HH picked up and taken to Police station, Zambia Police to issue a Statement later

FILE: UPND president Hakainde Hichilema

Police have finally picked up UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema this morning and have taken him to Woodlands Police Station for questioning.

This follows a raid at his New Kasama residence seeking to arrest the opposition leader for failing to give way to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade in Mongu on Sunday.

Mr Hichilema was driven to the police station at around 11:00 hours, with his lawyer Jack Mwiimbu and other lawyers accompanying the opposition leader.

This morning, hundreds of heavily armed police were still keeping vigil at the premises and turned away all journalists and party officials.

Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo said she will issue a statement later.

And The Research Institute for Development and Democracy has admonished UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and his Deputy Geofrey Mwamba for attempting to obstruct the Presidential motorcade in Mongu during the Kuomboka Traditional Ceremony on Saturday.

Institute Executive Director Malama Kapanda says the provocative acts were tailored at embarrassing the Head of State for cheap political expedience.

Mr Kapanda says the UPND leaders’ scheme was a threat to the life of the Head of State and the people along the route to Limulunga.

He has since urged investigative wings to probe the motive of the two leaders against the President.

Mr Kapanda who is also Association of Suppliers and Contractors president was speaking in a telephone interview with ZNBC news in Lusaka today

Meanwhile, former Kafue District Commissioner Michael Bwalya has called for a thorough inquiry into the conduct of Mr Hichilema and his supporters.

Mr Bwalya said the UPND scheme was a recipe for chaos in which many lives could have been lost if the presidential guards were to execute provisions of the security protocols.

He has since urged Mr Hichilema and his followers to accept the August 11 electoral defeat and move on.

Nyirenda weighs in on Walter Bwalya debate

23

Chipolopolo coach Wedson Nyirenda says he has not called Nkana striker Walter Bwalya to the national team because his nationality was not clear.

Bwalya say he is Zambian-born from a Congolese mother and a Zambian father.

But Nyirenda said there was no documentation to show that Bwalya was Zambian.

“I always say that as long as the documentation is in place I have no problem. But as long as the
legitimacy is still in question I cannot take a risk,” he said.

Last year, ex-Zambia coach George Lwandamina called Bwalya to the national team before the player was dropped.

“We do not want any scandal all we need is clear things. If he is Zambian, he is Zambian let it be on paper. I do not want any doubts, any loopholes, if he is Zambian he is Zambian,” Nyirenda said.

Bwalya was the 2016 FAZ Super Division top scorer with 24 goals.

“He should also prove that he is worth the call up. He has been playing good football but he needs to understand that in football what other people may be seeing is not what the technical staff see,” he
added.

EU donates two vehicles to Ministry of Mines

The Mineral Production Monitoring Project has handed over to the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development two Isuzu KB300 vehicles provided by the European Union to help with outreach programs to the mines.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at new government complex in Lusaka, head of infrastructure at the European Union in Zambia Mr Adam Grodzicki said the vehicles will be used to directly support the Ministry of Mines as it works to improve Mineral Production Monitoring here in the country.

“The vehicles will enable travel to various mine sites in Zambia for inspections, audits and training sessions. With these vehicles the Ministry of Mines will fully execute its mandate as the regulator of the mining industry. It will allow the Ministry to be on-site as it works with the mines to ensure their processes, procedures and systems are correct and accurate.”

Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Mr Paul Chanda commended the European Union’s support of the Zambian government’s efforts to build strength and sustainability in mineral production monitoring.

“I am encouraged by the prospect of enhancing our ability to travel directly to our mining partners, so that cooperation with the mines can be nurtured and sustained.”

Mr Grodzicki says the European Union has already actively supported the development of a digital reporting system for the mines and has funded new laboratory equipment for the Ministry so that better analyses can be done on materials produced and exported by the mining companies.

Movie Review: John Wick 2

In this next chapter following the 2014 hit, legendary hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.

PROS

  • Incredible action scenes.
  • Excellent performance by the entire cast.
  • Interesting Storyline

CONS

  • The movie is, at times, too fast paced that it does not give the viewer a chance to process what is happening.

FAVORITE QUOTES

The Bowery King: John Wick, you’re not very good at retiring.

John Wick: I’m working on it.

The Bowery King: He’s offered seven million dollars for your life. seven million dollars is a lot of money, Mr. Wick.

John Wick: So I guess you have a choice. Do you want a war or do you want to just give me a gun?

The Bowery King: Somebody please get this man a gun!

