Sports Permanent Secretary Bob Samakai has asked Faz to speed up the
process of hiring an expatriate coach for the Zambia national team.
Samakai said Faz had been given the green light to find a permanent
replacement as soon as possible.
“We hope they Faz can find a suitable candidate soon because we need
to get things moving,” Samakai said at Holiday Inn where he had gone
to attend boxer Esther Phiri’s weigh-in today.
Samakai also confirmed that ex-Congo-Brazzaville coach Noel Tosi who
is now reported to be the front-runner for the Zambia job currently
being held by Patrick Phiri was one of the candidates Faz was talking
to.
“He (Tosi) is now free of his contract and is one of the coaches Faz
is looking at,” Samakai added.
Tosi became available after the Congo Football Federation fired him
after drawing 0-0 with Zambia on March 25 at home in their 2008 Africa
Cup Group 11 qualifier.
The shortlist over the last 24 months since Kalusha Bwalya resigned as
coach includes Englishmen Colwyn Rowe and James Duffy, Brazilian Edson
Silva, former Hungary coach Bertalan Bicksei including Stephen Keshi
who has since returned to train Togo.
2nd placed Zambia on 8 points in Group 11 has had a stuttering Africa
Cup qualifying campaign and must beat leaders South Africa on 11 on
September 8 in Cape Town by 2-0 to pip the latter to a place at next
years Ghana finals.
BOXING:
WIBF Intercontinental Super Featherweight champion Esther Phiri takes
to the ring tomorrow evening at Woodlands stadium to fight Rodostina
Valcheva of Bulgaria for the vacant GBU crown.
Both fighters weighed-in at 59 Kg’s at Fridays official weigh-in at
The Holiday Inn in Lusaka ahead of Saturdays fight in the second
weight-check after Phiri and Valcheva were overweight in their initial
scale check on 59.5 and 60.1 Kg’s respectively.
Five non-title supporting bouts will take place during the course of
the afternoon in the build-up to the big fight that is scheduled to
begin at 19:30 Zambian time.
Valcheva is a late replacement to compatriot Galina Ivanova who pulled
out of the title fight due to an injury sustained in training in Sofia
while preparing for this weekends fight.
I don’t understand why does FAZ have Tosi as a front runner or even talking to him for that matter. What has he done really. I doubt he is better than Patrick Phiri. If your are going for a foreign coach, he really be better than the local coaches. I really don’t see the point here.
I know it takes coaches and good players to win games, but I must say Tosi wont help Zambia. I would have held back if they had gone for the Botswana coach. He has helped improve Bostwana national team despite the fact that they have below average players and I bet he would do better with Zambia since we have high quality players.
Anyway that is FAZ. Good at wasting money and then holding useless inquiries and firing foreign coach ..same old cycle. Maybe we really need a change in FAZ leadership. I wonder what is Great Kalu’s role in all this. Isn’t he supposed to be the smart one on that executive? We are just not seeing his impact. Case of great player not equal to great administrator/coach?
Zambians…Zambians al ye of little faith what shall i do to you! Here is a classical case of the utter shallowness of the zambian psyche, which is that all things foreign are superior! Why cant we develop local talent, with the money you are paying the foreign coach you can probably train 20 others. Our country is poor lets face it! if we cannot afford foreign coaches why employ them….
Lets go for Rowe, the Botswana coach, though even this Tosi seems to be good he managed to hold Bafana Bafana to a goalless draw in the first game in RSA, beat Chad 3:1 and drew with us 0:0 and this is not a bad record considering Congo Brazz standard. Keshi has failed at Togo. I dont know anything about these others.
FAZ can`t even pay the U20 players for their allowances how will they manage to pay a foreign coach. Charity begins @ home.If they want a good coach, they(FAZ) should go for a French or Brazilian.
# 2 If you really ka castro just shut up, your kafupi father made zambia what it is today – poorer than we were 20 years ago.
I guess there are several top notch coaches that we can go for. What is this Tosi bringing? I would understand if FAZ were impressed with his record of say beating Zambia, sout Africa etc, but none whatsoever, even Phiri is better than him. We need coaches that can transform the talent of our players into results.

Your wikipedia profile of Tosi is not sufficient to coach Zed. He lacks proficiency in his CV and he is just another Burkard Ziese or Juan Brouwer (Men of no substance).
We need a coach who can stand the test of time. Not wannabe coaches like Tosi.
I do understand that we need a top class coach. And looking around at Zambian coaches there is noone currently so we need an expatriate coach. But Tosi? Why Tosi when he is a failure in Congo? Is he being chosen just because of his skin colour? There are more visible expatriate coaches on the scene. Tosi is worse than Kalusha
