Residents of Kalumbila District warned against taking law into their own hands

3

Deputy Inspector General of Police In-Charge of Administration Eugene Sibote has warned members of the community in Kisasa area of Kalumbila District in North -Western Province not to take the law into their own hands.

Yesterday, some members of the community in Kisasa blocked the Solwezi -Mwinilunga Road with logs and in the process damaged the screen of a bus belonging to Power Tools when word went round that individuals believed to be behind the spate of gassing people at night were in the area.

Mr Sibote who is in Solwezi District rushed to the scene of the incident in Kisasa with a team of police officers to calm the situation and managed to apprehend 35 people for riotous behaviour.

“We shall not allow lawlessness to prevail anywhere including here in Kalumbila. People should not be misled by the images appearing on social media circulated by a few individuals who are bent to instill fear in the innocent citizens. Police will deal with all those involved decisively”, Mr Sibote warned.

He assured the community of adequate police presence in the area and that all suspected individuals should be reported to the police unlike people committing crimes by taking the law into their own hands.

Police in Solwezi last week recorded 26 cases of houses which were sprayed with unknown chemical in Manyama and Lumwana East areas.

This is according to a statement issued to the media by Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo.

Livingstone High Court suspends Driving Licences for six motorists for causing death by dangerous driving

1

The Livingstone High Court has convicted and ordered for the suspension of Driving Licences for six motorists for causing death by dangerous driving.

According to the Warrants of Execution made available to the Road Transport and Safety Agency, the six drivers were convicted of one count each of the offence of causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the Road Traffic Act Number 11 of 2002.

During a criminal session held in Livingstone recently, the court ordered for the suspension of the Driving Licences for a period ranging from six to twelve months, with immediate effect.

The High Court has since directed the RTSA to effect the suspension of the Driving Licence for You Wenzeng, Morton Bwalya, Muyuba Chingulu, Ephraim Siame, Nalishebo Simunji, and Sitali Mubyana.

To this effect, the RTSA has effected the orders for the suspension of the six Driving Licences.

RTSA Head of Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga is hopeful that the move by the court will act as a deterrent to would-be road traffic offenders and send strong self-control signals to all motorists not to flout road traffic regulations with impunity.

SEER 1 calls for patience among Zambians over his plan to expose PF politicians

26

South Africa-based Nigerian prophet Andrew Ejimadu popularly known as SEER 1 has called for patience among Zambians over his plan to expose PF politicians that acquired powers from him to win the 2016 elections.

SEER 1 says a good number of politicians have returned the powers but many of them have remained arrogant because they want to prove to their party that they don’t know him.

“Anytime a dog wants to die, it doesn’t perceive the smell of food anymore. Am telling the nation to be patient for me because I want to take full responsibility of what am doing, this is not a joke”, he said.

SEER 1 challenged those that are denying knowing him to tell the nation if they never visited him the time he was in Zambia.

And SEER 1 has told Gospel musician Kings Malembe to shut up saying he doesn’t know anything in the spiritual realm.

He told the musician who recently held a media briefing claiming SEER 1 was poor when he came to Zambia to stop talking because the battle is bigger than him.

SEER 1 was yesterday scheduled to reveal the names of people that have benefited from his powers but said he will do so this Thursday.

But Founder of Shalom Embassy International Apostle Sunday Sinyangwe says controversial South Africa-based Nigerian prophet Andrew Ejimadu popularly known as SEER 1 is a liar and conman who is playing on people’s minds.

Apostle Sinyangwe during the Sunday Service said no man of God threatens to kill people hence his threats should not be taken serious.

The Clergyman who once worked closely with Seer 1 assured the nation that no one will die amongst those who were threatened with death because he is interceding with other men of God.

Addressing his congregants, Apostle Sinyangwe said Seer 1 who has promised to publish a list of people who acquired powers from him to win the 2016 elections does not have powers he claims to have.

Choma medical college closed

0

The General Nursing Council of Zambia has deregistered the Choma Medical College with immediate effect for failing to comply with the set nursing education and training standards.

