Zanaco Confident of CAF Confed Cup Pre-Group Stage Qualification

0

Coach Mumamba Numba is sure Zanaco will advance to the pre-group stage of the 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup after Sunday’s 2-1 away victory against Bolton City in Mauritius.

Numba said the consolation goal Bolton scored won’t be a factor when the teams meet in the return match of the first round on September 29 in Lusaka.

‘We have scored two goals away from home which puts us in a better position than them (Bolton),’ he said.

‘All we need is just to get down to work, plan and preparing the team so that we can get a victory even at home when we play them,’ Numba said.

Zanaco have joined the competition in the first round after being on bye at the preliminary stage.

Scheme to connect the Head of State to drug related activities is Evil, says YALI

President Edgar Lungu proposing a toast to KK.

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has noted a statement being circulated by GEARS Executive Director MacDonald Chpenzi, allegedly issued by a group of boys, led by Wilfred Chilufya and some Chibomba, purporting to be members of the Young African Leaders Initiative in Zambia.

In the statement, they strongly suggest in the first paragraph that there was a drug-related case in the United States of America involving the head of State. This statement is irresponsible and part of the continued scheme by those who are laboring to link the Head of State to some imaginary drug-related cases in the US.

We want to be clear that the issuance of such a statement under the Young African Leaders Initiative by those boys is criminal as the Registrar made it clear during a meeting attended by ourselves and those boys that the Zambian laws only recognize one Young African Leaders Initiative led by Mr. Ntewewe and its membership is well defined.

We, therefore, find the conduct of those boys criminal in trying to illegally operate in Zambia or anywhere in SADC without official recognition. We shall rake up this matter with the Registrar at PACRA and the Minister of Home Affairs.

However, what concerns us is that these boys are now being used to try and make suggestions of an imaginary drug-related case but also making the reference of the same to the Head of State.

Again, we restate our position that YALI believes the dangerous politics where people with business interests are using an opposition leader to paint the Head of State in imaginary drug-related matters is lacking patriotism and act of opportunism.

HH declares the hunger situation a national disaster as he describe Lungu’s parley speech as mediocre

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has declared the prevailing hunger situation in the country a national disaster.

Mr Hichilema has since called on well wishers to donate food items towards the cause.

He has since appealed to President Edgar Lungu to emulate the declaration to further allow the international community to unlock its emergency funds.

“Let me use this opportunity to declare an emergency and a disaster with regards to hunger in this country. I will not wait for Lungu (President Edgar Lungu) and the PF to dictate how we help our people. We shall not allow the situation to continue unabated”, said Mr Hichilema.

He said he hoped that President Lungu would follow his lead and allow the flow of humanitarian aid to affected areas as both the party and his individual assistance is not enough to avert the crisis which he said has reached endemic levels.

President Hichilema who was speaking during a press briefing this morning said it was wrong for the government to refuse to declare a national disaster.

“It is wrong for Lungu to refuse to declare the hunger situation in the country a national disaster when the majority of our people have resorted to eating unripe wild fruits. Just in Chibombo and Rufunsa districts, our people don’t have access to clean drinking water, health services and food,” said Mr. Hichilema.

He said it was wrong for President Lungu to refuse to declare the hunger as a national disaster when bigger economies such as Brazil have done so and were receiving aid from the United States of America.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hichilema has described as mediocre President Lungu’s State of the Nation Address last Friday.

He said it is clear to see that Zambia’s fate has now been relegated to climate change.

Mr. Hichilema said the current hunger situation should not be blamed on climate change but the poor leadership style of the PF.

He said it was unfortunate that the government failed to utilize the normal to above normal rainfall received in the Northern half of the country to grow more maize which would have averted the food insecurity adding that the continued export of maize despite warnings of an impending El Niño is a sign of failed leadership.

Mr. Hichilema said it was unfortunate that the PF is blaming Climate Change when other countries had managed to weave their way through the problem by coming up with sound solutions to combat the problem.

He has since vowed to continue with his community visitations including Chawama and Gwembe, distributing mealie-meal to the needy as the Republican Constitution guarantees him freedom of movement.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has stated that the price of the staple food mealie meal is way beyond the reach of majority Zambians.

Speaking when he donated mealie to the vulnerable in Lusaka’s Bauleni area on Sunday, Mr. Hichilema said the poor are failing to buy mealie meal.

At the same event, the UPND leader received more than 200 PF members who joined the party this afternoon in Bauleni.

“We took sometime assisting the vulnerable groups in Lusaka’s Bauleni compound where we donated bags of mealie meal. The aged; the differently-abled, the widows, the orphans and other such groups are so dear to us and they need a helping hand especially under the current difficult economic situation,” Mr. Hichilema said.

“The price of our staple food, mealie meal is way beyond the reach of our citizens. And this is what we warned last year in September when we warned our colleagues in the PF regime and offered solutions to mitigate the effects of poor rainfall in some parts of the country.”

