UNZA students last evening rioted over Sports and Youth Minister Chishimba Kambwili’s statement that he will deal with them if they dared him over the takeover of the Commonwealth Youth centre.

The students ran battles with riot police around 19:30 Hours forcing riot police to divert traffic from Arcades round about.

The students said they were angered by Mr Kambwili’s comments after he warned them that he will personally deal with them if they threatened protests.

“We want him to restrict his outbursts to Copperstone University and not bring the nonsense to UNZA. The Centre belongs to UNZA and he should get that in his head,” some students shouted.

Over 100 students managed to enter Great East Road and blocked traffic and stoning vehicles before police officers dispersed them.

The students vowed that they will continue to demonstrate until Mr Kambwili apologises or is removed from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“This Minster seems to have a problem with UNZA, he keeps threatening us as if we report to him. Let the Education Minister Dr Phiri handle this issue and not Kambwili. We will not stop pushing to take over the Centre because it is ours.”

    • Pa last Kambwili ch!ipuba fye. Ifya bushilu na ku baiche. Where is Sata so he can sort out this Kambwili thing. This big skeleton but small brain is going to far. PF show leadership in this issue. Where is the government to intervene? They are all just quiet. No wonder Kambwili throws his weight around because he knows no one can touch him. The president is no where to be seen. Dead government.

    • These students are so indiscipline.
Never seen students daring a honourable minister

Why aren’t the police arresting then?

      Thanks

    • IN AS MUCH I AGREE THE WARNING TO THE STUDENTS BY THE MINISTER WAS UNWARRANTED THAT’S NOT AN EXCUSE FOR THE STUDENTS TO DESTROY PEOPLE’S PROPERTY (CARS). THE CAR OWNERS MOST OF THE ARE ADVOCATING THAT MORE STUDENTS BE GIVEN BURSARY AND ON TOP OF THAT IT IS THE SAME PEOPLE WHOSE SALARIES ARE TAXED TO FINANCE BURSARY. GET ALIFE

    • IN AS MUCH AS I AGREE THE WARNING TO THE STUDENTS BY THE MINISTER WAS UNWARRANTED THAT’S NOT AN EXCUSE FOR THE STUDENTS TO DESTROY PEOPLE’S PROPERTY (CARS). THE CAR OWNERS MOST OF THEM ARE ADVOCATING THAT MORE STUDENTS BE GIVEN BURSARY AND ON TOP OF THAT IT IS THE SAME PEOPLE WHOSE SALARIES ARE TAXED TO FINANCE BURSARY. GET A LIFE.

    • MUSHOTA, YOU ARE RIGHT THESE STUDENT- THE ONLY THING THEY KNOW IS RIOTING. EVEN IF THEY GRADUATE AS ENGINEERS THEY ARE JUST USELESS AS THEY SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME RESOURCE RIOTING, IMPORTING, HEAVY DRINKING AND MANY MORE. THEY DON’T SPEND MUCH TIME ON BOOKS OR RESEARCH MATERIAL. WHEN ARE THE OTHER UNIVERSITIES UNDER CONSTRUCTION FINISHING? MAYBE WE CAN HAVE MORE SERIOUS STUDENTS IN THOSE NEW ONES.

    • I am not amazed listening to kambwili on public fora his reasoning is of a grade eleven drop out. No wonder PF is performing so badly it is saturated with zombies and extremely pompous but dull ministers. These guys were not ready to form government. They are a bunch of conmen and thieves.

    • Kambwili is a Fo.ol he thinks threats makes him a better Leader?? he can be Fat but that not make him indispensable. Moreover I also Question SATA to make such a Fat person Minister of Youth & Sports? Let him be kicked out just like Kabimba. He wrongly Handled this Matter.

    • Kambwili you sir are a double agent, I believe you are misplaced in saying those things about UNZA students. Where were you when we hosted Sata at UNZA dialogue when he had only 12 supporters including a a very tall and sickly looking bodyguard. I love PF and I love UNZA students movement (not necessarily UNZASU), UNZA students have always been there for Zambia I believe Hon Kambwili you are fighting a losing battle unless these students are not capable of standing the heat otherwise the UNZA monks I know, just a handful of them are enough to make minsiters lose their jobs. As for my fellow Pro PF people let’s be fair and analytical the studnets have ever right to the Commonwealth Youth Centre and Kambwili is being very undiplomatic in his dialogue with the students.

