Ndola’s Ndeke residents go without water for 2 weeks

5

Ndola’s Ndeke township has been hit by an erratic water supply for two weeks and residents are demanding an explanation from the Kafubu Water Supply and Sanitation Company.

ZANIS reports that in random interviews conducted in the area yesterday, Chalwe Mambwe, one of the residents complained that the water utility company (Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company) has failed the residents of Ndeke township.

Ms. Mambwe complained that in this time of the Covid-19 pandemic, water is an essential commodity which no one should be deprived of.

“No one can survive without water. But this is the situation that Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company has subjected us to,” she said.

She added that, “whenever we want water, we have to draw it from homes that have shallow wells because the ones with boreholes do not allow people to draw water from their houses saying electricity is too expensive,” she explained.

Another resident, Chansa Muleya, said life without running water for two weeks has not been easy especially that she is nursing a baby.

Ms. Muleya said mothers are facing difficulties as they have to wash baby clothes very often.

And the water utility company has admitted the erratic supply of Water to Ndeke township.

Director for Engineering at Kafubu Water Supply and Sanitation Company, Bernard Phiri, explained that problem was due to the bursting of a water pipe supplying Ndeke.

“We have a team on the ground working to ensure that water supply is restored in the area,” he said.

Mr. Phiri said the water utility company is hopeful that water supply will be restored by the end of the day tomorrow.

He has since called for patience from Ndeke township residents as the company is working round the clock to ensure that water supply is restored.

MISA urges journalists to get vaccinated against Covid-19

3

The Media Institute for Southern Africa-Zambia chapter (MISA-Zambia) has encouraged journalists to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and not to shun away from the vaccine.

MISA-Zambia Chairperson Hellen Mwale said much as the vaccine is not mandatory, the media personnel should consider protecting themselves by being vaccinated because they are front liners and key players in the fight against the pandemic.

Ms. Mwale told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that journalists should reciprocate by going ahead to get vaccinated because government is only trying to protect them as they carry out their duties.

She observed that government prioritised journalists to be among the first group of people to get the vaccine.

She said this is a very good move hence journalists need to appreciate that stance by government.

“What is it of benefit to journalists to shun away from getting the vaccine then later on getting sick at the end of it all? So the best is for all journalists to go and get vaccinated,” she said.

Ms. Mwale reiterated that there is no government that would bring in a vaccine which would be harmful to people.

She has since called for enhanced sensitisations to people across the country in order for them to understand and appreciate the benefits of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Ms. Mwale has meanwhile encouraged journalists to work hand in hand with the appropriate authorities in order to sensitize the general public on the Covid-19 vaccine.

Zambian ambushed and killed in Burkina Faso rebel attacks

13

A well known Zambian born Irish ranger has been killed in Burkina Faso along with two Spanish journalists as they were filming a documentary about anti-poaching activities in the Western African nation when their convoy was ambushed.

The killings on Monday came as violence is increasing in Burkina Faso and the security situation in the Sahel is deteriorating, especially in the border area of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

Burkina Faso has seen attacks from many armed groups, several of them linked to the Islamic State and Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

The conservation organization Chengeta Wildlife said its co-founder and chief executive, Rory Young, was the third victim.

Mr. Beriain and Mr. Fraile were following Mr. Young, a Zambia-born Irish national based in Livingstone for their documentary, Chengeta Wildlife said on Facebook.

“It is with deepest sorrow and regret that Chengeta Wildlife confirms the death of Rory Young, our co-founder and CEO. Rory was leading a wildlife protection patrol in Arly National Park, Burkina Faso on 26th April 2021 when they were attacked by terrorists which resulted in his death and that of two Spanish journalists who were capturing his efforts to protect precious wildlife,” the statement read.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased right now. We respectfully request your patience, time and understanding as we deal with the loss of our inspirational leader.”

Mr. Young was a well-respected guide and ranger who had worked in several African countries, and whose organization provides a mix of traditional training to detect poaching groups, and crime scene investigation skills. Mr. Young had said that his organization was training 900 rangers and other personnel last year to track poaching and wildlife trafficking activities.

In his last Instagram post on Friday, Mr. Young said learning to track animals was like learning to read.

“It opens up a whole world of knowledge,” he wrote.

