LaLiga Salutes Barca’s Impact on Zambia U17 Team

0

The impact of Barcelona Academy of Lusaka players in the Zambia U17’s run at the COSAFA U17 Cup in South Africa has impressed Spain’s top flight league organization LaLiga.

Eight players from Lusaka’s Barca Academy prominently featured at the Port Elizabeth tournament held from November 22-19 where Zambian finished second to hosts South Africa.

“As LaLiga, it is great to see our clubs opening academies in Africa at large,” said LaLiga South Africa managing director Marcos Pelegin.

“Even better when those academies produce players that can be enrolled in their national teams and strengthen local and foreigner leagues. What FC Barcelona is doing in Zambia, likewise as Real Betis now in Zimbabwe, are always good news for the football industry in general and those football fraternities in particular.”

In addition, seven out of Zambia’s ten goals at the 2020 COSAFA U17 tournament were scored by Barca Academy players that saw striker Joseph Sabobo Banda take home the Golden Boot with his five goals.

Sabobo’s Baca Academy club mate and Zambia U17 goalkeeper Eric Makungu also won the tournaments Golden Glove Award.
Furthermore, Sabobo is heading for a LaLIga training camp together with COSAFA U17 Player of the Tournament Mduduzi Shabalala of South Africa.

The initiative is part of LaLiga and COSAFA’s strategic technical partnership for both men’s and women’s junior football structures that is entering its second year.

Meanwhile, Zambia lost the COSAFA U17 final to South Africa 4-2 post-match penalty loss after they finished 1-1 at fulltime.

But both Zambia and South Africa have qualified for the Morocco 2021 AFCON U17 after securing the COSAFA zone’s two qualifying slots in Port Elizabeth.

The 2020 COSAFA U17 Cup was used the Southern Zone’s 2021 AFCON U17 qualifier event.

Nigeria’s Access Bank in talks to buy Atlas Mara

6

Access Bank Plc is in talks about a potential acquisition of assets belonging to Atlas Mara Ltd.

Lagos-based Access Bank is interested in Atlas Mara’s businesses in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia, the people familiar with the matter have said asking not to be identified because the matter is private.

Deliberations are in preliminary stages and no final decision has been made, they said.

If successful, Atlas Mara will be left with its largest investment, a 49.97% stake in Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, which gives it a footprint in Africa’s largest economy.

A deal would also mark the second transaction between Atlas Mara and Access Bank after the Nigerian lender agreed to buy its Mozambique unit at the end of September.

Representatives for Atlas Mara and Access Bank declined to comment.

Zambia was listed among the company’s discontinued operations in its first-half earnings report.

Atlas Mara, which has lost 96% of its value since listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2013, is exiting markets or seeking partners in countries where it doesn’t see opportunities to bulk up or make money.

Covid eats into Zambeef’s profits

9

The Zambeef Group posted a loss of K102 million during the financial year ended 30th September 2020 against a profit of K18.5 million in the previous period.

It said the year 2020 was characterised by a difficult operating and economic environment due to adverse macro-economic fundamentals and the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the latest financial statement, Zambeef says the Zambian kwacha weakened by 54% against the US Dollar, resulting in high inflation and reduced customer spending.

The Group also experienced challenges stemming from reduced electricity supply due to continued load shedding, resulting in high diesel generator fuel expenditure and repairs and maintenance costs.

This, coupled with a 49% increase in the electricity tariff at the beginning of the calendar year, significantly increased operational costs and eroded margins.

Revenue and gross profit increased by 24% and 12% due to pricing across most of the divisions despite an increase in input costs.

Finance costs reduced by 15% in USD which can be attributed to the net debt reduction following improved cash generation and Sinazongwe sale proceeds.

The Group ultimately recorded a loss of K102 million during the year compared to a profit of K18.5 million in the previous period.

Despite the strong operating profit performance, profit after tax was impacted by foreign exchange losses, financing costs and the impairment of a deferred tax asset.