  1. Well, Kambwili should hanged. Are not Unza students youths. If it is at Unza then is should be used by Unza students. What does he want? Is it not used for right purpose this centre? He does not understand that Unza is hot place, and one need to tread sofly. Kumanenekele should be treated with respect even when there are differences.

    • These chaps thinks like they own Zambia. They always do a lot of nonsense instead of concentration on their studies.

    • Students the world over are very militant and this is not happening for the first time, though I am not in support of damaging other people’s property as this is unacceptable. But having been at UNZA before, I understand that rioting is the only way politicians will listen to students. Especially when you are dealing with dull but arrogant moro.ns and imbecilles like Chimbwi Kambwili.

  2. Stoning innocent people’s vehicles, no wonder some of you guys don’t deserve bursary. We are taxed heavily just to make sure that government pays for your education and in the end you must stone people’s cars. Fu.ck u

    • STUDENT LOANS WILL GET RID OF ALL THESE STUP!D BEHAVIOUR FROM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ZAMBIA. THE MORE YEARS SPENT AT UNIVERSITY BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN SPENDING WHOLE YOUR TIME STONING CARS AND THEREFORE FAILING MEANS INFLATED LOAN AMOUNTS. AND IF YOU PERSIST ON STONING CAR YOUR LOAN FACILITY MAY BE CANCELLED BY THE BANK AS YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO REPAY.

  3. Why two government ministries should be fighting over property just baffles me. It not only goes to show how chaotic the PF Government is but also reveals the level of dullness in its Cabinet. Not only that but it also proves how weak Sata is. Weak physically and mentally.

  4. kambwili!kambwili!kambwili! how many times have u been called? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! you are wrong, not four times its three. listen, when an old man is quarreling with a young person, the old man is said to be childish. ba kalamba, bombeni naba Dr phiri. students have brought pipo down before and u re not an exception. chill ba mudala, on how u deal with this issue. bazamisekani bazimayi.

  5. What sort of students are these? They cannot engage in debate but riot and destroy pple’s property. If they think the minister is not being reasonable, why not deal with him in a civilised manner?

  6. I have always said that this chimbwi is a keg full of crap. He is more than what one would term as a Lumpen proletariat, he is a thug, just like shakafuswa. Embarassing to have such dunderheads in government. And Mushota, just shut your trap!

  7. The solution for UNZA students to is ” Kill two or three every riot” They will stop. They don’t know who will die next so they will be afraid of dying and you save peoples property. It sounds bad but called collateral damage.

    • @Dodoma you are a fool. I am sure you have never seen the walls of a University. Do you think if you kill one UNZA student you can serve Lusaka. Find out from Kaunda and the Kalingalinga riots which resulted in a referendum and the end of UNIP and new era of chiluba and multipartism. My deal you want to ignite fire. This PF can be brought to its knees when people are angered.

    • @Sido Mark, although a referendum was agreed to for multipartyism, Kaunda just signed a constitutional amendment to usher in that era. @Dodoma, like @Sido Mark points out, a university student (and I have been one, so has he) is the signal that actually speaks for the silent majority. Regrettably public and private property is always destroyed, but that is the domain of mob psychology. The majority of the students do push their case civilly.

    • This is very immoral behaviour. Presumably you are an adult, older than 18, 19? Killing kids for rioting is not something society should indulge in as a control measure. I hope you were jesting or being drool.

    • Why not try to kill Kambwili first? I’m sure the faggot has a price on his head. His Roan people can bury him in one of the disused shafts

  8. UNZA is a terrorist organization. I can compare it to the ISIS, Bokoharam or alqaeda. This institute has made the life of motorist a living hell. How can intellectuals be so stupid that they attack innocent lives when they know where to find kambwili. I think the police must deal with these terrorists who even fail to use their knowlege to manufacture a needle seriousness. That’s why they are in the stone age!