In 2017, Mr. Young of Chengeta Wildlife told The New York Times that the organization’s anti-poaching activities were only possible if it managed to build constructive relationships with the local populations to stay updated on events in the region.

“Without the community there is no solution,” Mr. Young said.

Yet Mr. Young also often acknowledged the risks of the rangers’ mission. In July, he wrote on Instagram about training local rangers.

“We do that with them on the frontline,” he wrote.

The ambush, in the reserve of Pama, part of the Arli National Park, occurred near Pendjari National Park, where a guide from Benin and two French tourists were abducted in 2019.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain confirmed the deaths of the two Spanish journalists, whom he identified on Twitter as David Beriain and Roberto Fraile.

Movistar+, the Spanish television platform for which Mr. Beriain was filming the documentary, confirmed that Mr. Young was the third victim.

The two journalists were part of a group of 40 who were ambushed on Monday in a nature reserve in eastern Burkina Faso near the border with Benin, said Arancha González Laya, Spain’s foreign minister.

The authorities in Burkina Faso said in a statement on Tuesday evening that the country had faced “a resurgence of terrorist acts” since Sunday, and that around 10 people had been killed in several attacks

Patrick Phiri : Emulate Fallen 1993 Gabon Heroes

Legendary coach Patrick Phiri says all Zambians should emulate the patriotism demonstrated by the victims of the 1993 Gabon Air Disaster

Zambia is today marking the 28th anniversary of the disaster that claimed the National Soccer Team on the way to Senegal for a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

In a phone interview from his Lusaka base, Phiri, the ex-Zambia coach and player, said the fallen heroes served the nation passionately and diligently.

‘The grief continues to increase as years pass. They were heroes who dedicated themselves to serving the nation,’ Phiri said.

‘It’s not just footballers who should learn to work for the nation but every Zambian. We should all emulate their heart to work for the nation in order to develop our country.’

He added: ‘The fallen heroes have encouraged all of us to continue serving the nation diligently.’

18 players, technical staff, a FAZ chairman, crew members and a journalist were the victims of the disaster.

Zesco United Back to Business as Usual in The League Race

Zesco United have bounced back from their disappointing ABSA Cup final loss to open an eight point lead at the top of the FAZ Super Division table.

Zesco today came from behind to edge visiting Red Arrows 2-1 in Ndola just four days after losing the ABSA Cup final to Lusaka Dynamos on penalties.

Arrows made a false start at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium when taking a lead in the first minute through Diarra Allassane.

International defender Adrian Chama ensured that the two teams went to the break with an even scoreline after converting a penalty awarded three minutes into first half added time.

Attacker Kelvin Mubanga scored the winner for Zesco ten minutes from time with a scorcher as his side moved to 49 points after playing 23 matches.

Zesco are eight points ahead of second placed Forest Rangers who have played 26 matches.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Lusaka Dynamos jumped four places up to number four after thrashing Prison Leopards 3-0.

Striker Emmanuel Chabula’s brace and another goal by Marvin Jere helped Dynamos to move to 37 points after playing 24 matches.

In other games, Indeni overcame Nkwazi 3-2 in Ndola and Young Green Eagles edged bottom side Kitwe United 1-0 in Kafue.

Attorney General Asks Court to dismiss with costs Petition Challenging President Lungu Eligibility for August 12 Elections

46

ATTORNEY General Likando Kalaluka has suggested that the petition seeking an interpretation on whether President Edgar Lungu can run for a third term in the August 12 elections be dismissed with costs.

Kalaluka has argued that the petition will prejudice the Head of State because there are few days remaining for presidential candidates to file their nomination papers.

The chief legal advisor of government argued that the interpretation of Articles 106(1)(3) and (6)(a) and (b) in so far as they relate to the eligibility of President Edgar Lungu to contest the August 12 general election as a presidential candidate has already been decided upon by the Constitutional Court in the Danny Pule case.

He also said Article 70 of the Constitution was clear that a member of parliament vacated or lost his seat when the individual was serving a custodial sentence.

Kalaluka has since opposed the petition by Katuba UPND member of parliament Bampi Kapalasa and Lusaka resident Joseph Busenga seeking an interpretation on whether President Lungu can contest this year’s general election after being sworn into office twice.