The Group says it expects the 2021 financial year to remain challenging, characterised by macro-economic instability.

Despite the challenges noted above, Zambeef posted an operating profit of K10.5 million, a 30.6% growth compared with K161.2 million in 2019.

The Group’s strong underlying performance was driven by growth in the Stockfeed and Cold Chain Food products division.

It says Zambia’s sovereign debt position remains the biggest risk to macroeconomic stability in the short to medium term.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and how it evolves could impact our operations but we anticipate Zambia will acclimate to living with the virus and continue life under the new normal. We believe our business is well positioned to overcome the challenges and continue on the strong performance trajectory owing to our diversified and vertically integrated business operations, great brand portfolio and strong management,” it said.

Commenting on these results, Board Chairman Michael Mundashi said, on the back of a challenging 2019 financial year, 2020 followed suit and proved to be an even tougher year for the Zambeef Group. The 2020 financial year was characterised by difficult economic and market conditions that were exacerbated by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.”

“Despite significant growth in the first half of the financial year, macro-economic headwinds – in particular those associated with the Kwacha depreciation – accumulated in the second half and negatively impacted the bottom line financial performance.”

“The Board believes the key to sustainable growth, while mitigating the effects of economic cycles lies in remaining committed to achieving its strategic priorities. As such, the key focus remains on the core divisions that generate sustainable and strong cash flows, while reducing debt to release cash for reinvestment in higher returning projects.”

“We expect the macro-economic climate to remain challenging in the 2021 financial year, characterised by an increase in volatility. The country’s national debt level remains a threat to macro-economic stability in the short to medium term. We anticipate the COVID-19 pandemic will have minimal impact on our operations in 2021 as Zambia will adjust to living with the virus and resume life under the ‘new normal’.”

Angola wants to link TAZARA to Lobito

20

Plans to build a trans-African railway between the ports of Dar es Salaam in the east of the continent and Lobito in the west have been proposed by Sandri De Oliveira, Angola’s ambassador to Tanzania.

De Oliveira was speaking in Dar at an event to mark the 45th anniversary of Angola’s independence from Portugal.

He said the railway corridor would connect the two countries through Zambia, allowing for the transit of goods from markets in America, Asia and Europe.

The project would involve building a narrow-gauge (1,067mm) railway between Lobito in Angola to the Zambian border.

The line would then be extended through Zambia as far as the central town of Kapiri Mposhi.
This is the western terminus of the Tazara rail line, built by the Chinese in the 1970s.

The ambassador commented: “In order to have the railway link with Tanzania, the Angolan government would construct a new railway line into Zambia that would further link to the 1,860 km Tanzania–Zambia Railway.”

He added that Angola was counting on “Tanzania’s collaboration in this effort”.

At present, Angola’s economy depends overwhelmingly on exports to China – in 2018 these accounted for more than $25bn, more than its exports to the rest of the world combined, and consisted mainly of oil.

There is almost no trade between Angola and Tanzania.

In 2015, Tanzania exported less than $5m to Angola, and Angola less than $500,000 worth of goods to Tanzania.

The lack of commercial contact is partly due to the difficulties in overland transport by road, especially in Zambia, during the rainy season.

A rail link would provide each country with access to each other’s markets, as well as improved access to global buyers.

Angola, which has a per capita income around three times greater than Tanzania and more than double that of Zambia, would be likely to shoulder most of the work in organising the link.

National Democratic Congress clarifies Kambwili’s statement

13

By Saboi Imboela Spokesperson- NDC

The National Democratic Congress, NDC, is shocked with continued statements from the PF over a statement made by our NDC president Dr. Chishimba Kambwili.

Last week, Dr. Kambwili shared how disappointed he was with Zambians keeping quiet in the midst of human rights abuse and harassment of citizens. Dr. Kambwili shared how he expected people to stand up for their country and not let politicians be the only ones to speak and stand up in defence of Zambia’s democratization process.