He added, “We told them not to export the maize and other crops based they went ahead claiming the nation had excess produce. We advised them to lower the cost of fertilizer and other inputs so as to ensure increased production, but to date, the price of inputs is way beyond the reach of our citizens.”

HH directs all UPND MPs to votes against Bill no.10, claims bill has nothing good to benefit Zambians

Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has directed all UPND Members of Parliament to vote against the Constitution amendment bill number 10 when it comes up for deliberation before parliament.

Mr. Hichilema emphasized that all opposition members of parliament should walk away in protest of the bill for it has nothing good to benefit Zambians.

Mr. Hichilema said that the decision was arrived at after members of the Central committee deliberated on the matter.

Mr Hichilema said this during a media briefing held at the party Secretariat in Lusaka.

But Parliamentary Chief Whip, Brian Mundubile has described Mr Hichilema ‘s instructions to the MPs as unfortunate.

Mr. Mundubile has since urged Mr. Hichilema to rescind his position by allowing UPND MPs to interrogate bill number ten on the basis of its merits.

He said there is a need to put aside partisan interests when addressing matters of the constitution.

Mr. Mundibile has since called for unity of purpose in responding to the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

Meanwhile, the PF has advised its PF Members of Parliament and independent MPs to support the comprehensive Nuclear bill in Parliament.

PF Media Director Sunday Chanda says there is a need to support the government in meeting its international atomic energy agency standards through ratification of relevant treaties.

Mr. Chanda says the decision to embrace nuclear energy will help the country in achieving the Seventh National Development Plan-7NDP and the vision 2030.

Mr. Chanda was speaking to ZNBC News in an interview in Lusaka.

And Mr. Chanda further said that nuclear power has very low lifetime greenhouse gas emissions which makes it a climate change mitigation option.

He said climate change is real hence the need to work together in helping the government mitigate the effects.

Kambwili now questions the Source of Presidential Empowerment Initiative Fund

NDC President Chishimba Kambwili
NDC President Chishimba Kambwili

National Democratic Congress (NDC) President Chishimba Kambwili has now started questioning the source of funds that are being used for the Presidential Empowerment Initiative Fund (PEIF).

Speaking to journalists at his house today after being interviewed by the Drug Enforcement Commission, where he refused to divulge any information regarding his allegations against president Lungu’s friend Mr. Valden Findlay, Mr. Kambwili said that the source of the funds being used was questionable and that he suspects that the money being used could be a subject of Money laundering.

PEIF, now headed by Clement Tembo as National Coordinator, was established in 2015 by President Lungu to support men and women in the informal sector that were deemed vulnerable and underprivileged.

The fund started with President Lungu’s kind gesture of sacrificing 10% of his salary, as well as contributions received from well-wishers.

The initiative originally targeted marketeers, but due to demand from other sectors and the encouraging performance of the marketeers who managed to faithfully revolve the fund, the PEIF diversified into other areas including fish farming, poultry, goat rearing and other endeavors, such as providing assistance in the construction of churches.

And Mr. Kambwili reaffirmed his earlier position that he is ready to meet Lusaka business executive Valden Findlay in Court over defamation charges. Mr. Kambwili said that he has a lot of information on the suspected illicit activities of Mr. Findlay, adding that he has lost confidence in investigative agencies such as DEC and the ACC.

The NDC leader said the investigative wings in question are highly polarised and that it is for this reason that he refused to answer queries from DEC

The NDC leader said he has a lot of information about Mr. Findlay which information he is ready to disclose in Court.

Patson and Mwepu Set For Tuesday UEFA Champions League Test

1

Chipolopolo striker Patson Daka and midfielder Enock Mwepu are set for their UEFA Champions League group stage debuts on Tuesday.

Austrian champions RB Salzburg will kick-off their group stage race at home on September 17 against Belgian champions side Genk.

It will be Salzburg’s first return to the league phase since the 1994/1995 season.

The match comes just three days after Patson scored a brace for the pacesetters a 7-2 demotion at home of seventh placed Hartberg to take his league tally this season to four after seven rounds rounds of matches played into the 2019/20 campaign.

Patson and Mwepu played the full 90 minutes of that league match.

Tuesday’s date will also mark the first time a Zambian duo from one club will be on the same side in a UEFA Champions League group stage fixture.

It will be date of other firsts with Salzburg’s coach Jesse Marsch also set to become the first USA trainer to manage in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Meanwhile, Salzburg needs a victory at home on match-day-one before heading to England for the big one against Group E giants Liverpool on October 2.

Emission of harmful chemicals irks DPS-Eastern

1

Eastern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Josephat Lombe has raised concern over the use of chemicals that are harmful to the ozone layer.

