Government  has mourned the death of Lusaka Province police commanding officer Wasakaza Ng’uni and issued strict instructions to the police command to “leave no stones unturned†in the investigations into the cause of his death in a tragic road accident on Tuesday night in Lusaka.
Speaking to journalists at the late Mr Nguni’s funeral house in Kabulonga’s Twin Palm Road, Vice-President Rupiah Banda said police should thoroughly investigate the accident to find out exactly what led to the death of the popular and tough top cop.
Mr Nguni 57, died around 20:00 hours on Tuesday in Lusaka’s Kabangwe area on the Great North Road when his Toyota Mark II overturned as returned from his farm in Ngwerere where he had gone to collect a cell phone he had earlier forgotten there.
“This is a great loss to the nation and I speak for many Zambians.
It is important to investigate deeper, the cause of the accident in order to establish exactly what happened.
It will be sad for the President to arrive to such devastating news,†Vice-President Banda said.
“We used to sleep peacefully knowing that Mr Nguni was in-charge,†a visibly shaken Vice-President said.
He described the death of Mr Nguni as upsetting, sad and that the nation was faced with an early death of a selfless and gallant police officer.
The late police commander was a dedicated worker and a great role model to the younger and aspiring police officers.
“On behalf of Government we would like to send our condolences to the family and to the (Zambia) Police Service,†he said.
And Inspector General Ephraim Mateyo said although preliminary findings indicated it was a normal accident, the police command did not completely rule out foul play.
Mr Mateyo, who broke down in between his speech when he spoke to journalists at the funeral house, said the death of Mr Nguni had taken him several miles backwards in police operations.
He described the late Mr Nguni as a gallant officer with whom he had made a great team because they shared a common vision.
“Immediately the police high command was informed of the accident, we sent officers from the Scenes of Crime Section to go to the accident scene and right now we are still examining the vehicle.
As at now it’s too early to speculate,â€he said before breaking down.
Police would try to ensure that the peace that the nation was enjoying under Mr Ng’uni continued.
Other notables who visited the funeral house were: Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Kalombo Mwansa, deputy minister of Home Affairs, Grace Njapau and permanent secretary Peter Mumba.
Others were permanent secretary in the Ministry of Works and Supply Bizwayo Nkunika and his counterpart from Lusaka Province Susan Sikaneta and the entire police high command.
Meanwhile, former president Kenneth Kaunda who broke down after being informed of Mr Nguni’s death said the passing of the man was a great loss to the family and the entire nation.
“It’s sad… condolences to the family and the police service. It’s a great loss,â€Dr Kaunda said amid tears.

in each case all of them are illegal.

MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services, Mike Mulongoti has urged contributors to foreign publications to refrain from writing falsehoods about Zambia just to make money. Mr Mulongoti was reacting to two articles in the Germany media, one by a named Zambian doctor saying operating theatres had leaking roofs and that flies flew around during surgery, and another by a Germany celebrity who alleged that Zambians were so overwhelmed by the AIDS pandemic that people were unable to think about the next day.“It is not right for anyone to print falsehoods about Zambia.They are damaging our reputation all because they want to be given money. Such people are unpatriotic and their behaviour is bad,†he said. Muvi TV managing director Steve Nyirenda made the articles available to the parliamentary committee on information and broadcasting last Friday. Mr Nyirenda told the committee that such negative reports were damaging the country’s bid to attract foreign investors and tourists. The German celebrity said there was “too much HIV/AIDS in Zambia for people to even think about the next day.†Mr Mulongoti, who is also chief government spokesperson, said false reports about any country were unpatriotic and bordered on the morality and integrity of the authors. He said Zambia had achieved a lot in the health sector for anyone to begin making such falsehoods, which were “selfish†and aimed at painting a bad picture of the country. People were free to contribute to foreign publications but that they must ensure they gathered their facts instead of writing damaging reports based on falsehoods. He said there was no country in the world that had been spared by HIV/AIDS but the context in which the Germany report was put was aimed at lowering the integrity of the Zambian people. He said the fact that there were no restrictions as to what foreign correspondents could publish did not mean they should base their reports on falsehoods. He said even if a story were negative it would still be respected if it represented the real picture on the ground.

The majority of UNZA students are finangwa. They give their future to any Chibuku buyer. Ng’uni was selfless in his serving the country. Those that know a bit of history, he was tough right in Chambeshi. It was not until Nguni left Chambeshi before people could freely steal Cobalt from the mines. I remember him for his bravity when he challeged a gunman at ZNBC in Kitwe. The gunman had taken control of the entrance and when Ng’uni got the news went directly to him and asked him to surrender the gun immediately. When the gunman threatened to shoot, Nguni told him to go ahead as there were more police officers surrounding the place. The gunman ended up dropping the gun.
Such is the officer, the nation has lost… KK knows better.