Kapalasa and Busenga’s petitions have been consolidated following an application by Busenga that the cases be joined and heard at the same time, in order to utilise the Court’s resources effectively and efficiently as they raised similar questions.

However, Kalaluka has filed a notice of intention to raise preliminary issues at the next sitting for the Court to determine whether or not Articles 106(1)(3) and (6)(a) and (b) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act no.2 of 2016 being sought by the petitioners had been decided upon.

This is in reference to the case of Dan Pule and three others vs the Attorney General, PF secretary general Davies Mwila, UPND secretary general Steven Katuka and the Law Association of Zambia in which a selective judgment was delivered in 2018.

Kalaluka also wants a determination on whether the court has the power to determine the petition as it had already pronounced itself on the eligibility of President Lungu in the Danny Pule case.

He has prayed that the court quickly disposes of the matter as it has a bearing on the holding of this year’s elections.

“The court may want to take notice of the Electoral Commission of Zambia electoral calendar for the general elections which shows that the payment of nomination fees for aspiring Presidential candidates is slated for May 1 to 9, 2021,” said Kalaluka.

“If this application is not determined as a matter of urgency, it has potential to prejudice the targeted individual in these proceedings.”

The Matter comes up on May 3 before the full bench of the court for the hearing of Kalaluka’s application.

Rename ZAMISE in honour of KK – Ngwale

11

Goodwill Ambassador for Persons with Disabilities Elijah Ngwale, has called on President Edgar Lungu to rename the Zambia Institute of Special Education (ZAMISE) after First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda in honour of his 97th birthday which falls today.

Mr Ngwale has suggested that the name of the institution should instead be changed to Kenneth Kaunda Education College for Persons with Disabilities.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS on the sidelines of a birthday celebration in Lusaka for persons with disabilities which was held on the eve of Dr Kaunda’s birthday in Lusaka yesterday, noted with concern that there is no institution with a bias towards special education and the plight of the disabled that has been named after the first republican president.

Mr Ngwale said Dr Kaunda contributed immensely to the wellbeing of people living with disabilities during his time as republican president.

He said under Dr Kaunda’s tenure, his government’s philosophy of humanism favoured the disabled more than even democracy.

Mr Ngwale said renaming the institution after Dr Kaunda would be fitting considering that the former president is also a goodwill ambassador for persons with disabilities.

He enlisted numerous success stories the first republican president scored for people living with disabilities.

“It was also during the time of Dr Kaunda that he built National Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities in Ndola. It was also during the time of Dr Kaunda that the government took over education for persons with disabilities because previously it was under missionaries,” Mr Ngwale said.

He said President Lungu has a listening ear expressing confidence that he will act upon the call.

“President Lungu is a consulting President. On 5 March, 2015 His Excellency called me to State House, asked me what he can do for him, I asked him to reinstate 300 people who were declared redundant by the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities in 2013. The people were reinstated,” Mr Ngwale said.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda is celebrating his 97th birthday today 28th April, 2021.

Nkana Has Gained An Asset in Ex Power Dynamos Star Ngonga

0

Ex-Power Dynamos assistant coach Mwenya Chipepo believes his old club shouldn’t have let go of striker Alex Ng’onga who has since joined their Kitwe rivals Nkana.

Ng’onga last week resigned from Power whom he first joined in 2009 to 2015 and later rejoined them in 2017 after a brief spell at Gabonese club CF Mounana.

He scored on his debut for Kalampa last Saturday in their 2-1 home loss to Indeni, who are coached by Chipepo.

In an interview, Chipepo tipped Ng’onga to excel in Wusakile.

“I don’t want to comment about Power Dynamos. I will just talk about my boy Alex. You know players like Alex, as a coach you must know how to handle them. You must read the player; you must know how this player is. Sometimes he can make a mistake but you can’t throw him away he is a son of Power Dynamos,” he said.

Lack of game time and an acrimonious relationship with the technical bench forced the striker to leave Arthur Davies.

“Look at what he has done today and if he gains full fitness how is he going to be playing? Because he is national team material so to Power Dynamos I can say that they have missed a very important player. It is a gain for Nkana, it is a plus maybe I can say double gain,” Chipepo said.

Ng’onga won the 2011 league title with Power and helped them to a second place finish in 2014.