Director for Regulation and Compliance Thom Yung’ana states that the college has been operating without clinical instructors and no required minimum number of lecturers.

Mr Yung’ana says the college has also been operating without minimum prescribed and recommended number of text books as well as computers in its library.

This is in addition to the skills laboratory failing to meet the minimum required standard to support ideal student learning environment due to lack of essential equipment.

Meanwhile, Mr Yung’ana says the college was giving false returns and reports to the council with intent to mislead it in believing that the college still had the capacity to train nurses when in fact not.

In addition, the College had been recruiting some student nurses who do not meet the required minimum qualifications to train as nurses at a fee, which he says is tantamount to collecting money by false pretense.

Mr Yung’ana has assured the affected student nurses at the college that the council will transfer them to other nursing colleges.

History Making Zanaco Reach CAF Confed Cup Quarterfinals

8

Zanaco have secured their debut quarterfinal qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup after drawing 1-1 away in Morocco at RSB Berkane.

They join Zesco(three times) and Nkana(once) as the third club to advance from the group stage in continental club competition.

Sunday evenings result saw Zanaco finish second in Group C on 10 points, one behind Berkane whom they also held 1-1 in the first leg in Lusaka on December 8.

Zanaco beat DC Motema Pembe of DR Congo to the second quarterfinal place on goal difference despite the latter’s 1-0 home win over bottom placed ESAE of Benin in the simultaneous kickoff in Kinshasa.

In the game, Burkina Faso midfielder Alain Traore put the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup runners-up ahead in the 2nd minute.

But Rodgers Kola equalized in the 39th minute as Zanaco held out pressure from Berkane for the remainder of the game to remain unbeaten since the start of the competition in the preliminary round in August.

Zanaco’s draw also saw them break a 28-year- old jinx when they became the first Zambian club to leave Morocco unbeaten with a point there.

Meanwhile, Zanaco will know their quarterfinal opponents on February 5 when the final stage draws are made in Cairo.

Birthday Boy Chamanga Knocks Out Power

0

Life began at 40 for veteran ex-Chipolopolo striker James Chamanga on Sunday when his lone goal inspired Red Arrows to an away victory over ten-man Power Dynamos.

Chamanga had a 40th birthday to remember at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe when his 2nd minute goal handed Arrows a 1-0 victory over Power.

The striker turned-in Francis Simwanza’s corner to take his league tally to 11 goals this season and tied with leading scorer and Zesco United striker Jesse Were.

But it was Power who played all the football thereafter but could not find a way through Arrows’ disciplined defence.

Arrows then bolstered their iron wall with the arrival of defensive midfielder Paul Katema who replaced Evans Musonda in the 47th minute to suffocate any creativity by Power’s playmaker Larry Bwalya.

Power then suffered a major setback when midfielder Benson Sakala took a rare early shower when he received his second booking of the day in the 88th minute.

The result saw Power sustain their second successive league loss under Mutapa to whose seven-match unbeaten run was ended by Lusaka Dynamos on January 26 in a2-1 away loss.

Arrows are sixth on 32 points, six behind leaders Nkana while Power are 10th 28 points after picking up one point from their last three games.

The government has blamed fake news for the recent riot in Kalumbila District, North Western Province that saw Kakaindu Police Station set ablaze.

Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo said that the circulation of fake news has reached alarming levels leading to people rioting over issues that do not even exist, adding that members of the public are reacting to information that is false and destroying public property which costs government a lot of money.

Mr Kampyongo further warned those that are circulating fake news on social media concerning ritual attacks to stop as this is likely to breach the peace which the country has been enjoying.

Speaking when he attended a church service at St Daniel Catholic Church in Solwezi, Mr. Kampyongo urged Zambians to continue maintaining peace.

And North Western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu urged the public not to be deceived by people pretending to be men of God.

Mr. Mubukwanu said Christians have the duty of building and not destroying adding that any man of God preaching destruction should be ignored.

And North Western Province Patriotic Front Chairperson Jackson Kungo accused opposition political parties of inciting people to riot by spreading alarming information.

