Reject politicians sowing seeds of tribalism and regionalism, Lusambo tells Church

48

Patriotic Front Copperbelt mobilization coordinator Hon Bowman Lusambo has called on the church to reject politicians sowing seeds of tribalism and regionalism.

Hon Lusambo says government will continue to strengthen the relationship it has with the church in order to foster development in the country but called for politics devoid of divisions based on tribe, region or race.

He was speaking this morning when he attended a fundraising Sunday service for Dominion Church International building project in Choma, Southern Province where he donated a 50,000 Kwacha towards the project.

He said the church and government are inseparable because they serve the same constituents of people regardless of where the hail from.

“If not addressed, tribalism will destroy this country,” he told the congregation and called for oneness regardless of tribe or region for the sake of the county’s development.
“The church provides the spiritual support, while us as government ensures we create an enabling environment for the improvement of people’s welfare” Hon Lusambo said adding that government wants to provide empowerment initiatives for citizens both in and outside the church through a diversified but locally driven economy.

He said President Lungu has shown that by dedicating his time out of state house to go all over the country to work for the betterment of the country and encouraged people to work hard and reject the spirit of laziness.

“So am urging you to support anyone regardless of tribe when they come to work in any part of the country because we are one Zambia one Nation” he said.

Meanwhile,Hon Lusambo took time to encourage congregants to register as voters and have the opportunity to choose leaders of their choice.

He also called on congregants to carefully scrutinize their leaders when it comes to putting national interests above partizan politics in reference to Bill 10 which he said meant to address constitutional challenges even if “it is water under the bridge” now.

And Dominion Church International pastor Kebby Nawa thanked the PF government for the “good and admirable” works they are doing to improve people lives and pledged the support of the church in creating a healthy society.

Farmers urged to plant certified seed in the face of climate Change

1

The Ministry of Agriculture in Lundazi district of Eastern province has advised farmers to adhere to good agriculture practices and plant certified seed for enhanced agriculture production.

District Agriculture Marketing and Development Officer Charles Mwanza observed the need for farmers in the region to take agriculture as a business and improve their living standards.

Mr. Mwanza noted that with the continued changes in the climatic conditions caused by climate change there is need for farmers to embrace good farming activities that will help them get maximum benefits from their labour.

He cited good seed as one of the requirements that farmers need to embrace for them to get good yields.

Mr. Mwanza was speaking in Lundazi yesterday when Zambezi Seed Company distributed about 500 kilograms of maize seed and 300 kilograms of Sorghum to over 100 small scale farmers of Mwase Lundazi area.

” It is important to know that time has come for farmers to start taking farming as a serious business by adhering to good farming practices which also cause for improved or certified varieties for us to get good yields especially now with the challenges in rainfall pattern due to climate change,” he added.

He also explained that the Ministry of agriculture has a task to reduce poverty among households through encouraging farmers to practice good farming practices and using good inputs.

Mr.Mwanza added that farmers should also practice conservation farming as an additional to good seed and inputs that they are given by government and other stakeholders.

He further thanked Zambezi seed for providing sustainable seed varieties such as early maturing seed that can also be partially recycled.

And Zambezi seed representative Evans Ngoma has pledged his company’s support to vulnerable but viable small scale farmers in order to improve their farming activities.

Mr.Ngoma who is also Buy Zed campaign Founder said Zambezi seed will continue to engage with other stakeholders and the Ministry of Agriculture to promote the sustainable farming practices as a way of ensuring food security among households.

“Us we are determined to see our vulnerable but viable farmers get support of improving their farming activities and increasing yields thereby promoting food security among the community,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Mwase Lundazi has cautioned his subjects against selling the seed that they have been given but rather put it to good use so that families can benefit.

The Chief who spoke through his representative Howkings Chirwa thanked Zambezi seed for supplementing government efforts in the farmer input distribution process among small scale farmers.

“Your trust and confidence in us will never be abused and we’ll not let you down…kwashala fye panono (there’s little time remaining before we cross over) because music is the best communicator; it is the best platform and your music has given us strength to soldier on and we’ll continue to fight until we achieve that which the people of Zambia want,” He said.

