Transparency International Zambia has condemned People’s Party President Mike Mulongoti for deliberately distorting TIZ President Lee Habasonda’s statement on politicians not being trusted.

TIZ Information Officer Mubiana Nalwendo explains that Mr. Habasonda’s remarks emanates from empirical evidence including results from various studies worldwide as well as Zambia Bribe Payers’ Index (2012) which indicates that the general public do not adequately trust politicians in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Nalwendo says TIZ therefore finds Mr. Mulogoti’s attacks on TI Zambia unwarranted and unnecessarily aggressive.

He has urged Mr. Mulongoti to stop pretending that Zambia does not have a sad record of politicians who speak eloquently about fighting corruption in opposition but fail to deal with the scourge once in power.

Mr. Nalwendo has since challenged Mr. Mulongoti to tell this nation what he did to address corruption while he served as Minister in the MMD government and should stop pretending to be Holier than thou.

He has further challenged Mr. Mulongoti to instead concentrate on telling the nation what he will do to fight corruption if ever he is given the distinction of ruling Zambia.

Yesterday, Opposition People’s Party Leader Mike Mulongoti castigated Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) for having stated that politicians cannot be trusted in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Mulongoti wondered whether the TIZ itself can give guarantee that they are made up of clean people when in fact they are human beings just like Politicians.

Mr. Mulongoti said that it was unfortunate that TIZ has turned round thereby accusing one group of people when if the TIZ is inspected properly mistakes it made in the past would be spotted.

Mr. Mulongoti had since advised TIZ to be conscious in what they state because they are not angels of Zambia.

Mr. Mulongoti said that the country needs people who are willing to work together in order to fight corruption as corruption can never be eliminated but instead reduced at all cost.
