Zambia Police Arrest 3 People for burning to death a gassing Suspect

Police in Chongwe District have arrested three people in connection with the death of Benson Moonga who was burnt to death on suspicion that he was one of the criminals behind chemical spraying.

The suspects were arrested yesterday at 10 00 hours at Malakata Village, Chief Bundabunda of Rufunsa District.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo named the suspects as Headman Malakata whose name is Kelly Mayungo, Edwin Tembo both aged 50 years of Malakata and Museke villages respectively in Chief Bundabunda.

Mrs Katongo said also arrested was George Mayunga aged 33 years of Mwendakuseka village, Chief Bundabunda for the offence murder.

She said investigations in all cases where people have been murdered as a result of mob justice have continued.

In another development, Mrs Katongo said two bodies of victims in an accident which occured on 29th February, 2020 along Lundazi road of eastern province have been retrieved and the victims have been identified as Timothy Banda aged 27 of Lumezi stores who was the driver of the said motor vehicle and Emma Tembo aged 32, a teacher at Lumezi day secondary school.

Mrs Katongo said the total number of bodies recovered is now eight.

The UPND has described Nominated Member of Parliament Raphael Nakachinda as a hungry politician who is struggling to prove his relevance to politics.

Commenting on the accusations by Mr Nakachinda that the UPND proposed for the reintroduction of the position of Deputy Ministers in the Constitution Amendment Bill 10 of 2019, UPND Deputy Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said Mr Nakachinda is a treacherous man who cannot be trusted.

Mr Mweetwa refuted claims by Mr Nakachinda that UPND pushed for the reintroduction of the position of Deputy Minister as they are not in support of Bill 10 in its entirety.

“This is a man that was introduced to Politics by Dr Nevers Mumba because he was his handbag carrier but look at what he did to him, he betrayed Dr Mumba just to earn a living. He is not loyal”, said Mr Mweetwa.

Mr Mweetwa has urged Zambians not to trust Mr Nakachinda because he practices politics of the belly.

Speaking at the PF Media Interactive Forum yesterday, Mr Nakachinda accused the UPND of having proposed for the reintroduction of the position of Deputy Ministers.

“The UPND is on record proposing the reintroduction of Deputy Minister, but today who is signing the loudest saying the country doesn’t need deputy Minister? it’s the UPND”, said Mr Nakachinda.

He claimed that the UPND also demanded for the 50%+1, but wondered what has changed for them to reject this.

“The Siavonga Resolutions were left in the hands of the UPND led by the Lawyer who now wants to contest for MP for some constituency in Lusaka. But all of us as participants appended our signatures on that document because we had all agreed on the resolutions,” he says.

Mr. Nakacinda says it is shocking that the UPND have now turned away and rejecting resolutions that they were party of.

Zambia to receive US$ 389 million from the United States Government for HIV/AIDS Relief

Zambia will receive US$ 389 million from the United States Government through the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR), for the next annual funding cycle which starts in October this year.

This follows the Country Operational Plan (COP 2020) meeting convened by the United States Government through PEPFAR, which was held in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 24th to 28th February 2020.

Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya attended the meeting on behalf of Zambia.

The meeting reviewed key policies, strategies and activities to be undertaken towards the goal of achieving epidemic control of HIV.

Dr Chilufya says the meeting marked yet another Milestone in the Zambian Government’s strengthened collaboration with Cooperating Partners in enhancing provision of quality health care services as close to the family as possible.

“The US Government through PEPFAR is a strategic partner in Zambia’s National HIV response which has been instrumental in accelerating the nation’s progress towards attainment of epidemic control of HIV and AIDS by 2020”, Dr Chilufya said.

He said the new one year bilateral grant agreement with PEPFAR, to be signed after the United States Congressional approval of the COP 2020, will provide the framework for PEPFARS funding of activities in Zambia.

In addition to the US$389 Million, Dr. Chilufya said Zambia will receive additional funds specifically for the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision care programs that will be granted to Zambia for the exceptional performance in the two programs across the region.