Mr. Kungo said it is sad that opposition political leaders are using the recent spate of attacks to gain political mileage at the expense of people’s lives.

He said the party is saddened by the recent gas attacks and called on the youths to desist from the riots as they are retrogressive.

The ruling Patriotic Front in North Western Province is saddened with people who took the law in their hands by setting ablaze Kakaindu Police Post based on unfounded rumors in Kalumbila District.

PF- North-Western Province Chairperson Jackson Kungo says burning of the police post is retrogressive and should not be tolerated.

Mr. Kungo says people should learn to work closely with the police because the officers are there to protect them.

He says the facility was built at a huge cost to service the surrounding community.

Mr. Kungo who is also PF Member of the Central Committee told ZNBC News in a statement that security wings should bring to book all those involved in the burning of the

Britain seeks closer economic ties with Africa following Brexit

20

Britain is leaving the European Union on Friday, starting the clock on an 11-month transition period during which the country will try to sign as many new trade deals as possible. African countries are a prime target.

The UK government has said that it will prioritize trade negotiations this year with the European Union, but it has also made early overtures to countries such as Mozambique and Ghana. Prime Minister Boris Johnson clearly wants closer economic ties with Africa.
“We in the UK have a vital job in continuing to convince people across the continent that we’re not just a great friend and ally, a reliable ally, but also the people you should be doing business with,” Johnson said earlier this month at the UK-Africa Investment Summit.

Huge potential

While a member of the European Union, Britain lagged some of its peers in terms of exports to Africa. In 2018, the United Kingdom exported goods worth roughly $10 billion to the continent, according to EU data. That was less than other EU countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.

But the dynamics could change after Brexit, according to Tokunbo Afikuyomi, a former trade economist who worked in the United Kingdom.
“Before Brexit, the EU made agreements on behalf of the entire union, and the interest of the UK may not have been a priority for the EU at the time of making those negotiations,” he told CNN Business. “Now Britain can negotiate with more countries as they want.”
The United Kingdom has already started to replicate EU trade agreements that will no longer apply when the transition period ends. So far, trade deals have been signed with 11 African countries, according to the UK government, covering 43% of the country’s total trade with Africa.

What does the UK have to offer Africa?

The UK government touted Africa’s potential as a trading partner during this month’s summit in London.
Africa is home to eight of the world’s fastest-growing economies, the UK government said, and there is significant demand for services that can be provided by Britain.
“We have much to offer African nations — UK aid is tackling climate change and supporting women entrepreneurs, our tech and digital expertise is helping Africa grow new industries and the city of London is channeling billions of private investment into Africa,” said Alok Sharma, Britain’s international development secretary.
The United Kingdom announced commercial deals worth £6.5 billion ($8.6 billion) during the summit, including one signed by engineering company Rolls-Royce.

Andrew Jones, head of Africa practice for Linklaters, a law firm based in London, said that UK companies are looking to increase their investments in Africa. “I think the government is getting involved now to more systematically open up new markets,” he told CNN Business.
A huge free trade zone taking shape in Africa could also benefit UK companies by expanding markets and making it easier to do business across borders.
“Some of the UK’s large aid budget could [support] the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area … which would promote economic growth and offer more opportunities for UK exporters,” Sam Lowe, senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform, wrote recently.

What’s in it for Africa?

When UK businesses expand into African countries, they bring in knowledge, skills and technology, said Afikuyomi, who is now an editor at Stears Business.
They also bring money in the form of foreign direct investment.
“[Foreign direct investment] is a powerful tool for developing countries, especially countries like Nigeria where the government and central bank have been working towards attracting more investors,” said Afikuyomi.
African countries could also have better opportunities to raise revenue by exporting more of their services and goods to the United Kingdom.

Barriers to trade

Trade deals may help reduce tariffs and other barriers that have stymied trade between Britain and Africa.
“Some countries will be unable to export goods to the UK if the opportunity presents itself because they cannot meet the required standards for trade,” said Afikuyomi.