    • ATI INTELLECTUALS??? THESE ARE BUT VILLAGE BUMPKINS WHO CAN’T DEBATE BECAUSE THEY CAN’T REASON. THERE ARE SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES WHICH STUDENTS FACE. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THEM RIOTING? THEY ARE TOO BUSY TO EVEN TO RIOT BECAUSE WHEN IT COMES TO FAILING- YOU JUST FAIL INDIVIDUALLY AND START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER £9000 PLUS TO COVER THE LOST YEAR. SO, STUDENTS HERE HAVE NO TIME TO RIOT. THAT’S WHY STUDENT LOANS MUST BE INTRODUCED IN ZAMBIA. ALL THESE RIOTING WILL STOP.

    • @peter don’t sound like you are so educated and you lived in a developed country before .UNZA students know that the only song that Government can listen to is going to streets. What can you reason with Kambwili. The UNZA student will never burn there university but take the war to docile society which is not speaking on there behalf as parents.so peter don’t be like some of us when you just a simple civil servant and PF cadre .

    • @Sido 100%. Pliz ignore @Peter..The writing is on the wall, literally. I doubt this person even passed o’level english. Winnow my man. Its like responding to @Mushota, catch my drift?

    • @other side, I think you should take that back. You have no clue about Al-qaeda and those terrorist organizations; ask us who have been where the steam is hottest, we will tell you. That said, are you PRACTICALLY convinced that the students will be allowed within a 100 meters of Kambwili??? Do your ethical math and give an honest answer. It is attitudes like yours that foment violence in otherwise peaceful communities. @Peter, they are intellectuals in training; unfortunately they have so many challenges and such an unfriendly environment that they know the only way to get authority to listen is to roil the waters as it were. This is what has happened over the years and government has never changed tact unfortunately. It is a bad habit that has been ingrained, sadly.

  9. That’s Zambian students for you… quick to hit the Great East Road and attack the very people who would support them against their issue…in this day of social media and electronic media these guys are unable to mobilise, lobby peacefully and effectively. It says a lot about the caliber of students we have today….how do you take to the streets and protest against a BUFFOON…you have just played straight into his hands you fool*sh kids…read more books and study more history about organising effective protests from student demonstrations of the 60s straight through the naughties.

  10. Does this chimbwi kambwili think that all youths problems will be resolved by grabbing that small building?

Why can’t we follow just what is on paper?. The building is supposed to be handed back to UNZA according to the MOU signed between UNZA management and common wealth youth organisation. But this arrogant monkey is making things worse. He has even silenced his counter party the minister of education.
Where is the president to save us from this nosense?. There is total breakdown of order in the country.

If he wants to take care of the youths interest in the whole nation, there are other better things this fool can do than just to cause chaos at the higher institute of learning. Does this monkey understand students?

  11. Is there any connection between private vehicles (property) and the statement that Kambwili uttered? If not why then should students stone and destroy property for innocent people? Students, learn to dialogue issues in a mature way so that even other people outside your circles can see sense. It is not always rightful to resort to violence to push for an agenda! We expect people of your caliber to register complaints or grievances in a more sober manner!
Two wrongs will never make a right. You are the light of the Nation that should be exemplary to other citizens.

    • Agreed, private motorists should not be made to suffer and students should learn to engage in proper dialogue!

Still, as much as the students were the ones throwing stones, what did “Hon” Kambwili expect would happen when he told the students to shut-up, roll over, and comply? Is that proper dialogue?

Honestly, it’s no surprise the UNZA students did this (….they always do!) and is something the minister of a “listening government” should have thought about before barking threats. In this case, Kambwili is as much to blame as the students.

  12. people supporting these stupid students are imbecile .how do you support these thugs destroying cars for innocent people .minister deal with these chaps .if it means closing unza just do that. take resources to serious universities not these fools. please GOVT do it the chiluba way close it for four years.

    • I concur with you. Much as am a product of UNZA, i dont condone the stupidity with which these thugs carryout their demos. Close the ****ing place indefinitelty

  13. Students are always ready to riot, they just need an excuse and thanks to dull Kambwili he just provided them with one. Before he wakes up from his stupor issues will soon change from Commonwealth to bursaries, allowances, etc.

    • That was perhaps the toughest senior cop that walked the streets of Lusaka; Mr Fear Factor himself adorned in full riot gear, he was a menace. Wazakaza was so scaring that just by looking at and shouting one or two things at the students; they would scamper!!

