Mulenga inspires Zambia to sweet victory over Congo

Share

Zambia today shifted from 3rd top 2nd in Group 11 in their 2008 Africa
Cup qualifiier against Congo-Brazzaville that they won 3-0 at Konkola
stadium in Chililabombwe.

Coach Patrick Phiri discribed the victory as sweet as Zambia lie 3
points on 7 behind South Africa who swept aside bottom placed Chad 4-0
in Durban.

“The victory was sweet for Zambia and this victory has put us back on
track on the road to the Ghana finals,” Phiri said.

“This is not the time to worry about South Africa but let’s celebrate
this victory and later concentrate on Chad (at Konkola in a fortnights
time),” Phiri said after Zambia ended a 180 minute goal draught.

Meanwhile the match suffered one-hour late after Sudanese referee
Abdel Raham missed his flight to Zambia on Thursday and only arrived in Ndola just three
hours before kickoff.

When the match finally got under way, Zambia took the lead in the 14th
minutes through striker and man-of-the-match Jacob Mulenga of French
Ligue 2 club Chateauroux after he connected with a Mbesuma cross.

The hosts could have gone 2-0 seven minutes later through striker Christopher
Katongo of Brondy in Denamrk whose shot was saved by Barbel Mouko.

Zambia’s second goal came a minute before the hour mark after a fast start
to the final 45 minutes when defender Christel Kimbembe headed into his own
net under pressure from Mulenga.

60th minute substitute Songwe Chalwe made it 3-0 11 minutes after
coming on when he poked-in another fine assist from the on-form Mulenga.

Zambia could have been 4-0 on 75 minutes when a subdued Mbesuma saw
his second best chance of the day from a header after seeing his 1st
minute shot saved ruled offiside by late-show Raham.

Two minutes later goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene made a fine stop tipping over a
header from Vivien Bantimba to deny Congo a consolation goal as the away
side tried but failed to dominate their hosts in the final minutes.

  1. Great Job Guys. Please do not sideline all proffessionals see what Mulenga has done. In Soccer it not the league you play in but the displine and hard and commitment self improvement. Go Zambia and congrats!!

Twelve fans die at Zambia game

Reports say twelve Zambian fans died at the Chililabombwe stadium
There are reports that twelve fans were killed and up to 20 injured as celebrations turned to a crushing stampede at the Chililabombwe stadium, in Zambia on Saturday.
The fans were celebrating Zambia’s 3-0 win over Congo, in the country’s Group Eleven Cup of Nations qualifying match, as they exited the stadium.

The Chief of Police in the Copper Belt region of the country, Antoneil Mutenthwa said: “A stampede ensued as too many fans tried to squeeze through the few exits available.

“Twelve people have been killed, 9 men and 3 women.”

It is thought none of the travelling contingent from Congo were injured.

Provincial minister Mwansa Mbulakulima is expected to travel to the region to assess the situation. “

  6. It is a massive win, thanks to the boys.
But as we celebrate this victory, let`s join the mourners for the fans that we have lost……….
    Blessed are those who mourn………..

  7. Having humiliated Congo, we only need two more victories over Chad & RSA to make it Ghana 08. GO ZAMBIA GO!!… and i know u can do it.

  11. Everytime they play in chilis something bad alwayz happens.sad day,iam not cerebration the win coz lives have been lost .

  12. I do not know whether to congratulate or sympathise.During such a trying momemnt I remember those two ladies who did that song in Zambia implying that you can’t laugh and cry at the same time. My condolences to the families of those who lost their beloved ones during the football match. MTSRI

  13. Sincere condolences, 9 men & 3 women all of them no more, what a BIG LOSS, The Govt should speed up the contruction of BIGGER Stadia or else we will continue losing lives at such unifying events.

  14. I heard the news from BBC and saw this on their website but I could not just believe until these morning. MY memories brought back of our fallen heroes and their families. Iam sad and mourn with you people who has lost family members. I was even in great pain when I learnt that among the dead are children. It is difficult celebrate when you are in sorrow.

  15. Congrats Chipolopolo! Well done. It shows that coaches should cast their nest wider. Next time the technocal bench should also include Nsofwa Chaswe and Philemon Chipeta. The scorers in this match were returnees jacob Mulenga and Songwe Chalwe, keep it up boys. My worry is withMbesuma , he has gone as many games in this years’ qualifiers without scoring. Pull up boy!

  16. Mbesuma will rise to the occassion my brother Chips 24 you should have seen him in action ,some times it is the contribution you make to the game that matters,on a solem not my ccondolences to the famillies who lost love ones after a stampeed at the end of the game our thoughts are with you.

  17. congratulations to the players and the coarching staff.job well done.hope we do the same against chad, and i know we will.and to the lost lives may their souls rest in peace and may God bless the families they left behind.

  18. Congratulations Chipolopolo boys !! we knew you would do it..it’s a very good gesture!keep up Patrick phiri and the boys.

  19. Justice, I have not heard you congratulate the boys. What is your case kamudala?.Give credit where it is due. Now you are distracting our attention to this kamamgala issue. What is your case?

Anyway congrats to the lads. Well played and may the souls of our departed compatriots rest in peace.