Unexpected and sudden changes in the value of currencies can also complicate trade in Africa, said Jones.
Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo have experienced exchange rate problems in the past. Nigeria devalued its currency in 2016, making it more expensive to buy foreign goods.

Competition in Africa
Other countries have been proactive investors in Africa in recent years.

In 2019, Germany set up a $1 billion development fund to promote infrastructure development and private investment on the continent. German companies including Volkswagen (VLKAF) and Siemens (SIEGY) have also established plants in countries like Rwanda and Ghana.

China, Africa’s largest trading partner, has invested billions of dollars in various sectors including, film, infrastructure and education across the continent.
Jones said more countries investing in Africa is a big win for all parties, including the United Kingdom.
“China has done lots of great things on the continent. On a macro level what they have done is incredibly useful for everyone. They have built infrastructure and funded airports,” he said.
“One of the great bottlenecks for many developing countries is the lack of infrastructure. So, the more infrastructure the better,” added Jones.

20 Die In Church While Rushing To Get Anointed With ‘Blessed Oil’

36

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – At least 20 people have been killed and over a dozen injured in a stampede during a church service at a stadium in northern Tanzania, a government official said on Sunday.

Hundreds of people packed a stadium on Saturday evening in Moshi town near the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and crushed each other as they rushed to get anointed with “blessed oil.”

“Twenty people died and 16 others were injured in the incident,” Moshi district commissioner Kippi Warioba told Reuters by telephone. Five of those killed were children, he said.

“The stampede occurred when the worshippers were rushing to get anointed with blessed oil,” Warioba said.

Pastor Boniface Mwamposa has been drawing huge crowds by promising prosperity and cure for disease to worshippers who walk on what he describes as “blessed oil” during his church services.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise due to the size of the crowd and dark conditions when the stampede occurred.

“The incident took place at night and there were many people, so there is a possibility that more casualties could emerge. We are still assessing the situation,” Warioba said.

Tanzania has seen a rise in the number of “prosperity gospel” pastors in recent years, who promise to lift people out of poverty and perform what they call miracle cures.

Thousands of people in the nation of 55 million flock to Pentecostal churches, whose main source of income is “tithe”, the 10% or so of income that worshippers are asked to contribute.

Mass hysteria is the thing we should fear, not a just another cold-like virus

11

The current global panic in reaction to the emergence of a fairly mild new virus is wholly unjustified and amounts to mass hysteria. Governments around the World should be containing the hysteria, not encouraging it. It is also essential to re-establish normal life as soon as possible and get people back to work.

* There is no evidence that the 2019-nCoV poses any greater threat to those who catch it than many forms of the flu virus.

* The mortality rate in China is around 2% – and appears to remain constantly within a narrow confidence interval around that rate. This does not make it a serious threat to human life.

* Only one person has died from the virus outside China – and he was a Chinese national from Wuhan. Given the number of detected cases then the mortality rate should be much higher if the virus was more dangerous than most common variants of flu.

* It is clear that mortalities have largely arisen amongst those already subject to serious health conditions, or weakened by age. In fact, as with all such viruses the principal cause of death is secondary bacterial infection.

* The source of the virus is said to be a market in Wuhan that sold wild animals, but there is evidence to suggest that people with no connection to the market were infected before the outbreak from the market.

* The animal that was supposed to be the source of the virus has not been specifically identified.

* The reason why pharmaceutical companies have not developed a vaccine for the common cold coronavirus is claimed to be that the virus is difficult to grow and isolate in the laboratory, yet within days of the genetic data relating to the 2019-nCoV being released it had been grown and isolated in an Australian laboratory.

* It appears that some medical experts, organisations and governments around the World were curiously over-prepared for this outbreak. Was this just good prediction – or due to a more sinister reason?

* It is also curious that there is little or no transmission beyond those with a Chinese ethnic origin.

* Although in the best position to offer assistance to China, the USA has offered no medical aid, or other support, and merely closed its borders to those traveling from China. Is this saying something about the virus’s source rather than Sino-American relations?