To our shock, the PF have twisted the statement to mean that our president regrets the way he has been providing checks and balances to the PF. There is nothing wrong with the way our president provides checks and balances, and to twist that statement to make it sound like his kind of politics are not good is a serious case of desperation on the part of the PF.
Our president is one of the strongest voices for Zambians in the country and he will continue to provide the required checks and balances.

Politicians have their role to play, just as much as citizens have their role to play in our country’s good governance. The call by our president to remind people to play their role of good citizenship does not in any way mean that he regrets or is giving up on opposition politics which require him to be a voice of the voiceless.

One of the tenets of good governance is that of participation. Participation requires that all citizens get involved in issues that affect them. Voting alone is not enough because citizens have to continuously ensure that their elected representatives govern in an acceptable and prudent manner.

It is also said that Democracy is not a Spectator’s sport. This simply means that, citizens are not spectators but active players in their democracy or democratisation process of their country, as the case is in Zambia now.

The above message of citizen participation is what our president was emphasising on and the PF desperation to make that statement be about them and their president is a serious act of desperation. Why would our president regret having brought out some of the serious cases of corruption that this country has ever seen?

We urge the PF to concentrate on real issues affecting the country than to keep twisting statements from various political players.

‘I can never give up on Zambians. We have a big task ahead of us. We may sometimes feel weary as leaders, but the task we have at hand is not anything that I or we as NDC can give up along the way. We need to liberate this country and it takes concerted efforts to do so. For my part as president of NDC, I can never give up on the mission to liberate Zambia,’ president Kambwili said.

HH Demands for the Extension of Voter registration, says PF already Rigging Elections

38

United Party For National development (UPND) Leader Hakainde Hichilema has demanded for the immediate extension of the on-going voter registration exercise until all eligible Zambians are captured.

Addressing a press briefing at the UPND secretariat this morning, Mr Hichilema also called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to deploy extra man power and kits to polling stations across the country in order to avoid disfranchising eligible voters.

“Extend the voter registration not by a month, not by two months but until all the eligible voters are registered. After all, the Electoral Act of 2016 is clear that there must be a continuous voter registration exercise. Even the 30 days was against the law,” he demanded.

He said the Department for National Registration and Passports’ failure to issue NRC to eligible Zambians coupled with the failure by ECZ to issue voters’ cards to eligible citizens was a PF ploy to rig the 2021 elections.

“The PF is sabotaging the 2021 elections by issuing NRCs to people in selected provinces and this is undoubtedly a rigging scheme. Rigging elections is not only done during voting day, the way the PF is disadvantaging deserving Zambians from acquiring NRCs is rigging. We don’t want to be duped this way,” he added.

Wondering the elections body has been adamant on its refusal to extend the voter registration exercise, the opposition leader said the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was mandated by the Electoral Act of 2016 to conduct continuous voter registration.

He also accused ECZ Chairperson, Esau Chulu of failing to implement the pledge that he made during the President’s Summit that the Commission would be conducting the exercise in all the 9, 000 polling and that they would be capturing 33 people per day as a way of capturing the targeted 8.5 million to 9 million voters.

He has since appealed to the Government to immediately release the resources needed to extend the exercise.

“Those who are controlling public resources must release those resources to the ECZ so that they can register more voters. The owners of the resources are saying, ‘take our resources to all the 10 provinces so that we can acquire NRCs and voters cards,” he said.

That result also ends Zesco two-match winless run in which they drew at home with Buffaloes ad lost 3-1 away at Zanaco.

Green Eagles who are on CAF Confederation Cup duty now drop to third on 10 points while Buffaloes and Dynamos complete the top five on 9 points.

Over 500 illegal miners Loot undisclosed quantities of Gold at Kasenseli gold mine

19

Over 500 illegal miners have broken into the perimeter wire fence and forced their way into the mining area at Kasenseli gold mine in Mwinilunga district looting undisclosed quantities of alluvial Gold.

The illegal miners are reported to have come from a camp in the nearby bush called Kabanda B nicknamed after Kabanda Township in Mwinilunga district.

