Residents of Mandevu Constituency have embarked on a clean-up exercise to unblock drainages to prevent outbreak of common diseases.
Mandevu constituency Member of Parliament Jean Kapata disclosed this when she kicked-off the exercise in Chazanga township today.
Ms Kapata who is also Tourism Minister said the clearing of the drainages is meant to prevent the outbreak of diarrheal diseases like cholera as a result of blocked drainages and also to maintain a clean environment in the area.
She said the cleaning of drainages will be an on-going programme which will be conducted every Saturday by the residents themselves.
“This programme will be done by the residents as they will be mobilizing themselves every Saturday and start clearing the drainages”, said Kapata.
Ms Kapata stated that the programme which has started with Chazanga compound will be extended to other parts of the constituency.
“We have made arrangements with the council to be moving around picking the garbage that has been removed from the drainages after they have been cleaned by the residents,” she said.
Ms Kapata further said garbage bins will be positioned in strategic points so
that people can throw it in designated places other than throwing in the drainages which in-turn blocks the passages and stops water from flowing well.
And Mpulungu Ward 23 Councillor in Mandevu Constituency Christopher Shakafuswa said there has been an overwhelming response from the residents who turned up in large numbers to start clearing the drainages.
Mr. Shakafuswa said the programme of cleaning the drainages will continue to ensure that all the unblocked lines are cleared.
Good job. It’s their community so they need to clean it up. This should also extend to other constituencies as well, too much shiki polomya.
UGLY WOMAN SHE WHO WAS A HE
There is nowhere to throw rubbish in Lusaka. There are no working dump sites or recycling centers. The MP is doing the wrong job here. What then is the job of the council? Residents are cleaning the drains, fine which is the job of the council, right. Now will they be tong if thy allocate themselves plots. They are being empowered to do council work which includes allocation of plots. Let’s be careful what we allow citizens to do. I agree totally that we need to educate people about the importance of not throwing litter anyhow and to formulate laws that will punish offenders. This is the job of the MP, not litter picking.
Nice move and that’s how every MP should try to do to move the country.
If the law makers should be doing executive work, then you should get rid of local governments, district commissions, and more importantly, provincial ministers. provincial ministers? What do these animals do, any way?
Rubbish meanwhile the councilors and MPs elected to make Zambia better and cleaner are doing what exactly. Getting fat on citizen’s tax with nothing to show it
How dull are u? Jean Kapata is MP for Mandevu. Can u not read? Foolish!
In fact the only thing citizen should be educated or implored to do is stop throwing rubbish any how. The rest the council should do. And Zambian are cheering this nonsense on. That is why this country is going nowhere people can’t or have stopped thinking
Joy you are right. There should be a drive to educate people not to throw rubbish. It is so infuriating to see someone throwing rubbish. I don’t know who they expect to pick it up. It should also be the parents responsibility to ensure that their offspring do not litter.
This is positive action in a country with limited funds to provide all services.
Positive citizen action. Let’s help the gov’t along.
Very good. Keep this up, don’t stop.
I’ve always said we’re government and it’s our duty to maintain our surrounding. Edgar won’t do that for you.
Then Edgar should f**k off……Don’t you know he is our employee….employed to use our money to do these things. Shallow thinking dunderhead!!
Fantastic news! Just made my day. Now replicate this to the whole city and country. At the moment the whole of Lusaka looks like a dumping site.
JEAB KAPATA OF ALL THE MPS IN ZAMBIA MUST THE MOST HARD WORKING MP JUDGING HER BY THE JUST ENDED PRESIDENTIAL BY ELECTIONS. THE CONSTITUENCY DELIVERED THE HIGHEST VOTES TL PF (19410) AGAINST (9824) FOR IPNDTHE WHOLE OF LUSAKA PROVINCE IF IN THE WHOLE ZAMBIA. HER PF RESULTS SHOS THAT SHE IS IN TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE AT THE GRASS ROOT AND THE ELECTORATE.
THE LADY MUST BE CELEBRATED BY THE PF LEADERSHIP AS ONE OF THE MOST HARDING MP IN PF BASING ON WHAT WE HAVE SAID ABOVE.
THE CLEANING WORK PROGRAM SHE HAS EMBARKED ON JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT EACH TIME SHE SITA SHE IS PLANNING ON WHAT PROHECT SHE CAN EMBARK ON TO IMPROVE THE WELFARE OF HER PEOPLE IN HER MANDEVI CONSTITUENCY.
MANDEVU RESIDENCE THAT FOR YOUR SUPPORT TO YOUR AREA MP IN THE VOTES U DELIVERED ON HER BEHALF TO THE PF PRESIDENT…
I had no respect for Jean Kapata but now respect her for this cleaning drive. Cleaning should not only be for drainage but for the whole compound including markets. The whole city of a Lusaka is sure a dumping ground and needs cleaning and laws against street vending & throwing rubbish everywhere.
Whilst this effort is commendable at face value beneath this veneer lurks a bigger problem. The area MP is quoted as saying they will be cleaning every saturday but is silent on how to prevent the litter in the first place. Why not close the tap securely than keep mopping the floor?
Beyond this bold initiative which in my humble view is not sustainable lets embark on massive sensitisation on why people should not be throwing litter anyhow. May be,just may be we might slowly begin to see change in the people. This will call for consistency. The question is who will take the lead in sensitising the people?
Remember the Keep Zambia Campaign It started with a bang but fizzled out rather too soon.Well good effort mama but lets collectively look at long term and sustainable ways.
Jean can you spice up the project by giving participants a sachet of milk 1kg sugar or cooking oil depending on the age and gender as a way of motivation. Use a fraction from cdf because that cash is for developing the area not to sqandered by selfish individuals