Ailing Nkana Sideline Chabinga

1

Nkana have sent Coach Manfred Chabinga on forced leave.

The defending FAZ Super Division champions have sent Chabinga on leave barely seven competitive games gone into the 2020/2021 season.

“Nkana Football Club Coach Manfred Chabinga has been sent on indefinite leave with immediate effect. Nkana FC management will give more details on the matter to the public in due course,” Nkana said in a statement.

Nkana have now put assistant coach Kaunda Simonda and ex-Chipolopolo and Golden Arrows defender Joseph Musonda interim charge.

Chabinga has been in interim charge at Nkana since late 2019 following Beston Chambshi’s departure in November 2019.

He led Nkana to an unprecedented 13th league Zambian league title and later guided the Kitwe giants to the season opening 2020/2021 Charity Shield.

However, Chabinga’s start to the 2020/2021 season has been unconvincing.

Nkana have won one league game and then posted two defeats and as many draws from five top-flight matches.

But Nkana continued to display poor form in the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League particularly in Saturdays 0-0 home draw against Bantu FC at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe that saw them advance 1-0 on aggregate to the second round of the competition.

Lesson 3 from America: With a bit more loyalty, Nevers Mumba might have ruled Zambia

24

By Dr Parkie Mbozi

ONE OLD adage says, “Patience pays”. I would add another one, “Loyalty pays more.” A third one goes, “A vulture is a patient bird” (because it waits for an animal to die on its own and rot before it pounces).

All these adages apply to the ‘thesis’ of this article. It is that if only Nervous Mumba, the current President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), had been as patient to the cause and loyal to the appointing authority as Joe Biden has been, he might have ruled Zambia. Biden’s election as the 46th President of the United States of America offers to our local politicians a lesson about the rewards of loyalty, patience and perseverance.

Mumba and Biden have a few things in common. First, both kicked off their working careers in different fields before ending up in politics. Second, both saved as vice President and were both unexpectedly hand-picked by their boss. Third, before their unexpected appointments as Veep both failed their respective individual shots at the Presidency, twice in Biden’s case. These similarities notwithstanding, the two guys have different approaches and experiences in a variety of ways. Of interest to this article is that: 1. Biden stayed loyal to the appointing authority and saved in the position for the two full terms of his boss while Mumba was fired within 17 months of his appointment. 2. Biden has been rewarded with the highest post in his homeland. 3. Mumba, on the other hand, is fighting for the Presidency of Zambia which I argue that was within his grasp on a silver platter.

Let’s look at Biden’s case first before we contrast it to Mumba’s. He was raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Delaware. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1965 and a law degree from Syracuse University in New York in 1968, Biden began his career as an attorney before quickly turning to politics, serving on the New Castle county council from 1970 to 1972. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, becoming the fifth youngest senator in history.

About a month after his entry into the US senate, Biden’s wife and infant daughter were killed in a car accident, and his two sons were seriously injured. In a recent CNN documentary Biden reveals that contemplated suspending his political career and even committing suicide after this tragedy. However, Biden was persuaded to join the Senate in 1973, and he went on to win reelection six times, becoming Delaware’s longest-serving senator. In addition to his role as U.S. senator, Biden also was an adjunct professor (1991–2008) at the Wilmington, Delaware, branch of the Widener University School of Law.

As a senator, Biden focused on foreign relations, criminal justice, and drug policy. He served on the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, twice as its chair (2001–03; 2007–09), and on the Committee on the Judiciary, serving as its chair from 1987 to 1995. He was particularly outspoken on issues related to the Kosovo conflict of the late ’90s, the Iraq War (2003–11), and even on apartheid in South Africa.

Biden pursued the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination but withdrew after it was revealed that parts of his campaign stump speech had been plagiarized from British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock without appropriate attribution. His 2008 presidential campaign never gained momentum, and he withdrew from the race after placing fifth in the Iowa Democratic caucus in January of that year. On August 23 2008 Barack Obama officially announced his selection of Biden as the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee, and on August 27 Obama and Biden secured the Democratic Party’s nomination. On November 4 the Obama-Biden ticket defeated the John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket. In November 2012 Obama and Biden were reelected for a second term.

