money from his father during the first elections and crippled the father’s business and never reimbursed it; he is egocentric, a loner and when his father travels to Lusaka the father travels on public transport (bus), and will not be allowed to spend nights at David’s house! The president was reported to have threatened that if the people of Mkaika don’t vote PF they would be denied development. One wonders, does development money come from his pocket?
    The people have taught him and his party a good lesson.

  112. Statistically, only David’s family voted for him. His wife, children sisters, brothers and his father had two or three wives if I remember correctly, meaning he has a lot of siblings, even when you give him the rejected votes he still is unable to win. He is pompous, arrogant, detached and very close to being callous. Even when he was at Unza back then, he made people around katete believe he was beyond reproach. That goes to show people.