“With the approval of COP2020 comes an opportunity and a platform for the United States and Zambia to engage at policy and strategic levels,” Dr. Chilufya says

Dr Chilufya said with this support to President Lungu’s administration, Zambian is poised to achieve epidemic control of HIV.

The Minister of Health paid gratitude to America for being a strategic ally of President Edgar Lungu’s health systems strengthening agenda, and cornerstone of Zambia s aspiration for epidemic control of HIV/AIDS.

Continue Praying for Zambia – Eastern Chiefs urge Nevers

Eastern Province Chiefs have urged New Hope Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) President Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba to continue praying for Zambia.

Dr. Mumba who is currently in Eastern Province with senior party leaders for the Ncwala Ceremony paid a courtesy call on Paramount Chief Mpezeni, Chief Nzamane, Chief Madzimawe, Chief Maguya and Chief Chanje.

Dr. Mumba who is also former Republican Vice President congratulated Chief Mpezeni for the successful hosting of the Ncwala Ceremony.

“On behalf of the New Hope MMD, We would like to congratulate your Royal Highness for the successful organizing of the Ncwala Ceremony which will be hosted tomorrow. You have managed to organize this event against all these threats”, Dr. Mumba said.

Dr. Mumba said that tradition ceremonies bring people together.

“Secondly, We would like to thank You for hosting this event because they bring about unity in the Country. When We come here to celebrate these ceremonies, we remove our political hats and come here as Your Children who are United”, Dr. Mumba said.

Dr. Mumba further said that the MMD wrangles are dead.

“Your Royal Highness We would like to take this opportunity to update you about the status of our Party the MMD. It is in public domain that for the past 3 years, our party was involved in an internal leadership crisis. I would like to report to you that those wrangles died on the 5th of November, 2019. There is only one United MMD and these with Us are our Provincial leadership in Eastern Province. We will return next month for a provincial tour”, Dr. Mumba said.

His Royal Highness Mpezeni thanked Dr. Mumba and the MMD for joining the Ngoni’s in celebrating the Ncwala ceremony.

Whilst Chief Madzimawe said that he was happy that the internal wrangles in the MMD had ended.

“As a Parent, We are always happy to hear that infights and wrangles among our children have been resolved. We are happy to hear that our Children in the MMD have resolved there internal wrangles. Furthermore, We would like to thank You for your continued guidance and prayers to the Nation”, Chief Madzimawe said.

Chief Chanje of the Chewa people advised Dr. Mumba to continue practicing Politics of Morality and Integrity.

“We would like to advise you to continue practicing the politics of morality and integrity. We have seen how politicians tend to mud sling each other. But we are encouraged with the type of politics you practice and we would like to urge you to continue with those politics. Our people are living in fear because of these so called gassings. We would like to take this opportunity to ask You to continue praying for the Nation against these evil acts”, Chief Chenja said.

Dr. Mumba assured the chiefs that he entered politics to change the way it’s done and hence he will continue promoting and practicing Politics of integrity. He further called upon all Zambians to continue praying for the Nation and he will never stop praying for the Nation until Zambia is saved.

Opposition of Bill 10 is a Paid For Regime Change Agenda – Nakacinda

Member of Parliament Raphael Nakacinda says the current meetings being held were some people are opposing the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Bill number 10 of 2019 is a paid for regime change agenda.

Speaking this morning during the Patriotic Front Interactive Forum, Mr. Nakacinda says some organisations, a clique of lawyers and others were pushing a regime change agenda in the name of ‘Constitution’ concerns.

Mr. Nakacinda who is also Select Committee appointed to Scrutinize the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Bill number 10 of 2019 Chairperson, says it is hypocrisy for the opposition and some individual Lawyers like Mr. John Sangwa and Ms. Linda Kasonde to claim that the current amendments proposed are bad and the Bill 10 should be rejected.

