UNZA students last evening rioted over Sports and Youth Minister Chishimba Kambwili’s statement that he will deal with them if they dared him over the takeover of the Commonwealth Youth centre.
The students ran battles with riot police around 19:30 Hours forcing riot police to divert traffic from Arcades round about.
The students said they were angered by Mr Kambwili’s comments after he warned them that he will personally deal with them if they threatened protests.
“We want him to restrict his outbursts to Copperstone University and not bring the nonsense to UNZA. The Centre belongs to UNZA and he should get that in his head,” some students shouted.
Over 100 students managed to enter Great East Road and blocked traffic and stoning vehicles before police officers dispersed them.
The students vowed that they will continue to demonstrate until Mr Kambwili apologises or is removed from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“This Minster seems to have a problem with UNZA, he keeps threatening us as if we report to him. Let the Education Minister Dr Phiri handle this issue and not Kambwili. We will not stop pushing to take over the Centre because it is ours.”

@Sido Mark, although a referendum was agreed to for multipartyism, Kaunda just signed a constitutional amendment to usher in that era. @Dodoma, like @Sido Mark points out, a university student (and I have been one, so has he) is the signal that actually speaks for the silent majority. Regrettably public and private property is always destroyed, but that is the domain of mob psychology. The majority of the students do push their case civilly.

The forceful occupation of the Commonwealth Youth Center is illegal. The Honorable Minister is not obliged to apologize to students for stopping them from occupying the CYC by force. More accommodation is needed but forceful occupation illegal regardless of the good intentions.

There is a reality of being young: waiting to get all those good things in that the University is supposed to open up. Zambia is not offering this reality.
You participate in election as an enthusiastic youth full of life and energy as Hernán Cortés at the age of 18 in Mexico (1519 – 1521). However, in Zambia the reward for the youth after any political contribution is only booze but no job and no education: what is in for you as youth for wilding those pangas to slash, kill main or be the actual victim?
A university education in many ways should show to encompass an education in civility. Am afraid that behavior by the supposedly educated students will be pegging them way below the minister, the one they are trying to show how to do right.

I doubt that you have been to Varsity. Otherwise you would have known that student riots are a symptom of wider society apprehension. Those students come from communities representing the dejected and hapless Zambian society. You have a bunch of like-minded youngsters who feel hapless about their future propsects. Do you think they will concentrate on their studies? Rioting is their only way of getting the point across. This happened recently in Spain, Greece etc. Governements in those countries have hastened to address the students’ plight. But in Zambia, you have a Minister of education who is quiet about these issues and an overzealous fat fart telling them to shut up and issuing all sorts of threats. All this cuz we have an absentee landlord for a president.

This issue is very easy, really. UNZA is a learning institution of high excellence. It should have all the facilities it needs, especially those that are on its territory and already belonging to the university according to a certain Memorandum of Understanding I keep hearing about. Government, not UNZA, should take care of the youth of the nation. They can start by building infrastructure for the ordinary youth. They can kindly beg UNZA to use the facilities on an agreement, maybe even a fee, for a period until they get themselves sorted out. Kambwili was out of line and seems to have no idea where he is going with solving youth problems.

If Chishimba Kambwil had truly obtained a degree at some University, he should have learnt the art of research. All politicians worth their salt should have known that the current site where the Commonwealth Youth Centre is located was originally designated as a site where the School of Medicine should have been constructed.
Since GRZ did not have funds to build the Medical infrastructures at the Great East Rd Campus, a decision was made to relocate the School of Medicine at the then Lusaka Central Hospital – which was later re-named University Teaching Hospital. This has not worked well for Unza.
It is thus logical for a listening Govt to transfer the Commonwealth Youth Centre to Unza. Staff residences are Unza’s property. Unza Students are on the right track.

