In Memory Of The Late Levy Mwanawasa, SC 2nd Mmd President And 3rd Republican President

18

By Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba President, MMD

19th August 2020

On behalf of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, we cherish the memories of our 2nd MMD President, His Excellency Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, SC.

Today, memories of the most progressive President of Zambia fill our minds as we remember and celebrate the life of one of Zambia’s best sons and leaders.

He demonstrated that Zambians under a responsible government can respect the law.

He demonstrated that with fiscal discipline you can get the nation out of debt and unleash the nation to unfettered prosperity.

He demonstrated that with a relentless fight against corruption, a nation can restore its international respect and dignity.

He demonstrated that leadership is about service and not personal deals and profit.
It is no wonder that President Mwanawasa has gone down in history as the man whose name graces more infrastructure than many other Presidents.

The message from the grave today is that, Corruption MUST be punished wherever it rears its head.

The Message from the grave today is that, the respect of the rule of law by both leaders and citizens is the source of all human development.

The late Levy Mwanawasa will be remembered as the President who brought back economic and social stability to Zambia.

The MMD prides itself with the fact that under the leadership of President Mwanawasa, the Zambian economy grew and was rated amongst ten fastest growing economies in the world.

The late President has proved that with a steady, incorruptible and focused leadership, Zambia can rise and become the example of success on the Continent.

Give Zambia a good President and you shall see how progressive Zambians can be.

Continue to Rest In God’s Peace, Mr President.

President Edgar Lungu wishes Vice President Inonge Wina Quick Recovery from COVID-19

37

President Edgar Lungu has wished the Vice President Mrs. Inonge Wina quick recovery after she tested positive for COVID-19.

This is according to a media statement released by Statehouse confirming that the Vice President has tested positive for COVID-19

“Your Honour the Vice President, I am hopeful that the Almighty God will be with you, your family, and other people in isolation as you fight this ailment. Getwell soon,” the President said.

According to the statement, the Vice President on Tuesday tested positive for COVID-19 following a positive result of her daughter with whom she stays with.

The Ministry of Health sent a team of experts to evaluate her. She underwent a comprehensive medical assessment that included history taking, clinical examination, radiological and laboratory testing. The Clinical Care team then recommended that she be managed under home isolation under the community model with intensive and clinical and nursing monitoring.

According to the statement from Statehouse, the Vice President has some mild symptoms that are being managed appropriately and her condition is stable.

The statement concluded by saying that Mrs. Wina is in high spirits and working virtually under the new normal and looks forward to returning to the office after recovery and will continue to advocate for a covid-free Zambia.

Farmers are Free to sell their Maize to Anyone-Agriculture Minister

9

Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo has said that the government is not forcing farmers to sell their maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

Mr. Katambo said that FRA is in the market to buy maize just like any other player, and farmers have a choice of where to sell their crops in a liberalized market system.

Speaking when he visited some FRA satellite depots in Mansa and Samfya Districts in Luapula Province, Mr. Katambo explained that the government is merely urging farmers to be patriotic and sell their maize to FRA for the country’s strategic food reserves.

He said so far, most farmers who have solid their maize to FRA are happy with the price and promptness the agency is paying, which is unprecedented, as it has never happened before.

And FRA Luapula Province Marketing Coordinator Limbikani M’hango has expressed hope that the agency will meet the target of buying 1-hundred and 30 thousand metric tons of maize in Luapula.

PEIF National Coordinator in arrives in Mongu Aboard Zambia Air force Plane

18

The Presidential Empowerment Initiative Fund (PEIF) has arrived in Western Province to a thunderous welcome on a tour of duty to facilitate various empowerment initiatives aboard a Zambia Air Force Plane.

PEIF National Coordinator Mr Clement Tembo is leading the team to distribute empowerment initiatives which include block making machines, ploughs, egg incubators, revolving funds, startup capital, second-hand bales of clothes among others.

Mr Tembo was welcomed upon arrival by party officials and immediately proceeded to pay a courtesy call on the Provincial Sermanent Secretary Mr Daniel Bukali who welcomed him to the province.

Mr Bukali informed Mr Tembo that the province has been longing to be part of the empowerment initiative which has transformed the lives of many people across the country and further thanked President Lungu for being inclusive with empowerment initiatives regardless of regions or political affiliations.

He thanked Mr Tembo for his tireless effort in ensuring that people are empowered in various parts of the country with life-changing opportunities which will equally delight the people of Western Province.

