Government has described as very irresponsible and unpatriotic to the country the statement made by United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema. Mr Hachilema is quoted by the Post Newspaper urging Zambians to shun Independence Day celebrations because there is nothing to celebrate when majority Zambians are suffering.

Below is the full statement

Republic of Zambia
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services
STATEMENT BY HON. MWANSA KAPEYA, MP MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON ON UPND PRESIDENT’S CALL FOR PEOPLE TO SHUN THE 49TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS

The presence of MMD president Dr. Nevers Mumba and other opposition party leaders at the inter-denominational thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Sunday gives hope that government and the opposition could after all co-exist.

Dr. Mumba, National Revolution Party president Cosmo Mumba, NAREP vice president Mr. Charles Maboshe, Zambians for Empowerment and Development president Fred Mutesa and People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti were all present at the thanksgiving service.
As His Excellency, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, President of the Republic of Zambia remarked, “This is how we are supposed to live.”

The Thanksgiving services was meant to commemorate the country’s 49th independence anniversary and launch of the 2014 Golden Jubilee as Zambia celebrates 50 years of independence on October 24th, 2014.

Previously, the opposition leaders have shunned such special functions with stances such as “We have nothing to celebrate.”

But I must commend the opposition leaders who saw it befitting to be at the Cathedral on Sunday because they did this with the realization that Zambia is bigger than individual interests and that national interest comes first, especially for one vying for the presidency of the Republic.

This is what brings me to the UPND president Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr. Hichilema is quoted in today’s The Post as saying Zambians should shun Independence Day celebrations, and that there is nothing to celebrate when majority Zambians are suffering.

Government finds Mr. Hichilema’s statement very irresponsible and unpatriotic to the country and such statement should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.

As Zambians know, the commemoration of the independence of Zambia is not about the ruling Patriotic Front or its government. The commemoration of Zambia’s independence is about the country and its people and a tribute to our forefathers who fought for the freedoms that even Mr. Hichilema is celebrating today.

Mr. Hichilema is not punishing anyone by his stance, instead, he is simply showing contempt to those who fought for our rights, like first President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda and others dead or alive.

I do not intend to catalogue the PF government’s visible successes so far, but let me remind Mr. Hichilema that as opposition leader he has a duty to himself and to voters to play the role of an alternative government and indeed, uphold the importance of celebrating national events.

Mr. Hichilema must also accept that the PF was elected to rule and his role as opposition is constructive criticism and keeping alternative policies in view.

Encouraging people to shun independence celebrations is far from being an alternative policy, and therefore I urge Mr. Hichilema to act statesmanlike and in national interest.

Lastly, I would like to urge all Zambians to turn out in large numbers in their respective locations to celebrate our independence.

Those in Kitwe, should be proud that this year His Excellency, President Sata will be with them on Thursday to celebrate our independence in grand style.

HON. MWANSA KAPEYA, MP
MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON

  1. so ba mwansa kapeya, what have you achieved by releasing this press statement that has no substance in it? And honestly of all people, you have acknowledged ka cozmo mumba sure….ba mwansa kapeya, bu comedian …your postion is not in ifyabukaya. start working mudala

    • HH doesn’t care, well at least your ‘statements’ have your subjects believing you are relevant in your position

Irrelevant utterances. Ashamed of being Bemba

      Thanks

    • I thought HH would learn a lesson from the mistakes Sata used to make while in opposition. Such statements are very retrogressive and backwards. Independence day is not for Sata or HH. It is for us Zambians to celebrate what happened to our mother land way back before any of them ever thot of being presidents. Would HH want opposition leaders to do the same to him if he became president?

    • The same Sata PF opposition leader was no attending these evens in several year. Now that he is president…………… I am not supporting my UPND president no

    • Thats the problem with Zambians. You do not what to call a spade a spade and rather prefer useless blind patriotism … surely after 50 Years of Independence, a country which is a top producer of copper and abundant natural resources… with three quarters of Zambians living on US$1 with no basic health care, housing and water…

Tell me what is there to celebrate? HH i support you 100% i absolutely see nothing to celebrate about

    • The problem with Mwansa Kapeya always thinks its Kabusha Takolelwa Bowa programme or ifyabukaya bemba radio comedy. How can we celebrate independence when we do not have jobs and under paid whilst you guys increase your salaries at will and supersonic speed.