  14. Good for nothing students…. is that the way future leaders behave? future leaders with a violent unrealistic and immature nature?? Are you students or kaponya’s? i need answers please from UNZA students

    • The propensity for intelligent souls to protest at the slightest provocation is very high…You may not be able to understand this, but it is true. That is the reason most Universities world wide experience student demonstrations.

  15. Can we get back to the very first UNZA Riot when a certain Captain Kafumukache fresh from the Royal Military College at Sandhurst occupied the Great East Road Campus? No fracas ensured, no fires but a happy ending due to a brilliant commander on the ground.
Any one remembers UNZA protests at the French Embassy the alienated KK from UNZA and all intellectuals?
The level of discontentment in Zambia is grossed over as surmountable with pangas, brute force or naked intimidation. Well and good for now. Address the underlying frustration of the youth. Watch your Population Pyramid; you have a time bomb!
The chaos in Syria, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya started with very simple youth related miscalculations from those in power.

  16. It shows that these students went to UNZA using back door method, the MASUMBA way, that is, using leakages. Thats why they behave that way, no reasoning, except illicit drinking, sex and violence. You cant find such students here in ENGLAND, let alone go primitive way.

  17. This fat fart must shut up and sit down. Embarassing to have this embecile as a minister of anything. but then the appointing authority is an absentee landlord. Birds of the same feather..Nuf said

  18. y shud pipo continue to fear unza students ?we a heavily taxed bcos of these so called untouched and riotius students.pipo have got rights to speak against wat is not gud abt thse students including h.kambwili whom do they think they are, they av spent many years bcos of ubucopo and we a paying for their basaries on top of that they a wasting pipos property!shallow mindeded students.

  19. I don’t just understand our so called intellectuals why don’t you deal with national issues peacefully like our fathers use to(martin luther king jr,marcus garvey Malcolm x etc)riot, riot, riot that’s all you know let me not sound too bicthy I feel you are on the wrong place( couse its a place of intellectual not thugs) at the wrong time couse of jubilee) in the wrong country(couse violence has no place grow up and start behaving like future leaders that you always kambalizi all the time

  20. @bigben:
You have an insight that most of us seem not to have. If you have a frustrated society; the best of their times are when everyone and everywhere are watching: BBC, Eljezira, CNN social media. What can be better than the Silver Jubilee of a Republic whose President collapsed in New York?

    • that’s a trick one you have put two eggs on my both hands the one you got some weeks ago and the other one yesterday which one should i drop first? i guess your interest is on the weeks egg……sory am PF

  21. are there no guideline to the use of the same building? can some one post the same MoU so that we see what it says instead of speculating. students are under a lot of pressure but I advise them to try and sort out such issues through the University authorities. “I chakutintana , chilaputuka”

  22. If the students are seriously aggrieved. Why not march to State House?

All well, That is why I have so much respect for Doctors. They dont have no time to lose. They never riot like savages. They just want to talk.

Much as I do not support the Minister’s outbursts, I think damaging other people’s properties is too backward.

Are these the ministers we are going to have in the years to come. Always wanting attention. Always grumbling.

    • Who will receive them at state house? Because we are told that state house has been deserted. Smhm.

  23. @Peter, comment 1.6, you seem to have beef with Engineers….are engineering students the only students who riot or demonstrate etc….? how does beer drinking come into this…? are Engineers the only proffessionals who drink… or its sour grapes, you tried to be one and you didnt make it. what are the real issues you have against engineers in this Nation. may be we can help you out?

  24. & there I was trying these childish students to say “reposess the centre and let UNZA use it to raise fund.” ALAS!! The poorly educated swines through stones at my new second hand trailblazer!!! What wrong did I do? Just trying to go to Chongwe was my fault? All rioting students fee-pool-lee fyenu!! How do you make me turn back to go round through Kamloops!! Fyatile fyabamoma benu!!

  25. The worst University at it again! doing what they do best when they can’t cope with school work! destroy hard earned property!! University ni weka! No leakages that took there in the first place!

  26. The forceful occupation of the Commonwealth Youth Center is illegal. The Honorable Minister is not obliged to apologize to students for stopping them from occupying the CYC by force. More accommodation is needed but forceful occupation illegal regardless of the good intentions.