And Mr Tembo has handed over empowerment parkages to Mongu residents with as assurance to them that President Edgar Lungu is committed to improving their welfare.

Mr Tembo who is in Western Province for an empowerment tour, handed over ploughs, bales of second-hand clothes, fishing nets, brick making machines for youth empowerment and financial assistance to taxi drivers and marketeers.

Mr Tembo reminded the recipients that the Head of State having come from a very humble background ably understands the plight of marketers and other vulnerable individuals and what kind of challenges they face in sustaining homes and educating their children.

He further urged the beneficiaries to ignore critics who want to belittle what the empowerment initiative seeks to achieve as he emphasized the need to detach politics and tribalism when it comes to bettering people’s lives.

“I know our critics will belittle what we are doing but if you are a patriotic Zambia, you will support what President Edgar Lungu is doing because he understands what people like marketers go through on a daily basis” Mr Tembo said.

And Mr Tembo took advantage of the occasion to preach against tribal politics and urged the people to ensure that they support initiatives that mean well and ignore leaders that are spreading falsehoods.

Jacob Banda Adjusting to Zesco Second Choice Role

2

Zesco United star goalkeeper Jacob Banda appears calm despite losing his status as first choice keeper at the Ndola side.

Kenyan goalkeeper Ian Otieno has in recent matches established himself as the number one keeper at Zesco after switching from Red Arrows earlier this year.

Banda, 31, has been a common feature in the Zesco goal post for 15 years.

In an interview, Banda hailed the performance of his successor.

“I have done my part and the guy who has taken over has also done his part,” Banda said.

“He (Otieno) is doing very well, I congratulate him. I think he is a good replacement.”

“He should continue working hard and win something for the team as well,” Banda said.

When asked if he hopes to bounce back as Zesco number one, Banda responded:”It is by the grace of God, when God allows it I will appreciate it.”

Banda is a legend at Zesco with eight Super Division titles to his name.

Last year, he became the first goalkeeper to win eight Super Division league titles with a single club since Zesco collected their first in 2007.

City of Lusaka Poach Kabwe Warriors GM

0

City of Lusaka have appointed South African national Justin Palmer as club General Manager.

Club Secretary Chomba Mumba unveiled Palmer to the media during a ceremony at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka on Wednesday morning.

Parmer, the former Kabwe Warriors General Manager, has been tasked to revive the fortunes of the FAZ Lusaka Province Division 1 side.

“Mr. Palmer’s mandate from the board of City of Lusaka is to achieve footballing success while remaining financially sustainable. The club has emphasised a focus on professionalism and youth development,” Chomba said.

Palmer said he is excited to join former Super Division club Ya Moto.

“We have everything that it takes to complete at the top table of Zambian football, as a club we must adjust to our mentality. With Woodlands Stadium and the financial model in place we must think of trophies and titles as objectives, not dreams,” he said.

Veteran Striker Sets Bold Target for Promoted Indeni

0

Striker Graven Chitalu is targeting to win the FAZ Super Division golden boot when he leads his promoted side Indeni in the top league next season.

Chitalu, 37, scored seven goals in the ended National Division 1 season to help Indeni secure promotion back to the Super Division after a six-year hiatus.

He grabbed a brace on the final day of the season when Indeni thumped Zesco Malaiti Rangers 2-0 in Ndola to finish top of the 18-team league.

Chitalu was a regular scorer in the Super Division when playing for Power Dynamos, Konkola Blades and Roan United between 2008 and 2014.

“We are thanking God for this promotion; we looked forward to winning promotion to the Super Division. I also thank my fellow players, coaches and the executive,” he said from his Ndola base.

“I am working at scoring more goals in the Super Division. I want to be the top scorer,” Chitalu said.

He once played for Mozambique’s Ferroviario Maputo between 2014 and 2016.

High Court nullifies UNZALARU dissolution

17

The Lusaka High Court has nullified the decision of the Labour Commissioner to terminate the Recognition Agreement between the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union and the school Management.

The Court has also directed UNZA Management to forthwith comply with the provisions of the Recognition Agreement.

It has further ordered the losing parties to meet the legal costs incurred by the Union in prosecuting the matter.

This was in a case in which the Union had sued the Attorney General, in a representative capacity for the Labour Commissioner, and the University of Zambia Council.

UNZALARU General Secretary Kelvin Mambwe says in effect, the Court’s judgement means that the Union will revert to the pre-existing status quo, where it remains the legally recognized bargaining entity for University Lecturers and Researchers.