As vice president, Biden played an active role in the administration, serving as an influential adviser to Obama and a vocal supporter of his initiatives. In addition, he was tasked with notable assignments. He helped avert several budget crises and played a key role in shaping U.S. policy in Iraq. In 2015 his eldest son, Beau, died from brain cancer; Biden recounted the experience in Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose (2017). Biden, who enjoyed high favourability ratings, announced that he would not enter the 2016 presidential election, noting that the family was still grieving. Instead, he campaigned for Hillary Clinton, who ultimately lost the election to Donald Trump.

Biden’s close relationship with Obama was evident when the latter surprised him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, with distinction, on January 12, 2017, just days before they left office. When Obama presented the rarely given honour, he referred to Biden as “my brother.” Later that year Biden and his wife established the Biden Foundation, a charitable group involved in various causes. Biden remained very close to the Obamas even while out of office.

During the primaries for 2020 Democratic Party nominations, Biden did not hide his wish that Michelle Obama would be his running mate. Biden’s unwavering loyalty to Obama was a key factor in his endorsements for nominee of the Democratic Party by influential African-American groups, such as the Black Caucus and Black Lives Matter, and individuals, such as House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn. Obama was also a key factor in Biden’s campaigns especially in key swing states, most of which Biden went on to win. “Michigan, Joe Biden is my brother. I love Joe Biden and he will be a great president,” said Obama during a joint campaign in Michigan.

Obama’s sharp criticisms of his successor Donald Trump were catalytic to the public resentment of the Trump administration. Obama passionately accused Trump of failing to take the coronavirus pandemic and the presidency seriously. His eloquence is said to have helped energize voters across the country, especially black voters, at a time of hopelessness due to the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic. It ultimately helped deliver the 46th Presidency of the US to the Biben-Harris ticket.

Mumba was born in 1960 in Chitambo at Chitambo Mission, northern Province. He grew up with his parents and 11 siblings in Chinsali, in a religious home. His father Sunday Mumba was a teacher and pastor at the United Church of Zambia. He was baptised as a member of the UCZ by Rev. Paul Mushindo. Mumba had his primary education at Chinsali Basic School. After getting very good grades at his Grade 7 examination, he was selected to go to one of the best schools in the country, Hilcrest Technical High School. Whilst there, he joined the Zambia Cadet Cooperative Force (ZCCF) and rose to the rank of Provincial Commandant for Southern Province.

He then went to the Zambia National Service for one-year compulsory training. Here he had hoped to become a full military man, but he changed his mind, left, and went to work in the mines on the Copperbelt province. Whilst on the Copperbelt he joined the Pentecostal Movement and joined Maranathan Church where he became a church elder under Bishop Sky Banda at age 19. The following year, in 1980, he left and founded Victory Bible Church and Victory Ministries International where he excelled as an evangelical television preacher.

In 1997, he founded the National Christian Coalition (NCC), a Christian political movement. It was registered as a political party in 1998. It participated in the 2001 Zambia general election, where Mumba emerged as 5th out of over 11 candidates.

In May 2003 President Levy Mwanawasa appointed Mumba as vice-president, ignoring dissent within his own party. Mumba took over from Enoch Kavindele who sacked together Finance Minister Emmanuel Kasonde, Information Minister Newstead Zimba and Inspector General of police Francis Zonda.

On October 4, 2004 (17 months after his appointment) Mumba was sacked as Vice President for Insubordination. He was accused of sparking a diplomatic row with neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over claims he made that then fugitive Xavier Chungu, the former Zambian intelligence boss, was being hosted in the DRC and Congolese businessmen were funding Zambia’s opposition. Mwanawasa had admonished Mumba over the accusations and apologised to the Congolese government. Mumba, however, refused to acknowledge that his comments were imprudent, much to Mwanawasa chagrin.