For all his faults Nguni was indeed a gallant Police Officer(MHSRIP), he probably should have been given the responsibility to wipe out crime in Lusaka and other cities. This is where he would have added real value, rather than chasing after UNZA students (who often have real grievances)… Speaking of UNZA, someone needs to take a bold step and close down these institutions for a total revamp, before allowing any students to attend.

The Zambia Police service has lost a gallant officer and will remembered for among many things, the Unza student brutalities of 2000.
Iam also compelled to #12 for calling unza students finangwa. Whilst i sympathise with him that he wasn’t selected to either go to cbu or unza, he should be modest in his description of our graduates. Iam rulling out the possibility of his going to cbu becoz no cbu graduate will ever look down upon a fellow grad from unza.
If indeed this guy has a degree, then certainly its one from abroad where a person with 45 points can also get it.
Here in Ireland, i have met a lot of Zambians who could not make it to either unza or cbu but have successfully enrolled for graduate studies.
It is for this logical reasosn that i would strongly advise #12 to take his frustrations elsewhere and leave these graduates to fight and defend what they feel is right for the country.

I am deeply sadned at the tragic and untimely death of Wazakaza Nguni. He was the epitome of what a policeman should be. His demise comes at a time when sanity was almost being restored to a city like Lusaka.
I remember Wasakaza a long time ago in Kitwe as a nonosense policeman. I come across again many years later in Lusaka around five in the morning when he was doing a roadrun on the road from Lilayi police training college.
Condolences to his family, the police and the many ordinary Zambians whose lives he made a bit safer from criminalty.

There is nothing special about being a student at UNZA.There is no immunity from the law when you break it. I was a student at UNZA and can attest to the fact that the complexion of the student populace is as varied in character as that found in a nation. There are thieves, prostitutes,religious fanatics,*****s,criminals,fools, ruffians, wise men,good students,law abiding students,lumpens, charlatans, schemers, louts and good citizens.The only common factor is that these are students at UNZA.
When there is a riot it is mostly the scum of the students and brutal element in the forefront. They stone and damage vehicles,propert and lives belonging to ordinary Zambians who totally have nothing to do with their grievances.
The rough treatment Wazakazi once gave them made them think twice before going on rampage on petty Issues.
In any case Wasakaza was protecting the tax payers whose money enables these students be at UNZA.

#2 good points. MHSRIP, Nguni was a tough cop, we all agree on that. But Cops have a tendancy to think they are the law as a result they drink and drive, they dont wear sit belts and probably he was drunk. Another thing he was driving a mark II. That car is proberbly 15 years old. If he was commanding officer why wasnt he driving an official police car? And guys the car overtuned that means he was going at more than the speed limit. There is no way a car will over turn if you are going at 80KM/H. In as much as we simpathise with the family some of these deaths are very much avoidable.

I remember him vividly when I was growing up as a small boy in Kitwe. He was a dedicated and vicious policeman with precise military vigilance.
He was able to quel any riot.
Then I grow up went to UNZA and was elected to UNZASU executive committee and I had a vicious encounter with him during one of the VIVAs that happened.

Whenever a public officer like Nguni dies, just remember that with him goes all that knowledge and experience that is not obtainable overnight. He might have annoyed the students but his responsibility was to all the residents of lusaka, not just those few at GE Rd, whom he served well I passed through UNZA and served in UNZASU and during my tenure, there was no riot at UNZA. I do not believe that having genuine grievances gives students the right to destroy innocent peoples property; the very people whose taxes keep UNZA running. There are today senoir senior policemen who have passed through UNZA. Virtually every provincial police chief is a graduate. I bet you that if they are given responsibility to quell a student riot that overuns GE road, they will have only the lives and property of innocent motorists to think about.

The University of Zambia, Great East Road Campus, is my almar mater and I am not ashamed. But I abhor students’ ritous behaviour. Whenever there is a students’ “viva”, usually instigated by a few “lumpens” and “monks”, the Police in most cases use the riot Act to disperse the unruly students. The Act is read to them to disperse, failing which Police Officers are ordered to charge. The students in most cases refuse to disperse on the erroneous belief that that is the only way the authorities would listen to them. When the officers charged students run back to the Hostels where innocent students remain. Of course the tear gas is indiscriminate, as it also affects innocent students. We had Lusaka Commanding Officers such as Rice Kumanda and later Barthromew Jere. These Commanding officers, just like Wazakaza acted within the law by ordering their officers to charge if the Riot Act is not heeded and thus protecting properties and lives. Waza was an active and disciplined Cop.
Unza will stand despite the dilapidation levels. By the year 2000, it had good computer fascilites and internet was free to all university students. Monks used to drink chibuku because it was affordable to buy, but when they got paid they all drunk catsle and mosi and really dressed well that all kabulonga girls used to go down.