    • @ Dr Makasa,

Maybe explain to us in terms of which rule or law is the accupation illegal? The need for accomodation is immediate and the students have sung this song for a while. They have an under utilised building on the property. What appealing options do these poor students have?

  27. But why stone innocent motorists? This is stup!d!ty of the highest order. We were once students, when UNZA was habitable. Know where to take your madness, these are tax payers whose money you are using,ba chimbwi

  28. with all due respect i strongly feel the minister should look around himself sir those days of two men protesting at the state house are over you are a minister now with people to delegate times have changed you cant be every where and always on top of even petty issue like football referees just for eg where are your juniors we respect you and always spare drama of been laughter at my our friends abroad who cant tell the difference of those in parliament and the streets

  29. @nato
    @sister
There is a reality of being young: waiting to get all those good things in that the University is supposed to open up. Zambia is not offering this reality.
You participate in election as an enthusiastic youth full of life and energy as Hernán Cortés at the age of 18 in Mexico (1519 – 1521). However, in Zambia the reward for the youth after any political contribution is only booze but no job and no education: what is in for you as youth for wilding those pangas to slash, kill main or be the actual victim?

  30. A university education in many ways should show to encompass an education in civility. Am afraid that behavior by the supposedly educated students will be pegging them way below the minister, the one they are trying to show how to do right.
Get civilized and know how to protest without harming innocent citizens.

  31. @bigben
I doubt that you have been to Varsity. Otherwise you would have known that student riots are a symptom of wider society apprehension. Those students come from communities representing the dejected and hapless Zambian society. You have a bunch of like-minded youngsters who feel hapless about their future propsects. Do you think they will concentrate on their studies? Rioting is their only way of getting the point across. This happened recently in Spain, Greece etc. Governements in those countries have hastened to address the students’ plight. But in Zambia, you have a Minister of education who is quiet about these issues and an overzealous fat fart telling them to shut up and issuing all sorts of threats. All this cuz we have an absentee landlord for a president.

    • Well put right there. Cant be better than that. Students the world over a very militant and this is not happening for the first time, though I am not in support of damaging other people’s property. But having been at UNZA before, I understand that rioting is the only way politicians will listen to students.

    • @cjay
      @ mm le grand
Have never been to varsity i still don,t believe that rioting is the only way never compare Zambia to those developed countries, imagin what would happen if thing develops to worse do we really have the resources to build the country when when our town looks like a street in LA are we suppose to support people dancing on the boat course the world is doing so even if they don’t have lifejackets? lets be real there many ways of killing a rat and stick to the coffee leave the president alone

  32. Though I do not support the out bursts of Kambwili , in the same vein I do not support the stoning of vehicles of innocent people. Imagine you have just bought a car through a loan to have it stone by UNZA students…. why cant the students go to Kambwili’s Ministry and demonstrate there ? Its utter stuppiddiy of the students. Just go and manhandle kambwili not destroying private property you dull students.

  33. I am particulary disappointed with the so called “UNZA STUDENTs”. They may have a genuine reason to protest, but stonning people’s vehicles is totally unacceptable. These student should realise that we are taxed heavly by Gorvenment, which money goes to there wellbeing at capus. if they have issues with kambwili, they know where he is found. why not deal with him? Their beahvoiur is totally foolish. Pliz Students spare the innocent motorists………

  34. Their response was apt, except for the stoning of private cars which is bad public relations for their cause. Students should try to win the hearts of the people.

It was to be expected in the circumstances. Mr Kambwili needs to change his tone. He is a big fat bully. In the children’s series The Fat Controller is a stern man but is fair. Kambwili’s Fat Controllers personality is anything but.

Please PF, politely remove this man. He is also showing the traits of antagonising citizens and heard of hearing in a manner no different to Wynter. Wynter Kabimba was annoying in some of his responses, but was clearly a complex leadership personality.

Kambwili is not leadership material. Period. You can’t make a purse out of a pigs ear, as the old saying goes.

  35. This issue is very easy, really. UNZA is a learning institution of high excellence. It should have all the facilities it needs, especially those that are on its territory and already belonging to the university according to a certain Memorandum of Understanding I keep hearing about. Government, not UNZA, should take care of the youth of the nation. They can start by building infrastructure for the ordinary youth. They can kindly beg UNZA to use the facilities on an agreement, maybe even a fee, for a period until they get themselves sorted out. Kambwili was out of line and seems to have no idea where he is going with solving youth problems.