“I am Mr Mumba’s boss and I am entitled to some form of respect in line with the oath that ministers, including the vice president, take when I appoint them. Since he did not regret what he said, I regret that I appointed him and I have with immediate effect removed him from office,” the Daily Mail newspaper quoted Mwanawasa as saying. Lupando Mwape took over from Mumba. However, Mwape was unavailable for re-appointment as Veep having lost his Lukasha parliamentary to the PF in the 2006 general election. This paved the way for Rupiah Banda’s equally unexpected entry as nominated MP and subsequently Mwanawasa’s Veep for the 2006 – 2011 term. Banda ‘resurrected’ Mumba’s political career by appointing him Zambia’s High Commissioner to Canada from 2009 until 2011.

On 25 May 2012, Mumba was elected as President of the MMD, which had been in opposition since its defeat in the 2011 presidential election. He had a go at the Republican Presidential in January 2015 where he amassed a paltry 14,609 votes (0.88%). He missed out on the 2016 elections due to court actions over the Presidency of the MMD.

It can be argued that had Mumba remained loyal to his appointing authority, he would have been with him for the second term (2006 – 2011) until Mwanawasa’s untimely death on August 19, 2008. He might have gone on to win the 2008 by-election, as Banda did, and, who knows, the 2011 general election.

Only time will tell whether the likes of GBM, Canisius Banda and Richard Kapita will not wish they had remained loyal and persevered a little longer.

Government Secures K500 Million Civil Servants Debt swap

55

Government has secured 500 Million Kwacha to help clear outstanding debts for civil servants through swapping of what government owes workers such as leave benefits and settling allowances among others, Public Service Management Division,(PSMD) Permanent Secretary, Boniface Chimbwali has announced.

And Mr Chimbwali says a lot of considerations were put in place during the negotiations between the government and public service unions to reaching to the eight percent salary increment across the board.

Mr Chimbwali was speaking yesterday, when he addressed civil servants for Lukulu and Mitete districts in western province at Lukulu council chambers on matters to do with PSMD activities.

Mr Chimbwali said economic changes, COVID-19 effects among others were put into considerations and has since called on officers to embrace the increment.

“In fact it will be paramount that civil servants undergo financial literacy skills in future to avoid officers having lot of debts which cannot to be met on their payslips,” he stated.

At the same meeting, Teaching Services Commission Chairperson, Stanley Muhango directed that all those who have been on acting positions in the teaching service for more than six months be confirmed immediately.

The duo are in western province to monitor the ongoing staff head count exercise as well as meet civil servants in central work places and get their challenges as well as successes.

Does socialism encourage laziness?

15

By Fred M’membe

Hello Comrade, when you have a chance, kindly reflect on the common assumption that socialism encourages laziness.

Great thanks Comrade and here is my brief reflection on the assumption:

The laziness trope is often used as a way to kind of discredit socialism overall. However, there’s some truth to this. In the experience in the Soviet Union and Cuba and Eastern Europe, there was a point in the development of socialism where workers were less motivated than certainly everyone that imagined what socialism would be thought would happen.

Now, before getting into that, let’s look at, first of all, the increase in productivity and the growth of the economy, industrialisation in the Soviet Union during the 1920s on was astounding. The fact that this semi-feudal country industrialised so quickly that it actually could fend off this highly developed industrial power of Nazi Germany, and eventually win that war, the extent to how hard people worked and how much they sacrificed to be into that position, you can’t call that laziness. Let’s not forget the Soviet Union got to space before the United States. In a very short amount of time after World War II, the Soviet Union built a nuclear weapon to counteract the nuclear threat of the United States, and the extent to which it was an offensive threat to the United States and that the Soviet Union was in a defensive position.

When people have a guaranteed job and you can never get fired, when people have a guaranteed standard of living, they have healthcare, they have schooling, there’s no fear of poverty, which is more or less what there was in the Soviet Union, people get lazy. And if there’s no competition, like if everyone gets paid the same no matter how hard you work, then why work hard?