“The voices that were fighting the Constitution process in 2016 today have turned around and are telling us the 2016 Constitution is the best. Madam Linda Kasonde who were among those campaigning against the Constitution process in 2016 today she is the one saying the 2016 is the best” he says.

He adds that “today, John Sangwa wants to project himself as the embodiment of the Law in this country just because he went to UK and inherited some accent … and today wants to be an embodiment of the law. What he said in 2016 was that the Constitution was a disaster but today he is telling us that it is the best.”

Mr. Nakacinda says it is not about the Constitution but about a regime change agenda were some individuals have been paid to speak as they are doing today discrediting the current Bill 10.

“The UPND is on record proposing the reintroduction of Deputy Minister, but today who is signing the loudest saying the country doesn’t need deputy Minister? it’s the UPND. They also demanded for the 50%+1, but what has changed for them to reject this.

He adds that the amendments under the Bill 10 are holistic as they were agreed on by all political parties and other stakeholders in the country and should be supported by all progressive Members of Parliament and the general citizenry.

“As Select Committee Chair, I am very confident that when it comes to considering that Bill, there are patriotic MPs both sides; from ruling as well as the opposition be it the MMD, UPND, FDD and Independent that will do Zambia proud”.

And on tribalism, the MMD nominated Member of Parliament says tribalism has no place in the country.

He notes that the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) and its leader, Hakainde Hichilema, have no moral right to lecture Zambians on the vice as they are the ones that hold the tag.

Mr. Nakachinda says there is no way the UPND can stand to condemn tribalism as they are tagged as such especially its leader, Hakainde Hichilema.

The nominated Member of Parliament says if the UPND is to be considered a national party, Hakainde Hichilema should consider stepping down for someone who will be neutral.

“At one rally, the late Munkombwe, MHSRIP, endorsed HH and saying it was time for a Tonga in HH to be President. And Hichilema seemed to be agreeable to it and started what we call in Tonga as kuyabila. HH should have rejected that if he was not in support of the action. HH today has not moral authority to talk about ending the vice because it is in him,” says Mr. Nakacinda.

Asked on internal MMD party matters, Mr. Nakacinda says the Court is yet to make a decision on a matter before it in contestation with the Nevers Mumba camp.

““The matters over MMD have not been exhausted. We have appealed and that appeal is still active in Court. So let him (Nevers Mumba) be patient for the Court to conclude,” he says.

Mr. Nakacinda however says it is arrogance for Nevers Mumba to write to the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Republican President Edgar Lungu questioning his continued stay in Parliament as MMD nominated MP.

He says no one should question the Presidents prerogative as it is only the President who decides who he should work with,” he adds.

“Nevers Mumba is knocking wanting to work with the PF. The good thing is that the Bible says ‘In my father’s house there are many rooms’. Just be honest and say naine ndefwaya ukwingila. You can come we work together,” he notes as the crowd burst into laughter.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nakacinda also asked the Media to help the country by being more professional in reporting especially on the recent happenings of gassing.

“Politicians should not use you with their money for you to be unprofessional or side with the wrongs being peddled. Be professional and bring out the truth so that the country is well informed,” he said.

Zesco United fail to go second

Defending champions Zesco United continued stuttering in the FAZ Super Division as Power Dynamos held them to a 1-1 draw at home in Ndola on Sunday.

This draw at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium came a week after Zesco’s 2-1 loss to Napsa Stars in Lusaka.

With Power dominating play, Zesco went in front when Tafadzwa Rusike scored via a 33rd minute penalty beating keeper Jackson Kakunta who hacked John Makwata in the box.

Seven minutes later, Makwata had a goal ruled out for offside – much to the disappointment of home fans.

Zesco thought they had taken a lead into the break before defender Tony Kazembe poked in the equaliser seconds away from half time.

Kazembe fired in a low shot past Zesco keeper Ian Otieno.

In the last half Power continued enjoying a lion share of possession but failed to score.

Meanwhile, Zesco remain fourth on the table and have 40 points from 22 matches played.

Power stay ninth with 36 points after playing 23 matches.

