LUSAKA City Council (LCC) Mayor Mulenga Sata yesterday declared his intention to contest the position of Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) president to serve councils more efficiently and effectively.

Mr Sata disclosed yesterday in Lusaka after addressing council retirees who stormed his office that the position will enable him to serve councils more efficiently as the challenges they face are the same.

“I can confirm that there was a report that I wasn’t standing but after consultations and the support from stakeholders, including councillors, and as LCC, I felt the urgency and importance of this call. I am making myself available for the position of LGAZ president,” Mr Sata said.

The elections are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week.

Earlier, there was commotion at LCC grounds after council retirees demanded to be addressed by Mr Sata concerning their pension. Calm only returned after security personnel were called in.

Speaking on behalf of retirees, Mr Japhet Zulu said they have suffered for a long time and he charged that there was a lot of financial indiscipline at LCC, hence the delay in receiving their retirement package.

“Please speak on our behalf so that our plight can be looked into. Some of us retired 33 years ago. There is financial indiscipline here [LCC]. People owe debts but don’t want to pay back and we want this to stop,” Mr Zulu said.

In reply, Mr Sata said he would table the matter with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing so that all retirees could be cleared before the end of this year.

“I am making a commitment, and will engage the Ministry of Local Government so that everyone is cleared before the end of this year. The Patriotic Front is a listening government and will look into your concerns. You are free to visit and dialogue with me if you feel there won’t be progress over this matter,” he said.

  1. Now that this Mulenga is standing, we shall see if Daniel Chisenga, immediate past Lusaka Mayor who had earlier expressed interest in the position will go ahead and contest

    • So what if you stood. Not a big deal.

What thing you need to know is “Folks are waiting for Daddy to kick the bucket soon, you will not even be adopted as a Councillor in 2016”.

  2. Seize the opportunity by the throat!Balange boi!Eochakalipa ese ambone……..Viva boi, efyobamba nififine. And remember, never be afraid to start something, the ark was built by amateurs and professionals built the titanic!

  3. May be his dna not his name don’t you know that what was in the father could also appear in his son just wait

  4. Don’t fear him just compete,if you are better you will win intact his father will not vote, if people like him he will carry the day

  5. The phrase PRESIDENT SATA denotes bad omen. Dishonety. Oppresion. Deceiption. Unreliable. Unpredictable.Unpricincipled

    • LOL I have to admit you are right, for thats what actually comes to mind at the mention of his name thus far. You forgot to mention defamatory, discriminatory, threatening, offensive, abusive, likely to cause someone anxiety or distress, encourages violence or tribal hatred, in breach of confidence, conman, in breach of privacy, unlawful, harassing, libellous, abusive, harmful, vulgar, egoistic and objectionable. Gosh! the list goes on … and this is the legacy he will leave behind..

  6. Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) president. This is a good way of selling himself to the public. Councils are everywhere in this country. This is a good way of campaigning to take over from his father. People who are dull and they are these dull people that vote that they will be able to know who Sata small is and vote for him after telling them lies like his father did. He will start to go round the country in the name of working but the motivate will be to sell himself for possible position in this country. It is fine if he will work unlike his father.

  7. How many positions is he going hold? People wake up. It is not possible for him to deliver excellent sevice while holding all these positions. Do not just vote him in because of the name. Let him show us what he has done as Mayor before affording him another form of responsibility. Let Daniel continue while Mulenga concentrates on mayoral duties. Does he not understand the meaning of team work? Try being team player Mulenga. You are not exhibiting good leadership qualities by wanting everything you can lay your hands on. Why not work with Chisenga for a better PF? As for the councillors/cadres backing Mulenga, think service and not just personal gain. Share or rather split responsibilities. Do not kill PF for a few pennies. Telling Mulenga facts does not mean that you are not supportive.

  8. How does Mulenga go and sort out the councils before he has tackled a miniscule of the problems of City of Lusaka? Charity begins at home goes the saying! and PF a listening government? What a load of bullshit!! Is the economy not where it is today because of PF’s intransgence and arrogance, and roundly failing to listen to the people ????? This one is a son of his father, a joker of the highest order!!

  9. Why is the USA government not sending its ambassador to Zambia?my opinion is the environment in Zambia is volatile under the pf administration.

  10. Mulenga has his full rights to stand in whatever position he wants and win and serve in any number of position he wants. If he wins, it is not his fault…it just means the people want him. If the people don’t want him, why are they encouraging him to stand? Whether it is selfishness or not is not the question, if the voters decide then anybody can stand and win. Don’t blame the hunter, blame the bush.

    • @ one Tonga

Rubbish. How can thousands of people be bullied by one person? Will he be present with each and every LGAZ member when he or she casts the vote? If no candidate challenges Mulenga, then why not cast empty votes as protest? The fact is Mulenga is just exercising his right as a citizen. If the rest other people are cowards, is that his fault? Leave him alone. The problem in Zambia is that people always want to blame others for their cowardice. Why is everybody rushing to blame Mulenga but nobody is blaming Nevers Mumba and HH for their terrible dictatorial tendencies. In UPND nobody can challenge HH unless that person is Tonga, secondly the problem is that all the senior Tongas in UPND are cowards. So stop talking evil of Mulenga. You are not better people!

  11. Mulenga sata well done. Councils in Zambia are died, we need your leadership qualities to bring back professionalism in council. If u can manage to bring back the councils to normal then u are a great leader. Viva mulenga, we are behind u. We need change in councils through out the country.

  12. Mwembeshi, look at the bigger picture. Its not a blame game. It is sharing responsilities. Why should i care about HH and who ever? I care about PF delivering a good service. Try exhibiting some maturity.

    • Which hamble are going to hambleness or services? We all know he is arming himself for President.Zambia is not a Bisa Kingdom, but a country. We shall not anoint him simply because he is Sata”s son.By the way why talk of HH in this he ios Know part of Lgaz election and yu think all Tongas are UPND yu are so dull Lusaka soul.Only tribalists find faults in others who are ignorant of the a tribe in political coruption of sharing positions like PF has done.No wander yu are fearling yo on shadow.