The Soviet Union was incredibly innovative. Some of the most amazing inventions came out of the Soviet Union, including, if you go back to the beginning, the Soviet Union gives birth to modern filmmaking and so on, and all kinds of developments in the sciences.
So if you look at the stages of the Soviet Union, for a long time, it was very productive, as you see, what I said about taking on Germany and getting to space and so on. And then also, in certain sectors of the economy, it remained very productive, especially the sciences. The Soviet Union was able to compete with the United States in the development of technology.

But on this one specific thing – and it’s a complicated subject, we can’t get into it all now – but there was something that developed in the Soviet Union, and it happened in Cuba, and to some extent in Eastern Europe. When you got to the level of the factory floor and much of the working class, kind of everyone got paid the same. And it kind of didn’t matter if you worked hard or didn’t work hard, and there was a lot of resentment. Workers that did work hard, were motivated, were definitely pissed that this person over there was having a cigarette half the day and nothing happens. And then it was difficult to fire somebody and even discipline them, because ideologically, this was supposed to be a worker’s state and all the rest. And one of the reasons that is because the bureaucrats, especially, to maintain their own positions of power, didn’t want to piss off sections of the working class. And a lot of them believed in this theory too, that you pay everyone the same because that’s the socialist ideal. Except it’s not.

There’s absolutely no reason under socialism why everyone should get paid the same. And in fact, they didn’t. In the Soviet Union, the artists got paid more, filmmakers got paid more, the party leaderships got paid more. It’s not like everyone got paid the same, it was mostly in the working class you didn’t have hardly any variance. But there’s no reason why that needs to be.

If we go back to what Karl Marx said, socialism is not the same – and there’s so much misconception of what communism is because of the Cold War and all the rest. But if you take what Marx and Engels thought communism was, communism is when the state withers away and isn’t there anymore because there’s no classes anymore, because the whole point of the state is to be coercive.

And if you don’t have distinctions in classes, you don’t need cops, you don’t need armies. So communism is this ideal kind of utopia. Who knows if human society ever gets there, but that’s the theory. It got all demonized because they called the Soviet Union communism because the Soviet Union sometimes called themselves that, but it wasn’t.
So under communism, the tagline is, “From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.” Because this ideal state, where there’s no classes, everyone is highly motivated, but not everyone is equal in ability. Some people run fast, some people run slow, some people are smarter, some people can do this and that. So everyone gives what they have to give, but everyone gets what they need. That’s this utopian state of communism, and that was the ideal. But socialism, the slogan was, the tagline from Marx was,

“From each according to their ability, to each according to their work.” You don’t work, you don’t get. So that was not what was followed. This idea of having the same wage did demotivate people.

In Cuba people became so educated, they didn’t want to do agricultural work. They didn’t want to go work in the fields because people were learning sciences and medicine. And in those areas, Cuba excelled. They have a pharmaceutical industry in Cuba that competes at a world level. Though when it came to when you have such an educated population, a lot of people didn’t want to do that kind of work.

But it also was the same thing, with everyone kind of getting paid the same, and they were resentful about that. People said, ‘Well, why should I work hard when they don’t?’ But there’s no reason for that. This isn’t something inherent in socialism. You can have competition between workers, you can pay people more for more productivity. This is not a state where you get what you need, it’s an economy where you get how you work.

Moreover, even capitalist countries somehow faced some similar challenges when it came to social security. There are some people who were satisfied just sitting at home drinking, producing children and collecting social security for each child and didn’t want to work. It seems, regardless of the social and economic system, this is the side effect of providing social security beyond a certain optimal level.

Socialism is not promoting laziness, it does not say that you can live off other people’s work while sitting at home collecting welfare. You will not get paid if you do not work. People will say that socialism is just giving someone money that they didn’t earn. This is wrong, you still have to work.
So it’s a complicated, long story. Well, comrades, for now we’re going to have to leave it here.

Zambia Direct Democracy Movement to Work with UPND to support HH for 2021 Elections

Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) has pledged to support and work with the United Party for National Development (UPND) ahead of the 2021 general elections in order to reclaim Zambia’s lost identity.