District commissioner Arnot Mapulanga confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mwinilunga today after he visited the area.

Mr Mapulanga observed that the illegal miners found it easy to gain entry into the mine area by simply unscrewing the joints in the wire fence.

He called on the contractor erecting the fence to reconsider the design by welding the joints as opposed to using bolts and nuts and also advised the contractor to immediately repair the fence to avoid a reoccurrence.

The district commissioner warned that government will not sit idle and allow criminality to continue at the Gold mine adding that stern action will be taken against anyone found wanting.

He said the gold at Kasenseli is a national resource from which social amenities such as roads, hospitals and schools can be built to benefit majority citizens as opposed to a few selfish individuals.

Meanwhile, Panorama security Manager Operations, William Mwale called for reinforcement of man power and crowd dispersing tools such as tear smoke and dog handlers from state police.

He said the illegal miners seem to be aware that police are not allowed to shoot at them hence they take advantage of this and fearlessly charge towards them.

When contacted for details of the incident, Northwestern province Commissioner of Police Elias Chushi promised to issue a statement later.

Two weeks ago, illegal miners attempted to dismantle the wire fence to try and gain access to the mine site.

Justice Minister concerned about the low number of local courts in Sesheke District

11

Justice Minister Given Lubinda is concerned about the low number of local courts in Sesheke District of Western Province.

Sesheke District has nine wards of which only three wards have local courts.

Mr Lubinda disclosed the shortage of local courts to ZANIS shortly after touring Sesheke Subordinate Court, Katongo and Katima Mulilo Local Courts infrastructures.

Earlier, the Minister also expressed concern on the state of the Registry Office at Sesheke Subordinate court which was gutted by fire in November 2013.

Mr Lubinda was dismayed at the dilapidated state of the roof at Sesheke Subordinate court which he described as a danger to human life.

The Minister has since urged the Judiciary to take keen interest in rehabilitating the building before it causes harm to members of staff.

Mr Lubinda also called on Sesheke area Member of Parliament to utilize some of the constituency development fund (CDF) to build local court infrastructures in the district.

The United Nations Votes To Decriminalize Cannabis And Cannabis Resin

4

By Peter Sinkamba

Today, Wednesday the 2nd of December, 2020, the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) accepted a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation to remove cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.

The historic vote in Vienna will have far-reaching implications for the global medical cannabis industry, ranging from regulatory oversight to scientific research into the plant and its use as a medicine.

The eagerly awaited approval of Recommendation 5.1 had a slim majority in favour with 27 votes for, one abstention and 25 votes against The CND – the main drug policymaking body within the United Nations – turned down all five remaining recommendations.

The passage of Recommendation 5.1 carries broad symbolic significance for medical cannabis, as it could help boost medical cannabis legalization efforts around the globe now that the CND tacitly acknowledges the medical utility of the drug.

As the Green Party, and the Zambian Hemp Growers and Industries Association, we wholeheartedly welcome the result of the vote, and are hopeful that with this development, industrialisation of African countries through industrial and medical cannabis will be a reality.

Zambia religiously follows the UN scheduling in our legislation. Consequently, the country has considerably lagged behind to jump on to the marijuana groovy train. This development will definitely remove obstacles to use cannabis for industrial, medical and research purposes.

The vote will encourage us to reevaluate how cannabis is classified on our national lists of narcotic drugs, paving the way for more investments and research into medical and industrial marijuana and its various uses.

While the move does not totally free cannabis from treaty control, it is a giant step toward the normalization of cannabis in medicine and industrial uses.

Decades of efforts have been necessary to remove cannabis from Schedule IV.

Drugs in Schedule IV of the 1961 treaty – where, until today, cannabis sat alongside heroin – are a subset of those already in Schedule I.

Schedule I – which includes fentanyl – already requires the highest levels of international control.

The schedules of the international drug-control conventions categorize drugs considering their medical utility versus the possible harm they could cause.