CONCLUSSION

More often than not, sequels to highly rated movies fail to live up to the expectation of the audience. This is not the case with John Wick 2. I can be as bold as to say that this sequel is better than the first film. Keanu Reeves gave a splendid performance of a man who wants to leave a life full of violence but keeps getting pulled back in.

John Wick 2 is filled with high octane action scenes, but it is not all blood and bullets. The movie also has a great, nail biting, story line. Even if you have not watched the first film, following this one will not be a problem.

I’m hopeful that this continues on to be a great franchise!

Police fire tear gas at HH’s house and block the main road and the gate to his house

Heavily armed Police officers raided the residence of opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema in New Kasama area in Lusaka.

Police switched off power at the house, blocked the main roads and the broke down the gates to the house to gain access to the house before firing teargas into the house.

It is believed that Mr Hichilema and his wife and children were in the house at the time of the raid.

Mr Hichilema’s lawyers were initially prevented from accessing the house but Jack Mwiimbu confirmed that he was later allowed inside after 01 Hours.

Around 03 Hours, police officers were still inside the house and it was unclear what they were searching.

Mobile phones belonging to all the people inside the house are now unreachable.

Police Spokeswoman Esther Mwaata Katongo said police will issue a statement later.

And MMD President Nevers Mumba condemned the police action at Mr Hichilema’s residence.

“We are just witnessing more teargas being fired at the residence of UPND President, Hakainde Hichilema and state Police have surrounded the entrance and even his lawyers are not allowed to enter,” he posted on his Facebook page.

“This comes while another opposition leader, Savior Chishimba has announced that he is in hiding for fear of similar intimidation from the Police, Fred Members is in hiding for fear of similar state intimidation and GBM, the UPND Vice president was earlier today teargassed for talking to the press after his court case,” he said.

“Is this why the PF wants to withdraw us from the ICC? We demand that this kind of targeted intimidation of the opposition must come to an end immediately. We also implore the international community to quickly check independently, the state of affairs we are quickly being plunged into as a country,” Dr Mumba said.

PF WARNS HH FOR ENDANGERING THE LIFE OF THE PRESIDENT IN MONGU – STATEMENT BY PF DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL MRS MUMBI PHIRI

Lusaka, 10th April, 2017 – We are warning Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to desist from endangering the life of President Edgar Lungu following what happened in Mongu. The institution of Presidency is established and protected by the laws of Zambia and Hichilema has no option but to respect a creature of the highest laws of the land – the Constitution.

The PF wishes to commend His Excellency President Lungu that once again he demonstrated good judgement under extreme provocation in his capacity as Commander in Chief. PF has seen this quality in President Lungu from the painful moments when he handed over the instruments of power to Dr. Guy Scott even when the law was on his side but had to do that to preserve peace in the nation. It was one quality that saw him preside over a very painful transition in the nation following President Sata’s untimely death. While Hichilema thinks this attribute is a sign of weakness on the part of the President, Zambians know that is what makes him (President Lungu) a great leader.

As a matter of fact, when Hichilema thought he was posing a threat on President Lungu’s life, he placed his life and those of his overzealous followers in harm’s way. His childishness could have easily cost his life and that of other innocent citizens had security wings under the Commander in Chief not acted appropriately.

We have been reliably informed that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Republican President personally issued an order to restrain the police from bumping off the small opposition motorcade. This is because President Lungu attached a lot of significance to the Kuomboka Ceremony that he was not going to allow that there was no way he was going to throw it in disarray by playing into Hichilema’s evil scheme.

Besides holding Hichilema personally responsible for refusing to move out of the road as the law prescribes, PF wishes to call on the Police to investigate how it was possible for Hichilema to overstay on the road. This is because the President’s security cannot allow for such lapses. We make this call mindful that while President Lungu is PF Party President, he is also Republican President as he occupies the highest office in the land.

We wish to bring to the nation’s attention that it is not a secret that according to VVIP Protection orders the only other option, besides the one to restrain, was to disable the vessel and its occupants. That would have meant disabling the Hichilema’s vehicle and those of his followers including disabling everyone who occupied the said vehicles. This is what President Lungu’s good judgment prevented from happening otherwise we could have been talking of lost lives including those of the two unreasonable and bitter opposition leaders. That is the gravity attached to the Office of President as an institution and something Hichilema must reflect on seriously.