    Viva Zambia. Aluta continua

  20. kemps I have been touched by the news of those who died. Kamudala ninebo chi mudala mune

  21. Please investigate this matter fully. Eye witnesses say Police closed the gates when people were trooping out.
In future, use trained and experienced police and not those recruits, to man these gates
May the soul of our departed brothers and sisters rest in eternal peace

  22. The kamangala issue is very personal, bushe iwe do u have a problem? I have been reporting on Zambian soccer for some time now. Ala iwe. Abantu nga ba fwa I can not celebrate og congratulate anyone. It is sad what has happened

  23. Dangote I am with you. I am shocked, we win and people are killed. When I heard the news I was hoping it was not true. I mean where are we heading? If what you write is true then Police in Chief must be fired. Why should people die after watching a football match. I do not know to write

  24. It’s really good news to hear that Congo-Brazza. has been cut to size. The Chipolopolo boys, do concentrate & focus on yet another weak side Tchad in the very near future.

You certainly derseve a big finger. In the mean time I enjoy my castle.

    Cheers Guys!!
    Joseph

  25. Fans dying at grounds is because of using old antiquated stadiums. We cant tolerate this any longer….How can you have a stadium with only two entrances in this day and age? Government must build new stadia!

  26. Well done Chipolopolo! I didn’t watch the match but I think the the three pronged attack of Mulenga, Mbesuma and Katongo will be a serious threat in future. We have traditiionally employed a 4-4-2 but Coach has bravely experimented with 4-3-3 with great results. Few have congratulated Pat Phiri. I think he is doing a stellar job at the helm. We always talk of employing expatraite coaches… why not send ba Phiri for an advanced course abroad?

  27. Do we still need expartriate coach? I dont think so , give Phiri autonomy to do what is best for him and Am sure he will succeed that what KK was advocating last month. That is retrogressive thinking.
Via Chipolopolo guys keep it up.FAZ must explain the accident.

  28. It was pay back time for congo whose juniors hammerd our young under 20s. Any way,our celebration is cut short ,due to the death of our beloved ones.M.T.S.R.P!!!

  29. It is the same old story, promises of a new stadium. Govt do not care. Just imagine they gave a rotten Buffalo plane to the National squad that perished in Gabon. Our national is not for Govt but os people. I get mad when I hear a ka minister saying Govt has given FAZ so and so much, it is TAX PAYERS MONEY for helvede (hell). I think Zambian poeple have really sacrified but all we get are empty promises from ZAMTROOP owners

  30. I have a proposal. We zambian soccer fans start a chatroom for soccer only. I am considering coming up with a web site for Zed soccer chat. What do u think lads

  31. Congrats guys. Keep to winning ways in all your future matches as a tribute to those who tragically gave up their lives at this game and our fallen heroes.

  32. Thanks the chipolopolo boys for making us proud, even in the midst of the sahara desert we the zed folks are celebrating your sweet victory.Next hammer the bafana bafana to shut them up as the think they are greater than us-long live zambia national team continue making us proud

  33. diana mfula my sweetie you never wrote to me to tell me the score line but never the less i managed to get it – well done the live bullet (you are now the real chipolopolo) so proud of you. Patric Phiri job well done, i ‘ll send you some sudanese dinars as a token of appreciation especially after beating bafana bafana

  34. Sweet victory for Zambia. I know Chad will be massacred in a fortnght. We need to embarrass Bafana here in SA. They seem to be on cloud nine.
So sad though that some soccer fans died.

  35. Justice Kafusha, we are together in mourning and it was a very sas day for Zambia but all this goes back to the type of leadership our country has.

Surely, 43 years post independence, we have failed to come up with a single decent structure for a staduim. It is sad indeed to lose lives like this. I hope we will learn something from this. But do we ever learn? I hope fifa does not order us to play our next home match in an empty stadium (without fans).

However, our chances of qualifying are very high as I have hope that we can beat and shame the boys-boys (bafana-bafana) at their own home grand to show them that boys will be boys.

Now iwe Justice bushe ba Jack Kafusha formerly of Nkana ni ba bululu bobe? Twebe.

    Otherwise enjoy day mates.

  36. Justice,

By the way, asoccer website will make a lot of sense. Go for it CHIMUDALA. YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT

  37. The match was poorly played, boring, am even surprised how they ended up winning. Is sad lives have been lost, something has to be done to avoid it happening again….

  38. # 56,Jean, better a ‘poorly played, boring’ winning match than a lost one full of sparks. Points are what counts, if Zambia expects to feature @ Ghana2008. In any case, why use a bazooka to kill an ant. Reserve it for mightier opponents! Secondly, perhaps this was one Coach Phiri’s tactics…..it yielded the results.

  39. #57 MK (Windhoek)

    Well thought and well said.

Football is about goals.Entertaining football comes after the points are collected. We do not need entertainment now. We need results and fortunately they are coming.

    Go Zambia Go

  40. The way things are going at the moment, I feel it will come to who scored a lot of goals. With that thought in mind let Coach Patrick Phiri use players that can create chances and score goals because at the end of the day will have same points with South Africa but inferior goal difference. Its a good thing that FAZ has lined-up and friendly match with Tanzania this weekend (job well done) and so this is an opportunity to include aggressive (in good way) players and assess them to and make sure that South Africa won’t bum us at Ghana 2008. I’m talking about Chaswe Nsofwa, Ian Bakala, Issac Chansa and Philemon Chipeta. Just a few weeks ago Songwe Chalwe was thought to be finished but he came in and proved the critics wrong by scoring one for Zambia.

  42. What we should know is that the national team messed itself when they lost to south affrica in the opening game.Already south affrica have 10 points and we have 7 points. Even if we beat chad here at home and south affrica loses to congo this will not improve any situation on because it will be very difficult for zambia to beat south affrica on their home ground. So even if we are celebrating its just a temporal measure considering the points we have at the moment.