    • This is work … exposing the enemies of Zambia, people who hate unity, as a people, we all strogly feel about many things in Zambia but we shall never put the nation at a whole lower tahn our feelings.

    • HH you are becoming useless day by day. You have completely run out of the strategy if at all you had to defeat Sata. Stop iratating Zambians by your irresponsible statements. Be constructive opposition leader please.

    • @TheEngineer(Australia) at least you should be appreciative of the free education that came with Zambia’s independance.

    • I appreciate the free education and i was one of the people who got it…. after 50 years is that what we should be celebrating?

    • Folks
Lets not be petty about independence celebrations? How many of you have ever celebrated it?
Independence celebration is a personal choice. Who said it is compulsory? I have never celebrated it my whole life.

Some are saying we have to the duty to celebrate what our fore fathers achieved!
What did our fore father achieve? Do they mean delivering us from the shackles of a white man into a slavery den of our own people?

Those who feel independence is working for them at the moment let them celebrate. And those not happy with economical and political situation at the moment have a choice to shun the celebration just like KING COBRA-SATA shunned the celebrations when in opposition because the system was not working for him.

Today Sata can celebrate his personal…

    • I totally agree with you.. if Ukwa and is gang of thieves think independence has made them arrive they can celebrate it.. lets not force the millions of zambians who have nothing to show for the so called independence to be dancing with you

    • With or without PF or any other party in power, INDEPENDENT is what I AM, and therefore, I’ll celebrate independence, even if it’s in my own style. To a large extent, I am able to determine the way I live. I therefore found rather foolish and shallow HH’s urgings for citizens to boycott indepence celebrations.

    • Ba Engineer (Australia), so what do you think HH will achieve in 2 years after he becomes president (if he will at all)? Will citizens be discouraged from celebrating Independence Day if he will have achieved little or nothing at all? People, stop being myopic and try to understand the meaning of Independence Day. Will someone stop celebrating his birthday just because he has not achieved anything in his life or at least be thankful to God that he was given the gift of life?

    • Independence celebration is not a creation of the PF. It was there in UNIP, MMD and now PF. it will be there after you, HH, are a goner. Every other country has been celebrating independence, including the USA. What is your problem?

Do not be like those Israelis who told Moses whilst in the wilderness that they lived better in Egypt, that Moses was so wrong to bring them out of Egypt. But lo and behold, they just to start the journey and become self determining.

The important thing is that we have started the journey. We were liberated 49 years ago and must constantly remind ourselves of our self determination and will to craw, walk and fall, yet stand up and continue. ZAMBIA is definitely moving towards prosperity. DEVELOPMENT IS NOT AN EVENT, BUT A PROCESS. Lekeni ubukopo guys ala!

    • It seems the PF Govt have just learnt two new words IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC. Now every critique statement or action HH or other opposition leaders make is IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC.

The Visit to UTH – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
Against the Budget – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
Against removal of subsidies – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
PF appointments tribalistic and nepotism – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
Militia Training in Sudan – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
President is sick and in India – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
Bye election are a drain on govt coffers – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC
Corruption is rampant now – IRRESPONSIBLE and UNPATRIOTIC

    • You are also useless like HH. Is it the first time he has done that? That is his nature. DONT VOTE FOR HH IN 2016, INSTEAD VOTE FOR FRANK BWALYA FOR PROSPERITY.

  2. Mbuya baKapeya – please don’t quote the “past” newspaper, they have been mis-quoting pipo too many times in the past few weeks. Can you please quote HH, not third parties.

  3. HH.
    (1) I have been looking for you. Where were you when Shoprite workers were threaned with dismissal.

    (2) I saw that you gave solidality to nurses and nothing to shoprite workers. What did that mean? Do you have interests in shoprite?