Only the 53 current member states of the CND had an opportunity to vote, but this decision applies to all signatories of the international drug control conventions.

Zambia ranked number 6 COVID-19 safe in the world

12

Zambia has been named by a tourism travelogue as one the best six safeties tourism destination in the world.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Technical Services Kennedy Malama said this was due to consistency in the coordination of the multi sector approach towards COVID-19 response, which the country has put in place.

‘’We are nevertheless still at risk of getting the risk of cases considering the global setup of free movements exacerbated by the cold weather that come with the rain season,” he noted

He noted that as the festive period commences, families are expected to increase movement which will bring a high risk of contracting COVID-19.

He also observed that the Ministry has noted with concern some of the learning institutions that are not adhering to the COVID-19 public health measures.

“As a Ministry we have noted that most of the boarding schools are not observing and adhering to masking up, washing hands and social distancing COVID-19 rules,” Dr Malama noted.

Dr Malama appealed to parents to continue encouraging the leaners to continue with masking up and washing hands and maintaining social distance in school.

He said the Ministry of Health will continue to working with the Ministry of Education with surveillance of testing in indoor to protect the lives of leaners in school.

Dr Malama further announced that since schools opened, 138 COVID-19 cases among leaners have been recorded from 20 districts.

“Let me assure the parents that our pupils are safe in schools and the Ministry will continue to work with ministry of Education so that together we can protect the lives of the learners,” he said.

Meanwhile Zambia has recorded 165 COVID-19 cases with 331 recoveries while in the last 24 hours 35 new cases have been recorded out of 5,412 test conducted in the last 24 hours.

He said the cases were detected from Chongwe with 2 cases, Lusaka 16, Mufurilia 2, Ndola 2 and Livingstone with 12 cases bring the culmulative number of cases to 17, 700.

Mr. Sinyangwe stated that the Authority has no intention of buying the Hotel as proposed.

He said this position has since been communicated to Harberton Ltd, the owners of the property.

The Authority therefore has urged the public to dismiss the false assertions made in a report carried by News Diggers with a headline; “NAPSA goes Ahead to buy Chrismar Hotel”.

Dr.Guy Scott is being used by the Cartel to discredit President Lungu-Kamba

50

PF Lusaka province Secretary Kennedy Kamba says former Republican Vice President Dr.Guy Scott is being used by the Cartel to discredit President Lungu.

In a statement made available to Smart Eagles in Lusaka, Mr.Kamba said Says the PF is very disappointed that Dr. Guy Scott is being used to scandalise President Edgar Lungu by attempting to drag the government and the ruling party in matters relating to voter registration which is a sole responsibility of the Electoral Commission of Zambian (ECZ).

Mr. Kamba said the PF, sympathises with the ailing Dr. Guy Scott and wish him a speedy recovery and good health.

” As a party, we believe that the ECZ is actually doing its level best to ensure that as many citizens as possible register to vote in the forthcoming general elections. We are confident that the commission will attain its target of nine million voters,” Mr. Kamba.
” What is required is for all stakeholders, especially political parties, politicians, civil society leaders and indeed the Church to get on board to encourage citizens to go and vote,” He said.

Mr. Kamba said Dr.Guy Scott should stop being used to drag the government of President Edgar Lungu in the issue of voter registration.
” We know that Guy Scott does not like President Lungu and he still cannot face reality that Dr.Edgar Lungu is Republican President and he fought him so much following the demise of President Michael Sata,” Mr. Kamba.

He said Dr. Guy Scott has been a member of the cartel that still want to bring confusion in the leadership of the PF and consequently the government.

” We advise Dr Scott to stay away from bad people that are misleading him and concentrate on his medication and getting enough rest so that he can recover quickly because we want to see him in good health,” Mr.Kamba.

“These kinds of conspiracies to try and use him to insult and embarrass the Presidency or indeed the ruling PF will not take them anywhere. You cannot drag President Lungu into the ECZ matters, considering the fact that it is an autonomous body,” Mr.Kamba adds