Cleaning Association of Zambia commends Government for offering Cleaning Contracts to Local companies

4

Cleaning Association of Zambia (CAZ) has commended government for ensuring that local companies benefit from the available cleaning contracts.

In a statement, Association President Lawrence Makumbi said various cleaning companies in the country are now benefiting from the cleaning contracts coming from local institutions such as National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA), National Airports Corporation and Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMSA) formerly Medical Stores.

Mr Makumbi said this has been made possible by government’s decision to put in place Statutory Instrument number 22 of 2019.

“The Association is grateful to government for what it has done to the cleaning sector, in the first quarter of this year the sector has performed exceptionally well looking at the number of institutions it is working with,” he said.

He added that the National Airports Corporation is expected to give the cleaning contract of the new Kenneth Kunda International Airport to a Zambian owned company that will show case expertise cleaning at the international standard infrastructure.

Mr Makumbi noted that this is great empowerment for the locals.

He further commended the a Lusaka City Council for the good working relationship with the Association, adding that most cleaning companies have so far been trained in areas fumigating and sensitization of public places by professionals from the department of public health at LCC.

“Now we have professional trained sanitizers that are making sure that the pandemic is eradicated with the help of professionals from the department of public health at the council.

Traditional leaders vying for political office should resign – PF

The ruling party Patriotic Front (PF) in Monze District have called for the immediate resignation of Tyson Hamaamba from his position as Chief Choongo’s Prime Minister (Ngambela) following his adoption to stand as councillor for Choongo East ward under the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket.

And the Patriotic Front (PF) in Monze District has joined the national chorus calling on the Zambia Police to enhance security ahead of the campaigns to ensure that peace, and unity is sustained in the country.

In a walk-in interview today, Bweengwa PF Constituency Chairman, Mainza Kabwata urged the Choongo Royal establishment to choose another Prime Minister (Ngambela) after Mr Tyson Hamaamba joined politics.

He observed that allowing Mr. Hamaamba to continue holding to his position would disadvantage other political players as he allegedly welds influence among headmen in his current position as prime minister to Chief Choongo.

“As PF, we demand for the immediate resignation of Mr Tyson Hamaamba from his position as Chief Choongo’s Ngambela since he has decided to join politics and stand as councillor under the UPND ticket. If he does not do that then we shall face difficulties in campaigning as he has most influence over all the village headmen,” said Mr. Kabwata.

But in a telephone interview Chief Choongo says Mr. Hamaamba has already been put on leave pending retirement and that he has since relieved of him of his duties as Prime Minister.

His Royal Highness said he just heard of his adoption on the UPND ticket recently and that he would relieve him of his duties officially when he returns home.

“You have done well to call me to clarify this matter because my Ngambela (Mr Hamaamba) has been hiding information from me of his political ambitions and only told me recently that he has been adopted to stand as councillor for Choongo East under the UPND ticket. And I have since given him leave pending retirement which will be done officially once I come back from Lusaka,” said Chief Choongo.

And Mr. Kabwata noted that peace before, during and even after the general elections was cardinal adding that security wings should ensure that peace was maintained at all costs.

Mr. Kabwata urged all political parties to preach love, peace and unity during the campaigns and avoid political violence of any form.

He added that there was need for all political players to conduct issue based campaigns that will build the country and thus ensure peace and unity are maintained.

“As we begin campaigns our message from PF here is Monze is that we need to see the Zambia Police enhance security for all political parties to ensure peace and unity are sustained in the country,” said Mr. Kabwata.

He added that for its part the ruling party in Monze will direct its energies to issues based campaigns strongly backed by the massive development it had delivered to the people in all parts of the District.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kabwata says the PF has continued to receive defectors especially in Bweengwa constituency where many senior UPND ward officials have defected to the ruling party in Keemba ward and further urged PF members to warmly welcome all defectors to the ruling party.

He said the PF was ready for the campaigns once parliament dissolves on 12th May and boosted that the ruling party was highly favoured to win most seats in the District following developmental projects completed among them schools, health facilities, Milling plant, and roads.

Mushimba requests Japan to increase scholarships

8

Minister of Higher Education Brian Mushimba has called for more education sector collaboration between Japan and Zambia. Dr. Mushimba says Zambia can learn a lot from Japan especially in the area of science and technology.

He has said science and technology are key in helping Zambia attain its developmental aspirations.