In a statement, Dr Mambwe says this is an important victory of which the Union is proud of without reservation or any feeling of conceit.

“I can’t withhold the excitement I have for winning the case against the abolishment of UNZALARU in the Lusaka High Court. It is gratifying to know that we still have decent judges in our judicial system,” Dr Mambwe said.

ACC Acting Director General must be cited for contempt of Court – YALI

38

The institutional autonomy of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) must not be confused with institutional omni-righteousness so as to insulate them from any fair criticism by anybody, including the Head of State, says Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

During a media briefing this morning addressed by YALI President Andrew Ntewewe this morning, the organisation agreed with President Lungu that selective crusade against corruption focused on President Lungu’s lieutenants is targeted at the President himself and his ability to hold the PF together ahead of 2021 elections and in good light with the voting public.

“The President would have been putting his head in the sand if he failed to point out that the anticorruption focus on his appointees is deliberately meant to create and achieve a narrative that he himself is surrounded by and runs a corrupt administration, which the Zambian people must resent next year,” says Mr Ntewewe.

Mr Ntewewe cited the example of the case of Dr. Chitalu Chilufya where he said the ACC has violated its own law which require that witnesses who testify are protected against disciplinary proceedings.

“In the case of Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, the Anti-Corruption Commission has, in disregard of ongoing court proceedings and legal protection accorded to any witness who testify in court, suspended a State witness who testified in a manner the Acting Director-General and her Commission did not approve of. The question is why,” he said.

YALI has since called on the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Court to cite the Acting Director General for contempt of court and asked the Law Association of Zambia to discipline the Acting Director General for professional misconduct.

Mr Ntewewe also cited incidences when former Minister Chishimba Kambwili, Minister Chitotela, and Secretary to Cabinet Simon Miti, among other persons wo are the inner circle to the President, had been targets for corruption allegations in the recent past.

“We all know how much Chishimba Kambwili was said to have been corrupt while he served in President Lungu’s administration. Due to public pressure and perception created, President Lungu had no option but to relieve Mr. Kambwili of his ministerial position,” noted Ntewewe.

He said that now that Dr. Kambwili has moved to the other political side and singing the anticorruption song against his former colleagues in Government, he is no longer being seen in the same light as the man who was said to be corrupt.

“Suddenly, Mr. Kambwili is slowly being seen and embraced as a clean man in the eyes of his former accusers,” he said.

Yaliy has further said the politics associated with the corruption crusade has now been reduced to is trivialize what infrastructure agenda and the leadership being provided by President Lungu.

“It is now common knowledge that whenever President Lungu’s administration initiates any developmental project such as good roads for our people to move on, or construction of health posts so our people can have easy access to health facilities, or procurement of various services which are meant to support the welfare of Zambians, there is always a counter narrative created by those opposed to Government and his party, decrying corruption as one of the political tactics. The ultimate aim of putting this corruption tag on those appointed and entrusted by President to help him discharge executive functions is to discredit the President and the infrastructure agenda. As the YALI, we reiterate that Zambia cannot dilute the anti-corruption crusade to mere partisan politics,” said Ntewewe.

PF adopts Ex LAZ President George Chisanga for Lukashya Constituency by election

15

The Ruling Patriotic Front (PF) has adopted former Law Association of Zambia President, George Chisanga as its parliamentary candidate for Lukashya Constituency in Kasama district, Northern Province.

PF Secretary GeneralDavies Mwila announced the development.

He also said the Central Committee has also adopted Mr. Kabaso Kampampi as its parliamentary candidate for Mwansabombwe Constituency in Luapula Province.

The seats fell vacant following the demise of area members of Parliament, Hon. Rodgers Mwewa(Mwansabombwe) and Hon. Mwenya Munkonge(Lukashya).

Below is the full statement by Mr. Davies Mwila.

STATEMENT BY PATRIOTIC FRONT SECRETARY GENERAL, HON. DAVIES MWILA, ON THE RESOLUTIONS OF CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, 18TH AUGUST 2020, LUSAKA

Members of the Central Committee

Party Officials

Members of the Press

Yesterday, Tuesday, 18th August 2020, the Central Committee of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) held a meeting which was chaired by His Excellency, President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

The meeting of the Central Committee was held under strict adherence to the Public Health Regulations and Guidelines concerning COVID-19, which included; masking up, frequent handwashing and hand sanitizing, as well as observing social distancing.