* The handling of the outbreak, and its communication has led to prejudice rather than sympathy towards virus sufferers and suspected sufferers – and, in some cases, deep infringements of human rights. It has also stoked xenophobia/ethic discrimination against those of Chinese origin living outside China. There has been little action by state authorities to curb this problem.

* The over-reaction of authorities, airlines, some health professionals is likely to do far more harm to the World than if normal containment methods were employed.

* The economic consequences of this global panic could be very serious and it leaves employer in a difficult position in trying to cope with stress, anxiety and discriminatory reactions amongst their workforce.

According to Robin Chater, Secretary-General of the Federation of International Employers (FedEE), “The priority now is for everyone to calm down, take a deep breath and think about this situation rationally. The medical profession has given us all misleading information about this outbreak and we need to focus on the emerging facts, even if they do not wish to do so. We must ensure no more harm is done – both to China’s burgeoning economy (that is driving growth elsewhere in the World) and to save us from spiralling down into another global recession. Human reason is falling prey to infantile emotion and this development is showing how little we have collectively travelled from our primitive origins.”

What is FedEE?

The Federation of International Employers (FedEE) is a leading corporate membership organisation for multinational companies. It was founded in 1998, with financial assistance from the European Commission. Today it is an independent body with corporate members all around the globe.

Today’s Message: Faith in the Middle

Today’s Scripture

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown…”
(Isaiah 43:2, NLT)

Faith in the Middle

In Genesis 37, God gave Joseph a dream that one day his family would bow down before him. God showed him the end, and the promise was planted in his heart. But what God didn’t show him was the middle. Years later, when the dream came to pass and Joseph was ruling over the nation of Egypt, I can hear him saying, “God, You gave me this incredible promise, but You didn’t tell me I’d be thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused of a crime, and put in prison for years.” If Joseph were here today, he would tell you, “Don’t get discouraged in the middle when life doesn’t make sense.” You know the promise is in your heart, but every circumstance says just the opposite. Keep believing, keep being your best. If you’ll have faith for the middle, the God of the middle is going to protect you, provide for you, and favor you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for Your promise to be with me through the deepest of waters. Even when life doesn’t make sense, I choose to trust in You and believe that You are working behind the scenes for my good. I will have faith for the middle. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Zambia Slovenia needs to formalise engagement

3

The head of the University of Ljubljana infectious faculty Dr Tatjana Zupanc is seeking greater formal coorporation between Zambia and Slovenia for interns and academic placements in order to benefit both countries as diplomatic relations grow.

Dr Zupanc was speaking during a meeting with the Ambassador of Zambia to Germany H.E Anthony Mukwita held at the medical faculty in the presence of the school’s specialist intern Professor Dr. Janez Tomaz and newly graduated Doctors that recently spent 90 days interning at the Nangoma Mission Hospital in Zambia.

“We have had informal relations with Zambia through our renowned missionary Father Stanko Rozman since 1990,” Dr Zupanc said, “through this relationship dozens of young doctors and even senior ones have gone to Nangoma but now we seek your help to formalise this relationship.”

Conversely, Professor Tomaz said nothing would give himself and the faculty more joy and gratitude than an exchange programme of medical academics and practitioners from Slovenia and Zambia swap places at universities and hospitals as soon as possible formally.

“We want you Ambassador to help us attract medical talent from Zambia’s hospitals to come and intern here in Slovenia and we want our Doctors to do the same in Zambia formally,” said Professor Tomaz.

Ambassador Mukwita said the two issues of formalising academic and medical placements was something positive that he believed could be done as President Edgar Lungu encourages greater global integration.

“The world is global now and there is a lot we can all learn from each other through official government channels as a matter of urgency,” said Ambassador Mukwita.

The embassy of Zambia commenced official relations with the Slovenian university in 2019 which led to graduating Doctors that were headed to their Sioma internship collect and donate various medical equipment for the mission hospital.

The embassy in Berlin then liaised with the First Lady Esther Lungu via her charity foundation, the Esther Lungu Foundation to transport the donation which included respirators to Nangoma Mission Hospital.

