Soccer-Under20-Zambia surprise Uruguay, advance to quarters

Share

Uruguay 0:2 ZambiaZambia upset Uruguay 2-0 in the Under-20 World Cup on Saturday to reach the last 16, while Spain also advanced after a hat-trick from Adrian Lopez helped them beat Jordan 4-2.

Spain finished top of Group B on seven points while Zambia’s 2-0 victory earned them second place with four points.

Uruguay finished third in the group, also on four points, but also go through to the knockout stage as one of the top third-placed sides.

Clifford Mulenga put Zambia in front in the 22nd minute with a penalty after Uruguay keeper Mauro Goicoechea brought down Emmanuel Mayuka and was sent.

Zambia’s numerical advantage did not last long as they had Henry Nyambe dismissed for a crude challenge on Mauricio Prieto.

But the Africans doubled their lead six minutes after the break through Rodgers Kola and held on for the upset victory.

In the other Group B match, Lopez hit his hat-trick inside 38 minutes to put Spain firmly in command against Jordan.

Jordan fought back well after the break with a goal from Loiy Al Zaideh and a superb free-kick from Abdallah Salim to give Spain a real scare, but Marcos struck in the 79th minute to secure the victory.

Japan and Nigeria, both already assured of qualification to the last-16, drew 0-0 in their Group F game in Victoria.

Also in Group F, an injury-time goal from Jonathan McDonald gave Costa Rica a 2-1 victory over Scotland that kept their hopes alive of picking up a third-place qualification slot and eliminated the Scots.

Mark Reynolds put Scotland ahead in the 18th minute but Pablo Herrera equalised after the break and Costa Rica grabbed victory with the last kick of the game — striker McDonald blasting in from close range.

  3. # 5 The team has not yet reached the quarter finals, its the second round since there shall be 16 teams from group stages to see which team go through to the quarter finals. Zambia shall play Nigerai on 12 july in Ottawa. Good luck to the boys. Its time to revenge the defeat the team suffered against Nigeria, beat the “OLD MEN”

  5. Zambia has gone a step fwd from the 1999 U20 where the 1-5 defeat to the Brazil team led by Ronaldinho meant that we could not makeit among the 4 best third finishers.

The key in the next games will depend on the following:
    1. Kalusha to stop inteferring with the team
    2. Lwandimina to get a stable No 5 to replace Nyambe
    3. Fwayo finding his form to lead the Zed attack
    4. The boys receiving their due bonus to inspire them in the next match

The key players to watch, Njobvu, Sunzu and Mayuka.

  6. #11 has given a precise analysis that we as a country should try to achieve before we play the Nigerian under 35 side.Go boyz go. We are behind you and be assured of our support. Iam more noisier in Dublin than i have always been. You make me proud

  7. Awe kwena ndemutasha saana pamulimo mulebomba BACHIPOLOPOL. apo epashili pakuleka. I think We will maintain the same winning mentality GO GO CHIPOLOPOLO!!!.

  8. Lets help this boy to get into some universities in the USA and other countries were they have such programs. The USA is just using school and universsity and college programs. If you have 15 play out on this kindy of program you will not go wrong as a sports ministry. The under 20 boys are good,we need to help them as zambians.Soccer in the USA is caming up very well and we need to work with them.

  9. Zambia has talent and this is a team for 2010 World Cup.Nigeria and Zambia in the pre-quarter will be a spark. Nigeria is more experienced than Zambia But it will be a revenge for Zambia that they suffered in Congo in Feb. Zambia is also made alot of fouls in last 3 games that resulted in Red cards. Nigerai is beatable and i have confudence in the boys. We need a sharp strike force as well defense. Mwansa and Fwayo have performed below par. I hope they can pull up their socks. Go Zambia.

  10. we need to improve did see the game between Chile and Austria oh my dear it was interesting to watch the ball game and, ball possession, passes, stamina, zeal wanting to win. Gambia two performed very well beating Portgual though they like displince they are a team to recone.

  11. Congrats junior chipolopolo. Keep it up and remember all teams at the tourney are beatable. Do not be afraid of Nigeria, dont always believe the notion that history repeats itself: well, it doesnt always!!

  12. My young lads dont be big headed and think it will be easy just play your game you can beat Nigeria.. Just that they seem to have over 20 yr old players. The Nigerians are really old…

  15. Mt apologies to #22. Zambia is represented only by Clement Mulenga. This means that we have to vote for the lad. I have just visited fifa.com. I have voted for him.