Members of the Press, allow me to communicate the following major decisions taken and issues discussed, by the PF Central Committee on Tuesday, 18th August, 2020:

1. ALL PARTY STRUCTURES, MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL CITIZENRY, SHOULD CONTINUE TO ACTIVELY PROMOTE STRICT ADHERENCE TO COVID-19 GUIDELINES.

The Central Committee was very concerned by the increasing levels of complacency, indifference and misinformation concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, this had led to increasing numbers of COVID-19 infections and related deaths in our own communities countrywide. Based on global and local scientific evidence and facts, COVID-19 remains highly infectious, can be fatal, and is still with us.

The Central Committee believes that the country still has a window of opportunity to avoid a COVID-19 carnage by ensuring individual and collective responsibility, through strict adherence to stipulated guidelines and regulations. For this reason, the Central Committee is calling on all party members and citizens in general, to actively promote strict adherence to COVID-19 preventative measures, and the penalties of not adhering to COVID-19 preventative guidelines and regulations.

2. INVOLVEMENT OF ALL STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING POLITICAL PARTIES, IN NRC REGISTRATION PROCESS:

The ruling Patriotic Front is informed by “a people-driven governance” philosophy as a means of accelerating and delivering national development, which reflects both the will and aspirations of the Zambian people.

This is the reason why the PF attaches great importance to all efforts aimed at enhancing and expediting popular participation of all citizens in the governance process. However, this is not exclusively PF’s responsibility, but the responsibility of all stakeholders, including political parties.

For this reason, the Central Committee of the PF has called on the active involvement of all stakeholders, including political parties such as Patriotic Front, in National Registration Card (NRC) registration process.

The PF believes that by doing so, Zambia’s democracy will be deepened and strengthened.

3. ADOPTIONS FOR THE UPCOMING PARLIAMENTARY BY-ELECTIONS IN LUKASHYA AND MWANSABOMBWE CONSTITUENCIES IN NORTHERN AND LUAPULA PROVINCES:

Following the untimely and tragic passing of our late Comrades, namely; Hon Rodgers Mwewa and Hon Mwenya Munkonge, the Mwansabombwe and Lukashya seats fell vacant.

In view of this, the Central Committee of the ruling Patriotic Front has adopted the following:

i. For Mwansabombwe Constituency: The adopted candidate is Kabaso Kampampi.

ii. For Lukashya Constituency: The adopted candidate is Mr. George Chisanga.

Our promise to our late comrades in Mwansabombwe and Lukashya Constituencies, namely late Hon. Rodgers Mwewa and late Hon Mwenya Munkonge, was that we shall shall carry on the good work which they started.

Building on the good works of our departed comrades, the PF is certain to win both seats because the people shall choose people-centred development, peace, love and national unity, which only the Patriotic Front under His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, continue to offer. On the other hand, our people in Lukashya and Mwansabombwe constituencies will choose to rise above and reject the alternative being offered by the Opposition, namely: bitterness, falsehoods and tribalism!

The Central Committee further reiterated that; as political parties start to mobilize for these future by-elections, the focus should be on development-focused (issue-based) campaigns, totally free from all forms of violence. The Central Committee reaffirmed its position that it will not shield any form of criminality. Therefore, the Central Committee is calling on all members of the Party to embrace peace, maximum restraint and exemplary behavior.

4. PATRIOTIC FRONT – ZAMBIA’S OASIS OF PEACE, INCLUSIVENESS, DEMOCRACY AND A PEOPLE-DRIVEN TRANSFORMATIVE DEVELOPMENT AGENDA.

As you may already be aware;

“The Vision of the Patriotic Front is to make Zambia more industrious, prosperous, peaceful, stable, united, democratic, and inclusive society, under the motto of One Zambia, One Nation”.

In this regard, the Central Committee of the Patriotic Front emphasized that:
Peace, Stability, Unity and Democracy form our foundation and pillar as a Party. For this reason, the Patriotic Front has zero tolerance to all forms of violent conduct and speech.

Based on this, the Central Committee has encouraged all Party Structures and members, to continue working towards enhancing good governance and promoting a stable political environment because, these are vital to achieving development – without leaving anyone behind.

As I conclude, allow me leave you with the words of our Republic President, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, which he said during his inauguration speech on Tuesday, 13th September, 2016, at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka:

“Let us hold each other’s hand and move forward together. We can jointly, and whilst holding hands together, climb even the highest mountain without being daunted by its summit”.