In the words of intern Doctors led by Dr. Klara Grad that just completed the 90 day stretch in Nangoma and now are back in Slovenia: “We are very grateful for the First Lady and the embassy of Zambia for the collaboration in getting the medical supply to Nangoma on time in good state. We are very thankful.”

Dr Grad said there is now three respirators for children as a result of the donation compared to only one before they got on the ground and the embassy and the First Lady deserved the plaudits.

“All the times collected reached the final destination, so we sincerely appreciate your selfless help and we appreciate,” the interns said in a letter they all signed.

Also for the first time in the meeting today was Dr Damjan Kozelj whose first stint in Zambia resulted into a one year none stop stretch and now she treks to Nangoma annually because she has developed a personal attachment to the hospital and people.

Dr Damjan wants to see how another area and province in Zambia can be developed in the way the missionaries and university students have done for Nangoma.

Ambassador Mukwita pledged to officially convey the message of gratitude to the First Lady from the university and Zambia’s honorary consul to Slovenia Damjan Zonta who has been instrumental in all engagements.

All this is happening on the side-lines of an annual reception President Borat Pohar holds for Ambassadors accredited to Slovenia such as Zambia that over sees Ljubljana from the Berlin station.

Ambassador Mukwita was accompanied by honorary consul Zonta and colleague Sasha Jalshovec at the university meeting.

In the past 30 years, cooperation between Zambia and Slovenia humanitarian wise has largely been informal despite deep rooted Christian relations background beyond diplomacy.

This is according to a statement issued by Kellys Kaunda, First Secretary Press and Public Relations at the embassy of Zambia in Berlin.

Chilubi Victory for PF is 100% Certain Despite Economical Challenges

31

By Dr. Joze Manda

The Parliamentary by-election race in Chilubi district has tightened significantly over the past one week and PF candidate Francis Mulenga Fube is most likely to win the elections set for February 13th  despite the PF losing some support amid widespread anger over corruption allegation, economical challenges, and high unemployment.

Pollsters put the PF well ahead of its nearest rivals the main opposition UPND, who are seating at only 20%.

The margin of victory of 65% for PF predicted by pollsters is large enough for Fube to win.

The PF’s lead, despite its reduced margin because of voter apathy, means the party will be mathematically assured of more than 50 percent of votes that will be cast during the by-election, given the uncertainties inherent to forecasting – an outcome of 50% of the votes is guaranteed without any doubt which also means PF will definitely retain their seat.

The confidence and the popularity of the PF candidate has added more advantage to the PF chance of an absolute victory. In his own words, the ruling PF Chilubi parliamentary candidate Mulenga Fube said a few weeks ago that the only thing that concerned him about the Chilubi by-election was the margin with which he will win the election. He said,
“I have won already; I am just working on the margins. It just has to be wider.”

It is also important to acknowledge and accept that PF has lost some support amid widespread anger over corruption allegation, economical challenges, and high unemployment but we must also always remember that the connection between economics and politics is clearly visible. Economic production sustains human life which, for most people, is the most important concern in life.

The prestige of a democratic government, its rise, and fall, usually depend on its economic performance and that is way Edgar Lungu has put his effort and that of his government in overdrive to cartel the challenges we are facing as can be seen with his commitment pledges as 2020 begins.

The predicated Chilubi victory is also an indicator of how we expect the trend to continue of PF winning going through into 2021 and which will culminate into the PF victory during the 2021 general elections.

While Lungu’s PF government is working on its challenges and continue to drive its infrastructure development agenda, the largest opposition, UPND has chosen to bury its head in the sand and refuses to offer genuine solutions, also believes the failures of PF will automatically push them into the ruling party, an unfortunate way to look at things.

UPND’s misfortune is to spend 80% of its available campaign time in urban areas where it has some good numbers than the rural areas where they lack a convincing support base, to the advantage of PF.

Unfortunately, it is the rural areas that comprise the majority; and so, successive ruling parties have played this demography to their advantage over the years.