    Mwansa Kapeya
Tell me what patriotism is there with your PS Emmanuel Mwamba concerning the way you are running the public media? ZNBC, DAILY MAIL, TIMES OF ZAMBIA. As usual ifya bukaya.

  4. HH grow up, it’s not everything that you gain political mileage on. Your utterances of inciting people to stay away from independence celebrations are pure insults to people that fought and died for our independence. How old were you? You have completely misunderstood the meaning of Zambia’s independence, as always you are so focused on self.

    • Observer grow up……Mwansa Kapeya is quoting the Post who allegedly “quoted” HH on this statement. I would hold on to my repsonse until I verified HH’s statement……but of course if I were a PF Cadre, I would jump at any opportunity to trash HH!

    • Just a Question; Did MCS attend any indipendence celebrations while he was in OPPOSITION or Did he ever encuorage people to attend when in Opposition? Because if he didn’t, then, the current OPPOSITION parties MUST do as he did.
Afterall, for GOD’s sake, HE promised to rule the country using BIBLE commandement where one of them states, ‘DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE THEM DO UNTO YOU’.
So, if he did attent during LPM and RB, then these oppositions MUST attend and encourage others to do so during MCS’s rule. Please someone remind me how MCS carried himself during such events when in opposition….

    • HH needs serious advisers or he risks losing the plot.On this issue he has just lost an opportunity to bring his flight to the fore.He is still being prosecuted for attmpting to enjoy his rights of movement, speechn etc and he should have said that we should boycott because the rights we artained at independence are being curtailed.Even our ifya bukaya clown would have had no reasonable rebuttal.

  5. HH is very right..what is there to celebrate ..?Zambians are in abject poverty and you are busy causing by elections..viva HH..who cares about KK..thats what he chose to do ala..

  6. I agree with Mwansa Kapeya on this one,Zambia is bigger than individual interests and that national interest comes first. Our national independence is about Zambia and not political parties. There are important things that Mr HH can bring to the attention of the nation than what he is doing now. The direction that he has taken is slowly finishing the opposition leader and if he is not careful,Zambian will never entrust him with the responsibility of leading our great nation. One Zambia,One Nation.

  7. What is truly irresponsible and unpatriotic is the way this PF govt is driving zambia into the abys thru infighting, greedy raises and losing focus on the agenda of national development.HH is just echoing the obvious truth.

  8. so HH can set the fire, I thought he was nothing. this means the message goes and they pretend not to hear it. Bo HH come again to Northern side of the country please…………….

    • To do what in the Northern side of Zambia. H.H was see all those people who gathered together as Bembas.. Mumba, Sata, Kaunda, Cosmo, Mulongoti, Chipimo etc to him all are Bembas and he can not be among them. that is how come he will never be Repulican President. Some one who does not smile, I can not vote for.

  9. Now that the table have change, you have decided to change the rules of engagement. Sata did not participate in any of the national events in his time as opposition leader. What has change, the principle is the same

  10. HH is correct, there is nothing to celebrate. We haven’t anything to proudly exhibit as the fruits of independence. Instead we have thousands of graduates, educated at great expense by the ever suffering tax payer, who have fled the country to enrich others. We can’t blame them, they have to escape the harsh and frustrating conditions at home. We shouldn’t even have fought for independence. Half a century of so-called independence has just demonstrated how inadequate the leaders are to the job of developing the country. What kind of development is it when, 50 years down the line, the formally employed population is still under half a million? To paraphrase bashi Lubemba, this so-called independence was actually an act of ‘shooting ourselves in the foot with a huge log’.

    • When you go to College, you must think before you do a course. suppose you do Business adminstration. whose business are you going to adminster, is it your Father,s Business? or Production Manager, that is how you will walk the street. Do courses which make you do your own business.