Therefore, let this unity of purpose, faith and focus help us to accelerate our individual and collective efforts aimed at making Zambia;

“More industrious, prosperous, peaceful, stable, united, democratic, and inclusive society, under the motto of One Zambia, One Nation”.

Thank you, and God bless you all!

Lusambo’s loyalty to President Lungu unsettles other Ministers-Official

A Senior Member of the ruling PF’s Central Committee has charged that Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo’s unshaken loyalty to President Edgar Lungu has unsettled some cabinet Ministers.

The Member who opted to have his identity withheld for the interview stated that a number of cabinet colleagues are unhappy with Mr Lusambo’s loyalty to President Lungu.

He said Mr Lusambo has always declared his unwavering loyalty for President Lungu which has unsettled some fellow Ministers.

The MCC said there is a cartel around President Lungu bent on fighting everyone defending his leadership.

“What we fear is that if these people who are disloyal to President Lungu have their way, people like Lusambo who are very loyal to His Excellency will be pushed aside so that the President is exposed,” the MCC said.

He added, “ my prayer is that the President can quickly wake up and see which people around him are helping him. What we know is that people like Lusambo are key as we go into the elections because the majority around the President are not helping him at all.”

The Member cited the issue were some cabinet Ministers openly opposed Mr Lusambo’s approach to the fight against Covid-19 only to go and back the same strategy in a cabinet meeting.

“These people don’t mean well for the President. Hon. Lusambo was all out fighting Covid-19 and they were busy disparaging his tactics but now they turn around and start implementing the same strategies in tacking Covid-19. This just confirms what some of us in the Central Committee have always suspected that some people are just fighting the Boss (President Lungu) himself and so they will fight anyone who is helping the Boss.”

He said Mr Lusambo has now been vindicated over the fight against Covid-19.

“The same thing happened during the gassing period, all the activities Hon. Lusambo initiated as Lusaka Province Minister we’re opposed. On the Copperbelt when he served as Minister, there were people fighting him and for me these fights are about his loyalty to President Lungu.”

The Member said it would be prudent for President Lungu to quickly shake up his cabinet saying it would be suicidal to go to an election with this kind of disloyalty people sitting close to the President.

“Most of us in the Central Commiter believe that Hon. Lusambo forms a key pillar to President Lungu because he is the only one able to defend the President and take on his enemies. If we only had even 10 of such Ministers, the President would be well protected,” the Member said.

Vice President Wina tests positive for Covid-19

43

Vice President Inonge Wina has tested positive for Covid-19.

The 80 year old Mrs Wina becomes the latest high profile individual to test positive for Covid-19.

Sources in her office have revealed that the positive test result was availed to her last evening although her condition is said to be stable.

President Edgar Lungu has since ordered that a team of Doctors be sent to her residence to commence treatment than having to put her in a public isolation Centre.

State House fears that due her advanced age, Mrs Wina’s Covid-19 positive status could prove fatal.

Her office has since cancelled her trip to Western Province which she was to undertake from today with no official explanation.

Great coincidences Exist between Christianity and Socialism

15

Dr Fred M’membe

There are thousands more coincidences between Christianity and socialism than between Christianity and capitalism.

Responding probably to different motivations, they both advocate attitudes and behaviours that are quite similar.

There’s great coincidence between Christianity’s objectives and the ones we socialists seek, between the Christian teachings of humility, austerity, selfishness and loving thy neighbour and what we might call the content of a revolutionary’s life and behaviour. For, what is the Socialist Party teaching its members and the Zambian people? To kill? To be selfish? To exploit others? Just the opposite. We are teaching them unwavering commitment to honest, equity, humility and solidarity.

We are telling them that our country right now may be too poor to give our people great material wealth, but it can give them a sense of equity and of human dignity.

We socialists believe that Christ was a revolutionary par excellence. His entire doctrine was devoted to the humble, the poor; his doctrine was devoted to fighting against abuse, injustice and the degradation of human beings.

There’s a lot in common between the spirit and essence of Christ’s teachings and socialism.
And the Bible has very revolutionary content. The teachings of Christ are very revolutionary and completely coincide with our aims as socialists.

That is why we believe and openly say that we socialists are not the only revolutionaries. All those who truly follow Christ’s doctrine and devote themselves to the cause of the humble, the poor; and devote themselves to fighting against injustice, abuse and the degradation of human beings and to helping them liberate themselves are all revolutionaries.