And United Party for National Development (UPND) National Trustee, William Banda has welcomed the decision by ZDDM, saying Mr. Kakumbo was an experienced veteran and freedom fighter who understands Zambia’s economic, political, social and cultural problems well.

“I know Mr Kafumbo. He is a freedom fight who can’t be bought. He understands what is happening in this country right now. He wants to see something being done. He wants to see something improving physically and not just mere pronouncements and enticement,” said Banda.

And making the announcement in Lusaka yesterday morning, ZDDM vice president, Charles Kafumbo stated that the only way to take Zambia out of her current economic squabbles was to work with a credible team led by President Hichilema as the country heads towards the 2021 elections.

“Zambians need healing; need hope and need comfort and rediscovery. As we move towards 2021, we need to rediscover ourselves. The continued political violence, economic meltdown and other vices has given Zambians hopelessness. We need to work for ourselves. We need to control our resources. We have gold in my village in Mwinilunga, but look how we are plundering it. We need to take charge of the affairs of our country,” he said.

Mr Kafumbo also visited senior citizen and renowned political activist, Dante Saunders.

Nurse who refused to attend to a Woman in Labour just outside the Clinic Fired

48

The government has dismissed with immediate effect from the civil service a nurse at Kawaya health post in Lukulu district, the Western province for gross negligence.

Public Service Management Division (PSMD) Permanent Secretary, Boniface Chimbwali, has confirmed the development to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS).

Mr Chimbwali explained that Chiimalizeni Tembo, a registered nurse at the center, refused to go and attend to a pregnant woman who ended up delivering by the roadside while the clinic was a few metres away.

“The incident occurred last night when I was on my way to Lukulu district with my entourage on official duties when we found relatives helping a woman to deliver,” Mr Chimbwali explained.

Mr Chimbwali further said that the officer had no excuse not to follow the woman after her husband rushed to the clinic to call on him, adding that the baby has since died 30 minutes after arriving at the district hospital due to asphyxiation.

“To me what Mr Tembo did was gross misconduct which is a dismissible offense, though he has all the rights to defend himself so that the right procedure is followed,” Mr Chimbwali said.

He has since warned civil servants to take their jobs very seriously when rendering services to the people at all times especially when lives are endangered.

And Western Province Permanent Secretary Daniel Bukali has described the incidence as unfortunate considering that the affected family were meters away from the health facility.

“To me, that officer must leave the civil service and I will not allow negligence from workers under my watch, ” Mr Bukali warned.

Allow all pupils to write exams-DEBS warn school authorities

2

School Head Teachers have been warned against chasing pupils with school fees balances from exam rooms.

Ndola District Education Board Secretary (DEBS), Chrispin Chilufya says there is a need for teachers to allow pupils to write exams with or without balances to avoid inconveniences.

Mr Chilufya told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Ndola yesterday, that any teacher who will chase a pupil for failure of paying school fees should be reported for discipline.

Mr Chilufya has since called on all pupils in examination classes to pay attention to the guidelines that will be read to them in preparation for the exams on Monday.

“Reading of exam guidelines is part of the exams as it highlights the dis-advantages of examination malpractice,” Mr Chilufya said.

The Ndola DEBS has also extended a warning to teachers and parents not to support pupils who intend to involve themselves in examination malpractice.

“I want to warn all the teachers, the pupils and the members of the public who tend to be involved in examination malpractices, that we have taken a multi sectoral approach where we have involved other stakeholders like the office of the special division together with the police to help us deal with the perpetrators,” Mr.Chilufya stressed.

He has since called on the pupils to resist the temptation of involving themselves in exam malpractices as teachers have done their part in teaching them even in the crucial times of the COVID19 pandemic.

Zambia committed to continental trade integration-President Lungu

13

President Edgar Lungu has called for the acceleration of the development of modern border infrastructure and port facilities to support the continent’s transition to a Free Trade Area from January 1, 2021.

The Head of State said expediting the implementation of the continental infrastructure programme is necessary for the successful implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. (ACFTA).

