Government has engaged into an extensive training of mathematics teachers in order to improve the performance of pupils in the subject.
Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Childhood spokesperson Hillary Chipango said government has since launched a fast track programme in conjunction with DMI St. Eugene University.
Mr. Chipango said this is in order to upgrade the qualifications of mathematics teachers countrywide.
ZANIS reports that Mr. Chipango said teachers with certificates have been accorded an opportunity to upgrade to diploma level while those with diplomas are supposed to obtain degrees.
He said currently, over 2,000 teachers are being sponsored and are undergoing extensive training at DMI St .Eugene University.
Mr. Chipango further said the Ministry of Education is also sponsoring some mathematics students at the University of Zambia in order to improve the situation.
“The Ministry of Education has put in place major mitigation factors aimed at improving the poor performance in mathematics by pupils. It is not only mathematics teachers that are being trained but science teachers as well,” he said.
Government was very concerned about the poor performance in mathematics among school going children.
The Zambia Association For Mathematics has attributed the declining levels in performance to among other things, the change in the school curriculum.
Recently, the association held a national conference in Livingstone that attracted over 350 mathematics teachers to discuss challenges that they are facing with regard to the change in the school curriculum.

I wish they could revise the maths syllabus for high school….Syllabus D is too low level. We need to make additional mathematics the new maths from grade 11 to 12.
@seasoned engineer,I agree with you 100%,in fact additional mathematics should start from grade 10.

Good but don’t neglect the other subjects. Do the same for their teachers
Pure maths 4030/1/2 is easier than 4004. I find it hard to understand why some people fear 4030 than o lever maths. Anyway everything works with determination and interest.
Sad enough maths teachers have used this subject have xex with young girls in the name of helping them.

Iam not a mathematics teacher as at now but am very good at maths. Is there a programme to co opt those who would like to join in the teaching of mathematics and if so how can one do so. May the editor of Lusaka times find out that for me and get me posted

Mr. Chipango does not even know what his Ministry is doing. This communication sounds like coming out from a street speculator. Give the facts as they are, if you are a spokesperson. The fact is that the so called fast track started a long time ago (2-3 years ago). There are several universities participating in the programme i.e. DMI St EUGENE, UNZA, Lusaka University, Zambian Open University. Mr Chipango tell us how many of these diploma holding teachers are being upgraded to degree level (we have a belief that degrees teach)?. Which University is offering what. Your story about Maths being offered at DMI St Eugene might need checking with Teacher Education and Specialized Services Department in your Ministry.