Like we socialists, the Catholic social teaching does advocate the protection of property rights, but only when strongly situated within what is called the universal destination of goods. That is, “Christian tradition has never recognised the right to private property as absolute and untouchable: ‘On the contrary, it has always understood this right within the broader context of the right common to all to use the goods of the whole of creation: the right to private property is subordinated to the right to common use, to the fact that goods are meant for everyone.”
(Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, No. 177, quoting St. John Paul II’s Laborem Exercens). And because God intends the world to provide for the needs of every person, the distribution of resources must allow every human person with what is needed for a full life. Isn’t this what we socialists are advocating for?

In his encyclical “Pacem in Terris,” St. John XXIII explained: “Man has the right to live. He has the right to bodily integrity and to the means necessary for the proper development of life, particularly food, clothing, shelter, medical care, rest, and, finally, the necessary social services. In consequence, he has the right to be looked after in the event of ill health; disability stemming from his work; widowhood; old age; enforced unemployment; or whenever through no fault of his own he is deprived of the means of livelihood” (No. 11). Isn’t this what the Socialist Party’s manifesto is advocating for?

A defense of property, absent that context, functions to absolve those who own property from responsibility to those in desperate need. But Catholic teaching treats the withholding of resources from those in need as a failure of justice, and so private property always comes with a “social mortgage.”

Pope Leo XIII explained in his encyclical “Rerum Novarum”: “[W]hen there is a question of defending the rights of individuals, the poor and badly off have a claim to especial consideration. The richer class have many ways of shielding themselves, and stand less in need of help from the State; whereas the mass of the poor have no resources of their own to fall back upon, and must chiefly depend upon the assistance of the State” (No. 37). Isn’t this what we socialists are seeking?

And what is being advocated by the Catholic social teaching is not consistent with the capitalist social order.

Even on religious liberty, the Catholic social teaching is saying that it must also respect the common good.

As capitalists, with their religious agents, seek to accord special recognition to Christianity or section of it, the “Compendium” says, “Such recognition must in no way create discrimination within the civil or social order for other religious groups” (No. 423). The church’s witness to the Gospel always requires (and Catholics must acknowledge that it often has failed in this) the defense of the well-being of persons who do not accept the Gospel, in keeping with the commands to love both neighbour and enemy. The purpose of the right to religious liberty within Catholic thought is both to make room for the church’s freedom to give witness to the Gospel and also to honour the call of God for every person to freely enter into communion with the divine life. These two purposes are not at odds.
The church’s witness to the Gospel always requires the defense of the well-being of persons who do not accept the Gospel.

The document “Dignitatis Humanae,” promulgated at the Second Vatican Council, explains it thus: “It is…completely in accord with the nature of faith that in matters religious every manner of coercion on the part of men should be excluded. In consequence, the principle of religious freedom makes no small contribution to the creation of an environment in which men can without hindrance be invited to the Christian faith, embrace it of their own free will, and profess it effectively in their whole manner of life” (No. 10).

This makes it important to remember that Catholic teaching says the right to religious liberty “is not of itself an unlimited right. The just limits of the exercise of religious freedom must be determined in each social situation with political prudence, according to the requirements of the common good, and ratified by the civil authority through legal norms consistent with the objective moral order” (No. 422).

And speaking for myself, I can say that the ethical values that are propelling my revolutionary, socialist work came from my Catholic upbringing and education, from my teachers – the Capuchin Fathers, the Irish Christian Brothers and Sacred Heart Brothers. I would even say from my Christian family, home.

I was taught very early in my life that I should not lie. I was taught what was right and wrong, things that should and should not be done. I remember being punished by my Form 1 mathematics teacher at St John’s Secondary School to write 3,000 times, “Oh what a web we weave for ourselves when we first practice to deceive.” I had not done my homework and when asked about it, I lied that I had left it in the dormitory. I was told to go and get it. And immediately after I left classroom, the teacher told the class I was not going to come with any homework. He asked for a bet on it. When I came back empty-handed, the whole class burst into laughter. I have carried these words and memories of that day with me wherever I am and in whatever I do. And I remind my classmates of this incident whenever we meet. That was my baptism out of lying.

Later on, my revolutionary and political involvement began to create in me a feeling of what was wrong, the violation of an ethical standard, an injustice, abuse or fraud. I began to have an idea of what was fair and unfair. I began to have a concept of personal dignity. I think I have always had a sense of justice – from very early on – because of what I saw and experienced.