  11. Clueless scoundrels in authority inimical to our common will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism, and find criticism subversively unpatriotic. One Great rights activists, “Samuel Johnson’s saying that patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels has some truth in it but not nearly enough. Patriotism, in truth, is the great nursery of scoundrels, and its annual output is probably greater than that of even familiar madness. Its chief glories are the demagogue, the drivers of poverty and false history. Its philosophy rests firmly on the doctrine that the end justifies the means–that any blow, whether above or below the belt, is fair against dissenters from its wholesale denial of plain facts.”

    H.L. Mencke

  12. Alah, but Sata himself never used to attend these functions. When he did, he was just about insulting Levy or Bwezani. I actually for a change concur with HH, who wants to be close to an erratic urine carrying foul smelling lumpen whose only preserve is tribalism, insults and looting state coffers! Nobody. Besides, who knows maybe Sata’s renal failure is contagious!

  13. If you understood the full implication of colonial rule, you would never mistake it with financial success. It is better off to be poor and free than poor and punished for being poor. HH himself is a beneficiary of independence through privatization and must refrain from making such statements. I do not support the policies of the Government, but I cannot claim I am not independent simply because am poor.

  14. I`m not surprised that HH gave such an irresponsible statement.Which country in Africa doesn`t have poor people ? This is a common problem in countries including in America where there are a bunch of people depending on welfare. High time he stopped cheap politics. Explains why he didn`t attend when most of his fellow opposition leaders were t the cathedral.Hikainde has issues.

    • @ sauloni
I can see a European flag on your comment. a sign that you are not in Zambia. bazungu left you to govern yourself, but you were rendered useless because of poverty hence you decided to follow them and start cleaning their butts. so what is there to celebrate? HH is simply stating a fact. comeback and celebrate if you are truthful with what you are defending

    • Ha ha ha Matipa please !!! Ignorance will kill you. This is not a flag for any country. It is a European union flag.My friend education opens so many doors.Right now with my qualifications i have an option of working almost anywhere in the world and it is the reason why i`m here. Those stories about those cleaning butts might be true for some people but no Saulosi.Just get yourself some good education bro. These politics will end up chocking you.Easy !!!

    • @sailoni
thanks for insinuating that am not schooled but I do not feel offended because your assumption is false. the issue is what do you want us Zambians who are resilient to remain and develop our country should celebrate on 24th October when majority are wallowing in poverty caused by your pf, are you probably a “kandile”?

  15. Sata’s personal secretary is trying to set up a computer new password for the acting president, one Nyanja mambala called Catancrous Tujilijili aLungu. Lungu, na chigololo chake puts, “Mypenis,” and Mulenga the secretary falls on the carpet in a fit of laughter because on the screen it says, “Error. Not long enough.”

  16. Indeed brother Deus, this masonry way of doing things amazes me too. How on earth does a leader incite nurses to continue their strike at the expense of the suffering patients, how can a leader worth his salt support the continuous embalment of the general populace by zambeef just because he has shares in the company and as if this is not enough he is now inciting zambians to shun independence celebrations. Shame.

  17. Wise words from HH. Better looking roads on the c/b are being Scrapped off and yet majority zamblans elsewere have very poor roads.. Regionalism or lack of priority ??

  18. What is there to celebrate when Sata is busy entertaining tribalism and divisions in our beloved country? Why should suffering Zambians be made to parade and celebrate Sata’s success in looting our country of the meager resources that we have? Sata is busy empowering himself and his fellow Bemba crooks and now expects the rest of us who are disadvantaged by these gluttons to accept being abused by them in these celebrations. They are eating while the rest of Zambians go hungry. You Kapeya you don’t know what you are talking about. HH is patriotic, that’s why he is persuading us to shun these cosmetic celebrations when most Zambians are unhappy with Sata’s leadership style.

  19. Comedy at its best. Your children at home even get happy when they see you back from work saying “Daddy is back from WORK” yet all you did was to write such rubbish like this!!!!

  20. Let those who want go & celebrate Sata’s salary increament while many Zambians go hungry, no medicine in hospitals, low salaries for civil servants, no education for a poor Zambian. HH you have our support!

    • You are very naive and myopic. Independence celebration is not about celebrating PF govt achievements but what our forefathers achieved.