The Minister has also requested the Japanese government to increase the number of scholarships being offered to Zambian students to study in Japan.

He says having more Zambians taking up Japanese scholarships will further boost the cordial bilateral relations existing between the two nations.

Dr. Mushimba was speaking in Lusaka when Japanese Ambassador to Zambia Mizuuchi Ryuta called on him.

And the Japanese Ambassador has encouraged prospective beneficiaries of Japanese scholarships to develop an interest in mathematics and science.

Mr. Ryuta revealed that most scholarships offered by the Japanese government require students to be proficient in mathematics and science, adding that most Zambian applicants fall short of this requirement.

He however commended the University of Zambia department of veterinary that the Japanese government is currently sponsoring for the outstanding performance of the students.

About defections: A Baby born in a prison cell does not realise that the bed and the toilet should not be in the same room

9

By Nkonkomalimba Kafunda

The stage managed highly publicized defections from the United Party for National Development to the ruling Patriotic Front are not only misleading but have the potential to create more rifts in an already divided nation.

The defections are misleading because they give simpletons the impression that the PF is doing such a remarkably tremendous job that senior members of the only credible opposition party have been suitably impressed to an extent that they are ditching their own party to join the ‘progressive, forward looking, visionary’, and all other manner of superlatives now used to describe the ruling party. The level of deceit knows no bounds.

The truth is that some defections for example those of Parliamentarians Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa and Teddy Kasonso are because the two were in bad standing having gone against the UPND by voting with the PF in supporting the contentious Bill 10, the failed piece of legislation that was intended to further entrench the PF’s hold on power.

For others the defections are purely economic as the PF are in the market shopping for spineless, unprincipled opposition leaders. On Sunday April 25 UPND spokesperson and outgoing Choma central MP Cornelius Mweetwa revealed on Hot FM Radio that PF leaders Richard Musukwa (Mines Minister) , Bowman Lusambo (Lusaka Province Minister) and Edify Hamukale (Southern Province Minister) offered him K6 million to join the PF, a claim rebuffed by Musukwa, who is also PF Mobilization Committee Chairman, the following day.

The defectors, instead of working towards removing PF and stopping the country’s economic malaise and democratic credentials from worsening by canvassing votes from the electorate to usher in a responsible, competent government whose hallmark will be competence, integrity, accountability and honesty, among other virtues, they took the proverbial thirty pieces of silver and went to bed with the devil, figuratively.

Alarmingly, society or parts of it have accepted kleptocracy as a form of government and choose to join in enjoying the fruits of thievery, pilferage and pillage choosing materialism over integrity and morality.

My faith in humanity gives me hope that the great majority of voters will not be swayed by cash and other ‘gifts’ to vote in a manner detrimental to their immediate and future well being.

It should sadden all right thinking members of our social order that historically elections have not been based on issues but rather on personalities, their venom against each other and the campaign regalia, food and alcohol individual candidates dish out.

We must strive to attain a higher standard of humanity for ourselves, our children and their children after them, meaning we must emulate the best practices from the best societies on earth. It follows therefore that it is folly for our society to be content that we are better off than others in sub Saharan Africa that have had civil wars, military dictatorships, rebel insurgences, economic mismanagement, avoidable mass starvation, and other man made calamities. Our goal should be a prosperous, just, equitable liberal democracy with respect for the rights of citizens, with government with full consent of the majority who voted of there own free will without coercion inducement or intimidation. Most importantly no individual or group of individuals should be allowed to ascend to power fraudulently through rigged elections.

In a nutshell, instead of thanking the heavens that we are not like failed state Somalia or phantom state Central Africa republic, we should be asking for guidance to reach standards achieved by Northern European states like Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.

But then our people lack exposure so may be excused as they know nothing better and think that our current miserable state of affairs is the norm rather than the exception; A Baby born in a prison cell does not realise that the bed and the toilet should not be in the same room.

Finally, how do we as concerned patriots (not to be confused with members of the Patriotic Front) ensure that the August 12 outcome reflects the will of the people? Do the institutions charged with the responsibility of holding free fair elections are up to the task? Will the state controlled media cover all political players equitably? Are the police able and willing to create and maintain a level playing field? Does our judicial system have the inbuilt capacity to settle the inevitable electoral disputes impartially?