  36. @mangwanu
    @cjay
    @mmLe grand
Zambia has no societal ethos to guide our today’s youth. They are in a vacuum.
Go back to 1970 during the days the British youth when they occupied May Fair buildings in Hyde Park: all of them children from the British super rich. They all posed as hippies for reasons best known to them. Then the days of Acid Rain in USA of University students from the Ivy League Universities; all kappa, alpha etc.
There was no tear gas; no fracas; all ended well because the leaders understood the generation protest of the Viet Nam War Era, not because of it but because of an underlying generation change for something new to happen; these were the new majority voters: The baby boomers.
When a society is not based on a scientific approach, you cannot avoid what is going…

  37. When a society is not based on a scientific approach, you cannot avoid what is going today in Zambia, a country where Think Tanks are unknown.
You must listen to the youth of today because one of them will be our President tomorrow.

  38. KAMBWILI IS WRONG HERE AND IS THE ROOT CAUSE THE RIOT. He should have consulted the Minister of Education and not to wage war against the students. The truth is all colleges and Universities in the country need hostels hence the need to use the Commonwealth building to increase bed spaces. Kambili`schild or grand daughter will one day sleep in the corridors of UNZA. WILL HE LIKE SUCH A THING?

  39. KAMBWILI is becoming another Kabimba Wynter. Let the students use the building so they can study and serve the nation among them are doctors. We need Doctors and not games at the moment. so Kambwili set your priorities right.

  40. But again, how could a high learning institution keep rioting in order to air their grievances? This simply means there are danderheads compared to Chibolya guys who went to UNZA after leakage. The more you learn, the more matured and professional you become in sorting out differences but with UNZA foolish students it the opposite. Freedom is good but if too much it also brings alot of problems like these. Too much of anything is but. Ine bonse ba UNZA nga nalimipanta pa misula nga mwalintobela motoka. Your behaviour tells us that you can’t become leaders because you are full of crap m******mwe.

  41. If Chishimba Kambwil had truly obtained a degree at some University, he should have learnt the art of research. All politicians worth their salt should have known that the current site where the Commonwealth Youth Centre is located was originally designated as a site where the School of Medicine should have been constructed.

Since GRZ did not have funds to build the Medical infrastructures at the Great East Rd Campus, a decision was made to relocate the School of Medicine at the then Lusaka Central Hospital – which was later re-named University Teaching Hospital. This has not worked well for Unza.

It is thus logical for a listening Govt to transfer the Commonwealth Youth Centre to Unza. Staff residences are Unza’s property. Unza Students are on the right track.

  42. @Kalok, I still mantain; UNZA habours Bokoharam terrorists! They use the same tactics. Terrorist attack the innocent and defenseless to attract attention. Isn’t that what these UNZa terrorists do? Do u have any idea how it feels if its yo car that has been stoned? And the way u sound I wouldn’t be surprised if u also participated in these terrorist attacks

    • Good. You are entitled to your opinions and your conclusions. You will of course be surprised to learn that I left Zambia several years ago. I am well versed in the tactics of terrorist organizations and groups and unless you are doing a similar job I doubt your thoughts hold much authority. Have a great day.

  43. Kambwili needs to concentrate on Zambian football. Why do they lose ALL the time. Is his anger misplaced or a cover for the failure to give Sport good leadership? They keep losing, every weekend is bad news day!

    Football Hooligan

  44. Cage the foolish students they should not dare leadership using evil means we 5pay tax so that they are educated .Unza does not belong to students but to the state. We are behind you hon Kambwili. KK delt with us on those days and there was order at campus.l

  45. This behavior from the students is uncalled for and must be stopped. There is no way they should be tolerated for the indiscipline they exhibit. Breaking properties is crime, may someone please educate those students that they can protest peacefully and they will still be heard. It is high time we made these students pay for their crimes.