  21. HH is free to say what in his opinion is right,we enjoyed our freedom from 1964 up to the time kaunda high jacked the country to become his fiefdom and we became his serfs.now pf is ag again taking us back to kaundas days, must we be dancing like kaunda does even in church? This is time to reflect.

  22. The opposition was unpatriotic enough to engage globalist lawyer Robert Amsterdam and his Chatham House (RIIA) registered lawfirm Amsterdam and Peroff, to slander the government of Zambia on the international gallery.

The problem is that they cannot compete on policy, because their policy is not wanted by the people of any country. Neoliberalism is a dead ideology, and yet it is all they have, because they want to appease the IMF/World Bank/etc.

Slandering the country is the only thing that is left to them.

  23. HH my president, your president & our president has spoken. Thumbs up our president in waiting, Zambia waits for you also!

  24. In as much as HH has a point in shunning the celebrations, he could have attended the ceremonies in honour of the freedom fighters, but refuse to partake of the goodies at the banquet.

    • When those who fought for the freedom are turning in their graves? The freedoms they fought for a curtailed by government, the tribalism they uprooted is given roots and is now anchoring a few souls etc? Shame on them!

  25. There is no country in europe which is giving employment to Foreigners which is meant for it’s Citizens. when you are in Europe mostly you do dish washing, packing and all those silly jobs. except for Doctors and Nurses and Probably Teachers. other good paying jobs are may be you become a thief or a drug pedler or a miner with your own portable mine you just hire people who can drill and blast. other wise be in Zambia.

  26. I am in Solwezi today.

I ve Walked the breadth and width of this “Very Rich” Zambia Town. I can see tens of trucks and trucks carrying heavy machinery to and mineral ores from the many mines.

I also see that there are only three Tarmac Roads, dust all over. No grader or sign of roadworks at all. No University in the whole province is being constructed. Yet in one province I wont mention, I counted over ten major road works going on, even in smaller villages. Two major universities under construction etc. Yet that province is literary a parasite province. God forbid.

  27. This is the most useless statement from a very dull minister. What is unpatriotic by asking the president not to be greedy and not take up the salary increment which he doesn’t deserve in the first place. There is nothing to celebrate when there is so much suffering and abuse of human rights by the most useless government ever. HH is right!

  28. HH is right. Government functions are a drain on nation’s resources. Same cadres and well to do people attend functions, eat, enjoy and sing praises for each other.
Ban all government functions, seminars, meetings.

  29. Lusakatimes, it is being circulated that Kabimba is fired and what is left is just a formality. Scott is planning to resign from Government.

  30. Yes, it has been resolved by the PF Central Committee that Kabimba has been fired and Guy Scott has been warned! More to come….

  31. Can anyone tell me how many Zambians celebrate independence? All we do is stay at home as it is a holiday. So, do zambians celebrate independence apart from those who go to march? So how can one celebrate when human rights are deteriorating?

  32. The true meaning of the word, “independence” is broad. Independence does not mean being free from the bondage of the white man or whatever. It also fundamentally means the economic independence. Our forefathers won us freedom. We need to attain economic freedom. As a matter of fact, true independence goes with economic independence. Let us all celebrate our “independence” remembering that we have some work to do, to achieve economic freedom.

  33. HH what you are doing is the shadow of what PF used to do when MMD was in power boycott African freedom day, Boycott Labour day and they also boycotted Independence day , the only party that attended was that of Shalupwa and Nevers Mumba. My dear to boycott is your birth right

  34. Mwansa kapanya nangu kashouder,
KK used to say “c2pd I.D.I.O.T.S” am now using the same on Mwanya Kapanya, which national event was. The Chief Liar celebrating whilst in opposition? Tell us iwe “callo way”
Free advice: brace your selves after 2016, the same things you are doing today will be done to you.
You go and quarrel with Kabimba if you don’t have what to say, but be on the look out for Masebo, tafula bwino….