Undoubtedly, my Catholic upbringing and education influenced me a lot. The Capuchin Fathers, the Irish Christian Brothers and Sacred Heart Brothers inculcated a very strong sense of personal dignity in me, regardless of their political ideas which quite often I didn’t agree with. They valued character, rectitude, honesty, courage and ability to make sacrifices.

The Irish Christian Brothers definitely influenced me with their strict organisation, their discipline and their values. They contributed to my development and sense of justice. Following that path, I came to view abuse, injustice as unacceptable.

If you mix ethical values with a spirit of rebellion and rejection of injustice you begin to appreciate and place a high value on a number of things that other people don’t value at all. A sense of personal dignity, honour and duty form the main foundation that enables people to acquire political consciousness and a revolutionary spirit.

People that have encroached on land reserved for water development will face the full wrath of the law-Minister

16

The Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Jonas Chanda has warned that people that have encroached on land reserved for water development risk facing the full wrath of the law. The Minister sounded the caution when he visited some areas in Ndola of the Copperbelt Province.

In an area called Minsundu where Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company has one of its water treatment plants, it was discovered that unscrupulous people had built illegal structures. This illegality is despite there being a court order that ruled that all those that had obtained plots around the treatment plant vacate the premises.

“We are a country of laws. As His Excellency President Lungu has stated time without number, we shall not condone lawlessness regardless who are the perpetrators. What kind of nation are we becoming if people can fail to respect a court ruling?” wondered the Bwana Mukubwa Constituency Parliamentarian.

Ndola Town Clerk, Wisdom Bwalya informed the Minister that the City Council was doing everything to ensure that people do not illegally allocate themselves land.

And in the Hillcrest area near Peter Singogo, it was discovered that someone had earmarked the area for construction of a filling station and a shopping mall. However, the area is a recharge zone and a tributary for the Kafue River.

“There is no way we can allow contamination of such an important water body for whatever reason. I am directing Department of Water Supply and Sanitation, Water Resources Development, WARMA, ZEMA and Kafubu Water and the Local Authority to see to it that the proposed construction should not take place and measures to that effect be submitted to my office by Friday 21st August,” Dr Chanda said.

“If indeed a title was given for this place, I will work very closely the Minister of Land to ensure that the said title is revoked. There are so many other areas more suitable for that kind of investment,” stated Dr Chanda

With the population growing, the demand for land has been on the rise. However, it important that water development is not endangered.

HH will prioritize job creation and youth empowerment

15

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) Mandevu aspiring candidate Ross Josphat Kasikili says party leader Mr Hakainde Hichilema will prioritize job creation and youth empowerment to mitigate poverty levels in the country once he forms government next year.

Speaking when he addressed the party’s Chaisa Ward 20 leaders in Mandevu constituency this today, Mr Kasikili said as a social worker he will also lobby for better service delivery for the people of Mandevu using various empowerment initiatives available.

“You are the people who keep the party alive on the ground. You know the problems that we have here in Chaisa. We have no running water and we have no flushable toilets. Chainda has no roads, even those that we have are typical shanty roads that run through the doors of people’s homes. People are not able to have food because they do not have jobs,” said Mr Kasikili.

Mr Kasikili emphasized the importance of people from the wards in the growth of the party saying these are directly linked with the voters on the ground.
Mr Kasikili told the party leadership at the ward that they should be proud of belonging to a party that is tribally balanced adding that the party president Mr Hichilema embraces everyone regardless of their tribe, region or ethnic grouping.

“UPND is not a tribal party. It is a party for everyone regardless of one’s tribe. HH has sent us to encourage you our members at ward level that he wants to replace unemployment with jobs; poverty with a good life because here in Mandevu, one of the biggest challenges that we have is unemployment among our youths,” he said.

He said, once elected, Mr Hichilema will prioritise employment and agriculture so that Zambian citizens could live a better life.

“We should go out and preach the message why we need Mr Hichilema. It is because he is the hope for a better future for Zambians. He will sort out the issue of unemployment by creating state-run farms which will in turn create jobs for Zambians. He will concentrate on strengthen agriculture so that we can grow enough food for consumption and export the surplus.

Mr Kasikili told the gathering that with or without him being adopted to contest the Mandevu parliamentary seat on behalf of the party, he will always put the interest of the party and its President Mr Hichilema above self-interest.