President Lungu remains eligible to contest 2021 general elections contrary to lawyer John Sangwa assertions

RULLING Patriotic Front PF Media Sunday Chanda has cautioned embattled Lusaka lawyer John Sangwa against hiding under the legal profession to propel an opposition political agenda.

Speaking at the Patriotic Front PF Interactive forum in Lusaka today, Mr Chanda told Mr Sangwa to desist from making political statements disguised as professional opinions.

The PF Media Director said the ruling Patriotic front is resolved when it comes to President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s Candidature for the 2021 general elections.

” We are going to take Mr John Sangwa to the political laundry and wash him clean since he wants to be making daming political statements that are meant to discredit PF and President Edgar Chagwa Lungu,”Mr Chanda said.

Mr Chanda said that all those wishing to question President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s eligibility to contest the 2021 general elections should go to court and seek recourse.

And Mr Chanda said that it is very unfortunate that the same group of people claiming that President Lungu is not eligible to contest the 2021 general election are the ones trying to shoot down the Bill 10.

Pyramids Crush Zanaco in Lopsided Contest

Zanaco’s CAF Confederation Cup semifinal hopes are looking bleak following a 3-0 quarterfinal first leg home loss to Pyramids of Egypt at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

The defeat was also Zanaco’s first in this seasons campaign where h
they have collected four wins and six draws.

Zanaco were second best against a rampant Pyramids who took a comfortable 2-0 half time lead.
Ali Gabr headed in Abdallah Said’s corner in the 18th minute.

Mohamed Farouk then pounced on Zanaco goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata ‘s clearence in the 24th minute.

Rodgers Kola’ s 38th minute tame shot saved by Pyramids goalkeeper Mahdi Hamada was the highlight of Zanaco’s show in that period.

Pyramids put the result beyond doubt in the 68th minute when Said got in on the act with a penalty after Eric Traore was fouled by Belchance Makiese.

The two sides meet in the final leg on March 8 in Cairo with Zanaco the team with the mountain to climb.

Zambians in SA pray against gassing and mob injustice in Zambia

Zambians living in South Africa have held a special prayer service for Zambia at the Bread of Life Church International in Midrand, South Africa.

This follows gassing of innocent people and instant mob injustices against individuals accused of being involved in chemical spraying in Zambia.The prayers were graced by Pastor Gideon Kapafu who led the inter-denominational prayers for God’s protection over Zambia.

The Church prayed for peace , love and unity to prevail in Zambia amidst the gassing and mob injustices that the country was experiencing.
And Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Major General Jackson Miti said it was important that the country was committed in Gods hands.

Major General Miti said prayer was a pillar for Zambian’s sustenance, as such, it was important that Zambians united in prayer against recent incidences of chemical spraying and mob injustices.

He thanked President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for asking the nation to pray against gassing and mob justice.

Meanwhile, President of the Association of Zambians in South Africa(ZASA) Fernand Simanya described what Zambia was currently experiencing as disheartening.He called for God’s protection over the nation of Zambia as well as peace and unity among citizens.

CAF WRAP: Bruising Champions League Weekend For Zambian Stars

It was a bruising weekend for Zambians in first leg action away of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League quarterfinals.

In Morocco on Friday, TP Mazembe of DR Congo were beaten 2-0 away by three-time champions Raja Casablanca in Casablanca.

Defenders Tandi Mwape and Kabaso Chongo played the full 90 minutes for the five-time champions from the DR Congo while midfielder Rainford Kalaba was substituted in the 70th minute.

In Cairo 24 hours later, 2016 winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa also lost by the same margin to record eight-time African champions Al Ahly.

But goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was an unused substitute in the last eight tie.

The final leg deciders are scheduled for March 7.

The 2020 Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni Speaking people

The 2020 Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni Speaking people of Chipata in Eastern Province brought different kinds of people who came to witness the annual event.

The Theme for this year’s ceremony was “Preserving our culture for our heritage and environment”.