“As we proceed with opening of our borders, let us be mindful of the need to ensure that necessary accompanying facilities and procedures are in place to facilitate smooth trade amongst member states,” said President Lungu

President Lungu said this during the 13th Session of the African Union Extra Ordinary Virtual Summit on the operationalization of the ACFTA.

In a speech read on his behalf by Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Christopher Yaluma, President Lungu said Zambia has already shown commitment to continental trade and integration agenda by giving cabinet approval for ratification of the CFTA agreement and was now awaiting parliamentary ratification.

President Lungu said while the continent starts trading as a free trade area on January 1, 2021, there is need to ensure that the Free Trade Area does not disadvantage any country.

“Zambia will support all efforts aimed at ensuring that the Africa Continental Free Trade Area benefits all participating African Union Member States and that no single country is disadvantaged as a result of implementing the trade liberalization reforms,” said President Lungu.

He said Zambia is open for business and investment and is hopeful that she will receive favourable tariff offers from other countries to her tariff offer of 90 % non-sensitive list of products.

He urged African countries to ensure that strategies are put in place that will increase the value of intra-Africa trade and accelerate national economic development and transformation.

President Lungu stressed that Africa needs to identify value chains that can effectively develop within the continent and spur economic growth at all levels.

He paid tribute to African leaders, government officials from all the 55 AU member countries and other stakeholders for the tireless efforts that have seen the realization of the Continental Free Trade Area.

Grabbing Voters’ Cards from Eligible Voters is Undemocratic and a Criminal , UPND tells off PF

UPND National Chairman, Mutale Nalumango says the tendency by known PF elements of grabbing voters’ cards from eligible voters in the 2021 elections is undemocratic and a criminal act.

Speaking on ABN Today Bemba programme yesterday, Ms Nalumango said the trend was unacceptable and called on the police and ECZ to take action.

“Don’t allow anyone to get your voters card. It is criminal and sinful for the PF to be grabbing voters’ cards from registered voters. If you allow them to do that, they are stealing your democratic right to vote,” she said.

Ms Nalumango further added that the staging of the registration process during the rainy farming season had disadvantaged many rural citizens most of whom were farmers and depend on farming for their livelihood.

“We have made a mistake by putting the exercise during the farming period and most farmers are finding it hard to queue for days to acquire voters’ cards when they have to go out and prepare their maize fields. And what has made this situation worse is a situation where PF cadres are grabbing voters’ cards from them as well as chasing them from markets if they don’t have a voters’ card. The best thing that we were supposed to have done in order to protect our people from being inconvenienced is making the process quick,” she said.

The UPND leader said the allocated number of days for the on-going voter registration exercise scheduled to end on 12th December were not enough to capture the targeted 9 million voters as she questioned the closure of most NRC centres in the country which in the process desfranchises would be voters.

She has since appealed to the elections body to increase the number of days for voter registration.

The Government has condemned the immoral habit by some people of posting nude photos on various social media platforms.

Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Godfridah Sumaili has further observed the growing trend of using semi-nude women in advertising products and services, saying it is degrading the country’s values and principles.

Reverend Sumaili says she has been receiving several complaints from members of the public who have appealed to her office to curtail the wicked habit.

She has indicated that the government expects all citizens to conduct themselves and their businesses in line with its national values and principles, which put a premium on morality and ethics, human dignity as well as patriotism.

“Zambia has set for herself through the constitution national values and principles to guide people in the manner they should conduct themselves, whether in private or business setups and Zambia being a Christian nation, has Christian values to be respected,” she charged.

The Minister has noted that influence in society should be about positively imparting the public and not violating people’s rights all in the name of advertising and enjoying one’s rights.

She has since counseled product promoters, social media influencers and sponsors of products and services, among other groups to be mindful of the cultures they operate in.

Rev. Sumaili has urged every Zambian to adhere to the set national values and principles as they conduct their businesses and personal life especially on social media platforms or the law will be applied on them.

“I therefore wish to guide the nation to respect our national, Christian and cultural values and principles on which we anchor our identity and existence. Women and men who are in the habit of indecently exposing themselves to stop or face the wrath of the law,” the Minister warned.

This is contained in a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today, by Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affair, Godfridah Sumaili.