Mr Lombe notes that the use of man-made chemicals such as hydro-Chloro-Floro-Carbon (HFCs) has been leading to a decline in the stratospheric ozone layer, and stressed the need to eliminate the use of ozone layer depleting and global warming substances.

He was speaking at a stakeholder’s meeting on the protection of the ozone layer in Chipata this morning.

Mr Lombe stressed the need to use safer environmentally sustainable alternatives and noted that Zambia is complying with the phase-out targets to reduce the consumption of all controlled substances.

He stated that government has undertaken comprehensive national phase out measures as a framework to control ozone layer depleting substances through the establishment of a national ozone unit, the development of regulation and the implementation of a number of refrigerant management plans, as well as community awareness among others.

Mr Lombe also noted that capacity building and the encouragement of the industrial sector, to switch to ozone and climate friendly equipment, energy efficient and alternative technologies, have also been prioritised by government.

Earlier, Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) Director-General John Msimuko said his organization is committed to assist the country in phasing out of ozone layer depleting substances and the reduction of their impact on global warming.

Mr Msimuko said ZEMA is determined to enforce the environmental management ACT No.12 OF 2011 (EMA) and subsidiary legislation such as the extended producer responsibility (EPR).

The stakeholders meeting is part of the commemoration of the World Ozone Day which falls tomorrow, September 17.

Digitalisation of logistics sector in Zambia to unlock growth

2
Mupota Muchelemba, Managing Director of Seidor Zambia
Mupota Muchelemba, Managing Director of Seidor Zambia

The UNITED Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) executive secretary, Vera Songwe, has said that Africa has all the pre-requisites for rapid economic transformation in the next decade. “But the importance of digitalisation and the digital economy in driving growth and structural transformation, as well as optimising fiscal performance in Africa, cannot be overstated,” she said.

This optimism is reflected in the massive potential of the Zambian logistics sector. The industry is primed to increase revenue from opportunities that arise out of digital transformation.

Says Mupota Muchelemba, Managing Director of Seidor Zambia, “Zambia is a land-locked country, rich in natural resources, with good road infrastructure, so it is not surprising that the number of freight management and transportation businesses is growing. Now it’s time for companies to optimise their supply chains by investing in their business processes through the leveraging of digitalised information.”

Most local distribution businesses primarily transport goods for mining companies, agricultural products or general freight. In addition, there is a need for the transport of imported or exported goods for use locally or in neighbouring countries.

This leads to a lot of moving parts that have to be optimised. Companies, for example, need to have a healthy fleet, which has to be close enough to where goods need to be collected and delivered and to beat the competition in terms of rates.

“Many businesses still manage these complexities using multiple small systems,” explains Muchelemba. “For example, one system may look after contracts while another logs and tracks goods. Some companies are known to just have a billing system in place and use, for example, a GPS tracking system.

This means that the vast majority of the local transport and logistics companies in Zambia are still relying on paper-based and/or manual systems. Just by their nature, this is open to inefficiencies. Three or four disconnected systems with different people using different spreadsheets leads to things falling through the cracks. This has the knock-on effect of a loss of trust by clients and potential financial losses.”

At a recent event hosted at the Seidor Zambia office in Lusaka, Jason Kazilimani, the CEO of KPMG and President of the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA), spoke about how important it is that Zambian industry transforms in order for it to move with the times and remain sustainable.

The growing opportunity (or threat) of globalisation also needs to be considered, with many international businesses wanting to expand into Africa. These competitors will enter the Zambia marketplace with effective digital systems in place already, making them a more competitive option than local suppliers.

It also then becomes essential for local businesses to control costs, to keep their prices down and offer market-related fees. It therefore becomes a priority to know where costs are coming from and whether saving is possible.

To ensure growth, the local industry needs to remain competitive by embracing digital transformation.

Says Muchelemba, “There are very few systems that can effectively track and manage all the parts of a distribution business. Not many ERP systems can effectively combine all of the financial and operational aspects of logistics businesses into one system. SAP Business One, combined with the specially developed logistics functionality of the Transport One add-on, has solid local case studies behind it.”

Zambian logistics businesses that use SAP Business One such as Juba Transport and AM Motors, have clearly shown how profitable it can be to move to the right integrated system. Both have been able to automate workflows, increase efficiency and get an accurate real-time overview as well as valuable insights into their businesses.

Explains Muchelemba, “Previously, Juba Transport used three different systems to manage the finance, transport operations and maintenance parts of their business. This involved a lot of paperwork and expense. Now they have access to real-time information. They know when permits need to be renewed, they can schedule maintenance of vehicles and can track all expenses, the progress of deliveries and more.”

As logistics is a very specialised industry, it is important to choose the right partner to help you invest in digitalising your business.

The right partner is one who has experience in your industry and already understands the challenges of your type of business. It is not enough for a service provider to know the software system; they need to understand your industry in order to properly hold your hand and help you make the most of your investment. It is a big investment and you risk the success of your project if you don’t have the right partner.