We ask Zambians of goodwill to dismiss Hichilema’s bitter politics because they are contaminating society. It is time that we confined him to the dustbins of political history. He must be warned however that he has embarked on a wrong path and soon and very soon, he will reap the consequences of his actions. President Lungu has continually stated that he does not believe in the shedding of blood. His hands will not be littered with blood of the foolish opposition leaders as would have been the case in Mongu.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Buleti Nsemukila has disclosed that President Lungu is deeply concerned about the slow progress on various developmental projects in Luapula Province.

Dr. Nsemukila disclosed this on Friday last week during a Provincial Development Coordinating Committee meeting in Mansa.

He said President Lungu wants completion timelines for the three Chiefs’ Palaces in the Province becauase they have taken too long.

Dr. Nsemukila also disclosed that President Lungu wants to see progress on mineral exploration in the Province because the region shares boundaries with the Copperbelt and Katanga Provinces which have rich mineral deposits.

He said the Turro Oil exploration project is also close to the President’s heart and wants to know the progress on the exploration efforts so that timelines are known on the actions to be taken.

The Permanent Secretary further informed the PDCC members that President Lungu is equally concerned about the slow progress recorded on the FTJ University construction project in Mansa and wants to see working progress.

Dr. Nsemukila described the performance of the E-Voutcher system in the last farming season as a disaster though in his view it the best way to go if the operation is sorted out.

He said the President is concerned about the performance of the E-Voutcher system as the piloting for Samfya and Mansa was a disaster despite receiving 90 per cent of the Cards but only a few were activated.

The Permanent Secretary said President Lungu is also concerned about the Luena farm block development and wants progress timelines on the matter as he has demanded for a comprehensive report of what is happening on the ground.

MINISTER of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe says the hosting of the 2017 Ease of Doing Business Initiative (EDBI) conference will benefit Zambia through knowledge sharing and foreign exchange in-flows from international delegates.

The conference, which will be hosted this May, is expected to attract 400 delegates from 30 countries in Africa and abroad, among them top business executives and other leading public and private sector players.

“This annual conference is a peer learning event supported by the World Bank to facilitate knowledge sharing on business reforms and showcase best business practice,” Ms Mwanakatwe said.

The EDBI conference is a peer-to-peer learning event requested by African countries and supported by the World Bank Group, to facilitate knowledge sharing on Doing Business reforms.

It aims to showcase and facilitate replication of best practice, best fit-in reform, ideas, opinions and expertise on the legal and institutional framework underpinning successful business environment reforms in order to help pave the way for bigger and better business and increased investment flows in sub-Saharan Africa.

In a speech read by permanent secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Kayula Siame during the launch of the website on 2017 Ease of Doing Business Initiative Conference, Ms Mwanakatwe said this year’s theme was ‘Opportunities: Business reforms for industrialisation, value addition and job creation’.

Ms Mwanakatwe said the theme is premised on the need for African countries to share experiences and expertise in the implementation of business and economic reforms that will spur and accelerate sustainable inclusive industrialisation, value addition and job creation of the economies.

She said among the key topics to be discussed at the conference are enhancing regional trade, changes to doing business methodologies and implementation of special economic zones.

MINISTER of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe says Zambia has recorded an investment pledge of over US$3 billion in the last one year and that this will result in creation of about 17,000 jobs.

And Minister of Foreign Affairs Harry Kalaba says Zambia is poised to register growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Mrs Mwanakatwe said about US$500 million has so far been actualised from the US$3 billion pledged investment.

She said China and South Africa are among the top countries making various investments in Zambia.

The two ministers were speaking at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday on their way to Egypt, where President Lungu had been scheduled to travel for a State visit today. The President’s trip has been cancelled.

This is contained in a statement issued yesterday by first secretary for press and tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Naomi Nyawali.

Mrs Mwanakatwe said Zambia is performing well in attracting investments as there is growing interest to invest in Zambia.

She said the economic outlook is positive as inflation is under control at 6.7 percent while the exchange rate is also stable.

Mrs Mwanakatwe said bank interest rates have reduced following the reduction of the monetary policy rate by the Bank of Zambia.

She said Government is vigorously pursuing the diversification programme by incorporating the private sector.

“Zambia is paying attention to the value addition agenda as one way of achieving diversification,” Mrs Mwanakatwe said.

And Mr Kalaba says Zambia is poised to register growth in GDP once the Foreign Service Bill is passed in Parliament.

Mr Kalaba said the Bill will facilitate growth of the country’s economy through effective implementation of the foreign economic policy.