  35. Celebrating 99.9% Bemba tribal appointments in cabinet, parastatal, diplomatic service, civil service, Defense & Security etc. Reason to celebrate indeed – for Bembas!

  36. I know HH was not talking to children but grown up who can make choices, make your choice Mr government spoke person

  37. The minister could be right. It is wrong for your family members to refuse to come and celebrate your birthday just because they are on sick bed suffering from acute malnutrition.

  38. Independence celebrations are not a creation of the PF. It was there in UNIP, MMD and now PF. it will be there after you, HH, are a goner. Many countries have been celebrating independence, including the USA. What is your problem?

Do not be like those Israelis who told Moses whilst in the wilderness that they lived better in Egypt, that Moses was so wrong to bring them out of Egypt. But lo and behold, they just had to start the journey and become self determining.

  39. Some Zambians like Hh and his bloggers can be fo olish especially ichi chi tribalist called engineer australia.U demon ,Sata shunned such because of the violence meted on him by the dying mmd.Whom can u hoodwink?U’ll even copy deafacating.

    • you point one finger at the engineer as the demon, the remaining four fingers are pointing at you as four times more demon than the person you accuse. the person you purport to be a demon actually produces more sense in his contributions than yours which are full of envy and jealous of HH and worse still tribal hegemony. shame on you, change my brother, do not vent your anger on innocent people who are not the ones who told you to go and clean butts kumangalande uko

  40. I mean u will even imitate ‘ukunya’.Are your minds so infested with demons that u cann’t remember the evil political enviroment that st upid mmd created? Even yo dull leader was at one time a victim. Which poverty has pf and Sata caused in 2yrs?

  41. osmore you are very dull ***** completely blindfolded by ill gotten money.i wonder how such useless crap like you manage your family .where is our god?

  42. – What is there to celebrate about?
    – The country has gone to the dogs or the dogs have come to the country
    – Tribalism is rife and alive again
    – The embassies are full of ntolelefye nshibile mukwayi
    – I am divorcing my Bemba wife because of Sata
    – Kaunda throttled the country, Chiluba creamed it off then Mwana Wasa (mwanaAisa) or Mwanawasa gave it the medicine it needed to get better and the country was recovering very well until misfortune hit us – Mwana-Waona (Umwana Alala) MHSRIP
    – Banda tried but lost the plot and then came the destroyer – SataN himself!
    – Tried to delete Southern Province the bread basket of the country from the map and turn it into a basket case
    – Muted leadership in the 25months he has been in power
    – What is there to celebrate, hunger, unemployment…
    -…

  43. When I was at primary school independence day used to be a day you surely look up to. On this day we would god with our plate, spoon, fork and knife. The school would slaughter cattle for the independence feast. The celebrations would include several cultural dances and lots of food. Alas today this day has truly become meaningless! There is hunger all over! HH is right something has gone wrong with our leaders.

  44. All I can see in this boy is that, his not analytical, if at all he did a bit of mathematics it would have opened up his mind to see through things

  45. i wonder why everyone keeps on bringing the kaunda story here when they hear the word independence for me independence was only gotten by FTJ can you call kaunda’s kind of rule democratic?he was infact the worst president Zambia has ever had he felt immortal whilst his friends were dying busy insulting every Zambian and now his got the gats to stand before us and sing”we shall fight and conquer AIDS”my bum!il never forgive you kaunda

  46. under 5, we want you to proved checks and balances , offer solution where posible then we will look at you as the next leader not the way you are doing things!

  47. This is what i have long been saying of the lack of maturity in Zambian politics.Even most bloggers here don’t understand that some things have nothing to do with Politcs. Weather HH come in power or in 100 years to come poverty will still be in the country .HH if he comes into power will never solve Zambia’s Poverty in 5 years.Independence Celebrations are to say thank you to our forefathers that delivered this country to us and for him even Sata when he shunned them was Childish and not objective.I wish you all could look at the Patriotism that the so called developed countries have.In the united states no politician in his right senses would say what HH has said otherwise his political carrer is over.
Learn to be sober minded, objective and Mature HH!