The guest of honor was Defense Minister Hon Davies Chama who was accompanied by Tourism and Arts Minister Hon Ronald Chitotela, Finance Minister Dr. Bwalya Ng’andu, Housing and Infrastructure Development Minister Hon Vincent Mwale, Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Hon Lawrence Sichalwe among other senior dignitaries.

Former South Africa President Jacob Zuma’s two children also attended.

N’cwala Traditional Ceremony is held every year on the last Saturday of February by the Ngoni people of Chipata City in Eastern Province of Zambia.

It is a celebration of the first harvests of the year.

The ceremony takes place at Mutenguleni village in Chipata.

N’cwala Ceremony was revived in 1980 by Paramount Chief Mpezeni III. At the ceremony, the Ngoni people pay homage to their ancestral spirits, commemorating their victories during their tribal wars, during their migration from current day South Africa and praising their God for giving them fresh crops in the fields

The Nc’wala traditional ceremony sparks various activities which are centered around the ceremony including the Ungoni Exhibition which is presented by the Ministry of Tourism and Arts at Luangwa House and visits to the Nsingo Community Museum where people turn up in numbers to learn more about the History of the Ngoni people. The Museum has various Ngoni cultural items on display and has a lot of history about the migration of the Ngoni speaking people from present-day KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to Chipata, Eastern Province – Zambia.

The government says it appreciates the important role that traditional ceremonies play in helping the country in preserving and sharing of traditions, customs and values that define Zambians as people.

Speaking during the 38th Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni speaking people in Chipata City, Defense Minister Hon Davies Chama said this is an important day not only for the Ngoni people of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia but also for the entire continent of Africa and the world at large.

Hon Chama said the government recognizes the institution of chieftaincy as an important player in national development.

“It is important to mention that since independence, Zambia has remained a beacon of peace at regional, continental and international levels. This peace we have enjoyed came through our collective responsibility as a people expressed in our national motto One Zambia, One Nation,” he said.

“This has further emphasized in our national values and principles enshrined in our constitution. These National values and principles are morality and ethics, patriotism, National unity, democracy, constitutionalism, human dignity, equity, social justice, equality, nondiscrimination, good governance, integrity and sustainable development.”

The Defense Minister also said government will not stop talking about the need to continue fighting early marriage, teenage pregnancies and gender based violence until social vices are completely curbed.

“Hundreds of our young children, especially the girl child, have their quality of life compromised because they are either married off early or fall pregnant at a tender age thereby preventing them from developing their full potential in life. Both the girl and boy child must be well protected and nurtured to help them realise their full potential,” he added.

And Tourism and Arts Minister Hon Ronald Chitotela says traditional ceremonies are key to the promotion of the tourism sector.

He said this in Chipata in an interview with journalists during the commemoration of Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni speaking people at Mtenguleni Village.

Hon Chitotela said there is no doubt that traditional ceremonies also help people to live in harmony.

“I am very proud to be here and be with our Ngoni friends who have successfully hosted another colorful ceremony. I must mention that these ceremonies help us to live in harmony as people as well as helping us to promote oneness,” said the Tourism and Arts Minister.

He said his ministry appreciates the role traditional ceremonies play in preserving culture, norms and good values as well as passing this to the young generation.

Hon Chitotela further called on parents to ensure that they pass on the culture to young people saying this will help in preserving Zambia’s good culture.

He emphasized that Zambia has a rich culture and it is here to stay.

UTH targets to conduct 50 Open Heart surgeries this year

The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) targets to conduct 50 Open Heart surgeries this year.

UTH Director of Clinical Care and Diagnostics services Alex Makupe says the institution is aiming at improving the level of medical practice and care of patients.

Speaking to ZNBC News, Dr Makupe said Zambian surgeons have been conducting open-heart surgery on patients this week, with the technical support of a team from Japan.

He said going forward, the local medical teams at the hospital will be able to conduct the surgeries on their own.

Dr Makupe said the overall objective is to equip the UTH with enough expertise to conduct major operations, while the first level hospitals will deal with minor ones.