He said Zambia is making modalities to increase its trade volumes with countries it has bilateral agreements with.

Mr Kalaba has since instructed members of staff in all foreign missions to adhere to the provisions of Zambia’s foreign policy to ensure that the country gets maximum benefits from nations where it has missions.

“Zambia is on the international scene for its own interest and as such, Zambian missions in various parts of the world are expected to perform to satisfaction.

“Officers in foreign missions who will not perform to the expectations of Government will be recalled as they are required to work extra hard and ensure that they keep the Zambian flag high,” Mr Kalaba said.

President Lungu’s motorcade appears to give way to HH’s convoy in Mongu on Saturday

Human Rights activits and Patriotic Front member of the media committee Nakiwe Simpungwe has commented that Mongu-Limulunga traffic debacle leaves President Edgar Lungu as winner
Simpungwe said the hallmark of President Edgar Lungu is his humility and tolerance extending it to those that disrespect him.

She said the matter demonstrated that he could rise above the fray and refuse to fall prey to the desperate cheap plot of some of the elements in the Opposition.

She said this confirms that Zambians made an ideal choice about who should be their leader.

“President Edgar Lungu in all this has won the Leadership Award. In all this he has demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that he was the best choice the Zambians made” .

“His magnanimity, his ability to tolerate, his humility is something that all of us his followers can take with us and use as perfect weapon against the opposition”.

“How many Presidents could tolerate that insolence by Hakainde Hichilema”.

“That HH is still a free man walking today after all that display of misconduct is proof enough that our President is a great man” .

She said Zambians should be proud of President Edgar Lungu as he harbours no resentment and bitterness.

“Zambia is in safe hands with President Lungu. He is a free spirit who has no bitterness nor resentment and he passes the leadership test with flying colours”.

“And after all is said and done, let the security and legal wings move on so that justice is done” .

She however called on the Police to arrest law breakers and those keen to promote lawlessness.

“The Head of State was harrased in broad day light and in full view of everyone. We cry about justice for all citizens . President Lungu is a citizen apart from being the Head of this nation. Therefore let justice be done for him too”

Minister of Energy David Mabumba says Northern Province is poised for more power generation investment following significant advancement made in the electricity generation projects financed by Government.

Mr. Mabumba disclosed this when he addressed civil servants in Kasama.

He says Government has made tangible progress in the upgrading of Chishimba hydro-power station from its current 6 megawatts to 15 megawatts.

Mr. Mabumba said his ministry has since engaged a foreign contractor to upgrade the Chishimba power project.

The Minister also revealed that Government has also found a developer to carry out works on Kalungwishi power generation project which will generate about 247 megawatts in Mporokoso district.

Mr. Mabumba said once the two projects are done the province will have three hydro-power stations in total including the newly opened Lunzuwa hydro-power station in Mpulungu district.

He observed that Northern Province will also be self-sufficient in terms of power supply once all the projects under construction are concluded.

And Northern Province Permanent Secretary Jobbicks Kalumba has commended the Ministry of Energy for efforts made in accelerating power generation projects in the region.

Dr. Kalumba noted that ZESCO has already started connecting Kalambo water falls area in Mbala to the national grid.

He said this will help boost tourism and other social economic activities in different parts of the province once the projects are complete.

POLICE have opened an inquiry into United Party for National Development (UPND) leaders Hakainde Hichilema and his vice-president Geoffrey Mwamba for allegedly obstructing a presidential motorcade in Mongu on Saturday.

Western Province commissioner of police Charles Lungu said in an interview yesterday that an inquiry file has been submitted to the police headquarters in Lusaka.

“An inquiry has been opened against the UPND leadership following an obstruction to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade on its way to Limulunga, where he was scheduled to receive the Litunga during the Kuomboka traditional ceremony,” he said.

On Saturday, Mr Hichilema and Mr Mwamba’s motorcade failed to give way to the presidential convoy, which was enroute to Limulunga.

This has infuriated a cross-section of Zambians, many of whom have called for the arrest and prosecution of the culprits for the disrespect of authority.

Meanwhile, Western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has said the obstruction of the presidential motorcade was uncalled for and should never have occurred.

Meanwhile, the police in Mongu have said a man who was apprehended for trespassing at Mongu Airport when a plane carrying President Lungu was about to take off, is mentally disturbed.

Mr Lungu said it has been established that the man is mentally unstable after members of his family presented documents from the hospital.

Mr Lungu has, however, said the man will remain in custody pending few more clarifications.