This behavior from the students is uncalled for and must be stopped. There is no way they should be tolerated for the indiscipline they exhibit. Breaking properties is crime, may someone please educate those students that they can protest peacefully and they will still be heard. It is high time we made these students pay for their crimes.
Only a person who has been to UNZA can understand that we are enjoying the freedoms that we enjoy partly as a result of the fracas that happens at UNZA. No matter how I can try to explain it those that have never stepped foot there will just see this as an irritation by UNZA students but far from it. Building the Commonwealth Center is encroaching on UNZA land. The next thing all the UNZA football stadiums will be gone in the name of shopping malls. I support UNZA students in every way especially if the MOU states the obvious. Just ask Chiluba and KK how UNZA made them capitulate at crucial moments. Why build more universities when you cannot even maintain one in Lusaka?
There maybe something wrong with destroying the property of ‘innocent’ by-passers, but there is nothing wrong in protesting in anger. Most of the bloggers condemning the students do not understand the historical narrative of how UNZA has been handled. There are underlying issues that have never been resolved because of successive governments ignorance of the role of higher education or sheer neglect. Kambwili’s attitude is a reflection of the political response to education that has dogged Zambia for many years. They look at school as a mere requirement to be glossed over – not as a link to a country’s fulfilment of all human developmental endeavours.
I remember Gen Godfrey Miyanda saying that when there is war,there will always be casualties.One day one student will be a casualty .
WHETHER WE LIKE HON KAMBWILI OR NOT, HE IS RIGHT ON THIS ONE. HE IS ALSO THE RIGHT MINISTER TO SPEAK ON THIS BECAUSE IT IS ABOUT A YOUTH CENTRE.
THE ONLY CHALLENGE HE HAS IS THAT HE HAS VERY POOR COMMUNICATION SKILLS. LET HIM CONSULT YOUNG VIBRANT POLITICIANS WHO ARE SHARP, HAVE GONE THROUGH UNZA LIKE MUHABI LUNGU TO ASSIST ON HOW TO HANDLE THIS MATTER.
Kambwilli is right and the MoU is wrong ? The building was built on UNZA land with the understanding it will be transferred to UNZA use after a period of time which as come, so how is that wrong ?
Having been a student leader in UNZASU before, i find it strange that students can be involved in matters of ownership of property by UNZA. We have a very competent administration running UNZA as well as the Ministry of Education to resolve such issues with the Ministry of Youth and Sport. My advice to our young men/women is concentrate on your studies.

The two ministers are both dull this should have been resolved by drawing another MOU between the two ministries and agree in principle to share presiding over the institution as both represent the interests of their ministries. As a youth committee I have been to the commonwealth many times. Much as it seems crazy of Kambwili to try and keep the students away from the facility which is meant for youths in Zambia, consider these facts:
1. The Commonwealth Youth Centre has about 30 single rooms
2. The place has about 4 classrooms
3. The remaining space is about 6 offices plus a full kitchen and dining hall complemented by a bar
Now, really what accommodation problem will this facility address at UNZA. I say students should push for more meaningful solutions like press government to build the equivalent of the Ruins as in at least 10 blocks of residences instead of pushing to occupy a place which wont sort out their problems .
I FIND UNZA STUDENTS ALWAYS WASTING THEIR ACADEMIC TIME MOSTLY ON MATTERS THAT ARE SO UN ACADEMIC. PLEASE, PUT YOUR ENERGY ON ACADEMIC STUFF AND NOT ON DEMOS, RIOTS. ALWAYS BEING IN CONFRONTATION DOES NOT PAY. OR IS IT A WAY OF DODGING TOUGH STUFF. KAMBWILI HAS A POINT. EVEN IF THE MoU SAID THE BUILDINGS WILL BE GIVEN TO UNZA, I AM SURE THERE’S A ROAD MAP TO THAT AND THAT ROAD MAP SHOULD BE FOLLOWED. I CHALLENGE THEM TO EMULATE THEIR FRIENDS AT CBU. NYDC DID ARE PROPOSAL TO COMMONWEALTH WHICH AS BEEN ACCEPTED THROUGH THE MINISTRY OF SPORT AND YOUTH. THIS HAPPENED SOME SEVEN MONTHS AGO BUT WHAT AS CHANGED TODAY FOR SOME UNZA STUDENTS TO WANT TO TAKE THE LAW IN THEY ON HANDS. WHY CAN’T THEY ENGE GOVERNMENT SO THAT THEIR KNOW THE TRUTH. THAT FACILITY IS FOR ALL YOUTHS IN ZAMBIA