  46. Only a person who has been to UNZA can understand that we are enjoying the freedoms that we enjoy partly as a result of the fracas that happens at UNZA. No matter how I can try to explain it those that have never stepped foot there will just see this as an irritation by UNZA students but far from it. Building the Commonwealth Center is encroaching on UNZA land. The next thing all the UNZA football stadiums will be gone in the name of shopping malls. I support UNZA students in every way especially if the MOU states the obvious. Just ask Chiluba and KK how UNZA made them capitulate at crucial moments. Why build more universities when you cannot even maintain one in Lusaka?

  47. There maybe something wrong with destroying the property of ‘innocent’ by-passers, but there is nothing wrong in protesting in anger. Most of the bloggers condemning the students do not understand the historical narrative of how UNZA has been handled. There are underlying issues that have never been resolved because of successive governments ignorance of the role of higher education or sheer neglect. Kambwili’s attitude is a reflection of the political response to education that has dogged Zambia for many years. They look at school as a mere requirement to be glossed over – not as a link to a country’s fulfilment of all human developmental endeavours.

  48. I remember Gen Godfrey Miyanda saying that when there is war, there will always be casualties. One day one student will be a casualty .

  49. WHETHER WE LIKE HON KAMBWILI OR NOT, HE IS RIGHT ON THIS ONE. HE IS ALSO THE RIGHT MINISTER TO SPEAK ON THIS BECAUSE IT IS ABOUT A YOUTH CENTRE.

THE ONLY CHALLENGE HE HAS IS THAT HE HAS VERY POOR COMMUNICATION SKILLS. LET HIM CONSULT YOUNG VIBRANT POLITICIANS WHO ARE SHARP, HAVE GONE THROUGH UNZA LIKE MUHABI LUNGU TO ASSIST ON HOW TO HANDLE THIS MATTER.

    • Kambwilli is right and the MoU is wrong ? The building was built on UNZA land with the understanding it will be transferred to UNZA use after a period of time which as come, so how is that wrong ?

  50. Having been a student leader in UNZASU before, i find it strange that students can be involved in matters of ownership of property by UNZA. We have a very competent administration running UNZA as well as the Ministry of Education to resolve such issues with the Ministry of Youth and Sport. My advice to our young men/women is concentrate on your studies.

  51. The two ministers are both dull this should have been resolved by drawing another MOU between the two ministries and agree in principle to share presiding over the institution as both represent the interests of their ministries. Kambwili must stop being petty and act like responsibly for interest of the electorate that he serves. engaging students in public media sivintu…

  52. As a youth committee I have been to the commonwealth many times. Much as it seems crazy of Kambwili to try and keep the students away from the facility which is meant for youths in Zambia, consider these facts:
    1. The Commonwealth Youth Centre has about 30 single rooms
    2. The place has about 4 classrooms
    3. The remaining space is about 6 offices plus a full kitchen and dining hall complemented by a bar
Now, really what accommodation problem will this facility address at UNZA. I say students should push for more meaningful solutions like press government to build the equivalent of the Ruins as in at least 10 blocks of residences instead of pushing to occupy a place which wont sort out their problems .

  53. I FIND UNZA STUDENTS ALWAYS WASTING THEIR ACADEMIC TIME MOSTLY ON MATTERS THAT ARE SO UN ACADEMIC. PLEASE, PUT YOUR ENERGY ON ACADEMIC STUFF AND NOT ON DEMOS, RIOTS. ALWAYS BEING IN CONFRONTATION DOES NOT PAY. OR IS IT A WAY OF DODGING TOUGH STUFF. KAMBWILI HAS A POINT. EVEN IF THE MoU SAID THE BUILDINGS WILL BE GIVEN TO UNZA, I AM SURE THERE’S A ROAD MAP TO THAT AND THAT ROAD MAP SHOULD BE FOLLOWED. I CHALLENGE THEM TO EMULATE THEIR FRIENDS AT CBU. NYDC DID ARE PROPOSAL TO COMMONWEALTH WHICH AS BEEN ACCEPTED THROUGH THE MINISTRY OF SPORT AND YOUTH. THIS HAPPENED SOME SEVEN MONTHS AGO BUT WHAT AS CHANGED TODAY FOR SOME UNZA STUDENTS TO WANT TO TAKE THE LAW IN THEY ON HANDS. WHY CAN’T THEY ENGE GOVERNMENT SO THAT THEIR KNOW THE TRUTH. THAT FACILITY IS FOR ALL YOUTHS IN ZAMBIA
